Transcript of the letter from Maurice Rougier of 12 August 1918
"12 August 1918
As you saw in the press release, we attacked before yesterday morning.
Well, it worked out the Boche fell in front of us for 12 km.
Unfortunately, I was intoxicated by tear gas and was evacuated yesterday morning from Conchy les Pots. I have a very acute conjunctivitis that prevents me from seeing anything. I suffered a lot but today it's better, I'll be cured in a few days.
The gas was tear gas that they sent us all night from the 9th to the 10th in a wood where I had a Mortiers's Cie (?) who was supposed to do IT (indirect shooting??)
Don't you (worrying) So I don't have anything in my lung.
I kiss you MR
HOE 36 Sector 164
I don't know if I'm gonna stay at this address, I'll keep you informed."
(In fact, it wasn't tear gas, it was watery, and his lung was also affected. It seems he didn't want to tell his family.)
