Nany in Germaine and Jean Hausermann in Rosario

Vierville23 June 1939Friday(EXTRACTS)

I suppose you're busy leaving your big, darling children, perhaps even ready to go to Buenos Aires for the last farewell; I know it will be a great grief for all of you...... What makes one of us happy is a return that fills me with joy, not so much for me as for the two great boys who are going to find a family, a real one!

……….
.........I arrived here Saturday night with your elders and our daughter, after a charming trip in the middle of an almost green countryside: 4h1/2 d'auto without a hook, while on the way back they had a little dynamo boredom that could have made them spend the night outside, if they had the chance to be 2 minutes away from a garage. I decided it was ideal to travel this way, I appreciate it very much......... At 7h1/2 we were at home, where dinner was waiting for us, simmered by the brave Jeanne, and at 9h we slept like happy until the next morning.

......I found the garden well held, the gravel restored, the beds with their cuttings. But all this was lacking water. The roses were only better....It was necessary to cut everything that climbed on the walls, fortunately the discards are vigorous and already high; my poor hedge of troenes is making a sad mine. "It reprints", as Leon says, but with how slow! and it is not noticed more than the black trognins of the big branches elongated. My balls are sick, there are 2 that look like a handful of hay, but there are always masses of fruit and the apple tree Hausermann has 1⁄2 apples that will become red and ripe in August....

.......there is a lot of hay, and it has been cut (by Dubois with his mower) since the day before yesterday. Naturally, the heavenly cataracts have gone off and my poor hay is making a bad face on the ground; to this woe is good for my potatoes which could no longer thirst; our poor Kazan has made the soul here without suffering, and I have retained a young German dog with a new litter and which we will raise here; I renounce to bring myself a breed dog which my brave people would misunderstand.

The horse is superb, it has been rounded and its hair shines; Leterrier whom I saw yesterday mir day to mount a hussard officer. It's his duty....

... I see that you will be kept in Rosario until further notice, I will do what is necessary at the town hall of Verdon tomorrow.

Today I will write to Simon in Rio de Janeiro. The 2 sons will know tomorrow if they are eligible for the philo baccalaureate. I have very good hope. Jean-Pierre has finally passed a pretty good written for Centrale.... (oral) It would only pass it around August 18, because of the letter drawn, but we must know the result of written around July 14......... Phil works with courage and thus has clearly gone back to his average.......He must take an exam for the school around July 5 or 6. The Mich will not be leaving his MathElem before July 12 or 13. Here, that is, around the 2, Suzon will bring JP, François and the girl, eager to meet up here where they will be better than in Paris.

Georges who was keen to go camping 8 days in Savoie with his sons at the beginning of his holidays in July, seems less excited. He has to complete the equipment of his boys and even his. It is for the least 1500 to 2000F, then actually the two boys plan this trip with less joy than when we planned to do it with the necks (Custors) The young people with the young and the old at home. Suzon I said nicely to Georges who sometimes forgets his 52 years. I remained skeptical about his satisfaction to lie 8 to 10 nights on a canvas from the ground! but shuffled! all this between us; I regret for him who loves the mountain so much that he cannot miss the pleasure of some climbs at least once a year. Suzon does not taste this excessive game.

Nothing new here, I saw my mayor, and the teacher whom I maintained from the school year's tasting, then Leterrier who accepted the 500F increase that I proposed to him. With the increases of the Dubois and Blin leases, I will receive 2000F more per year. J-en will need to pay the taxes that Fr. Reynaud is responsible for and for. It must be recognized that the momentum given to the nation is bearing its fruit, and that in good sheep of Panurge, the worker gente honors the Popu Front! At L-Arsenal in Cherbourg, Martha tells me that his brothers work 10 to 11 hours a day. The dock is filled with torpedoes, counter-torpedoes coming out of the arsenal, also submarines, and our friends the English are anchored by 1⁄2 dozen units in the Arsenal itself. Come on! It gives confidence! Jean-Pierre went to Le Havre to spend Monday with the Merchants who went there in car. He came back excited about what he had seen from our navy that was wet there, and more sorry than ever to be able to be in it. In this regard, you know that Mich the gentle stubborn made himself registered to Janson in the Navy class for next October. He went to the Ministry of the Navy alone to pass the physical examination and his eyes. He has everything he needs to succeed, Mrs Cordelle left it without warning, without telling her son; I would not have done it, and warned him by asking what Jean C would say? I know that since then she had John written by Gabriel....It seems difficult to me before a vocation so clearly expressed by Mich to oppose it, and, good in math as it is (he is the 1st.ir He's able to make it next year, and go to Brest at the age of 17! That's right, the hick!

...we are preparing, George said, a new office on the street of London, is it for Jean C. ? J-d would have liked him to avoid this petal, but probably he will take special care of what is your business; and of which Challon seems quite well informed. He is the only one who is now attending the Council, Bénézeth n-y goes more. There are 2 or 3 in there that should be withdrawn, but they cling like lice, which does not bring much vitality to the office. We are always in: nevertheless, yes ! but ! etc. Young people, for God, young people !........

Vierville Friday, July 7, 1939(EXTRACTS)

........I understand what the departure of our travelers may have been painful for all of you...

...and your good letter, I received one from Simon, of whom I am not speaking, because you know everything she has told me for a long time. She was talking about your separation that she feels very much! As for Jean C., I believe that her feelings are very But I don't understand them; Mrs Cordelle is a little like that, in what affects all these personal things, but she externalizes much more affectionately than her son, which I knew of Jean's father's leaving a completely different impression than that of her son. Our great Francis is very communicative, Michel is more secret, but attentive; you already know that the poor kid was refused to the 1⁄2-in-Hist. Nat. He was still chammailed with the teacher who, nervous, finally told him "Get me out of the way, I'll put you 1/2". He will start again in October and will have more time than France ( François ??) Last year, he was very happy with math and physics, but he could not say anything about the compo de philo that was dealing with a passage on Machiavel's war!!!We will only know the result of the writing Monday, I think that the oral will follow closely and my Mich will arrive victorious on 12 or 13. ( François ??) freed, but who has taken the courses so far, arrives on Monday, and the rest of Avenue de Lamballe on Friday or Saturday; it will depend on Georges who will have to report to the office of his mission, a quasi-secret mission, of interest to National Defence, and of which the interested person speaks little, as he should.

He gave a long time with the Hersent, the Schneider, Challon, before he left for Oran on Tuesday. He was a little sorry to leave France and his family at such a time. We have indeed gone through a few days of heavy anguish, but it seems that the firm attitude of our government and the English who made Germany's ambassador in Paris, through our Foreign Minister Georges Bonnet, calmed down a little lard about Poland. Daladier, without delay closed the Chambers by warning them that their vacation might last a short time, that the situation was serious, and he reminded Gamelin who had just left in Corsica, given the prefects all the powers of wartime, finally put us in a state of alert, while Chamberlain and the English Communes approved it always declaring themselves ready to discuss in order to arrange things and avoid war. It seems that the immediate danger has passed... but for how long? This Hitler is a puzzle following when blowing up the big Mussolini who thinks he is a great man. It must be acknowledged that the era of speeches is a little calmed, it is not an evil, they abused it and finally recognized it. But I had the happy surprise at the TSF to hear that from now on our state posts would give news also in German. It was long ago that this should be done.
Meanwhile the good Phil is on the saddle until 13th, including Sunday, to try the examination of TPs....

Your uncle Emile had lived for a decade in the field of geometering that he had learned at Agro (after we left Bizerte and his failure to do so by Sidi Tabet) ( ??) where he ate a lot of your father's money), so well that his first savings allowed him to buy a herd of sheep, the origin of his current farm facility dates from there.

...JP and the Bison have, according to their father's decision, continued the courses at their respective high schools.nd successful.

...Nothing new here, my dear children, I am so well between the old house, the wood, the park and the vegetable garden, that I only get out to go to the cemetery or the church. ...The Parisians hardly appear and it is so much better. It was a lot of fun and we had trouble getting our hay back: 700 boots, it's not much, I have to complete this with the purchase that much and the hay is not given this year, but the maté is there for a blow and our brave Muscadet must not die. I have to tell my little ones that he's responding very well to his name, and he seems to me to have grown up, but maybe I'm the one who's rapted.ssi The garden gate is laid, it's very successful, the painters have put down the paper of the Bise room and painted the windows; the minium has been passed to the gate gates, before repainting them, the doors will be reverented inside and outside, and the vestibule damaged by moisture will see its painting mounded.(??)Renovated. This year, I give up the painting of the stairs and that of the little dining room that needs it, as well as my bathroom; However, it would have been nice to welcome your beautiful bath heater which will be so pleasant to get hot water in the bathtub. In this regard, the repair of my large furnace was very well done, and hot water is circulating, but here for 1100 F. Emely the mason lays white tiles along part of the walls of the office. I bought a small device to decelcairize water in a perfect way, and also another one to make yogurt, simple and so clean. All this undoubtedly contributed to improving in a remarkable way my relations with my sacred intestine, which no longer makes me suffer at all. This allows me to enjoy – with caution – excellent struts of which it is the season, and mussels that will delight my Toulonnaise and her elder. We will only speak of Pinal for memory....

I received advice from our friends in Lyon that the maté had arrived, and I sent it immediately to Flondrois but by registered letter! He replied immediately thanking you, he told me that "he was forbidden to continue to mate." Do I have to conclude that the Jubilee was concluded? As I said in this letter of dispatch that he should buy with this a small car of the month, a driver, and leave for Stang ar Lin. He replied that he will only leave when he can walk... what an illusion! He sold his big car, as always bad as for these expensive cars, and here are the conditions that a driver makes him take him there: 2F of the km (there are 1300), 150F of food per day. It is obviously given, but he has everything to pay for even this fantasy at that price.

In this regard, I wonder why the Port of Rosario is falling at such a speed, it was yesterday at 4400F. I told Suzon to see what we were going to get. I don't understand what L-Financial information means about the obligations that the Company asked for permission to issue on occasion.

I hope you get your papers, Maine must have had a good time documenting herself in Marie-Claire on her cousin Claudette Colbert. (a cinematic actress of the time) I think her mother smiles at Mrs. Saillard, is that an idea?

I sent you the birth certificates of Jean-Paul by registered letter.

A letter from Mrs Cordelle this morning tells me that she went to the General Office of Chargers. (the "Belle Isle" sailing company, which is taking the Cordelle de Buenos Aires to Bordeaux at this time), The Belle Isle is already 3 days late, we can only be insured from the day of arrival after the Lisbon stopover. No hurry the Belle Isle! We will send the 2 boys in front of their parents in Lisieux, they will have lunch together, and will arrive in Bayeux at 1 pm.

...I'll write again to Thibaut tomorrow so he can press his businessman about me, I'll wait for two or three weeks, and then put this in the hands of Pommier, I don't want to wait for this money so miraculously recovered to be dispersed again.

I saw the teacher (who remembers you) and we agreed on cakes that will provide the day's prize - 60 children - a good croissant filled with chocolate to each, a match and a cream cone. Syrup at discretion, and I regret that my little ones are not there to serve the comrades.

In the meantime I finished painting the 7 garden chairs and the 2 tables. It is a matter of painstaking, also like Daladier, I decreed: Art 1 - From 65 years old, we will not paint the garden armchairs. Art II - neither the tables.Art III - nor the benches.Teach! Not counting all the sewing, a huge laundry, a foot-cover to cover, blankets to be lined. We do not end up in this large house, add to that the palabres with all the suppliers or the workers we tear off. It seems that it is living! I dream only of rest and long chair. If you were there, Jean, with what joy I'll pass you the scepter

Vierville Friday, July 14, 1939(EXTRACTS)--I don't read again --

...My François came victorious on Monday, eager to find himself in the old house and in the good air, and I learned last night, with the pleasure you imagine, the complete success of Mich at his baccalaureate of Math Elem where he was received with honor.

...The three boys who stayed in Paris decided, and how I understand them! to attend this morning's magazine which must be after the preparations that one makes a well-French demonstration, to the honor of the army; legionnaires, mathurins arrived from Oran, Lorient, the English also sent their Horse Guards and Scotch Men with their beautiful hair hats, there will also be English sailors. All these troops and many of ours... were wildly acclaimed on their way to their barracks. All Paris rutile flags, and the great Georges arrived last night in car with Bison and the maid, decorated with their buttonholes with splendid tricolored cocards. We have the impression that it is an immense impulse to our dear France and I think it will make us think Our friends Is more willing to bow to strength than to diplomatic subtleties. 30.000 men march on Avenue des Champs Elysées while I write to you, and François set up the post near my bed where I am writing as usual, it is 10 a.m., I hear the great cheers of the crowd that greets our troops, at this moment they are the legionnaires....The three big cousins are with l'ami Marchand posted since 5 a.m. on the Av. Ch. El., it took this to try to see something and that's why Georges and especially Suzon have retreated before such a expectation.

... live France! (The big flag was put at the window of the 2nd)

Nothing new about me, the week passed in total peace; I did not miss the beach, and in the shelter of the parasol, enjoy the beauty of our garden....

.........and I hear that the passage of the 32nd I'm glad to hear that the spectators have a real voice and they'll be thirsty, so it'll excuse many of them.

There was apparently a popular ball held last night from 9am to 11am, our boys were planning to go round in circles; O youth! 10 Firefighters and their music – a bugger that sounds fake! Lesions m-a told me that G. (probably his son Georges Victoire?) He said a magazine was beautiful and it didn't look like us at all. ture I don't think so.

……….(Suzon) Seen our Aunt who I regret not having here... she's amazing, she's going to spend a month in Nivernais with her daughter and Micheline who just got received at the 1st.ir baccalaureate with mention – she is very – intelligent, and must be at this time with father and mother in Spain and Portugal.

6 hours. And I hurry, my dear children, I have come to write to Simon in a hurry; I was disturbed by a loooongue visiting the Laterriers who were bringing me a box of delicious dredged from their little girl's baptism, I assure you that they put the little dishes in the big ones, that you are there to taste it!...

Vierville Friday, July 21, 1939(EXTRACTS)

....from Friday 14th to the evening, the boys joined the bercail, excited by what they had seen in Paris in the morning and at 3⁄4 aphones to have Screaming Phil even said he would not go back to seeing a magazine because it could never be so beautiful.... 5h1/2 in the morning in Avenue des Ch. El.nd The rank of the spectators, that is to say, the crowd that was to be rushed around 10am at the time of the parade....the motorized army was such a power and such a weight that the asphalt of the avenue was flying in bursts, it is to be redone; while our airmen – including the dear Yo – were marching in tight rows up in the blue sky.... I told you, I believe, that I had hung the great pavois here. From the front I was dispensed, but really it is the time of great union to face ‘Germany, and I am very happy with what you tell me about the French meeting in Rosario!During this time, slowly, very slowly, too slowly, the Belle-Isle is moving towards us.......At this pace I do not think we will see our good people arrive before the 25 or 26 here. We must not be in a hurry...Ms. Cordelle arrives on Monday.

...Georges left for Paris on Sunday, he doesn't know when he can take his vacation, but he came back very satisfied with his mission, he was admirably received by the state-Major Schneider who works in Oran, he was given a young intelligent TP and he was able to do good work. Challon on his return to Paris he congratulated (it is certain that he seeks to be kind and to make himself a clan in the house, they do not talk to Benezeth!)

Suzon leads our boat and I let myself live; I saw Lehoux again, I was a little tired, he attributes it to anemia, but after a serious auscultation, he found me much better than last year. I believe him without pains, and it would not have been worth stinging in all directions and swallowing tons of drugs so as not to succeed at anything. As I am never happy I ask for roses, Lehoux said to take a stick of red and do this delicately, you see that! In short, jingurgite beef blood every day and every shot of hepatrol gives me the value of 250g of calf liver, universal panacea against anaemia. At this point I think that in 8 days I will look like a Norman, I will share it with you.

....The mackerel gooseberries have declined since 4 large whiting and a hake no less greedy for fruit ran the garden. There will be more for Yves, be quiet. It is this week that we make the jam of currants and the one of so precious blackcurrants for the "rollies", and the apples and pears grow in view of the nose, there are masses. Less plums and peaches than last year, on the other hand.

The annual repairs are complete, and it is still necessary to paint the barriers and the cement fence, which will be done shortly by Leon. The painter will come back to give a little blow to the greenhouse, and also to the verandas. This leads to ask you, my Jean, if you see anything else to put these terrible verandahs so little in harmony with the style of our old house. Besides, they still have to hold on for a few years, but when we replace them it would be no harm to find something else!

Little or no world at sea; hotels are not full, it is the crisis and their prices have not fallen. Piprel asks 50F + all the side and 10% of the servants; the brave Pignolet and Merlin 35F and 40F. This certainly does not worth it. It is true that life is very expensive here, for a corner like ours.
The de Pierres were not there, and the Jacques de Mons went to announce their sister's arrival. This one came a little leaner, a little more ...salalier than last year, courageous, still with only the 2 cadets: Gillonne and François-Bernard, Gérald may have 8 days of permission in August, and Patrice is in a box because he has done nothing of all winter. We will not see Collières....The house that you know has not changed its appearance, and it still masks them... the indispensable. It takes some guts to this brave Denise to hold on, because she does not get helped in anything.

Balles ( ??) and its half There, and you'd find old faces, my John, only a little more marked than before.

Pepta waxed, reworked, greased again, the youth went yesterday to Bayeux and walked (not the young, Pepita) like an angel. Jean-Pierre will take his driving license as well as his elder.

Muscadet is very alive, every day the boys ride him and say delighted, he has gained his food by doing more than one cart this week.

Perhaps I would go with him until Mt St-Pierre where the two young women arrived with the little ones, we wait for Michel Tenaille these days, back from Venezuela. Mme de la Heudrie slowly recovers from a nasal bleeding that she had 2 months ago. It was impossible to treat her in Trevières, we had to transport her to a clinic in Bayeux......Hypertension like this dear Mrs. Jean Hersent who is in Nacqueville, who thought she would take refuge there! It seems that there is peace with the good people who serve her, while in Chantilly-Gouvieux, she has the worst trouble with the valety she must have to hold her great house. Normans certainly have their faults, but they find a background of dedication, they are always the same here, Leon, Jeanne Colibeuf, Martha, and Marie-Louise. (Chedal's maid?)

Did I tell you that we had taken 800 This year, students in S-Cyr. It's huge but not surprising given the needs of our army.

........ Received a letter from Thibaut about my claim, he has finally received 60,000 francs but I am afraid that he does not touch much more, he makes me count what the businessmen have touched without talking about the tax, it is shameful, Georges is busy for me in Paris to follow this closely. It is not about seeing what remains pass away.

...Georges has lunch with Prévost this week (whispering) He spoke about it and his wife – this one very much in her place, we talk about sending him to Gabes for dredging, but he still asks to think about it if it is.
