Summer 1983 in Vierville
Dear Granie, dear Tandree
So how are these ladies from Dampierre?I am writing to you from the Schlucht university chalet where we spent the weekend of Pentecost. Although the weather was frankly bad and I caught a nasty death we did a great walk from the Schlucht Pass to the Grand Ballon via the Markstein where we slept in a shelter.
The new neanceans are good, the few exams of late June arrive very soon, so I think I will see you in Dampierre only at the end of June before my workman's internship in July where I will work on "cores" to know the nature of the soils.
Otherwise my year, though still a little study has been frankly more relaxed than in previous years. J-en took as witnesses the week of February that I spent in the Vosges to cross-country skiing, or the Easter holidays where the ENSEM (National School of Electricity and Mechanical) had engaged a boat of 12 m 50 to participate in the cruise race of the EDHEC. This race that took place in Brest gathered 280 boats from 7m to 15 m long that were all barred by students of the Grandes Ecoles (either engineers or commercial). After the race we had a week of free time and the crew went down from Brest to the island of Yeu via Belle-Isle; the time of the 2ndnd We were brought back in superb shape to Nancy with memories and sun-filled mines.
I do flash passages in Tours from time to time, Mam has been much better for some time, but she still feels sensitive to the light. I was very sorry that I didn't see Tandree, at my last visit to Paris, it was actually Saturday, the day before you left for Dampierre, and there was no one at 17 rue de Sèvres. However, I took the time to go to the exhibition of the giant crystals of the Jardin des Plantes – it is funnyly nice and well presented, but it is not necessary to be claustrophobic, because the room is small, black and completely closed.
We have the International Theatre Festival in Nancy and I intend to enjoy it a little bit, there are a lot of foreign troops and I think it's worth it.
Meanwhile, you enjoy the garden, without too much hope to catch curvature to mow grass or weed strawberries.
For next year, I'm going to go into a flat with 2 friends to be more independent than this year, and I'm actively looking for a 3-4-piece next year.
-First of all, an increase in promotion from 70 to 90 students – engineers, it makes us a little bit angry because the premises are not infinitely stretchable.
- Finally, the new school principal gave to the future 2nd
The whole week is completely free and we have to organise it completely. We can put everything we want, as long as the whole promo participates in this famous "free week". This takes us all in good shape; the two themes for this week are: - art and technique (especially the problem of computer-assisted drawing and music)
- exploitation of the oceans
For this we will bring exhibitions, speakers, but for now we send letters to make contacts.
Here, I think I have listed all the occupations and concerns I have in Nancy, I forgot to tell you that I made good friends and that in two words I find myself well occupied with my life in the Netherlands.
I'll kiss you and tell you by the end of June, Martin.

Letter from Claude (to St Avertin) to Granie (at Versailles)
My dear Granie.
....Martin sails without sea sickness- What a chance they've come.nd 50 in this interschool regatta. I think it was fun on boats 12 meters long, it's already big...

Letter from Claude (to St Avertin) to Tandree (rue de Sèvres)Tuesday, March 83
My dear Tandree
Martina finished school regattas in Brest. He didn't have the sea sickness and seems very happy...
My schedule for the "big vacation" – it will probably be the last – starts to make a little more sense. I'll go a few days all in the early July, then on the 4th of July I drive Grandma and Bon Papa from Paris to St Laurent where I'll stay there also for a few days, then I plan a trip to Norway by car.
Finally on August 4, I board Michel's boat (my uncle from Grenoble) in Palma aux Baleares to rally to Toulon.
That's why I'd be very happy to go back to Nancy in early September to stop at Dampierre, where we didn't have the "movie".
I had a week full of extra-school activities, since I did yesterday the sailing academy championship that was held on a lake near Nancy, I won the individual championship and our team of ENSEM won in front of the other 10 teams that were engaged. In short we are selected for the French championships that take place at the end of June in Brest. As it's not quite close to Nancy, it's not sure that we will go.
This WE there is an event that only takes place every 2 years, it is the "24 hours of Stanislas Square". It is a 24 hour tank race during which tanks
With human propulsion The theme of this year's Carreer Square is "the 1900s" (I think it's about you, who was born in 1900!) L-ENSEM makes a superb fire car from a 2CV of recovery, set to the ground, with 4 Solex pedals added for propulsion.
I also go on Sunday with a friend and the Lorraine Geology Association for a mining speleo trip to Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines. I never do a speleo of my life, it's a small expedition anyway.
That's for extra-school activities, but as far as work is concerned, and even if I'm going to have two relatively quiet weeks, the year-end exams are coming up very soon, so here are other things in perspective.
I'm leaving you here, Granie, and I'll tell you soon in Dampierre, I'll kiss Martin.

Letter from Martin (from Nancy) to Granie (in Versailles)
Nancy, 15 September 1984
My dear Granie.
My little flash trip to Dampierre went very well, Régine came to pick me up at the station of St. Menou in the early morning. I was busy in the garden and in my business. I was delighted to find a huge bag of potatoes for me, as well as clothes that you had re-edited! I even took advantage of the garden, I took a sunbath – because it was very beautiful – in the garden after the lunch I took at Régine.
I picked or picked up some currants, some mirabelles, some peaches – which I hope will finish to ripen – apples, pears, some plums and hazelnuts. In short, I made good use of everything in the garden.
I also took a few bottles of cider, and Régine gave 2 cheeses, cucumbers and eggs for my debut in Nancy. Régine will start plowing since she now has a plowing machine that makes half-turns on her own. I told her that the parents were going to come to Dampierre in October. She will put apples, pears in the cellar, so Mom can take them away.
About the remediation work in Dampierre, I think you'll receive a letter that will let you know. I saw Aster seeing someone in Dampierre in the house, came to let us know orally. I understood that there were two pieces of work (our house is part of the 2nd floor).nd The Commission has decided to continue its work on the implementation of the programme.
Cost of 1era ECU 47 million, financed by the State,
Cost of 2nd ECU 25 million, financed by the State,
I think local taxes are going to rise this year.
For each house in Dampierre, we have a look (we will have to specify where we want to put it) and a second look can be installed at the expense of the private person (1800f per look).
If you wanted more information, you can call Aster after 9pm or Mr. Boivin (the mayor). Normally the next city council is in a week.
Here's my dear Granie, I'm leaving you and kissing you soon as I'm back by the end of the month in Versailles, rue Montebello.
Autumn 1984
Martin has been in Nancy since 1982. It is his third and final year.
He is in Dampierre with the 2CV of Grandpa and Tandree one day in autumn 84
Nancy, 27 September 1984
My dear Tandree
I'm writing a little note from Nancy where my classes have been well taken over now. It's a cold duck and I think it's not so bad to stay in the house like you should.
After my little flash ride to Dampierre where I was delighted to find the 2CV "in good shape", I am about to return to Versailles next week including Monday 1 and 2 October. I will phone you because I will surely go to Paris and I will be happy to give you a visit. This card I send you is the old town of Nancy just steps away from my school – ENSEM – and I spend every morning by bike.
I'll see you soon, I'll kiss you.

Map of Martin (from Brussels) to Tandrée (in Paris)
Brussels, 21 April 1985My dear Tandree,
I heard you were in the hospital, so to distract you a little bit, I'm sending you a little map of Brussels where I'm going on my internship until June.
I went to Hastière last week, where we lived in Belgium, almost 20 years ago. I found the valley of the Meuse, very nice and very neat.
I bought myself a nice bike to go work on a bike, to do some sports. My dear Tandree, I kiss you very hard and tell you good courage while waiting for you to return to 17 rue de Sèvres, Martin

promise of the future for Martin and Frédérique
Chatou, 27 November 1986
Dear parents,
I have not had much chance to take my pen because Versailles and Chatou are not far away.
But today, I am writing to tell you that we decided to marry Frédérique and I in June.
Frédérique, from the beginning of January, will officially try to be transferred to Paris next summer, staying at the CEA at the IPSN in Fontenay, or possibly at the ANDRA in Paris.
I'm kissing you both.
Martin
PS I'll be in Grenoble this weekend at Frédérique's.

My dear Claude
I'm just responding to your long letter about our Martin's marriage and all the preparations you're doing, it makes me happy and you're nice to talk to me about all this, especially since I know you don't like to write a lot. Thank you, darling, I'm thinking of this beautiful day that's getting ready without much hope of participating, which I'm sorry, but I have to realize the reality, and I'm not good at anything anymore. But I had such a beautiful life surrounded by my John, and all of you, my dears, and seeing this beautiful youth is a beautiful end of life for me.
If Frédérique and Martin can one day come to me before their wedding, it will be a real joy – and I'm already thinking of this June 13th that is very close – I'm glad that Martin found it necessary to move in to settle down to their liking, happy that a friendly priest can come to them, you have already kept all the details, and if Yves can come a little to me, he will tell me all that I will live with you all from the bottom of my heart.
