1951-52, Yves, Second Lieutenant
15th Air Engineer Regiment in Toul
811
For one year, from October 1951 to September 30, 1952, I made a Milt service as Sub-Lieutenant, in the Air Bases department. It started with 2 months of "Air" training at the Air School in Salon-de-Provence, then I was Ten months in the air force, 15th Air Engineer Regiment, in Toul.
(I was staying at the house, moving on 125cc motorcycle)
The 15th Engineer was an Army unit specialized in the construction of field military airfields, following the model of similar units of the American army. We were also equipped with what remained (very little, old and almost useless) of the equipment supplied by the United States in 1943-45 for the war against the Germans.
In the course of 1952, we were completely reequipped by the USA, via NATO, with new equipment, given as a result of Europe's rearmament in view of the risk of aggression by the USSR. The Korean war waged by Communist North Korea and the blockade of Berlin by Soviet forces had shown that this risk was quite real and concrete.

In 1952, it was also the time when NATO was re-arming urgently after the 45s to 49s when the war was believed to have ended. The Cold War had begun and in the airfield, hundreds of military airfields were built in France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and England, as well as a tight network of pipelines to supply them with kerosene from the Atlantic ports. surrender to a US Air Force wing, from the newly constructed airfield at Rosières
