Augustin MAILLET,
born 18-9-1828 in Resous,+ 18-1-1913 in Reims,
at age 85
married to Fanny Valser in 1856
Back to Grandpa of Claude
Augustin MAILLET
was born in Sense
18 September 1828, son of a farmer, former gendarme, Simon MAILLET (ofIndre)
and Sophie CHATILLON- I'm from Sezous.
He was the eldest of two children.
Her daughter-in-law Marguerite MAILLET (Claudia's grandmother) tells us:
"After attending schoolHaussimont
of which the priest was his godfather, he left
(1844) 16 years (he had early taste for drawing) to come as an apprentice to theBarbat printing in Chalons-sur-Marne (today
Shawls in the field). He worked very well there and became a good engraver. He collaborated in the production of the lithographs of the history of Châlons, published in 1855. See his lithographs.
While acquiring professional value, he developed his education and attended municipal drawing courses. When he married in 1856
(on 23 June) With Fanny VALSER, he was to join forces with the son Barbat to take over the printing business. This project had failed and he left in Paris around 1860, where he perfected himself 2 years in engraving and decoration.
He returned to Reims in 1862,
(after difficult beginnings in Paris), he founded the lithography
MAILLET-VALSER, 17, rue de Talleyrand. She was specialized in labels of Champagne wines. Business quickly took a large extension and he could withdraw in 1877 in the house he had built 23, rue Boulard.
Maillet-Valser lithography disappeared, the building having made way for a street. The successor was the Debar printing house.
While he was painting, he became a municipal councillor and then a deputy mayor. (the mayor was named Mr. Henrot)
(in 1884 and then for 12 years), in charge of the road, general adviser to the 1st canton, administrator of the Hospices, president of the Société des Amis des Arts de Reims, member of the Académie de Reims, the Société des Artistes Français, etc. He was successively made an officer of the academy and then public education and received the Cross of the Legion of Honor from President CARNOT to the City Hall of Reims in 1892.
Until his death, which occurred suddenly on 18 January 1913, he was a painter, having kept as public office only the place of administrator of the high school and that of president of the school of industrial arts of which he was the founder (she gave good workers in all branches, she became the Regional School of Fine Arts).
He had six children:
-
Louise, wife of Léonce BOTZdied in childbirth in 1880, at the birth of their daughter Marie BOTZ
- Marie, died in Compertrix (near Chalons) 18 months
-
Georges, Father of Granie or Suzanne Maillet-Rougier)
-
Henry, married to Jeanne Salleron, who have a significant progeny in Champagne
-
Jeanne, wife CAMUSETdied in 1893,
-
Andre, married to Clotilde
After a hard work at the beginning of his life, he enjoyed his fortune and his beautiful house. They travelled every year, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and died in a few hours on 18 January 1913 at the age of 85. (see share of deaths below)
The newspapers of the era have reported at length his obséques, see photos below.Suzanne ROUGIER, his granddaughter, also remembers that the MAILLET-VALSER couple, when he left in Paris in 1860, hoped for a better situation than that of engraver-associate at Barbat. He did not get it. They spent there the 20,000 gold dowry of Fanny (400.000f. d journée), and Suzanne found on a letter from Augustin MAILLET: "We were waiting for a third child and you see my parents' head here".
The success was complete after their arrival in Reims and the foundation of a publishing house in their name.
Reims And fortune at the MAILLET-VALSER.
Suzanne ROUGIER also remembers that during the 1870 war they left in Belgium.
In Reims, they lived first on Talleyrand Street, (rue became a cinema), and then built in 1875 the House 23, rue Boulard, sold around 1920, and currently owned by the University. A ceiling painted in the office (1st room on the right when entering through the vestibule) has remained for a long time. This house still bears the MV monogram above the cochère door, and a stone bearing the mention "This stone was laid by Georges and Henri Maillet on 10 July 1875". The house was completed in 1877.
The great hobby of Augustine was painting, he left us many paintings, in the taste of the era.See page 4312 and also the portrait of Georges MAILLET, a child, grandfather of Claude, in the room of Tandree in Dampierre). At the Musée Saint-Denis in Reims, there are some paintings Maillet-Valser, notably "Pont en Royans, Dauphiné" 1904, "Maison de Garde en forêt de Trois-Fontaines" 1903.
His bronze bust was made by Chavailllaud and a copy is in Dampierre, (another one in Reims, at the School of Fine Arts then, during its renovation, transported in principle to the town hall, but where?).

23 rue Boulard, residence of the Maillet-Valser, now owned by the University of Reims,
taken in 2000, with Gaëlle and Tandree. The door is surmounted by the monogram "MV" drawn by Augustin Maillet. A stone bears the mention: "This stone was laid by Georges and Henri Maillet on July 1875"
