Stay in Coutances, rue de Tourville,
1939-40
711
From October 1939 to June 1940, we were in Coutances, housed in a rented house, rue de Tourville, all together, the Chedals, the Cordelles, and Bonne-maman, (except the 3 mobilized: Tonton Georges, Papa and Philippe). There were also the 2 good ones, Clementine for the Cordelles and the Chedals.
Jean-Pierre and François were in Taupe, Michel in hypotaupe, Brigitte in high school and I in 6th in an annex of the high school, for the first time at the school (I had passed the entrance exam in 6th grade, they didn't have to pay attention to my age: 9 years, because my results on the exam were, it seems, considered very mediocre, I was too young 2 years and it weighed on my high school life for years, until the baccalaureate, practically; since I had never been in class, the change of scenery was profound and I never adapted well)
Nany, after her summer 39 in Vierville, had not returned to winter in Paris in her apartment on the 4th floor of 27 B. de Lamballe (near that of the Chedals). Paris was almost empty, all the high schools and schools folded in the province. Nany had stayed at the Château de Vierville to spend the winter with Martha, his maid for many years. She wrote frequently and regularly in the Hausermanns in Argentina, and these letters are very interesting to read (see table opposite).
