Emile CHARPENTIER,
born in 1835, died on 17-6-1917,
at age 82

    Back to Grandpa of Claude

Memories of Marguerite Charpentier-Maillet, her daughter:

"My father was born in Chaumont-sur-Aire (Meuse) in 1835. After completing his studies at the Bar-le-Duc High School, he spent years as a notary clerk and settled in Epense at 30 years of age. (notary in 1865). He was getting tired, being very badly assisted (he was doing his clerk's job again at night) and left still young, having good "Successful."
"My father, Emile Charpentier was notary at Epense and married Sidonia Person of Dampierre. They had two children they lost, one at 15 days, the other at 6 months, then my sister and I. He left his study in 1876 and came to Dampierre where my grandparents (Person) still living on the farm (speaks of the castle). We built the house (present house in Dampierre) And the fence belonged to my grandfather who had rented his farm since 1866. My parents have gradually organized the garden and the property as it is now, bought the meadow of the Mill (on the other side of the river known as the Little Rouyat).
My father, who was retired at 41 years of age after 11 years of notarial work, was very busy with various plantations.
He also took a lot of time (for several years) to work on a meadow in Balcycourt near Verdun, which he improved a lot.
Mayor of Dampierre for a dozen years, he had the post set up in the village.
(He was) administrator of Chatel-Guyon (City of thermal waters)What he's been passionate about.

He had remained very active despite his 79 years of war. The exodus we've made together He was very tired and had a first attack of paralysis in Dornecy where we were refugees. He was able to return a few months later, accompanied by a man from the country, and he died on 17 June 1917 in Dampierre
. The war that prevented us from moving did not allow us to go to his funeral."
Claude says:

"He also made sales (he bought the dresser of Tandrée, 17 rue de Sèvres, which Annie de la Villeguerin inherited, ... and also the Chinese gold service at Grannie) and he was very tired. They hesitated to withdraw from Chalons or Dampierre... Sidonia, to be able to take care of his parents who had the farm of the castle and, aging, had rented it, with Emile, bought the small house next to theold farm MICHEL And they had the house built that they lived in 1879 (when it was 27°C!). It was so cold that all slept in the office.
Emile did not get along with the architect built the house with workers contractors. He loved the solid. The house is made with tiles (taken on the hill and dried in the sun) , the wood was standing... Jeanne MICHEL.
In the photos, the face is tormented. Mayor of Dampierre He had the Post Office installed in Dampierre.
He did a lot of agricultural work in addition to the village routine. He took the meadows behind the garden, put drains to make it a good meadow (very rare in Champagne). There were discussions about the rivers - Father Auguste, Grandpa of Madame BOIVIN and owner of the mill - From trial to trial, he was at the Court of Appeal of Paris and won his trial.
As he went down the stairs of the court, he slipped and was hospitalized. This forced rest definitely healed him from rheumatism attacks that made him impotent and made him go to the town hall in a small car of infirmity (she is in the attic in Dampierre)"

Claude:
" During the 1914 war, thanks to his two horse cars, he was able to bring Heat Where her daughter was Marguerite, Georges, The five children and a servant who had fled Reims, then returned on foot to Dampierre from where he left with his wife Sidonia with the second car to Chalons. All found themselves there and went "emigration" to Dornecy ( Nièvre). The grandfather died in 1917 exhausted by the worries"
