Announcement of the death of Fanny Maillet-Valser
born on 5-18-39, + February 1919
After-grandmother of Claude
Fanny VALSER was born in Shawls in 1839, daughter ofAlexander VALSER, violinist in Paris and dAdelaide Victoire RIVIERE. bedding merchant in Châlons
Her daughter-in-law, Marguerite MAILLET, wrote her memories:
«My mother-in-law, born Fanny VALSER in 1839, was very pretty and intelligent, she married at 17 years old, with Augustin MAILLET,
Sense.
She had six children, including a young girl who died in childbirth, two daughters who were married and died in childbirth, and three boys.
She helped her husband a lot in his profession of printwriter, very kind to the clientele, but an iron authority that made her dread. Reims,
President of charity, she was made an Officer of Public Instruction.
The war was very painful and she died at the Augustinian convent in St.Germain-en-Laye, where she had retired in 1919.
They had made great trips, quite rare at the time, 2 months in Italy and as much in Spain, André, the youngest of the sons, who occupied architecture, trained them, and they all had a lot of fun.
Finally, our presence in Reims and especially our children gave them joy, and for me it was a great help when I arrived in Reims. My unhappy husband's illness has saddened the end of their lives, but she had a very great ressource to react.
The wedding of Andrew was also a happy time and she knew Robert (Andre's first child, born in 1914).
She was remained alone in Reims,( See his letter of 31 August 1914) at the beginning of the war (3 months, she saw the structure of the cathedral burned), But the bombings repeated very often, she left her dear home that she was not to see again. Sarry where Jeanne was alone, Henri being mobilized, and then Epernay where we were refugees, and then she decided to live in a nursing home (Augustines in St Germain en Laye) Where she died. (Stripped by armistice and the end of the war, she had a nervous breakdown that took her away in February 1919) »
The funeral took place in a small chapel in the devastated cathedral, while her husband's obsessions were solemn in 1913. His grave is in Reims.
Grannie also remembers her grandmother: "Fanny Valser had organized a small house, where abandoned mother-girls could be welcomed. She took me there on one of her visits."
We kept a few letters from Fanny Maillet-Valser:
25 October 1884addressed to his son Georges, who was preparing Polytechnique in a Parisian high school, boarding school.
And letters of the war of 14:
31 August 1914addressed to Georges and Marguerite Maillet, who had gone to take refuge with their children in Dornecy (Nevere).
on 23 September 1914, and 2 October 1914She was sent to her little daughter Suzanne Rougier who had been staying at the Thirion's house in Cherbourg since the holidays. She told about the life in Reims during the bombings of the Prussians.
18 July 1916 from St-Germain en Laye to Georges and Marguerite Maillet who were in St-Cyr-sur-Loire, Touraine. Fanny was in a retirement home.
And finally, last letter from St-Germain en Laye, August 6, 1918.
