Death Nany 1941
723
Nany died at the Château de Vierville on February 17, 1941. I never knew exactly what disease. She may have had cancer. In previous years, she often complained about her health: heart, liver, anaemia, bronchitis, nothing very specific. At Christmas 40, she had been in a clinic in Bayeux. At the time of her death, her old servant Martha was there and also Philippe. German officers were staying in one or two rooms on the 2nd floor, and the ordinances were in the communes, which sometimes housed horses.
Nanny was an authoritarian grandmother, and she made a point of dealing with the Germans who had only very partially occupied the rooms at the castle until 1944, and who perhaps respected her with some concern in front of her unamended gaze.
Brigitte, her 16-year-old daughter, was also there and tells us about it:
"Unless there were 14 officers and their orders, the door was in the old laundry room and the wood was full of trucks and military vehicles. I forgot to lock the gate and go get the bread, (and the Germans had entered).
I still see Nany, already very sick and in a bathrobe waiting standing on the 1st floor, the cane in hand. Five great officers were riding on the 1st by the large staircase. When they arrived at his height, she lifted her cane to keep them away and asked them to stop there. In front of her authority, they actually stopped to talk.
Father Dubois, then mayor, had managed to avoid the occupation of the house until July 40, but it could not last. From September, October 40, there was only the colonel and his order. Towards the end of 41, the officer, a captain installed the Kommandantur in the room of "Tio Mio", the rest of the officers being with the mess at the Than mansion. This was a lot of aisles and came, but there again it did not last."
