born in 1810, in 1886, at 75 years
and Joséphine BERTRAND,
born in 1812, + in 1900, at 87 years old
great-great-grandparents of Claude
Claude says:
"The CHARPENTIER family is from Chaumont-sur-Aire.
They were farmers and merchants of goods.
The aiul, at the Revolution, did not want to buy the goods of the emigrants: "they will come back and take everything from us"... He left with a flock of sheep during the Revolution; he would have sold the sheep 5 francs and returned with bags so loaded with gold or silver that he had difficulty carrying them (he had not wanted to accept any assignations).
The family was easy."
Claude's grandmother, Marguerite Maillet or "Bonne-Maman de Sceaux" remembers her grandparents:
"My grandfather, Joseph CHARPENTIER, born in Chaumont-sur-Aire (Meuse) in 1811, of a very modest family, he alone had succeeded, being intelligent and very hardworking.
He had made a wine trade that had succeeded, then he bought and sold goods and since the peasants were eager to buy fields, he earned money, but he was suffering from it and his life was somewhat shortened (a disease of heart quite serious) because he did not know how to rest, he died in 1886 at 75 years old, in Chaumont where he always lived, and where we often went during our childhood.
His wife, Josephine BERTRAND, born in 1812, also in Chaumont lived older, she died in 1900 at 87 years. She was treated until the end by an old maid, Marianne, who remained in their service for almost 50 years - type of honest old servants of the past and who considered the family and the house as hers.
They had two sons:
Emile CHARPENTIER
1835-1917, my father, (Growth of Claude) more delicate health has studied law at Bar le Duc.
and my uncle Jules CHARPENTIER 1837-1903, "Uncle Jules "
who has taken over the culture,
Married to Lisle-en-Barrois at Nelly Collet; they lived in Chaumont and had 3 daughters:
- Mary, dead at 11 years of measles
- Therese, the eldest, married Louis AUBRY, who had no children,
- and Louise, married to LEBLANC, Laheycourt, where she had two sons: René and Albert Leblanc. (remembered from Granie: One of the sons is mayor in Chaumont, lives in front of the paternal house, and has had only one daughter a little crippled. The other son is a farmer in Laheycourt and had several children).
My uncle died in 1903 and my aunt about ten years later
We didn't go back to Chaumont, neither my sister nor I, being both married, one of them was ReimsThe other one in Paris, but we had good memories, being received like grandchildren, we were celebrated and especially my mother when we went.
My grandparents had made their golden wedding in 1884 and gave that day to each of their sons 100,000 gold francs which was a sum at the time (*2 million francs 1998).
We were going to Dampierre
In Chaumont by car, 5 hours at the horse's little trot and the ride seemed to us long more than once!"
