Extracts from the letter from Maurice Rougier of 11 April 1940, dated from qu'a partir de Sedan, addressed to Granie in Cancon

"11 April
My darling
I'm glad you heard from us today, your blood pressure is normal, it's perfect and there's no reason to give too much credulity to the pendulumist. As much as you're happy with your doctor, it's huge when you're taking care of yourself, But above all, do everything he tells you.,
We are following the events with anxiety, I think this time Hitler has made a bad commitment and the response will be tough, we were looking for a battlefield and he gave it to us.
For Poles interned in Romania it seems true that many have returned
(or retained?) You're in the middle of all your meteques, beware of Russian.
I'm sending you an excerpt from the "Time" about vacations, it's a project, but then they would only have a month or a half of great vacation.
(Fanny and Claude) He said he could prepare the fifth by staying at the public school (the community of Cancon) and taking rehearsals of Latin and English.
I kiss you, my dear.
Your Mauritius

My darling
Received your letter this morning, it's going very fast.
..... Norway's news is good: half of them are
(very exaggerated) The British have managed to lay a minefield in the Baltic Sea. (false) The German information we listen to every day is not very triumphant...

My darling
I am bored with the news you send me about you, but you know that it is the digestive tract you must treat yourself, you would have done better to go to a diet home. Finally this is nothing if your sleep has returned.
The operations seem to continue favourably in Norway. Although the press releases are quite discreet, finally we are in Narvik and their communication line is closed, we should now take over the other ports.
(c) all the major ports of Norway) Yesterday we heard on the radio the talk of Goebbels, what a blow my friends! and what lies he makes the boaches swallow!
I just got told that I was going to my class on Sunday, and I'm bored about my correspondence from the point of view of the address to be put on.

My darling
This morning, your letter from Saturday announcing your departure for Sunday. What a journey! But you must have seen the whole of the Gascony from south to north, is this pretty? Perhaps you preferred to sleep in Agen, it was perhaps less tiring and also cheaper than a taxi.
(Granie seems to have been on the Pyrenees for a few days, for rest??, for holidays with children or not??)
I'm glad your doctor has been diagnosed, of course, it's nothing serious and you have to regain confidence in yourself. You've come back to Cancon with the children, don't let yourself go mad, walk around, see Mrs.... , get out on a bicycle without getting too tired. About my beca is coming and what a state, I've never heard of it.
Maybe you'd have to decide something for the holidays if you want to rent. If you're afraid of getting tired, you could look for a good one.
I am appointed for an aerial photo interpretation course in Meaux from May 20 to 28. I have inquired, you can not join me there, you should come to Paris where we could meet, it seems every night, but I fear that this stay will not benefit you from the health and then you will be alone all day long, what do you think? And there are also the cocottes that you cannot leave alone to Mother if Cecile is not there.
Quickly with your new and tender kisses
your country

The kids' mushroom is still on my table, it starts to be a little bit faded but it can still be. This date reminds me last year, you remember we had been riding around the same time in the woods to get some, we almost lost ourselves and it was a cock song that had been on our way to the beach.
put on the right track.
...........
We will lose the ..?. of Rome which has been very unpleasant to us for some eight years, so that these macaronis are meditating on every good occasion. The news of Norway was not very good today, the boaches advance on Trondjheim, but it is nothing serious, it is like in Poland, a motorized column, probably launched in arrows.
Tomorrow morning I'm doing a little walk-in from 8am to noon, so it's gonna get me out of here a little bit, as long as it's beautiful!

Sunday, 4 May 1940
....Before yesterday, at the time I usually wrote to you I had gone to listen to a very interesting lecture on the "Role of the Navy in the Empire" made by a distinguished man Mr. Moynet former chief of staff of Mr.Tardieu, professor at the Naval War School etc.. etc.. Yesterday it was at a Cortot concert that we were invited after dinner, we were taken there by car, back at midnight, concert very successful with the army musical troupe, I will send you the program tomorrow, it remained in my pocket....
....The news from Norway is not very good, what will happen at the second phase of which Mr Chamberlain speaks in his speech, the Boches were ahead of us in this operation and we could not intercept their communications enough so that they could bring there more people than we, either by sea or by their transport aircraft.
Mother wrote me and told me she found you a good look and more fun than you left, so do you, read, go out, don't think about your stories that I won't talk to you about anymore, but tell me how it's going....

....it seems that Lille is a real English scoundrel....

......The girls must be very happy, especially the fannette, to get a tailor's coat, hopefully he won't be missed. I took advantage of my last internship to make me do a panties, it's not bad but cost me 800 balls.

"Monday, May 8, 1940
My dear Mother
Thank you for your good letter. I'm glad you found more training in Suzanne, that she continues to treat herself, it's boring that she can't do you any more work, but I think her health is at the cost of her rest. In any case I am very happy to know with you and Cecile who understood her condition and helped her accordingly.
How's the young Colette who just got her surgery, Suzanne will probably tell me about it in her letter that I hope to receive tomorrow.
Nothing new here is boring that our Norwegian affairs have not found better, it is probably the danger on the Mediterranean side that led us to stop, and finally it is only an episode of a war that will probably be long and hard....
