My dears,
A little word to tell you that life resumed here, after a good trip and some difficulties with Lydia who had not arrived before I asked Simone (not very well) to do the cleanings at home, and that I expected to find at home the night of my arrival. I saw it only the following Tuesday, without having any news of her. Finally Régine was able to stay with me until his arrival, and after some explanations everything came into order. It is necessary to get in the head that she is a fantastic woman, but brave girl nevertheless.
I'm gradually getting back in touch with my friends over the phone, because I'd rather stay a little calm, but everything's fine. Florent starts the harvest next Monday, Flor. was happy to see the vine flourish with a beautiful sun but this night big storm and big rain, and the poor must disappoint!
The mail starts a little bit yesterday 4 The money is worth a lot of money. It's not cheap, the Longueville field alone 2345,00, Balfourier Avenue 2640... the other two modest ones. I've been waiting until 15-10 to settle. I've also paid Loiselet, the call for funds seems to have dropped, I'm adding my big paper to this appeal for funds that will tell you about Loiselet's worries so that everyone can pay what they need, they can do a procedure to sell a recalcitrant customer's apartment! I think you can throw away that paper I'm sending you so you know.
I am glad to know you in Vierville in your pretty beach house, I hope you have good weather here, it was a beautiful weather except for a few hours of heat in the middle of the day, the storm of this night has very badly demolished everything!
I hope this letter arrives in time in Normandy, I kiss you hard, your grandmother

My little Claude
I'm very late to thank you for your letter and photocopies sent on this famous ECA submarine, which have made me happy. But I have just had days well occupied, with joy, by the little family Michel, useful and pleasant stay, but very tiring for my 88 years, alas, I had little ones... ( ??)...often in meals, and in the day they are wise and very cute, but are young..I also had Michel, lunch or dinner, and the 1ir
m ..( ??) The question of water leaking into the attic, not to mention these 3 famous water meters, which 2 were returned to the Waters' Cie. Facchini will make the ditches to put new pipes, in December Michel will return, the old ones suffered too much from these 2 winters of frosts. And then Michel has re-ordered the domestic question, it is organized now, and no one has sunk before his authority. Lydia has given up starting her WE on Friday afternoon to return on Monday morning. Régine is easier to convince, and always ready to never leave me alone. But what a matter to agree on a Spanish, Florent, an Italian, Facchini, an Italian, Lydia, everyone eats their noses, ensuring that the neighbour does nothing! Finally everything is calmed down, the smiles have returned, and I hope I will regain my strength and energy. I apologize for this badly written letter and surely full of mistakes, it will be better next week.
I also had to have dinner with the Fredls and we had a good chat. They are in good shape, well-fitted after 4 days of November. ( ??) Last week, and s'y are found in the family, Yanns, Christophes, and finally a real family party. Laurent was at Hyères the same goal, and all this youth was ( ??)
I'm glad to see you, darlings, in principle on Friday 21st, anyway, it will always be a joy.
The good weather is over, a big storm has come, but it would have been necessary to water, so everything is going for the best. The health condition around our friends is not brilliant, flus, cancers, Lion Colette who spends her time falling because she does not want to wear low heels, and since she has a heart disease, it does not fix her business. Saying that we are already wishing spring! There I stop, my dears, because I become ( ??)
Good fucks all around you

Letter from Grandma (at the Brûlat) to Claude (at Versailles)
4 February 1987
My dear Claude
I'm just responding to your long letter about our Martin's marriage and all the preparations you're doing, it makes me happy and you're nice to talk to me about all this, especially since I know you don't like to write a lot. Thank you, darling, I'm thinking of this beautiful day that's getting ready without much hope of participating, which I'm sorry, but I have to realize the reality, and I'm not good at anything anymore. But I had such a beautiful life surrounded by my John, and all of you, my dears, and seeing this beautiful youth is a beautiful end of life for me.
If Frédérique and Martin can one day come to me before their wedding, it will be a real joy – and I'm already thinking of this June 13th that is very close – I'm glad that Martin found it necessary to move in to settle down to their liking, happy that a friendly priest can come to them, you have already kept all the details, and if Yves can come a little to me, he will tell me all that I will live with you all from the bottom of my heart.
T. Maine has been with me for a few days, but she is not spoiled by time, and we see long days of Norman crap, not very cold, but rather unpleasant. Today she is at her sister Guitte, whose birthday it is. I am glad to see her and I hope that her nephew Marc will not stay at her mother's on leave, because then Maine will take her bed!
I repeat my letter interrupted by a call from Brigitte, who tells me the good news planned for the end of September, what joy my dear ones, I find it hard to believe in so much happiness! Let's hope that everything will be fine, and that I will have the happiness of seeing this baby come so much desired. I do not realize... and I kiss you, all my dear family, that the Lord is watching over this little one. I hope that the Frédérics will be able to come to me one day. My little Claude, if you knew how happy I am, I think I will shorten my letter, because my machine is tired and in essence I no longer know what I am writing. I just got a call from Yves that made me happy, and I kiss you both tenderly, T. Maine just came home and joined me.
Your Grandma

My dears
A little word that was badly written, but to tell you that we had Fred and Brigitte at dinner last night, and that they were shining with happiness! It was a real joy to see them really transformed. Brigitte had brought us the photos of the ultrasounds made in the afternoon, your little baby has already 2cm 1⁄2 long, a heart that beats beautifully, finally it is a beautiful promise sent by the Lord and I was very moved.
The chatter and the projects went well, and then they took away their pretty dresser, Tandree's memory, and in exchange Fred left his big Guernsey sweater... which is no big deal.
The weather is back to the good day. The sky is blue, the wind is missing, and I just went outside with T. Maine as a guide. ( ??) Every day, with the hope of improving my case.
Two happy events in a few months, it's worth an effort, even if it's not very effective. I think you're going to make a jump to Vierville this weekend, my dears, I wish you good weather and kiss you tenderly, T. Maine joins me, I'm very happy to have her with me.

Letter from Michel (at the Brûlat) to Yves (in Versailles)
Sunday, 26 April 1987
My dear Yves,
I come to you to take stock of the situation as I see it now. I think it's no longer possible for me to be away from Toulon, neither often nor long without you providing a certain presence both emotionally and materially. The organization in place is still quite complicated: Lydia, Régine, Simone, Florent, Facchini, nurse in the morning, nurse in the evening etc., and there are always minor problems that did not arise when Mom was aware or she was settling them herself. They must now be resolved as they are absent, shammed or otherwise. Régine and Florent would probably be the most able to assume certain organizational responsibilities, but this would be indisposed to others...
It seems unlikely that Mom will recover the parts of her brain that are no longer irrigated and she lives a good part of her time in a world with old memories. Régine is sometimes Thérèse, sometimes Colette... Her sight is very imperfect and it helps to isolate the world around her. She hears well and recognizes a little voices.
Mom complains little, doesn't seem to suffer, but has access of great weakness. I often come to the Burn to stay with her for a while and to take care of material matters.
For the cruise, it will surely be cancelled if Mom is still with us this summer. I will decide this cancellation at the latest by May, I warned the various teams that were to succeed on board.
As I told you, we planned to leave Toulon on 27 May for a trip to Austria until 7 June, then we thought we'd stay 4 or 5 days at Agnes' house for DIY, before going to Martin's wedding and returning to Toulon on 14 or 15 June. I can if necessary return to Toulon on 8 June. It would be good if you could go to Toulon once in the middle of my absence.
J-Annule on the other hand, a trip to Sweden with friends that we were to make in the first half of July, so we should be here all July.
Besides, the weather is good, the twins are going back to their parents tonight, but we have to keep Cédric who just had a carabinate measles and still has a lot of fever.
See you soon, we'll both kiss you very much.
Grandma's house in the Castellet Burn, where Grandma died of old age in her 88th year. She was fragile in the lungs, prone to emphysema, but she was very well supported by the many medicines that reduced her pain (especially cortisone).
Claude and I had come to the Brûlat a few days before, immediately after Claude's funeral in Dampierre, because the news sent by Michel was worrying us.
We were present with Michel and Christiane for her last moments. She was conscious at times, calm but with difficulties to breathe. "I didn't know it was so hard to die."
Did she tell me a little before?
She was buried in the cemetery of Sant-Laurent on 9 May 1987 with Bon Papa who has been there since July 1984.
