Paris – Saturday, March 18, 1939(EXTRACTS)
....We had a few nice days of fresh weather, but we see Easter coming. I thought I'd leave next Sunday in Vierville, with your big ones taking us on a car. They have some merits! they will have to make the trip back and forth in the same day, Georges not being free Saturday, because recover (c) A few hours lost Last year It's almost not to believe.
Meanwhile, concerns are rekindling on the east side of the new coup d'Hitler in Czechoslovakia. (After Munich – Oct 38 - Hitler had annexed the Sudetes, in March 39 he ended by dismembering what remains of Czechoslovakia, creating the German protectorate of Bohemia-Moravia and the "free" state of Slovakia). The truly autonomous population is in the greatest despair; we have a weak but real example by Mr Raguet's maid – our owner – who is Czech and has received his new frightening ones, it is a new Alsace-Lorraine that is preparing and it is found that Boches' commitments are not worth the paper they sign. We prepare for the war by force, and Daladier yesterday demanded full powers so that he can decide what is right without resorting to the fantasy and indiscretion of the 600 or so mad people who sit in the room.
.......the Spanish affair seems to be over. It is desirable that this end and we be rid as soon as possible of these undesirable refugees who sow terror in the departments that have welcomed them. In Caen the inhabitants demanded their immediate departure, said Béquignon, who brought your superb atlas.. it is really very beautiful – I'm talking about l-atlas, not Béquignon - . It was very complacent, and it came back on the subway with your book under the arm, which weighs a crazy weight. It cannot therefore send you by post. G. tomorrow, I'll make you a well prepared package that I'll put to the mail and recommend.
Suzon went to Tio Mio yesterday. ....The evil is making great progress... Dr.Flondrois claims to a girl married to a comm. (communist?) And who would have come to see him, but he refused to receive... Needless to say that we seem to ignore all this, but it is regrettable that he does not accept the loving help of his own at this moment. It is equal these lives of singles have surprising sides....

Paris – Saturday, March 24, 1939(EXTRACTS)
....I have a daughter between tomorrow at the clinic to get her removed from the appendix...... I decided to stay here another week, despite the insistence of Suzon and Dr., but I know myself and also all the inventions that the madman of the house could have invented to torment me. Here I am looking for news that will be good we hope. She is operated street of health, and by Besset.
.....Foreign is well, and, like many, hopes that the war will move away...popur at least the moment and thanks to the energetic measures of our government. We will increase the number of career officers everywhere, it is time to enjoy the entrance to the X, St-Cyr and Navale.
... the beautiful atlas has gone into a small caisse... I see here the 2 John leaning on the cards... that it will have to complete shortly and for cause, what derision!
....Nothing but Hitler's politics and actions, we live the events feverishly and boycott German and Italian shops, these are particularly numerous in our neighbourhood. (Batifol) is also married to an Italian, unnaturalized, of course! Long live France!...

Paris – Friday, March 31, 1939(EXTRACTS)
...Tomorrow we leave for Vierville...
...I have a lot of demands (it knows me!) for the delay of my mail to Buenos Aires. There must be a gallant sheep on Singer Street (the major post of thend Judgment I have addressed the great boss himself who will certainly spare his search.
... My 4 boys look forward to rest, they didn't steal it, the quarter ends in an excellent way for all from the point of view of work, and on Monday they got the bronze medal that we know. I guess the named Muscadet will have to prove himself during the next 2 weeks. I am a little worried about the food of this animal. It is impossible to draw something precise in Leon's letters which meditates with difficulty and expresses badly, perhaps not without any intention on this subject that he feels thorny. So I need to go see what's going on. I'm also going to alert my good people who work for me in the summer, and have the garden fence that Mahier made with the wood that was to dry in the big stable. This will give the 4 boys the joy of going to help their friend Blin to forge the pens that are necessary for the mounting of the so-called gate. On Tuesday, we went in choir (the 4 sons Aymon told you) to assist and iron the canasson that needed it. I think I'll find the grid well scratched as you said yourself and we can do it in the month that follows.
.... I gave your letter to George, my Jean, he is delighted to be able to go book, because he knows lots of good places. He was very busy this week with the latest calculations for Mers el Kébir, whose project with Lefèvre and Desplats is presented. Georges seems to appreciate the seriousness of this house, so much better! but we seem to be deprived of the active and young staff at home!
You must have seen that the alarms to the East are less hot, but our government continues to take precautions without shouting it on the roofs, and I am unfortunately in your opinion - and many others - that it will be necessary to hit on these savages to finally have peace, so much desired by my Jean-Louis! I am having fun reading his reflections, it is our ray of sunshine that our children, they go towards the future without worries, fortunately!
.... I hardly advise you to send money through us at this time, task of buying gold coins, pounds, dollars, if you don't want to place them there. It seems that in Holland and Switzerland it is the papaya, all their gold flows to us, as they are afraid of an invasion by their eastern neighbours. I have known this by Georges with his golden bar and who will decide to sell it to the Bank of France, then to buy books and dollars. It is certain that at the first blow the embargo would be put on it and paid in good ... or bad notes.
...our week is very busy with our little operation. I am going to Paris early to pick up mother and daughter at the health care home.... The family trio will be joining us on Easter Eve, always in car. It's really practical this way of locomotion....What a difference with iron trimming and what results. For Martha and me, going back and forth is a 500F affair, it becomes prohibitive.
Saturday morning. We're going to go, it's beautiful, my boys are smiling, the little girl is fine....

ViervilleFriday, 7 March (Nany's mistake, it's April) 1939(EXTRACTS)
..... I got here at 4h1/2 on a car with Georges and the 4 boys. We had left at 12h1/2, the trip went through beautifully, and old Nany kept up so well that she went through the house again before dinner. We left Suzon so-called reassured on the little girl, in fact I had to hide that the temperature had risen to 39°5 thanks to an untimely purge, after a bit of forced feeding in the first days. Fortunately everything came back in order, but because Suzon was insurged and put his daughter in authority on the diet. She came back from Lamballe on Wednesday and I count on toda la familia tomorrow, in car, of course. I am very anxious to see them here in peace. Suzon herself enough on her nerves, it's not surprising, the races to the rue de la Santé are grim, you have to take at least 2 buses, and then make another piece of the way on foot. Of course this coincides quite badly with the project of Mers el Kebir, which Georges worked on and that, as usual we ended up trombling, because we were taken too late, G. Returning at undue hours, both for lunch and evening, too late to go to the health home with his car. With this he was in the middle of the brain terribly and the entrance of his daughter's room was forbidden.......G. is delighted to bring his world to spend 48 hours in the old house.
.... The joy of my great boys who enjoy their freedom so fully, they have abandoned the numbers with pleasure....
.....the frost did not make it very surprised with the damage in our water installation, and I had Dagubert for 3 days to close the leaks of lead pipes; they are laid so that absolute discharge is very difficult, not enough slope, of the unfortunate elbows. The evil is repaired, but my purse has trinquéed! And as to something bad is good, I found the way to light up the large furnace without having to run the engine; by filling only the overflow and closing some valves that isolate the boiler. As a result, it is very good everywhere. J-I found the property in good condition, we had worked hard in the garden....... The marquise of Pierres even brought before leaving Louvières a cargo of rhododendron cuttings.....
....Cannot find a way to buy straw or hay for the horse, so we will complete it with its barboted water and the little straw and hay that remains. All the cattle are there, fortunately the grass grows in the envi, and therefore the leases are increased. I have not yet signed the lease of Dubois, and the one of Leterrier will be changed at the end of June. I hope to enjoy it.
.....I received this morning a very courteous letter from a British Air Force Commodor, Mr. Champion of Crespigny de Vierville who would like to rent my old house for the summer (I pass in silence the shouts of boys at the announcement of this proposal) If I did not have my house, he apologized for asking me if I knew anything about him and his family. He would come to Vierville. All this in an excellent French. I will see around me; the Than mansion is filled with workers by its owner. It reminds me of our installation here! But it is not for rent. Perhaps Guillemette de Pierres would rent Louvières?

Vierville 14 April 1939Friday(EXTRACTS)
... It's a real satisfaction for me to be able even without the help of my cane, to go around the property and put my nose all over. At the bottom there was a serious need in many corners, boys claim that the slightest disorder is coming to my eyes and that it's... annoying! Okay, I had to be like them at their age!
....The good sun has brought out all the flowers from the wood, there is an infinite variety that you know well....The vegetable garden is changed into a wedding bouquet as the pear trees are covered with white flowers......For the moment it is a lovely spectacle and we walk with pleasure in the box alleys drawn for so long by our predecessors.... the damage caused by the frost, part of our fusans are very damaged as well as Lambert cypresses, dusty by the cold. "It reprints" as Leon says, but there are for many months before you see the bushes of such a beautiful dark green that they formed.
... the hay grows slowly, but with the measures taken, I hope that we will eventually clear the voids of the attic. The horse does not suffer since I added sound to his usual menu; our 4 boys surround them well! His dress has taken over the luster which he misses as soon as Leon, who is decidedly a meagre rider, is alone to maintain it. And every day he makes the joy of our "medalists" who give to heart joy on their mount.
Yesterday, thanks to them, we were able to get the wood of the apple trees slaughtered this winter at the Vignets, there is unfortunately a good provision....The brave Muscadet shot on the ring with strength, he really does me more service than Pompon who played the aristocrat.
Few people here, apart from the owners of some villas, the hotels are empty, the wallets too, and then the international situation gets complicated every day thanks to these Boches and Italians. They wanted to copy their model, they did a bad blow in Albania. I hope that it will devote them a little more every day to the public vindiction; but our government had to take all the necessary precautions. To tell the good public knows nothing precise, and it is better so, the newspapers are silent or about, but it feels like those who have to, work without noise. If one is forced to walk one day, and I am afraid that we will not be far away, we will not be caught in green. England also walks and all those small countries that surround the Rome-Berlin Axis, and would still make him a famous front to defend. Up to the Dutch placids who put the weapon in the fists towards the East.
....The good Suzon and Georges brought in the contents of my safe to the CIC. It will only be worth it when I return to Paris, not until about fifteen d'ici.
....J've received the reply from the Postmaster who told me that he wrote on Singer Street to ensure that strict supervision was made for the Air France mail.
...I'm delighted to see the police in Buenos Aires, on the Nazis and I hope the Boches from there will bear the mark.
... The great Phil said to communicate to Jean-Louis that he would like to run... because he told him Pinal! What can it mean?

Vierville 21 April 1939Friday(EXTRACTS)
Because tomorrow, Georges and Suzon (and naturally Bison) are waiting for us to be in the car, with a few packages of clothes and clothes in case of war. We have already brought the contents of our chests and jewelry. There are many other things to save, more precious in the apartment, and all the expensive memories of our family life, but it is impossible to think about. You will read in my letter to Simon that in Paris, and without it appearing a line in the newspapers, we accentuate the precautions rushed, it does not bring the worst and it is more prudent, but it is understood that the nerves are alive, and especially those of women and mothers. Suzon will see his two sons leave at the same time, it is a harsh sacrifice that we accept as good patriot, but that is crushing the heart. We watch! We are right! but only anxiety to satisfy the ambition of this Hitler and Mussolini. They are two fools who think they are great men, and play our sons' lives with serenity. What do you become in all this, my John, while I read with so much pleasure the care that you take to your task? Will you be obliged to leave all this to come back here also do all your duty?Georges will not be called everything of sute – he is 52 years old – he can be paid to the DCA. Marcel Hersent asked him if he could count on him until he was mobilized. The answer is easy to guess, so he would go for Le Blanc, with Hébert, Bénzeth and probably your old Valley ( ?). All the others leave in the first few days.
......... Roger Busson who sends insurance papers to sign tells me that he expects to be called day by day and that he is very concerned about his own, because on leaving he closes shop.
......... Meanwhile, we live here in the most absolute calm, in the middle of a splendid countryside.....I don't leave the property, where it is so good to stroll by picking some florets......What a pity to be unable to enjoy the heart and quiet spirit of all this beauty! I am repairing the mischief of winter, there was, not to mention my garden......... The mason had to redo several slices of mulches, here for 800F, and my kitchen stove is crying out thanks. The smoker called here will fix this, for...7 or 800F too! I anticipate that apart from the roofer and some urgent paintings I will stand there for now. We will set up these days the beautiful new gate of the vegetable garden, Leon will exercise his talents to paint and varnish the doors and barriers, with the grid we can wait for the rigors of next winter.
....... I started to double the 8 large curtains in my summer room, it's not a small business, I beg you to believe, fortunately that I bought four years ago at a advantageous price a 60m piece of cream satinette; this has made it possible to repair many disasters, but I will finish it with these 8 large pieces. In the end I have almost redone all the linings of the large curtains of the house. That is what to occupy otherwise the minds at least the fingers.
....you'll have read the Paris disaster in the papers...(accidental fire from a large ship)The more the investigation continues, the more certainty of an attack becomes clear. The police were warned for two days and, in fact, it was Normandy that had to blaze. desired flour stored near the pastry, and as there must have been some barrels on Normandy... How sad all this! We complain a lot in Normandy, and everywhere! of the attitude of Spanish refugees; in Caen women hang students in the street, and men insult our women – known air! –... In Lisieux before leaving a building where they had been put temporarily and furiously of this measure, they all broken into the house and went out singing the International.
. . .I had this week's visit from Mrs. Ygouf and Mrs. Campserveux who renewed their thanks to you for your generous donation to the school canteen, without you closing a month earlier.

Vierville,Friday, April 28, 1939(EXTRACTS)
8h1/.2 in the morning, I just received your good letter... with Simon's... ...it's a good awakening that softens the wait for this speech of Hitler which must throw us in the face all his resentment around 1pm. We no longer expect the punch of this energist on the table, it must have felt all week that we all react with our allies, and that it would not be good to rub it this time. We are really determined to tap without waiting; and we still have some help that can make the famous Rome-Berlin axis reflect......... This war would be a massacre for our youth......let us pray to God and hope. I spend my time raising the morale, we must recognize that the situation would be critical for many; the small farmers mobilized, the women remain alone to do all the work. Yesterday, Leterrier – who did his duty very bravely during the last war – expressed sadly the concern that would be caused by the departure of his two sons, his son-in-law, his great valet (a brave orphan boy whom they raised on the farm), he would stay with 2 14-year-olds and women to sow, till, harvest 100 hectares of land and care for 90 heads of cattle....
.... It is necessary to understand all the events that will leave after the war. Roger Busson, for example, wrote that he left, he closes shop; that is all to do when he returns.
(Busson?) is getting acquainted, trying to keep and live, and I would have lists so to submit to you, that doubles the concern of those who leave. In Paris, we have not yet finished distributing masks, but each building has a list of instructions for its tenants.
.......Georges, Suzon, and the Bison (reavement of this opportunity, it's beautiful to be young) brought me a lot of clothes and linen on Sunday, "for if in case" . I offered Georges to bring his old dad and his sacred sister, but I did specify that it could only be for a very short stay, and you know why! George also knows, but it takes away a thorn from his foot than to know where to direct his own. We will always find them to be installed in Bayeux, St-Lô, Treviières, Isigny, at the hotel or furnished.........
.........I had a good luck when I was offered lobsters, something quite rare here (if only we had done so in January!)C'estr le son de la brave maître Sauvage que vous connaissez bien, son dernière, un homme de 18 ans, qui vat le suivant pour Cherbourg et s'engage dans la Marine "Are you defending France, s'pas?" Well paid lobsters to go fatten the mahurin's bursicot.
We're preparing the first one here.era Communion, I dressed one of Jeanne Colibeuf's sons with a complete marine blue, and completed some of the clothes of several others, both girls and boys. We will come as usual, taste in the park to entertain ourselves during the days of retirement before the great day; I will send the brioches to bless for the ceremony. But I will make sure to see the priest as little as possible, he asked to notate an increase of subsidies, stressing that he was not pulling Nothing "These large farms and turret houses I am mad, and I do not hide my way of thinking about anyone, I know what comes out of my pocket (and what came out of yours) to garnish the priest's. The mayor said to him "But Mr. the priest, you have enough to live, you are registered for income tax." It is not your concern that this one (that is at least 10,000 F of rent, and I know that he bought 60,000 F of a villa from one of his nephews, it is he who told me). I am too angry to tell the priest what I think at the moment, I don't forget that he is a priest, so I will wait, but he won't cut it!

Paris 13 May 1939Saturday(EXTRACTS)
......... And this week again I am filled with this beautiful post that I found on Thursday, in my great astonishment in my place of lunch with your grown-ups. It makes me happy and I enjoy good music and even the chattering of well-intentioned people. It is equipped with the latest improvements and here, without or almost any antenna, I can have the communications with the most extravagant, even far away posts. where I was taken with the little post of my boys the English, Italian, boaches concerts with remarkable clarity. This will amaze my country parties, and I thank you with all my heart.....
......Nothing else here, all health is good, the weather is pretty good and the political horizon is brightening. It is clear that the firm conduct of our government imposes it on these gaillards of the East and the SE whose fad seems to be somewhat tarnished since the measures taken by France and its allies. You will undoubtedly read that a German plane, mounted by two unidentified civilians had fallen near Pontarlier. In reality, for several days planes had been flying over our territory with a disincentive. We had warned our neighbours that this last plane was shot down by one of our own. After the investigation, these two civilians were 2 under-age officers, and the aircraft contained 2 machine guns and a camera. The Germans sent investigators, but the most absolute secret prevailed over their stay in France.
In Paris, life continues, it seems that one wants to know that the worry does not kill distractions. The salons are opening up, and it is said that there are very beautiful works. This week, the light opened its doors. Gaby kindly sent entrances to the opening which took place one evening, but these were distributed with such generosity that at 10 am we were waiting for more than 100m. Your elders fled, the Prouveur trampled 1h1/2, after which Mr Prouveur very tired, had to abandon the continuation. Cordelle had been there at 9 a.m. with the two boys, could get there very quickly, but Gaby had been less rushed and found that expectation excessive for something where he should have been king, said to the Republican guard who kept the door "I am the Director of CPDE (the Parisian EDF of the time), "The CPDE does not know, and then you don't have to do it, you're not the only one who tried to pass through." Very horribly I don't need to tell you that all these agitations are no longer allowed. I have given up without much regret. I have much more to be unable to be of use to my own and others! As a Christian I should offer the sacrifice to God for my past mistakes and my future life, I am not sure if I have yet arrived there with serenity? This may come.
.....Suzon saw Flondrois, I couldn't go, it was raining. He got him standing, dressed, it's not to be concluded that he was better; it's only a good day in the middle of others.
......I left Vierville more beautiful than ever, what a pity it was not 100km closer, we would go every Sunday. .....It was a debauchery of colors to try a painter, but not a modern, it was too soft for their eyes!...

Paris 3 June 1939EXTRACTS)
......... Suzon went to see the old Flondrois more and more tripping on his legs and accounting for what's grim. Then on Wednesday Challon offered tea to the engineering staff of the office. Bénézeth was not, however, (?) neither were the Héberts, for they are still in Cannes, the Sagne, Vallée, Lefèvre and your elders, but the master and mistress made efforts to be kind. They live in a beautiful apartment in the Monceau neighbourhood, but empty of furniture.
......I had a reply from Thibaut about the debts I own, he still works in a factory, and will come to me on a Saturday; but he is completely agreed to repay me without the help of businessman, in order to avoid expenses. ( ?)preparing my papers, and Suzon was looking for them for study.
.....I think I'll go on June 17 to Vierville by car with your elders who will come back the next day. What a wonderful way to get there! And I'll have enough to do something to get things done. We never end up in this big house. It seems that the vegetable garden is beautiful, the wood is beautiful, but my hedge is definitely poor. The horse has grown fat and has its beautiful hair shiny summer....

Paris Saturday, June 10, 1939(EXTRACTS)
I'm just writing to Simon, my Jean, when he sends the letter to you, so it will be next week, and then it will be Rio and the ports of call. (Cordelle is about to leave Argentina permanently) If I have a very happy heart, I also think of the emptiness that will be caused by the departure of your elders from whom you have led a good family life, the little ones will be well-slept, fortunately they are 2! They will shake elbows, like you, and then your new home with its "living space" will allow them not to regret the garden of Simone with its flowers and plants....
.........As you will see in Simon's letter, I paid myself on Wednesday a small stroke of malaria that mercilessly demolished for 24 hours. It is now finished, I saw Artaud again this morning and he strongly commits me to go next Saturday 17 June as I intended to Vierville. Your kind grandms will drive there as in a chair, that's the case, but unfortunately for them, it will have to resume the way to Paris the next day because we... - No, I'm not. Not with this in the office, no! It is not yet the work that stifles people, says Georges.
...Here fortunately the whole house is going well, including our 4 boys who put a famous blow; and it must have been hard by the oven temperature we've been experiencing all week. It was horribly painful in this suffocating and airless Paris, even hot, impossible to leave the windows open at night because of the noise of the street that is increasing every day. Truly our old Vierville with all the charm and well-being that it provides or holds.
......... You are very kind to have your alcohol bath heater dropped off in Vierville; we were very much deprived of hot water for the bath, for a few years and it was reduced to washing in small piles.
...I was disturbed by the visit of old Thibaut who declared himself ready to repay me as soon as he touched his forebend; the poor old man worked hard in a factory in Essonnes, despite the deformative rheumatisms which he brought back from Salonique and which prevented him from walking. It was the pactole that fell into his hands, but it remained confused by speaking to him, of his naivety, and it was not surprising that none had benefited! Me who just told him what he was going to touch and when he touched him (I knew by Dautry), he remained in his mouth, it will certainly be over 200,000 F. He hardly believed in 15 or 20,000 F. His son remains the owner of Adolphe's apartment and the one who touches him on 1ir These poor people are really deprived of any defense, if they deal with crooks, the case is made.
.... George must soon make you a parcel of used books, some of which are to be bound by charm.... ...Imitation of Jesus Christ of Father, but to whom will he entrust it? For the engravings of the chalcography of the Louvre, why not take those of Father who are in Vierville in a box at the attic where they will only damage; the hiccupation is to send them, but one can bring himself with cardboard tubes made for this. The Chedals are perfectly agreed and unless they interest the Simon, ask him, and answer me....I'm sure your furniture will be very beautiful, but for God's sake it doesn't bother too much. You know that we don't pay for the newcomers' moves anymore, and they'll put up the employees' houses. It's actually more rational and economical....

Paris Thursday, June 15, 1939(EXTRACTS)
.....I leave on Saturday at about 1h1/2 with your elders who kindly want to avoid the journey by train. Dr. insists that I leave as soon as possible in order to enjoy the sun and the good air on which he counts to retrace me...I think it would take me 20 years less.
...The old Flondrois is still going a little worse, his niece has come to see the Dr and he hasn't hidden from him that he should go to the countryside, but accompanied by his family. The niece does not ask better than to leave, but I doubt that he accepts it. So ?I am leaving without seeing him again, will I ?Our old friend Busson is in agony... ...and an old friendship that goes away! Fortunately, the youth is around us, he is fast-paced, going, our two boys Cordelle started Philo this morning with courage, they have worked well. Jean-Pierre has been passing Central since Tuesday....
......I saw Tantine completely and more in the process than ever before, she has come to organize a beautiful concert at the Family. Despite my regret, I did not ask her to come to visit me in Vierville this year, the climate is harsh and she is as unreasonable as possible, a true child to watch. Last year, I did not find her feet in the water, at the beach by a bitter kiss, she had already had her first pulmonary congestion! I explained it to her son who approved me, and also to herself. Yet she is very pleasant to live, and I have always had pleasure having her near me.
...Do you not forget, my John, to send me my mate, I will need for my rent and pay half of my taxes as it should before July 31. I beat the reminder of all my availabilities, because I am leaving for 4 good months.
...FridayWe just had the phone call announcing the death of our old friend Busson. He is to Peace, near God, he deserved it well, and on himself that one weeps.
.....Well received your good letter, my John, and am very happy that my Jean-Paul is getting better and better, he is a beautiful child who has everything to do well. As for Pinal!...
nothing like the children to get you out of your ideas, and I see here the man!...
...I have seen Thibaut and written to his businessman a recommended letter, because he has not yet received anything from him. He has everything to be plucked again, the poor being, it is worse than Uncle Robert!...
