Memories of Marguerite Maillet:
"The Valser family came from Metz where she lived before 1870. (Alexandre Valser) was a musician, even an artist, playing violin at Louis-Philippe's court and his brother (Félix Valser +1884, who also played in court, had no children) Even more capable, it seemed a violin of great value.
The first, Alexandre Valser, married Adélaïde Rivière, from Matougues near Châlons. They lived in Châlons where they had a bedding shop, but he returned to Paris every winter as a violinist and his wife was alone in the business.
They had two children Fanny and Alfred Valser who was studying well and distinguished himself in chemistry. and would have had a future in this direction, but he returned as a pharmacist to Châlons."
Alexander VALSER, born in 1807 to Metz, was a musician and a good artist, who played violin at the Court of Louis-Philippe. His violin, from 1800's, was kept of good quality and 2 bows, one of which, from 1850, broken today, was of great value. Georges Maillet, his grandson (and also Claude Rougier-Cordelle's grandfather), also played with this violin.
As Alexander played in Paris only during the 5 months of the winter season, he also had a bedding business at the Shawls, whose wife was occupied at 50 rue de Marne (still visible on 1 April 1882).
This one, Adelaide Victory RIVIERE, was born in Matougues (Marne), daughter of Marie-Louise DEMOUCCY and da brother of Pierre-Charles RIVIERE (1771+15-3-1851).
This uncle had a story: he was captain of the Imperial Guard under Emperor Napoleon 1st; decorated with the Legion of Honor by the Emperor at Jena, he made the campaign of Russia, the passage of Berezina, he returned from it, one of the 20,000 who returned the Niemen out of the 300,000 parties in 1812.
He later became Commander of the National Guard of Chalons where he died (1851).
His comrade in the Russian campaign, the lieutenant of PRILLY, became bishop of Châlons and came to greet the remains of his old friend at his death in 1851 in Chalons.
The notebook of notes taken during the Russian campaign disappeared, but it seems that it was hardly interesting, noting only a few local circumstances, for example whether he had eaten or not.
He had taken her niece to Paris in 1829 (date of the miniature d'Adelaïde preserved in Vierville), where she was a modist before getting married late, in 1830, Alexander VALSER.
Alexander and Adelaide had two children:
1 - Alfred VALSER, born in Chalons, died in Reims, *18-2-1837+19-1-1891, who studied chemistry and became preparer of the famous BERTHELOT, and teacher-supplementer at the School of Medicine of Reims.
He would have had a future in this career, but he returned to Châlons as a pharmacist, where he married Clotilde BRISSET (1842+21-12-1868), born in Sarry, and whose parents lived in the castle of Sarry, bought later by Henri MAILLET.
With BERTHELOT, Alfred VALSER had discovered cocaine. Because of his ignorance of the drug, he was gradually intoxicated and it led to suicide. His pharmacy was visible on Marne Street.
In 1891, in a section on remise life, we read:
"Alfred Valser, professor of chemistry at the Faculty of Medicine, violinist at the Philarmonics, etc., . Veeuf in 1868, he came to Reims and entered the Hôtel-Dieu in 1879"
Alfred and Clotilde Valser had 3 very close children. Clotilde died at 25 years of tuberculosis. Alfred lived alone and raised 2 girls and a boy, Lucie, René and Alice:
- Lucia Mary VALSER, (*7-5-1864, + in Luchon on 4-3-1941), married to Charles CLIGNET. They had a daughter, Madeleine Clignet, wife René MONIMART- Yes, sir.
The Monimarts had two sons, including a doctor (Max Monimart 1912- 1953) and another in automobile business, or a doctor as well??
Madeleine Clignet, who became a widow, remarried with Raymond LAFONT.
- René VALSER, (1865, +20-3-1885) died at 20 years of age
- Alice VALSER, (1867-1927), pretty and intelligent, married to Henri HARANT, then to (John) Alexandre PICHON
(1857-1927) after his widowhood. His son Maurice HARANT had a chemical trade in Reims. A girl, Yolande
Harant s married to Claude BOUVY in 1950.
2 - Fanny VALSER, 1839-1919 , is Claude's great-grandmother.
We kept from this family VALSER a naïve table (1845), (from Tandree to Claude, currently in Vierville) representing in a living room, from left to right:
- The little Alfred VALSER, born in 1837 in Châlons
- His sister. Fanny, born in 1839, the grandmother of Claude
- Adelaide RIVIERE-VALSERniece of the master
- Alexander VALSERher husband, the violinist
The chimney clock is now in Dampierre.
Here are the comments
of Grannie on this table: "Portrait of the Valser family - La girl, my grandmother Fanny Alexandrine Valser is about 5 years old, she was born in 1840, the painting must have been executed in 1845.
She married Constantine Auguste Maillet (+1911), a typographer, at 16 years old; they lived in Reims, she had 6 children, the third of whom was my father Georges Maillet.
Its mother Adélaïde Victoire Rivière was born in 1799 (+1871) in Matougues, where his parents were to be farmers.
Sound Uncle Captain River made Napoleon's wars, decorated by him in Wagram, he made the campaign of Russia, his retirement diary was in the hands of Alfred's branch (he disappeared, not being interesting, noting whether he had eaten..!).
Adelaide was in Paris in 1829, when she was supposed to have been a modist. Alexander Valser coming, and his brother Alfred (sic, Felix instead), from Metz, they were both violinists at the court of Louis-Philippe. This family lived behind the cathedral.
The boy Alfred He was a chemist and had worked with Berthelot, they found the cocaine. Then in Chalons/Marne, his wife from Sarry left him widowed with three children, the son died at 20 years, and his daughters Clignet then Monimart, and Harant then Bouvy, were born; ignoring the mischief of the cocaine he had used, retired to Reims near his sister, he committed suicide.
Of the 6 children of my grandmother, the 3 boys were born: Georges, Henri (Sarry), André (Lille)
1 April 1986"
