Vierville 1939, construction of a canoe

694

Extract from the letter of Nany to Tutouni and Aunt Maine on July 28, 1939

"Our boys build a new canoe with great skill and care, from which they bought the plans in Paris. The yard is set up near the pigeon-house and I am with interest the walk of their work. It can be said that they are taken by themselves, doing the orders of wood, helping out mechanical saws of our carpenters in the village, delighted themselves to participate in the execution. Since yesterday, Jeanne's laundry machine has been containing water that is full of broths and where wood must be used more easily, so we have built an open-air fireplace, which Michel was feeding all day long; they were there at 9:1/2 a.m. yesterday. The light wooden hull whose frame(?) will disappear when it is time to do so will be covered with a strong canvas that we dream of painting in black, to make more original with red and white nets under the edge dish(?) All this provided with the participation of each boy's purse, without any of the parents, nor even Nani!!! Jean C. who naturally inspected the works and expressed his satisfaction; more even, almost his admiration for their know-how. Jean-Pierre and François are the two leaders of the affair and certainly also the most apt ones, and he is so active that we barely take the time to make the daily dip at the beach and a little canoe ride!"

(I think François remembers many interesting details, the origins of the project, theera order cancelled, the carpenter chosen, the interest of having a left-hand man in the team, the role of Brigitte, etc..)

Extract from the letter of Nany to Tutouni and Aunt Maine on August 11, 1939

"The boys finish their boat, they lack some ingredient to make the inside more waterproof. Georges has to bring it to them. A shot of painting and it will be finished. I proposed a sensational baptism that was accepted with enthusiasm."

Extract from Nany's letter to Tutouni and Aunt Maine on 1 September 1939
"The boat is finally over, beautifulThe word is not too strong, and it was built with all the desirable care. We passed a certain coating "pores mouth" that makes the canvas well waterproof and there passed 2 layers of a certain painting "a proposito". I don't know what the bottoms are, the parents have clogged holes, the mothers made a veil on the pattern of the one at the other canoe. Also this morning at 5 am, because of the tide, they went to pick a dish of famous mussels on the big rocks of the Perceived. We are happy to see them enjoy life again. J á had imagined a baptism sensea, it cannot be discussed, but last night before putting the boat in water, we baptized him with holy water by uttering the sacramental words."

1939 Vierville
Memories of Francis

Canoeing Episode:
- gift of a wooden canoe (1938); it is little for 4 people.
-Current aluminum canoe shell, to be fitted with wooden complements, family opposition
- Decision to make the canoe ourselves; plans...
-Need a ribbon saw; choice of carpenter (discussed by the family: husband of the epicier, daughter of the communist of V.);
- use of the tattoo washer to bend couples with steam
- Rebuke of the family, weakening with time and good appearance, to go to admiration
- Counting by Yves of the number of copper nails used to assemble the border on the couples (drilling, placing the nail, riveting)
- decision to put a waterproof canvas; participation of Brigite for the purchase.
-1st launch on 1 September 1939, mussels at Roche Marcelle, on return, declaration of war, and abandonment of the plan of descent of Orne d'Ecouché to the sea, with cabotage from Ouistreham to Vierville if time allowed.
