letter from Henri Reig, sent from Argentina to his brother-in-law Louis Rougier, engineer

Jacques REIG, born in 1812
and Marie VILAR, born around 1826, died around 1913 at 87 years

  Pauline REIG's parents, Claude's grandmother

37

Jacques REIG was born in 1812 at the Banyuls, eldest son of Michel REIG, owner and landowner, and Marie BONNET.

He was first raised at the farmhouse, then he settled in the large house built by his father, Place Castellane in the Port-Sales, house he inherited.

Around 1840, he married Marie VILAR, (1826-1913) François VILAR, notary to PerpignanThey had 12 children.

The tomb of the REIG is in Port Vendres: chapel surrounded by grates in the old cemetery. It is still used by the REIGs dArles-sur-Tech.

Comment Paulette FAZEMBAT, kept by his mother Lucie ROUGIERon the REIG family:

"Pauline REIG-ROUGIER's father had a big fortune in money and vineyards. At the time of the phylloxera, all his vineyards were lost. He played on the stock exchange to make a fortune and lost everything.
All his daughters were raised in the Sacred Heart and his sons in Sorrèze among the Dominicans. The 12 children of the couple were raised in Port Vendres and Pauline REIG (Mother Louis ROUGIER) remembers her youth: she told Claude about the bad blows that the brothers and sisters invented. They had thus mounted on the roofs ringing the bell Saint-Michel, but what a beating while descending!"

The 12 children of Jacques Reig and Marie Vilar:

Pauline says that her brothers and sisters had more or less chances in life:
Memories of Claude"And what became of all my grandmother's brothers and sisters, first of all charming names: Michel, Marie, Caroline, Jeanne, Claire, Jacques, Emma, Pauline, Henriette, Henri, Joseph, Lucie...."

1 - Michel REIG  remained without seed
Claude: "Michel, the elder, (he was given the name of the grandfather who had the house of Port-Vendres built in Castellane Square) died without descendants"

2 - Claude: "Marie REIG  died at 18 or 12 years of age?"

3 - Claude: Caroline REIG  married his cousin (uncle) Edward VILAR who became a senator and is the only branch that has left descendants and remained in the land, of which Claude knew the descendants Montesquieu.

4 - Jeanne REIG  died at 10 years

5 - Claire REIG  died at 10 years

6 - Jacques REIG  married three times and had three children.

Claude: "James - it is a name that bears bad luck; it seems that all the James were going wrong. He wanted to prepare Polytechnique because he had done good education. But his father did not agree. Shouldn't stay on the properties. Then he had typhoid fever... and since that was not amazing. He married three times - it was James' grandmother who raised the children of the 2nd marriage. The third time with a woman who had a child, and he beat her. He made scenes to his mother to draw money from him. He died at 65 years old. I knew Marguerite Breuil who lived in Grenoble and was married to a pharmacist (she had a terrible Catalan accent).

Interview with Paulette FAZEMBAT, by her mother Lucie ROUGIER:
"James REIG, another brother of Pauline REIG, has presented himself several times to Polytechnique without success. He married twice and, naturally unstable, practically abandoned his sons and daughters.
When he was spoiled, when he went to see his mother, who lived at his daughter Pauline's house, she was locked up in the "offices" and told her that she had gone to Laroque, so that he could not still support her with money.

           7 - Claude: "Emma REIG  dead at 40 - What a woe!

8 - Claude: Pauline REIG, born in 1859, died in 1956 (do the count, 97 years, I told you his story), married the future General Louis ROUGIERShe's Claude's grandmother.

Comment by Paulette FAZEMBAT, held by her mother Lucie ROUGIER:
"The future sons-in-law had to choose by marrying his daughters between an annuity and a dowry; Captain ROUGIER chose the rent and with the ruin of his father-in-law found himself without money. He then left for Africa where he did wonderful, as we know.".

9 -Claude: "Henriette REIG, So deaf, who left so many sad memories to Gerde, Henriette had almost married Joffre - . It was her brother-in-law Louis who introduced her, but Joffre's father was a cooper, she refused. (Commissioner of the Navy?)Her young husband died of tuberculosis and her son Charles was killed in Salonique during the war. She had her daughter Luce left. There were such lovely pictures of her and charming little letters that she wrote to her cousin Maurice. She went crazy. Henriette retired with Luce near Bagneres-de-Bigorre in an old house on top of a hill in Gerde. She had taken guards that she lived in commons. And Luce died at 36 years old. Yes, Henriette had not been lucky. I often thought about her, because we spent several summers in Gerde around my grandmother when this house was in division by the 11 surviving brothers and sisters."

10 - Claude: Henri REIG, "He was very spoiled by his parents, and he was driving a big train with horse racing... and run away In Buenos Aires.
"He died tragically at the age of 25, killed by a rival of his mistress?"
Interview with Paulette FAZEMBAT, by her mother Lucie ROUGIER:"Henri REIG, Pauline's brother (wonder Louis ROUGIER), had slapped his captain when he was doing his military service. He fled to Spain and then to South America. He had a gift of drawing and therefore lived with drawings in his new life. He was a very pretty boy, a runner, impulsive. He fought in duel and was killed."

We kept a letter from Argentinaaddressed on 10 February 1886 to his brother-in-law Louis ROUGIER. (above)

         11 - Joseph REIG , died at 4 years

12 - Lucie REIG, married twice, to Mr. PETETIN, then to Mr. ROULET.
Claude Lucie was an original, so deaf that we turned around because she spoke very loudly with a very funny voice. How did she get married? She had taken over Polytechnician Petetin artillery captain, son of a Prefect of Empire. Her father opposed the marriage, her mother brought him to Perpignan making big expenses and sending notes to the father until he gave his consent. But he died 14 months later, and remarried with Roulet, a Protestant family who had been emigrated to Switzerland. He was an agronomist and lived in beautiful properties. When he died, he made his maid and nephews Roulet his heirs.".
Claude remembers that she had a very passionate face and that she was saying to her nephew Maurice ROUGIER, (Claude's father), with the accent, "We never bother ourselves, you are bothered by others."

Interview with Paulette FAZEMBAT, a member of her mother Lucie ROUGIER:

"Anecdote on the REIG who married his cook's daughter: they both went to Spain to marry religiously. Port-Sales And they had a daughter, called Lucie who was drinking. There is still a REIG in Port Vendres, as it is said, which is a factor."
