Letters from Jean Hausermann to Jean Cordelle and Nany, November 40 and February 41

Jean Hausermann in Rosario, in Jean Cordelle, in the Hersent du Blanc office, in the free zone

Rosario, November 30, 1940

My dear Jean,

We have heard from you a long time ago, and what we read does not encourage us to believe that the correspondence is being restored. I am therefore concerned about the fate of this letter.

We have received news from Toulon, where it goes as well as possible, since it has been officially learned that Rémy Rousseau died of his wounds, near Maubeuge where he had been shot, in side (side bus) by a quinta colonna (5nd column) Or a parachute on a road not yet considered dangerous, on 17 May. He would have died the same day, it is infinitely sad for his wife Paulette, three young people, including the last qq months. She will have lost successively, her husband, her brother-in-law, a daughter and her brother. I do not know how winter will happen for them... and for all of you. What will be your supply? – The old people also pay their tribute, an uncle to my family, Henry, the adviser to the court of cassation, has just disappeared; every letter brings us new deeds.

Our health is good, summer has not been too wet, although already very hot. The small ones grow well, the restrictions are unknown here, on the contrary, we end up distributing corn, meat, free of charge. There are 7 million tons of corn that must be disposed of at all costs.
Germaine is suffering a very strong moral shock and I am watching over her; she does not lack reasons to fear for her brother prisoner in Pomerania, whose usual –30° cold will weigh hard on his colonial temperament. He dies of hunger and begs that he is sent something, the packages do not all arrive and not all their contents either.

By articles of (Andre) Mauritian, (Jules) In what is still possible, to hope for a better situation, we think that everything is not lost yet, and that too much servility towards the occupants is not yet possible. It is impossible to extend here, in order to avoid what you guess, but have Still There are beautiful people who fight, rage in the heart and will fight until the last breath. I regret that I am not allowed to do the same. Trust, better days can come... but then, as we will have to lose our laziness and selfishness.

Here it goes, the Company works and my staff is helping me very well. Fortunately, the river has fallen and we are doing big situations at the work of Conservation. (Port of Rosario, 1942).

I'll tell you about my predecessor's maté. (Jean Cordelle's money, deposited in Argentina). Everything is in order, as a result of certain repayments, liquidity becomes important; perhaps there is reason to take qq securities so as not to leave it unproductive.

...do you want to pass on the attached sheet to Mom – thank you – we meet to kiss you very affectionately, Jean Hausermann

Jean Hausermann in Nany

Buenos Aires, 12 February 1941(Nany will die on February 17th in Vierville)

My dear mother, I received your good letter from Jean Cordelle on November 5. Then by a letter from the Port Society, your letter from the clinic, written by the 24-XII. A not very happy Christmas for you, dear Nany, but you had to feel our thoughts very close to you, and...hot, certainly, even though we were enjoying the little humid heat. We thought of you, there was a beautiful Christmas tree, which we did not want to deprive the children of, and after discovering the treasures back, we shocked our drinks for you, my dears, firmly believing in a better future. Only lady we have to put ourselves there and we will put it; we feel the rage that takes you to look at what we are doing.they have made our France, those who thought they were French and the others; to us now, is not that dear mother; to us the commands and I am of course that the dear boys are in my opinion. I would like to converse with all this with you, with your beautiful energy, we would get along well, once again. Close our eyes on the "tourists" (Germans)So my mom had to get her to be very careful, you know you're getting there... I feel like I should help the sisters watch over you. (Philippe was to be in Vierville recovering from her pleurisy caught in June 40 at the end of the break-up) So here you are back in the old house, where you are well; I prefer to know you there than in Paris. And you know what they say about you here: and Jean-Louis said to me: And is Nany going into the vegetable garden? And I answer: of course, my old man, plant carrots, pick the fruits. My people are all in Riachuelo, it's almost cold. Germaine takes over in this quiet countryside; she needed it; the news of Toulon is not bad: everyone is keen to help, to ingeniate. Our beautiful France, we feel an admiration for her. Here, from everywhere, we're helping you, even we're fighting. I'm sorry that I can only do it economically.
We're all fine. Good kisses, my mother. Be careful of you, and think of the good talk we'll do. Do you remember our conversation at 3:00 in the morning on the day I arrived?!. We were done with it, though we said "good evening" more than 10 times. I see that you didn't get anything from my correspondence cards by Lati Condor.

Jean Hausermann to Jean Cordelle, the same day

Buenos Aires, 12 February 1941

My dear John, I received your letter to the White on December 19, and thank you for the news, we are so eager to do so here. I was sorry about the news from Mom, realizing what the tourists' presence should mean to her. (Germans) I'm going to put a word in her, you want to send her, I see that the correspondence cards by Lati Condor do not reach her. Write us every time you have it, we are very concerned for you, in all respects. Events seem to be rushing. We share here your admiration for Marshal Pétain, we must follow him, but don't forget the colossal efforts that are being made elsewhere.

What's the news? Nothing interesting as you might think: people are playing with fire here and eating to die, we're having fun, taking a vacation. (England) There is a sharp conflict between the executive and political powers, which blocks everything: imagine that the budget is not yet voted, nor even discussed! And then the economic situation is not beautiful, we are lion of the autarchy. Ask Gilbert that he shows you the decree on Tucuman (probably the decision to cancel the competition for an irrigation dam in Tucuman province)Castello is furious; we may be able to get the prizes distributed (we have the 1ir), but the case seems to me on a nice garage.
We are all fine; Germaine and the children are in Riachuelo, where it is rather cool this year. Jean-Paul has spent his 3° and 4° Argentinian grado. He will do the quinto this year, in anticipation of the French high school of BA, to which he will be moored. We will live BA, where more and more business leads.
Here you will find the baptism certificate for Yves (for my 1era Communion, scheduled for 8 May 1941). Grenon ensures that the official room is not necessary. However, at your disposal.
You want to tell my predecessor (cad Jean Cordelle himself) that the maté (Money invested in Argentina) The money is going to be better, but as a result of repayments, the cash is going to increase: there is room for him to take securities; the word "agreement" will suffice.
We all kiss you very affectionately; tell the dear boys that I think of them, the young France. Brigitte must be a big girl. Tell Georges that I received his letter from the "Florida" (perhaps a written letter from the boat that had to bring Tonton Georges back from Tunisia to France after the armistice), that my next letter is for him. Congratulations to the sisters for their guts. Afflictly Jean
