Letter from Claude to Fanny, back to Lakanal High School in October 46

"This morning, it was the beginning of the season, and the whole series of emotions when we don't know the comrades or the institution.
The girls are usually very friendly. We had this morning chemistry, 2 hours of philosophy and nat science. I have 9 hours of philosophy a week, there is something to radote! At the moment we are 14 students, but those who are going to go back to school.
(first baccalaureate that of the end of 1st) And I'll have it soon. I go to class three times at 9:1/2, live the fat morning.
It's bad weather again, but try to walk around the mountain when Dad is with you, go on excursions! I envy you in advance, because for us there's the work that takes over. But I don't think I'm gonna be a bookie rat. I already thought and decided to do enough to get the second part of the bac!
Everything is fine now. I'm taking a medicine that seems excellent, which gives me appetite. It's a recalcifier of "panbial".
Tandrée initiated us to the first sewing work, we learned to sew by machine and finished an old apron! which dates from 1926.
I'm leaving you because I'm going to school.
I kiss you very much, Claude.

In 1947-48, she passed the certificate of Modern and Contemporary History.
In 1948-50, she passed the certificate of history of the Middle Ages in 2 years, delayed by several long stays in rest homes in Argueil and Combloux (see chapters 65 and 66).
In 1950-51 she passed the certificates of Ancient History and Ancient Art History, which gave her the rank of Licencée de Lettres.

"Species on the first day
My dear mother
You must make lizard on the coast, feet in salt water and the sun sending its hot rays on your delicate skin. Happy mortal of this rich country!
Today it is a time worthy of rivalry with that of the French Riviera and Paris almost smelled poetry and flowers. I was this afternoon listening wisely to my lessons. "Social ideas in the 19th century" will soon convert me to socialism - or perhaps even to communism (it is time moreover before the great evening comes!) Our teacher is really good: he is a crowds stirred.

Saturday and Sunday I was to change my mind at the weekend. start at 6h1/2 in the evening, 10 km on foot - Fanny claims 5 - arrived in a farm with thick and high walls with big barking dogs to welcome us - very cinematic in short - To lie at midnight after a very intellectual vigil. fugitive sleep and rats in straw and to finish curvature due to the hardness of the floor and heavyness of the bag. The next morning to not change the traditions we did the cooking in a wood, and in the afternoon we were seeing working families and old ones. The people of ?? are a little too intellectual perhaps so that it becomes sometimes tiring or at least unrelenting to chat with them.
I was registered for the study trip from Brittany - back on Saturday morning in Paris - but I have little chance of being accepted because there are 30 registered and 15 places given priority to the elders.
I have been at the Museum of Modern Art twice; I hope you have fallen into ecstasy before the modern sculptures of Gargallo and Zadkine. I am deeply disappointed to see that Vonette has not even noticed them. Christ at the Mount of Olives of Hermine is well - your painting will be worth a thousand and a hundred - but I have not even noticed Guérin (?) . Having seen the exhibition Klee, she has greatly liked me - Vonette told me not to understand it - definitely we do not have the same taste...
Tandrée always gets so upset, Good Mom has some "diseases". fanny doesn't turn bad (at least ??) Dad is fine and I feel unbalanced. After these humorous words, I tell you rest well and especially have fun.

"Assisi on August 14
My old Claude I've been in Assisi for five days - I left like this, I wrote afterwards.
I saw that you were received, what are you going to do now, geo, ancient history? My brother is glued for the second time to the oral of the history aggregate - Yvonne Kirchner is received, Madeleine Vaucelles whom Fanny probably knows, glued too. I found Assisi and the monastery as if only a few days had I left them.
Good holidays for both of you, write me when you want. From my convent in Italy I will pray for all my friends.
Mr. Lafforgue Monastery of the French Clares Colettinis, Assisi Italy
Here against another letter from Monique Lafforgue, very long, telling in detail his life as a nun, sitting January 8, 1951
Here is the beginning of the letter:

"Assisi on 8 January 1951
Dear Claude
Thank you for your letter of September, which made me very happy, you will see that I have not forgotten you since I finally answer you. All my good wishes and year to share with your sister. What should be wished you outside of the academic successes to which you do not attach excessive importance, no doubt, desire you like all the girls of 20 years or more to know your way, know what God wants from you, then I will ask for you to enlighten you and that his Love is always a reality for you.
So after a good holiday you got back to work, which you spent in October, I prayed for you at the time of the re-entry and exams and thinking about my friends and my brother who were coming home, I rubbed my hands back to Assisi and finished with the exams, some good memories that my four years of Sorbonne left me; so you're confused with geography, there seemed to be a change for geogene. In Ancient there is much to do, because more than in the Middle Ages we lack the notions, but it's interesting especially for Latinists.
-
Claude chose in October 1950 to prepare the certificate of Ancient History, rather than Geography, after having made Modern and Contemporary History (1947-48) and History of the Middle Ages (in 2 years 1948-50) -.................".

Letter from Rome of 1952, 25 July

Letter from Claude to Granie, who must be on rest somewhere in the countryside, but not in Versailles.
Claude has just arrived in Dampierre for Easter, after spending a moment in Brittany (8 or 15 days?) in geological course, as part of his certificate of geography, so it is in 1952 or 53, probably

"

" My dear Mom,
Like a wise little girl, I took the train on my own Saturday and came to Dampierre to join the smala.
My week in Brittany was amazing. We were walking a lot to tell the truth - we were sometimes 40 km a day, but the average was 20 km - but as I am solid, I was absolutely not tired. All the expeditions were well chosen and I could contemplate the green groves surrounded by trees, a little at the Van Gogh; the mooring of flowering agreers; and the woods dotted with lakes. Of course we were leaning on the rocks, explaining why hollows and bumps... and now I am an enthusiastic about tectonic geology etc. for without learning a lot, I can say that at least I have acquired the scientific meaning of nature in this journey.
What I liked was naturally the last day spent by the sea on the coast of Erquy at Val André. Val André is atrocious but the coast is so lovely. We got off our feet, and we ran like rock to rock, falling into the puddles of water, swallowing mussels and shells; then we got in a small outfit and played sirens in the water. It was cold but wore wonderfully and the wonderful sun warmed us up.
In the afternoon we were a holy Friday, the Papists made a way of the cross, and then as it was definitely very hot we got wet after climbing in the rocks.
Every day we slept in a different place; we ate well - and we all had a good appetite.
The middle was very amusing... ....fortunately we were half a dozen who formed an aristocratic agora, and indeed very pleasant. There were some who had spirit and made everyone laugh......I'm delighted with my trip, and whenever you can go by the mountains and by the way, you have to enjoy it.
Since I was in Dampierre, I had enough rest, because I have my feet boiled. Yesterday the ??? came and we sat down at the Hoilleux - chickens moult cakes etc. - and today I decreed to be of cooking because nothing is more killing than being four women to turn in a room. They all have a liverache and I think that a potato purée will suffice them.
Bring me some nice stones and rest well
Big kisses of your big girl, Claude.
