Nany in Germaine and Jean Hausermann in Rosario

Vierville July 28, 1939Friday (EXTRACTS)

...The Belle Isle finally arrived in Bordeaux at noon Monday, allowing our travelers to take the Bordeaux-Ocean in the evening, we sent their boys to Lisieux by the 7h train, so they met a little earlier, and at 10 am we were picking them up in Bayeux. I spent the emotion of seeing them again, I found them in excellent health and Simone black as a moricaude (so much that yesterday she was without stockings while I thought she was pavementd down " milk chocolate ), Yves very grown but very thin, Jean very fit and almost chattering, I had conversations with him on your account that made me the greatest pleasure and joy my heart as a mother......

This conversation with Jean continued in the vegetable garden where a large and warm sun was waving around the groves for the gathering of the clusters whose jams we will make today: do you see this here? Active hands, mouths too because it is tempting! and old Nany who decided to win her invalids, Well seated, as well as Jean C. on our beautiful edges of solid box at the post. With Simon it does not happen an hour without us talking about all my darlings together. J-en now know things about you!!On your installation, more than charming, it seems, it is just if I would not place your furniture; and it seems to me that all this is agreed (irresible?) for you, for the little ones who have enough to beat in a well-mannered and airy neighborhood. As it seems to me better than the large barracks of l'avenida Pellegrini to the acariate owner, and to the house of Mendoza street cashed in a world of houses and without anything pretty......

..... naturally a letter of "noise-can" (someone at Hersent but who?) Jean was waiting here to ask him to be in Paris this morning. Jean left yesterday and had to arrive at 8 pm (he went down to his mother's house who arrived on Wednesday, very happy, too...)
Simon will tell you that Belle Isle had the tail of a bad wind before arriving in Bordeaux, and that she had the sea sickness to do her trunks (Camber trunks). Before taking the train, they wanted to see Grattequina again and as a result came with a large cage of splendid artichokes. This happens well, mine suffered terribly from winter, in opposite proportion of pear trees....

.....The childhood comrade (Yves) I'm sorry, both of you. (Jean-Paul and Jean-Louis) I'm not going to stretch out on our American trip. Simon will tell you that they found in Casa l'oncle Emile. (Hausermann) And the aunt on the arrival of the boat that took place quite late and left in the night. Awesome reception, but all the Feuillesbois and Aunt Alice who now live in Casa had abstained, so much the better! (Breakfast) , Mauritius (Breakfast) He is married and almost a father; but when Sim informed himself if he was married kindly, he was answered fairly vaguely and even without any training.

…………Our boys build a new canoe with great skill and care, from which they bought the plans in Paris. The yard is set up near the pigeon-house and I am with interest the walk of their work. It can be said that they are taken by themselves, doing the wooden orders themselves, helping out the mechanical saws of our carpenters in the village, delighted themselves to participate in the execution. Since yesterday Jeanne's laundry machine contains water that boils with big broths and where we must be able to use it more easily, so we have built an open-air fireplace, which Michel was feeding throughout the day; they were there yesterday at 9:1/2. The light wooden hull whose frame(?) will disappear when it is time will be covered with a strong canvas that we dream of painting in black, to make more original with red and white nets under the edge dish(?) All this provided with the participation of the purse of each of the boys, without any of the parents, nor even Nany!!! Jean C. who naturally inspected the works and expressed his satisfaction; more even, almost his admiration for their know-how. Jean-Pierre and François are the two leaders of the affair and certainly also the most apt ones, and it is so active that we hardly take the time to make the daily dip at the beach and a small canoe ride!

(I think François remembers many interesting details, the origins of the project, theera order cancelled, carpenter selected, interest in having a left-hand man on the team, role of Brigitte, etc.)

I don't know if I told you that in the car. (a Peugeot 402) of l`oncle Georges on (boys) had slipped a lot of things that he was a little surprised at the unpacking on arrival; for all corners and corners, florets, masks and plastrons, football, regulatory weights to throw him, dumbbells, snowshoes, but tennis is rather wrong, it's another generation's sport, those that these guys like to practice are more violent.

The 2 cadets are good friends, Gillonne. (Collars) Come on, man, you're gonna get a big deal. (Collars) There is in her pigeonhole that she is trying to make more comfortable, the poor girl, but still missing... essential; we often see herself, she is very thin. (Collars) stayed in Orsay with his father, he was abhorrent with his mother last year. (Collars) He made his first flights, we will see him in August. He did all the classes in Angers where he was received in October, and the great need that we have for new pilots has reduced by more than 6 months the usual training that is done in several centers, instead of only d ́Istres, and which is continuously inspected by General Commander Istres.

We're actively preparing to hold on, and that's probably why our eastern neighbours are (Germans) Seems more assailed (whispering) The paid leave of the factories working for armament was reduced until October, and this decision was accepted without recrimination by the workers. The government still has the hard hand and just requisitioned some dockers from Bordeaux and Algiers who threatened to strike. So they accepted the immediate resumption of work, bravo!

...it's nothing near a daughter of André de la Heudrie who is no less than 1m95. Let's hope our daughter won't get to this, although she's great for her age. Simon found herself well changed, melted, finer.

Big tides these days, we propose to go on an expedition to Gefoss – remember, Maine? - to make provision for shrimp and hulls. The first ones have followed the price of life, and are no less worth here than 15F the book, there is hardly any for the content of a box of peas!! We are very spoiled with cakes and d'etrilles, old Jean! I don't eat one time without thinking about the pleasure you would have done so, and Simon s'en rote... the fingers; that's the case. The whole house is of the same opinion apart from Jean C. And Yves would like to do as his father did if... his mother would allow him! Funny little man, good boy, but so different from the two of you I love all the way and affection.
Seeing my parish priest, with whom I had a little explanation about the casual from which he claims to receive nothing from his parishioners. He seemed rather embarrassed, m-- he came out of a thousand confused reasons, to tell me that it could not be said about us. Indeed! But why did he put forward what he said. I think he will not start again! It is said that he is looking for a house in Vire to withdraw there.

......I'm afraid Jean C. is in a narrow street in London in a rather dark old kitchen that we've just made for him!

PSWe saw yesterday very high, big British bombers, well aligned, it represents something that these aircraft, damn it! and Hitler enrage, kssskss.

......... Our Nany gradually regained her strength, she had been well shaken in the spring, but now she has more appetite, no longer suffers from her enterocolitis, and we started sera injections which Dr. Awaiting the greatest good, this to redo her blood. Her sting d-hier seems to have already given her strength, and yesterday she was doing a good walk in the garden, without fatigue....

All the little ones are beautiful, the boys are excited about the construction of a canoe of some 4m50 long, not bad made my faith. Bison has changed a lot, we found it in Lisieux with Fr and Mich, coming from Bordeaux. Good end of trip, after a short stopover in Lisbon, time to go to the convent San Jeronimo.ir Day, bad on the 2ndndSo much so that I had the sea sickness, the real, doing my trunks! What a shame! Arriving in Bordeaux by cold and rising from the pretty Gironde despite the bad weather. Customs clearance without bad, but opening the case like construction, with 1 screw of 15cm every 5cm! We were the last at customs! Afternoon we were seeing Grattequina, with great pleasure, it was beautiful and the good people there charged us with a parcel of beautiful artichokes, one more.

......the children don't go to England, it doesn't work out there, it will be for next year.

......... I see you had a beautiful July 14th. We too on board because the Commander is very patriotic, great pavois, Marseillaise, fireworks, champagne, everything was there.........

Vierville, 4 August 1939(EXTRACTS)

.........I am in possession of the 2 small notebooks that arrived in a trunk that Tia Mone had shipped in Bordeaux, I also don't forget the notes and 2 small tubes necessary to assemble your precious bath heater that I will naturally have only a lot later, because it is with the furniture of the Cordelle, who wait for a sign to go to Paris. But it takes for this to find the apartment. Simon has to go to Paris with Jean around August 20 to get in search of a home, I have the idea that she will find it quite quickly, because it does not fail; admitting that it will be late, she will be able to enjoy my home, which would make it easier for me to return to Paris only when they are home.
Last Saturday Georges made us surprise to come spend the weekend and therefore brought back (Jean Cordelle who was in Paris) The 2 brothers-in-law came to me, even claiming that Jean was chatter! He is definitely more likely than I knew him. He spoke to me at length about his conversations with Gilbert, and he learned that your compliments had been increased. I am very happy for you....The 11 pious men of last week were very admired, and they considered it a summum, they will see in today's mail that you have done even better! All my compliments, my dear son, is an intense satisfaction for your old mother to see you succeed. 1800 pesos a month! Do you know that it's a sum, and Jean Cordelle hopes you will be rewarded by 4% on the end-of-year profits. That's enough to fill the burgundy for the bad days, and they will come, don't doubt it! But when you are armed with ringing species, you are stronger to resist it, the future seems less dark and it must I know that Maine is reasonable, but I also know that you are less (I have it from Dad! – it's a song) and God knows if I had to fight a lot so that he wouldn't do madness... and what would I have done after your dear Father's death if I hadn't had enough to live, as I know myself, I would have been terribly hurt to be forced to address me to others...

...I saw my parish priest, well aged – like me! – and we had a conversation that touched closely on what I already told you. I was what I had to be about a priest, and not one of my words did not disrespect, but it seemed rather embarrassed, when I repeated to him what he had said to Dubois, and that he had allowed me to say again. He confused his explanations, mixing the turrets of Mrs. de Bughas with ours, Jacqueline's marriage (ten years ago), etc., and he ended up telling me that I was not one of her parishioners... "In this case, Mr. the Curé, I am therefore relieved of the charges that fall on those ones." Then it would have been necessary to see him...and hear him. I pointed out that my duty was to participate in his interview, but that I did not wanted not that one might think in the village that We Missing. He simply broke up, we left ourselves good friends, and as your sisters were returning him he said "I will not say anything to Dubois, useless to stir this" ... and for cause. The noise is running in the village that he is recalled to Bayeux, I would not be surprised. Pommier who is very aware of the ecclesiastical things, m- said that in our oldest of Treviers, three priests had to be changed as insufficient, including our parish priest.

…The boys finished the carcass of their boat, which according to authorized people, is pretty good. They are this morning in Bayeux to buy the canvas that must cover it, they struggle in expenses that they did not suppose so strong, it is the quarter hour of Rabelais and they want to let them paddling a little bit.
Grand costume ball tonight at Piprel's, we came to claim our boys, and the mothers went to search the many trunks which contain treasures:; Phil as an annamite fisherman, JPO as a gourmand, Fr in a gaucho, Mich in Sudanese chief. It was easy to find accessories, jewelry, weapons, the whole is not trivial because there are pretty burnoes, gandourahs, etc. They are delighted...

...Jean Cordelle has to go to Renault and Citroën today to find his car; but he finds Georges' car very practical. He will arrive at the 13th of August to celebrate his daughter's 13th birthday...

....Ms Cordelle, always easy to live, sends you her affection, she will leave for Coutainville, where all the Dupuis, Bidel, are located. Yvonne will find her there for a decade with her husband, of course there is hope for February, she is delighted and for cause.
The time so wretched has moved away from us, without I regret it for my part, the Parisians, paid holidays, often undesirable, from the rest. Most of the large factories that are working at full yield for the National Defence, have ordered the government to be confined the holidays of their workers until October. We are far from the flatteries of the Popular Front......many small industries do gold business, and I understand our great treasurer who will put a stop to exaggerated profits...
...I said that Chalon was very kind to Jean Cordelle and should invite him to lunch with Georges. I felt that he was trying to create a group of - I'm not a friend. …

...Every night the two elders plunged their forehead into their hands to play chess. We also approached bridge, they found eminent and complacent teachers in the person of Jean and Simone.......I spoke to our Simon about Mich's desire to prepare Navale, so that she would speak about it to John, and avoid an explosion, but it seems to me that everything will go according to Mich's wishes, except his intention stopped to enter in October in fleet class, the idea of making him do before a class of hypotaupe has a thousand advantages for the continuation, and this would give him one year of reflection ...

Vierville 11 August 1939(EXTRACTS)

... . .Here it is all right, but I have transplanted a fever that has tired me. Dr. Lehoux in full access wanted to make a blood test which was immediately carried to Caen by Jean C. Despite the late 7 o'clock at night, we are waiting for the result. Lehoux is sceptical about this paludian awakening after 20 years of stagnation; the Dean of the faculty in Paris had nevertheless predicted me. In short I no longer suffer from d-enterocoliitis, the heart is less "excited", I breathe as at 20 years, the liver is perfectly at peace, so? That's why we're going to put the nose in, I am for this method.

...We are waiting for George tomorrow for dinner and we will celebrate together on Sunday the 13th anniversary of the girl who is today. Boys finish their boat, they lack some ingredient to make the inside more waterproof. Georges must bring it to them. A shot of painting and it will be finished. I proposed a sensational baptism that was accepted with enthusiasm.

...The Finochi have arrived, Gerald Collières will have a permission and our boys have met at their ball last week with young people on the beach, the Petels – he is an industrialist, and there is a good bandeminine and men of their age. We bathed together this week, we play basketball and we shoot with sword because many of these young people prepare the great schools. The bourgeois family, well thinking. The ball of last week was very successful, our boys were unrecognizable, being severely grimmed. Michel was blackened, with his arms and legs, dressed as an African chef, Jean-Pierre ocre and disguised as a gourmand, François in Gaucho had everything silver, ocre, his legs on the side of the figure and a small mustache; Philippe in Chinese, ocre and the falling mustaches. They were not recognized at the entrance and the organizers had to ask their name, because they only allowed people to enter. Small supper around 1 am, in the sweet prices, they were delighted. We talked about playing a comedy piece at the Petels, and the Finochi received tomorrow. It's great life!

The two Franciscans came to ask me for hospitality and we treated them, they deserve it. I also had 2 small clarisses d'Alençon who were waiting to repair their church last week.

We're in Trevières for an agricultural contest, I had of course the visit of the organizers, and also those of a kermesse in Englesqueville for the repair of the church. All this is a bit much and I really want to go knock at the door of all these people for our canteen. Our fulmin priest, a little with reason.

Had Mad's good visit with Louis... and Annette! returned to the bercail. She had a good loss, as for Louis, it was the sadness itself, he was with his four little, beautiful children, without mother! We can imagine what the thoughts of the father must be! My poor friend Godard has more than once wept near me; her husband is no worse, that's all that one can say about it; Annette has lost much weight, but she always has a beautiful toothache. She is in Littry until October, so I guess she has said goodbye to a life next door, but what a pity this little girl has turned so badly. She kissed me with good heart, that poor kid. They all took a thousand loving memories to your place.

Visiting my old Dr. Brée, he's just like me, he's not getting any younger.

.....Georges has bought a grill from a demolition merchant, it is in excellent condition and will favorably replace the one you know on the side of the stables, which is a real lace? Cost 575F + the port.

I don't know if I told you that the Hersents are presenting the project of Mers el Kebir next Saturday. Georges worked a lot with Chalon and took the opportunity to tell him how much the staff were worried about the lack of work. Chalon replied that in the office of some people he didn't want to take any responsibility, that he was sorry and did everything he could to shake this apathy, without much success. He seems very kind to Georges that he invited to come to his own office for lunch at his drawing table. At Schneider where there was a lot of d-X and where it was quite distant, he presented Georges in such a way that everyone changed their face.

My boys put on a red Bordeaux wine barrel on Monday, in bottles; it will be the turn next week of a 1⁄2 barrel of white wine from Gers (1934) the same one you tasted with Dubois, and that I am guaranteed to age. It is drier than the white Bordeaux still a little sweet. What do you say, Jean?

Mrs Cordelle leaves us next Tuesday16. She will spend ten days at the hotel near her sister and her mothers in Coutainville. Jean and Simone are talking about going to Paris to spend 4 or 5 days trying to find an apartment, their furniture, released, waiting for them in the storage room in Paris.

I hope you have received our letters, were they probably delayed by the compulsory stopover that we demand from Air France in the Canary Islands if they want to keep the privilege that had been granted to them before....

Vierville, 11 August 1939 (EXTRACTS)

I'm putting a little word to tell you about our Nany, who has had a small malaria fever attack these days, but Dr. Doubts himself whether it really is, or for example Malta fever, which is very common in France now, which gives access like malaria, and anemia a lot the patient. So we took advantage of this access to take a blood test, (which it must be done at the time of access). Jean was to Caen carry this out, and we are waiting for the result. Dr. Doubts had several tests done at the same time and he expects a lot to direct his care. Malta fever is cured by one And so we know better to treat our Nany, I'm sure. She was much better these days, taking back strength, she even had been in the garden, she eats well, and almost with appetite, which is very good. Unfortunately we have such a bad weather, rain every day, which does not allow her many stations in the garden.

Time is fast here, we wait for Georges tomorrow for his month off, Thursday we drive Motheren auto to Coutainville and see so the whole family of Jean. And on Monday 21 we both leave for Paris looking for a cottage, a car (almost chosen), a college for Yves, etc. Our furniture is cleared, without any trouble, and waiting in a depot
………….

Vierville August 25, 1939Friday(EXTRACTS)

.... . .Here it goes, but we have been back in the anguish of last year, at the moment when you were gone to Reims with the two little ones, to my great concern! For all of us personally the situation is less distressing, because we form bloc. . . . But this said, our French hearts are vibrating intensely. The camouflage that the USSR has just made our diplomats and military parties to hear in Moscow where it has been discussed for months, while Ribentropp has just signed in 6 hours in the house next door, the pact of non-aggression with the Boches to everything in question. We take the serious steps that the situation entails. Our permissionaries, who came for the harvest, have repressed their belts, Georges (Leon and Jeanne's son) who was driving and kicking was alerted in the penultimate night by the gendarmes and Georges Chedal took him to Bayeux by car to join Maubeuge. 2 classes of reservists are recalled, I know who have little children, and I do not need to tell you the grief that these separations involve. How much I regret my past activity which would have allowed me to sit next to these mothers or women saddened! Let's pray! But may we still have the immense joy that brought us last year's journey from Munich? Is it possible that a new miracle will happen? And how can one have faith in the signature of a Hitler or a Mussolini? I think very little Maine to all yours...

... The Cordelles left for Paris this past Monday by their own means, that is to say in their beautiful Peugeot – the exact same as you had this winter, that they were lucky enough to find themselves ready to serve them. I wonder if it was time to buy this; at the 1stera and the brave Pepita, fortunately we will remain for the ...urgent races (because the essence!...), my bourrin will follow to the 1st.ir The Cordelles also went to Paris for an apartment. They had gone down to my house; they saw lots of them, that's not what is missing and ended up finding a very convenient one in the nearby house, unfortunately it only has 5 rooms which is a little short. The hope of extending one room on the same floor apartment had to be abandoned, despite the good will of Father Raguet who would be delighted with these new tenants. What still seduced the Cordelles are these bright and sunny bedrooms; The charming reception rooms and the others are on the courts. It's not stopped yet, but Raguet promised not to rent without warning. This is a solution that would smile at me. Meanwhile, by TSF, the Government informs the Parisians that additional trains are available to leave Paris and that they are advised to do so if they are not useful. The small hotels here have emptied themselves at once, some are returning to their home, others to go and get something to nipper for the coming winter.

The Finochi suddenly left, he had to organize the factories to make for the army, and his family will settle in Mantes where they have the resources of a farm that belongs to them. We saw them a few days ago; I had gathered the happy band to taste, they are well given. But already the boys had to join the holiday courses in Paris to obtain the diplomas. It had been a general disaster in the villas of the beach, from which I am very happy to have pulled our boys.

Gerald Collières came to spend a few days here, he seemed very happy and he was old too. A little skinny, very tanned, but very happy with his job that he takes to heart.

The people who want to be satisfied with the arrival of a big boy (Benjamin)I was happy with them; only Colette is in a clinic in Paris, and I wonder what will happen if there is a general mobilization. Gaby would go to Toulon. On all sides the worries swayed. On the day of the departure of Gérald I sent for his little mother very brave but wet eyes, and we were talking by taking tea when Maine Papar arrived. Brave girl, but how tiring with her little cancans (they are naturally without servants) and neighborhood. She did not stop causing... when she left, I had to get to bed, I couldn't get any more...

.........Georges Chedal uses his leisure to arrange many things here; he, at my request, made disappear the hangings of the office, archeed by moths and for cause; the couch put in the middle of the panel opposite the fireplace has cleared the door, it lightens and enlarges the room. It was necessary to change some arrangements of furniture, paintings, weapons, but only on this side, also a small photo will bring you to the notice of changes that have occurred.
The garden is superb....how do we admit that despite all the beauty of this nature, mad men are working to disturb hearts and souls, we are wondering where God's righteousness is. Meanwhile our Phil continues to work geometry and algebra for the October exam. It must be admitted that to do it quietly it takes some courage, because this brave little one is the 1st.ir I'm gonna go with our boys and get out of here.

Jean Cordelle returns with a uniform which he had fortunately ordered from his last trip to Paris, Simon writes that at the Belle Jardinière they were overcrowded, many reserve officers have already left. Gilbert Hersent invited them to lunch yesterday, but he expected to be moped from hour to hour. The Post Office here is under military authority, no phone call or dispatch without censorship; Our mayor as a brave man, he fills all the precautions of use, it is not he who will desert his place as of Pierres, whose flight to Switzerland during the war, while he was mayor of Louvières was blamed as it should. These braves of Pierres are not completely French.

And finally I'll talk to you about my health without that, my Jean would make the big eyes: naturally I'm doing a series of injections... huge and I'm taking a light bulb of spleen, liver and tutti quaanti; add my meat juice (1/2 bowl of beef blood) and some other impedimenta and you'll see that I'm not staying without drugs. In short, it's been a lot easier for me, for a few days now I feel stronger, it seems to me that Roses I've grown fatter than I've ever seen.

7am evening---I finish my letter after the good arrival of the Jean Cordelle, delighted with their acquisition (new Peugeot 402B) ... John Tsus wrote yesterday, Jean, there is nothing new in the office, Richard alone was recalled, from Seroux went to the White, probably with the magot. Colette Dessus was evacuated yesterday by ambulance to the vicinity of Paris, she has a threat of appendicitis, the poor girl, the baby is superb, her name: Benjamin! (this name had surprised at the time)

.....For Bizerte, Sagne left to anticipate the immediate, it would be Davot who would succeed Bertard. He found himself indisposed to Sfax, sat on a chair and died suddenly....

PSParis is quiet and so are we.
