Nany to Jean and Germaine Hausermann in Rosario in February 1940

ViervilleTuesday, February 6, 1940(EXTRACTS)

Sad birthday (Daddy's death, February 6, 1924) I prayed for you all my dear ones, trusting you to your dear father as yesterday when I thought of my Titi, I confided more especially to his Daddy....

... it leads to talk about our poor Muscadet, of which I had indirectly news: some of the beautiful and strong Norman horses left from the 1stera It seems that they have missed the care and food they have been given, and that our farming operations are barely enough for the current work.

... All health is good at home, Jean C. has definitely returned to the back where he found a well-being that he no longer knew, and then it's less cold, it rains....

.... A good letter from my Phil, to whom I send a little bread of fresh butter every week to decorate his bread... and that of his comrades, tells me that he is acting as sergeant; there was a catch of arms, the parade was magnificent! I doubt it and I would have liked to take a look. .... The father of his comrade Marchand, colonel and chief of staff, I do not know where, writes to Suzon that his body – genius – will be carried, and that here soon Phil would leave at the camp of Satory to take delivery of cars.
Good news of George, who must be in possession of his Mimi (Marcel Hersent)...for X time. (Georges Chedal) from the South of Tunisia where he was with some officials for I do not know what needs; his business develops well and he seems happy, we send him an accountant.... The brave Georges did not forget the date of 6/2 (Daddy's death in 1924). I just got a good and loving dispatch reminding me,

... I saw my PhD student yesterday who didn't change anything to my treatment that a little more uplifting for the heart that doesn't decide to rejuvenate. Sacred heart, go! It will really be better when I can make a walk every day in the garden, it is still impossible; yet I took advantage of a ray of sun to do before yesterday, leaning on my cane and embalmed like a Finnish (These frequent references to Finland remind us that this country is at this time at war with the USSR and therefore our de facto ally), the turn of my vegetable garden that I found well damaged by the frost. Leon works to cut the fruit trees. The flea hedges have finished undergoing their mutilation, and I was able to clear entirely the tower that borders the road, the laurels half dead that bordered it did not add anything to these old stones, I had replanted in the bottom some fusans; in a few years it will be very good – my great nephews will have to do this –

I ordered to Caen some cypresses from Lambert to replace at least one of those that I had planted around our cabin on the beach; some charcoals on the edge of the road wall were burned by seawater during a great tide, and this despite the care I had taken to shelter them with this scourge. (?) ; these beautiful red virgin vines you like, little Maine, along the farm buildings, it will brighten up on this side, also at the foot of a pawlownia whose only remaining branch is a trunk on the front lawn. The pawlownia that I planted a few years ago grew straight as an i. It will probably be my acquisitions for the year, I would like to redo all the fence that takes from the post, by Dosso, if the sum is not too exaggerated. I will do the other side another time.

...I'm waiting for our Simon this afternoon for three days...

The exam of the X will be held in Coutances for our guys, it's an advantage, they'll be in their middle...They're all fine, but it's hard work for the big ones that we heat up (Michel will probably pass the exam from Navale to Cherbourg, but it's only a try of the rest).

...I... finished a big sweater that will go to the front for one of our little soldiers from Vierville who asked me. J... will join some gourmets and a little viatic because he is a father of two children; the mother trait to help live, and the allowance granted by the State allows only the indispensable.

Wednesday 7/2

Our Simon arrived yesterday as fresh as a rose, and having grown at 1kg1/2, we chatted together like pees. She went to flower the dear tomb of beautiful purple eyelets and mimosas that she had brought (I didn't have a flower here); she was bringing good news from all of them and will stay until Saturday. L-on must send you pictures, you will see that Normandy can not envy Finland; and you will admire the Corporal; The boys decided to adopt the ski pants on the big mountain shoe, there was only that that held and they continue now, even Yves who finds it to keep him warmer than the short pants. It grows him! He also inaugurated the hairstyle rejected back, like the big ones....

... Yes our soldiers were cold, -25° was customary, and even now it is thawing but with a thickness of ice on the roads that made the return of John's division to the back very delicate. However, Jean's cars arrived without any trouble, after miracles of balance by the drivers.
... Georges recommends not to sound the special assignment of Mimi to Bizerte; I suppose he will soon be in France and actively taking care of the house (Hersent)The white molluscs would need it. It's a general outcry about them. All this would require rejuvenation.

.... Simon just received a pair of natural silk stockings (of) He was a good boy who supported his elderly parents and was deprived of many things. Simon knitted for him, and he had no choice but to take away his father's name.era permission he returned to work in a knitted to offer some of his work to his godmother. The gesture is touching, his letters too.
...many of the old classes have passed a new revision. Some, including Ygouf's son, were taken over.

I kiss you all 4 very tenderly for both of us – Simon – The greeting of our always brave people

your Nany

... Here I miss myself a little by my fire, for after having had a few days if not pleasant at least we returned in the polar cold, fortunately without that lasting, since this morning the thermometer marks +10°, if there was only a little sun but it is the grey mist you know well. Really in spring! Never did I want the blue sky and the heat so much; I thought I had some indigestion taken in the past for my whole life; the years are taking care of making me change my mind. I am better, however, and from 2h1/2 to 3h in the afternoon, I feel almost able to make a small It's all the hypotensive things I do; there's not much to do there but live with his evil. I'll have to see the little doctor in the first place.ers March days; I asked him to follow me like this every month. His persuasive sweetness wants me to believe that with spring, sun, etc!

I'm waiting for your eldest daughter to spend the day on Thursday, she's been rid of her chickenpox, which was benign, but she's still being poisoned until the end of the week for Yves, who came out of her flu yesterday.
Simon was able to go to Paris 24 hours with his Jean, he had been called to the Ministry of Disarmament. (sic) Simon found him a good mine, fattened, and he needed some of the old man. They had come down to the Terminus where they found a bath and a warm room; our apartments on Lamballe Avenue are uninhabitable. They had signed the Corporal, but he could not get the permission to come to lunch with them, yet it was not far from Paris. They had the idea of going to share his lunch in some guinguette of the place, but arrived too late, the Corporal had lunch. He was famously happy to find well-known figures and that the race he had piqued by seeing his visitors showed them the pleasure they had done to him. He was fine, a beautiful mine.

Simon came home with a carabinate pharyngitis and it's not her I spoke to this morning on the phone, but your elder.

Good news of Georges who owns his Mimi in Bizerte. He is apparently charming, taking his meals with him, and talking about some changes to make at the office. He slowly mocks the 3 old beards that populate Le Blanc (it might be better to rejuvenate them). They almost were frozen in the office because the Beaujon (who live in the house where they are installed) had forgotten to order wood. It took Georges Hersenten to send a full load of d-Azay (Castle d'Azay le Féron, residence of Georges H.)...And they are especially concerned about their little life, which explains why you wait in vain for an answer to your letters....

We review the old classes and some are being brought back to work to allow others to return to their places. Our brave farmers need the help of their husbands to finish the tillage and prepare the harvest. I saw Dubois who learned that Jacques de Mons was recalled, he can obviously do services to the army... Nothing new in our small village, the school canteen will definitely not be reorganized, we distribute bread to large families and old people but the first ones are very much helped now by the allowances that the state distributes – not without reason – and moreover the fathers are now at their home. So I always asked Dubois to reserve for one unexpected moment.
We always have great food facilities, bread (slightly less good) is not rationed, neither sugar nor coffee, we are 3 days without meat, but there is still poultry and fish. The main thing is to keep our soldiers a large bowl.

A phone call (still that good phone!) from Pommier, Flushed, m á announced that he was finally in possession of the 16 tickets due by the Gervais estate. J á á pushed a of! He was very skillful and very patient this brave notary....

I'm still actively knitting and will continue this summer... for next winter. I continue to receive the visit of our activists who came on leave. They all look nice, and don't complain; they have all spent terrible days at the time of the cold. It's a pleasure for me to regarn some purses a little flat, which always brings smile.
Wednesday -......The time to turn on the right side decidedly and yesterday, leaning on my cane I was able to go to the vegetable garden where Leon treated his peaches (which aria!) he proudly showed me, praying to tell Mrs. Jean, the famous vines that Mr. Leterrier gave him and that he carefully cut and plucked "Mme Jeanmangera of grapes on his next trip". I am skeptical and commit you in advance, my dear Maine, to arm you with courage so as not to make the grimace
....Have you received my Titi's book for his party? There is another one on the way to my Jean-Paul.

I'm sure the tap is shut down in the service stairway but I think that by the pipe buried water goes into the part of the house where the toilets are. So it's impossible to do the drain. I'll wait, because here are the nice days.

.... A letter from Maine of the Riachuelo, which Simon sent to me by Suzon confides in fact that she regains courage, God knows if I rejoice! Life resumes its rights, all those who have been struck know well, pain does not fade, it calms, changes without one seeing it....God does well what he does!

Here it's okay, I can't complain, I went out with your elder in a car, but two days ago that I was leaning on my cane. It's a famous progress that I attributed to the less harsh temperature, the sun that occasionally makes its appearance.Suzon who arrived Thursday with his Bison, stayed until Sunday after lunch, between then and by phone Simon told us that hardly recovered from his flu Yves had measles, quite strong. It's fortunately quite short and already he has no more fever, but he remains pestified until the Easter holidays where I wait for them all. The girl who hasn't had measles is already infected with it, if She must have it, and in the end it would be better to finish it off. Suzon would not be angry that it was done, and that's why she left for Coutances without waiting for the time frame.
All the rest of the house is well, except JP . . . . Suzon and Georges are very tormented, I understand them, but We need to JP has a paper in his pocket before it is incorporated, and it may be delayed for 3 to 6 months. The barracks are full of men who we know are not doing and the class 39 which was to be called in April will be only half as long. It must calm you, my John, when you deplore with Canonne not being at the front. .... There are so many reserve officers that regiments are entirely composed of them, for example that of Jean C. The active officers are in the depots and Dautry has just given a famous sweep in his ministry to send them back to the regiments and fill empty places by reserve officers. At least it was the news transmitted by Gaby to his brother-in-law who saw him in Paris.

.....Nothing else in our village, old men fall apart one after another, it's their age, we bury Father Brisset, former mailman and old Father Célestin at the most.....

.....Good news of Georges still in possession of a boss Nice He has just taken 45 million jobs, which is a pleasure, and it is possible that Sagne is still mobilized there. Bousquet is in Tunisia, he would have liked to take Georges to his mine, (with his car) it reminds me of Father's journey! But Georges has been challenged, I am not angry, there are those who know too well how to enjoy the facilities of others.
.....This leads to a request from... not to talk about her maté as much as possible, because your letters are sometimes open. All this is not very beautiful, and the beautiful relics you have just received from your little aviator deserve more attention. Your two sons will be guarded after you.

Dagoubert worked all week to repair the damage caused by the frost, a real disaster, especially in my bathroom, it was necessary to remove the bathtub, lift 3 pipes from Suzon's, one was exhausted as the ceiling passed! I guess my orders to empty all the pipes were badly executed by our people that doesn't understand, and I was unable to go and put my nose on there. We're not even in there, Jeanne just told me that it flows near the reservoir; provided it is enough to put a cement plate back on as it has already been done! I still have the new tank, but it's a whole aria to put it down and the village is empty of young people who could take care of it. One should cut down a corner of the wall of the engine room to get it through and up. What I can enrag from being about without personal means to monitor our people closely. They're just good at making potatoes (it's time).
With Suzon we went for a few walks; we always had great pleasure; we went to Campigny where there are 2 old castles; but we will go back to visit the church where 4 people are sitting, and also a beautiful Renaissance fireplace in a farm. It's buried in the countryside, all 15 km from La Mine and it's wondered why all this luxury and to whom it was used! The paths that lead there are not good! What was it supposed to be under Louis XII or François 1ir ?

Good news from Jean C. who is resting in the Basse Vosges and our corporal who will be equipped before leaving for a motorcycle. Suzon is very much interested in going to Vernouillet for Sunday; I strongly encourage him; in a short time she will have no ease of doing so, because in a month it will be the departure for the rear front, then the front... finished near safety, because unfortunately there are always, but still victims in the hands every day.

Wednesday, 28/2 1940.... I just saw Dagoubert for the tank leak; after exposing that the repair was very difficult – I would say that nothing was impossible and that it was necessary to do so, it turns out that it is not the tank, but a lead pipe that passes through the back that is exhausted. This will therefore be done without too much harm. This has made it possible to find that the ceiling of the engine room is dwindling terribly... idem in the place where the carts are placed. The weight of the earth ceilings is caused by this; But what a repair!... I'm very old to start all this and besides there is not a worker here at the moment who can do it. I really need to have one of my men near me to take care of this, my Jean! ...

When do you think you're gonna see your trio again? (What is it??)And I guess we have to wait very impatiently at Riachuelo!
