LETTERS from NANY to his son JEAN HAUSERMANN,1937, extracts

Inflation has become rampant, following wage increases and the Popular Front: +25.7% for the year!

...I just put my whole smalah back in the car, Jean, to return to Paris, because the school children will be back tomorrow morning...
...the gentle weather allowed for walks, even by the sea, where one fished gogins, the big attraction was hunting the merles – 3 – and also the ravens. Jean-Pierre had his father after his baphot, the rifle of his dreams, and I lent a few times my father's hunting rifle to shoot the ravens, when they came to perch in the evening. There are bands of them in the woods. Lady! I tremble a little to see them with that in my hands and I keep preaching caution. We had very limited cartridges naturally.
I have taken advantage of my stay to see many of our good people; first there are so many miseries to relieve, smiling miseries because they do not complain, but miseries all the same, everywhere they ask me for your news. Here is Emile Thomas whose son will make his communion, I will dress as I had dressed the father, time passes ..Vu les Dagoubert, Balmont, Saillard, whose house has just burned down, and the mother waits for her 11nd In a few days, they were very helpful – that of our countryside – Blin, Pohier, the factors, Dubois, Leterrier, Auvray, etc., etc. my farmers paid for almost everything they owed me, selling apples ms brought back 310F, in addition to the 2 barrels of which one of pure juice, made for our personal consumption.
The brave Dubois is very much employed in his profession as mayor, he is a good man who has his frankness to speak for all and bites without letting go when he holds the piece, Legallois knows what, and what others also deserved to be put on the table.
We are looking to form societies of "young fighters" formed by young people who have served in the military since the war and those who are likely to do their service soon; the president of this young society is here the elder of the Leterrier, the vice president Guillaume de Bughas; we would be very happy to see you in it, I think you would be happy to write either to Dubois or to the young Leterrier, asking that we be inscrive. Suzon was asked to register his two sons, which she did not ask for better of course. I think the amount of the contribution is 10F, but I guess we can give more; I'll send the statutes as soon as they're sent to me, but the main idea is to get together to get to know each other better, to help each other if necessary, without it being allowed. Never to make politics, all opinions are accepted, from white to red, but We don't want communists. It is curious to see how one fights this scourge; and it is said very loudly that it is serious and that the condition is "sine qua none", one of the young suspicious factors has been put in its place. There are good heads who have returned their box since the firmness of the others. It is a good movement.
On all sides I hear that we are moving to fight Bolshevism. The example of Spain has allowed many reactions and our government itself has put water in its wine. It was really overburdened. The beginning of the year ss is forecast less dark than we thought, so let's hope in the wisdom of our old and dear country and it was time for us to get together! I will try to find some number of Gringoire where Tardieu exposes with a lot of common sense, that we must not overdo it, and that what happens is not so much worse than what has been; that a Blum or Daladier or Sarraut government is the same thing, the machine is broken, we have to do everything again, but not believe that a change of ministry will bring peace; I am sure that the pot is cracked, we have to make it clean....
.... George sprained himself down a mountain, it's not serious, he's better. L'argent comes home, I think they will soon be back, I'll be very happy for all of them! My boys are going very well, they have been getting strong, they work very well, I hope they will be good to fulfill my task. They have health, it will be easy, because they are easy to live and direct. Mrs Cordelle has taken care of the rest, since the beginning of October. Don't do too much for your old mom, my Jean, and then the good Suzon is there who is looking after the grain with as much affection as you....
Parissaturday, 9 January37
....Suzon went to Zézeth yesterday to present his duties (Ms. Bénézeth) She was apparently very old, in June they were so afraid of the revolution that she had already gone to England where he had to go to find her.
Poor Mrs. Dessus is getting tired, but she still has two months to wait if she goes to the end. It's really awful to wait for a child in such conditions.
Gillette Jenny, she, is very valiant, and with this admirable courage, looking after everything, taking care of everything at home, including making lingerie and clothes for her and the little ones. She still finds the way to make knits that her sister sells; and receiving almost every Sunday in her little house in Rueil, where she offers tea to friends, reinforced with cakes of her garment. She really has the merit of smiling at the arrival of her 4nd.
Our boys are fine and also the girl who grows in width to his mother's great dam who would like to see him the line. I have sent Simon the size of his sons: 1 m 76 – 1 m 691/2! It is not bad, and with that 1kilo and 2k1/2 of wins. They work very well and the success of Francis seems certain, unless a very bad luck, Jean-Pierre is very well noted and his math teacher told him that he would be received by continuing to work well. Good news of Piraeus, Phil works very well, his father with admirable patience has taken up math with him, and he has the satisfaction to see it now. It is a great point of learning.

....I've sent by the same mail... a placard on Mermoz that is very successful here and for cause. We're very severe for the Air Ministry about it, they claim that the plane was sabotaged, the other day during the news at the cinema (until the appearance of TV, we had every movie session 20 minutes of cinema news in the theaters) where Pierre Cot was represented (the Minister of the Air, a companion of the Communists) praising the missing of the South Cross, a loud cry sent "Assassin! The operator was forced to stop the projection. It is constant to hear with vigour everything that affects the Popular Front. The healthy population was reuniting or rather getting in the way, it was time! You'll read the protest (strike) of engineers and masters in the North. Until now, there were only those who were proletarians. Everyone's turn, France isn't dead, live France! ....
23January1937
....we talked about you all with the lovely Nelly (Mangin)who was long-suffering to give me details, you were all good, but she found Simon well-weighted. J-en sorry, she told me that Simon was very tormented for his boys...and for me! Thanks to God, everything is fine at this moment, I write to her to take back from the brain, it must! because nothing can be changed to the established order of things. So let's take it with courage. I would like to see the three little ones in Riachuelo with the beautiful boats. Nelly told us that she did not recognize the Titi so grown up with her frizzy awakening. ...
...I paid for the class books of John Paul...... the book of calculation only gets at the course Hattemer who makes difficulties to send it. I wrote by promoting the courses followed by your nephews Cordelle, and I asked for this one for Simone who will receive the two copies and give them to you. ...
...I learned from Tantine, who often sees Jeanne Hausermann (also at the Family Circle d'Auteuil) that Alice and the Feuillesbois have been in Morocco since July. Alice lives at Emile, Martha is in Casa with her husband and André who has a situation. Have you had news from Emile?
Paris1irFebruary(1937)
...the arithmetic books (which I had difficulty getting from the Hattemer course) were sent to Simon, because I thought (and that was correct) that it would be more willing for her who had taken all the courses for her sons; I said that it was for her. Two Last sons, for they only wanted to send one. They are jealous, just because of their perfect method, and I will not be able to congratulate you too much to have it followed to your elder. The result obtained near the boys is magnificent. They both seem to want the navy!! This is not because they do not want their parents to do it, Simon said that she recommended not to push them. I will not be guilty, but between comrades they cause and do not need anyone to know what they want. Veremos! They are fine; other than that little cold, it doesn't matter: I don't have to worry about last year, and I hope to hold on until the parents return, which I wish not too far, because I always believe that the management Father George now realizes that I was not wrong when I insisted on his return. ......Georges did not know his sons... ...and our female authority is worth nothing in front of these little men who need a little bit of a bit of a hard screw, and yet it's two excellent children that your nephews Chedal; what do you want, women don't have the way, and I remember the help that your dear Father, who didn't seem to take care of you so much, knew how to give the direction you had to take.
I've been to my safe this week and taken a package of titles that I'll wear tomorrow at Crédit Lyonnais...I'm so much more quiet now that I can avoid the complications you know. At this moment the masters of the hour seem less angry, and for cause; but I don't trust them and one of these days we will be able to find the more or less vexatious measures that we were promised – at this moment it is about finding good pears that will satisfy the loan. It's not easy, I believe, this one drags along; We're just borrowing in London for 9 months, but we're going to have to pay back, and the budget is billions of dollars that we don't know where we're going! I don't know where we're going; ... at least from a financial point of view, because otherwise we agree that internal conflicts are getting down and that, in addition, a very large part of the population has recovered, and that we won't be swallowed...we'll get in the way. Our leaders know that, and the reds know that the leagues are held in their hands by their leaders, now partly linked to each other, and that we would be ready to hold on, if necessary! Last June we were not there.
Externally, according to the speeches of all international talkers, one would believe in a universal desired peace! But the Spanish affair with the Mosquito support that it receives, is a thorn ready to sting and set fire to the powders. Still no one wants the war, we must give a good point to our Parliament which voted almost unanimously for non-intervention in Spain....
...Leon wrote this morning that the sea once again took the road from the sea. It hit all our coasts, the wind swirled everywhere; our rivers rise and we are beginning to fear for the next exhibition, of which almost all the constructions are on the banks of the Seine. That would be the peak, we are not already in advance....
.... Considering the Héberts on Sunday...he told us that Chalon had just been eliminated from 2 important works in St Nazaire and Brest with prizes! .. For Littardi, he wanted to put him second of Bertard at Bizerte...but Chalon had set Canonne there. In Persia it will be difficult. Mrs Sagne who went there spent 3 months contested with the wife of a tunnel specialist...Sagne demanded the dismissal of the husband. This had a very bad effect and cost a lot. I suppose he did not leave without a great compensation...
Paris12 February1937Wednesday
...I spent 3 days in Vierville of peace and contemplation...
...I'm not gonna charge Gilbert (Hersent) with the fif ( ??) And from the box, I don't want to owe him anything (maybe the boys who will bring it) All I ask of this excited one is to grant the increase that you have asked; the departure of Drillon must, moreover, put on the carpet the serious question of your situation, and that you will probably soon be fixed on what is expected of you, if so much as one can have a firm answer in the house Hersent...to the grace of God. I trusted you, my John, in your courage; but I do not expect anything from the Emile side, he is very selfish that one! Good in the end, yes! But he could have long been interested in you, nothing but remembering everything your father and I did for him!
...the shop is closed (a bookstore)......a very likely failure. There are many of them here despite everything the government is saying too high: "It's all right!" We hear complaints from all sides; life is very difficult in France....
I saw no one in Vierville but our good people, was going to the canteen where about fifteen kids ate a hearty lunch. I brought dessert in the form of cakes, I was very well received. The teacher, whom you know, is organizing a child's party to make the budget for the so-called canteen. I was for 2 books of tickets and a lot to provide... that I might get back to the top!Vu Dubois and Pohier – I'm going to put fertilizer on the apple vineyard, he deserved it well...
Saturday, 27 February 1937
... Based on the news from Simon on February 18th, I conclude that you are at this moment in Punta del Este, where, I hope, you are spending a good day. Is the journey easy to travel by car? Have you seen the friends Martin – Tonazzi? ....
...Here it all goes, I was tired again at the beginning of the week – liver – but I went up the slope, it's going well, almost very well, and I rise up despite the rain! Because it falls, my friends, to believe that it is a new flood...... L-Exposition does not lead wide, despite the objurations of our dear President of the Council who I'm sorry. The workers are going to put the double bites. It's not enough that nature is mixing it up! But it may be a good excuse for the inauguration of an exhibition that will not be ready for the first time.ir May. The pavilions that are seen in the skeletons are all made of light materials, except for Germany, a beautiful construction with metal beams that make more than one bastard admire. The hammer blows sound there even after the hour agreed by the delegates of the powerful CGT. In any case our quiet neighborhood is above, and it is necessary to count well more than a year before finding the ordinance of streets and avenues. Our Troca has decidedly lived and you will not recognize the ensemble of palaces that replace it. It sounds better, and once you've missed something that you've been used to seeing, you have to admit that nothing has been lost in the exchange.
Our boys are looking forward to the visits they can make in there, but there is also this damn baccoth whose date is coming and towards which will be going to make all the effort. If everything goes well... Francis will not be left until July 10 or 12, and JP around 20. Time to board my two young travelers and I think we will hardly be settled in Vierville before the end of July, almost a month later than usual. Phil will most likely pass his ferry in Athens. He works well and Georges has great hope... I also think that Georges will definitely return in July... this separate housekeeping life cannot be extended forever and I want Marcel (Hersent) I tried to say two words to Benezeth when he came to me, but I couldn't get anything out of it, naturally.
......I didn't leave this week, and I was still praying with Suzon at several of our friends, ...and yesterday at one of our country neighbours, Mrs. Finochi, the wife of a big shoemaker who lives in St. Pierre du Mont and whose children see ours. Suzon met there Guillemette de Pierres and Sabine de Loÿs, here for a few days. It seems that Madame de Pierres no longer wants to hear about living in France, she wants to sell everything and go to Switzerland. Guillemette promised her father to do everything to keep Louvières and the poor girl is stunned between a thousand feelings.
See also Mrs Godard who went through my house and has kindly gone up. Her son Pierre writes to him from Belgium that business goes full, but Louis has a great deal of trouble with his sugar ... and his workers. Industrialists, engineers are to complain at this moment. You are happier in Argentina! You know only the joy of working. Here, thanks to the "frente popular" we no longer speak of work, but of rest, sad thing!
The old uncle is back on his feet and he's writing me.
Martha Pichorel is getting better and starting to come out; as I couldn't go to see her (she remains a vavert devil) I asked her about the news over the phone and played her trick to tell her after the traditional question: "Who is on the phone?" – Here is Mr Blum's secretary, ma'am! I'm listening." I couldn't hold a laugh and the charm was broken; I was copiously caught at the end of the line, and the most courteous of the rest by this brave girl who is better than her opinions. Robert is still as sorry as her sister doesn't act. ...
... Mrs. Dessus is still as dolent, she claims that it's been at least 10 months, Gillette is very lucky.
Paris20March1937Saturday
...the whole band will be boarding on Monday for Vierville. I'm saying full because yesterday I had a high fever, fortunately about to fall today, light angina? Liver ? a little cold after playing tennis with too much dread on Thursday?
...the capital with all its political agitations badly repressed by a powerless government, would gain to be wiser. We are a bunch of brave people who opin in this direction, but a handful of energy-powered leaders are looking for a fish in the water. Clichy's case, is a sad episode, the hatred that the communists carry at the Fire Crosses is ardent, precisely because they feel there a party, well decided when it will have to, to block them from the road, but the watchdog of the government and its President of the Council is obvious; they dare not do any work. The strike of the next day surprised everyone, especially the workers who went for miles to get to their job, from noon everyone was at his post, except the workers of the Expo who took advantage of this good opportunity to put their hands in their pockets, and watch the unfortunate qqnot affiliated with the CGT, whose courage would deserve more support from the leaders. However we worked full at the Boches and the USSR!!The outrage was general, but the CGT laughs at what the rest of the population can think. I wonder where the show will be at the time of opening, and those who will come there will be stolen.
...I prayed well for all of you, my dear children, doing my Easter Sunday. We were all gathered at the holy table, with a crowd of people, which makes such a fine example of faith so comforting. It is to be noted that there are more and more men to share. The end of this Sunday day was more profane for the young band that it is appropriate to keep in joy. Our Suzon had gathered a gathering of young comrades, sisters and friends (including Nicole Dessus and the 2 daughters of Renée de Lépinay) they gave themselves to hearty from 4am to 9am because the good Suzon kept everyone to share a rich plate of cold meat and Russian salad that was tasted sitting on the floor on cushions, in the defurled lounges of Suzon. I leave you to think the joyousness of this little world. The girl held her role... already! She really dances without ever learning. Michel risked, not so bad my faith, the great Francis was acting as conductor – at the pick up – and JP was doing the honors of the house with a lot of kindness and self-denial – a surprise party – but Suzon had added a nice buffet trim, which was tasted very much by all these young appetites. Renée de Lépinay came to pick up her daughters who no longer wanted to leave......Gaby also came to look for her daughter-in-law who was given to heart; we had news of the birth that will probably pass on the operating table .... an appendicitis and a fibroma. The baby's not lucky. (Pascal Dessus, I think) It's great, but it's a shame it's not a boy!
My apartment was used as a locker – they were about 40 people.
During this joyful meeting, I received Gilbert Hersent's visit, who came to see the boys and take news of them to their parents. It was nice. I was at his house yesterday to carry two boxes of lollipops and little Easter chicks, I hesitated to entrust him with something else, but not! It was better not; your business would go another time. I saw his wife...... she was very kind as well as Gilbert I hadn't seen since.. X times...
....I've been visited Mrs. Bénézeth who kept me for tea by lovingly speaking to me about all of you.
....It seems that the 40-hour week was adopted on London Street
(Paris offices in Hersent)...I don't come back. Every day, office from 9 am to 12 noon 1⁄4 - 2h1/4 to 6h1/4 – Saturday morning 9am to 12h3/4 – leave in the afternoon. Suzon laughs at it and thinks of his great Georges who will be so happy to enjoy this leave, and I think of your dear father who would have been so happy too!
Good news of the Piraeus where Phil works well. Georges hopes to return this summer, but Marcel (Hersent) He doesn't care if he gets Georges back here, that's my opinion. It seems they have big worries in Persia where the credits remain terribly frozen! Happy job as the entrepreneur or public works engineer at this moment...
ParisFriday, 23 April 1937
...I want to go to the old uncle who threw me a SOS, because he's back in the hospital – still having heart problems, he has tension and can't afford too much food and pure wine – but I suspect he won't watch his diet as soon as he gets delivered to himself; it takes me a whole afternoon to go to Sarcelles, I leave home at 1am....
...our little (Bison) So yesterday, with a great deal of piety in the midst of a cohort of little girls of his age, the ceremony was very beautiful, very touching too; a good missionary bishop with a sweet smile confirmed them in the afternoon...the good great George and Phil must have experienced much sadness of their distance...... fortunately the 4 young people including heroine of the day had to resell after the obligation to spend hours at the church. All week was busy with our little one, whom Suzon and I accompanied in turn to the various exercises of retirement...
...all health is good here, I have taken back a series of strychnine bites that already worked very well last autumn, in order to completely re-establish myself from the Truss's leg (Bousquet)We were talking about it the other day with the Flondrois friend we went to see at his house (he's going much better) he was also getting back to him; our good Dr. Artaud (still lying down, he, well-suffering) sees red when we talk about this ... accident, if one can say, he claims that with my sick liver one could go to the worst. Tio Mio also being in the same case, paid for many malaise this lunch.. I confess that I keep one tooth to the interested, to whom I will serve this dish – digested or not – at the 1stera opportunity...
Your mother is about to go back to the North to accompany Marguerite here: I thought the good little family resettled in Brest, I forgot that these gentlemen are imposing their wills even on the National Defense.
They do so many more when the Expo is not being executed, I wonder how the government dares to speak of an inauguration for May 15th! Inauguration of empty pavilions then and barely finished, because it cannot be said of decoration until the big work is dry. Everyone grunts, no one is happy, not even the heroes of the festival, yet pampered by their Popular Front. In a pack of newspapers where Jean-Paul's cards are silent, you will find two green papers that will give you an idea of what is being distributed in our campaigns. In Paris the PPF with Doriot, the PSF with La Roque, and many others, are ready to merge against the reds; the 1ir (Dorio, a former communist, turned extreme right) writes throughout, in his newspaper L-Emancipation Nationale, "I am ready to join with the devil if it is necessary, to drive out the communists"...
...Tio Mio only goes out to get electric applications at his doctor, he's been well touched and he's still very pale...
...I went to see the Beaujon, has a terrible mine, and as I told him to retire, he replied that he could Not even in the countryside. very Nice apartment that would indicate a certain ease. He also said that the 200 families
(The newspaper L-Humanity had denounced 200 families who would have owned the French wealth, so the Hersents had to be part of it?)
He did a lot of harm to Hersent, which there was no week when he was not looking for an inspector. It is quite obvious that the brave Beaujon must be precious in these cases. There are many things that he must be about alone to know......the son-in-law (from Beaujon) operating at loss property almost entirely expropriated by the National Defense at derisory prices. ...
...Jean-Pierre...... found the way to get muscled, he was ranked for a swimming challenge between high school under the chairmanship of Minister Lagrange....
ParisSaturday, May 8, 1937
...I'll write to you next week... your elders needing long details about their little sick. (François seems to have been operated on an emergency basis)......let's forget the bad days, I bring our little one back this afternoon, when I think of the state where he was when he left, and that there is only 10 days, I can't believe it, it seemed so long! The death of the old uncle seemed less painful. So life goes, the young ones first...... this week, everything has been subordinated to our Francis that I left as little as possible. You will read the details in the letter to your elders...
Paris12May1937Wednesday
....our François, although in very good condition, was still lying......I still trembled back! Dr. Artaud, still badly put, who insisted on climbing my floors to see the rescued before yesterday......m--repeated that we had a lot of luck with our little one, whose state, this sad Thursday, was more than critical..we could fear the worst if the operation had not been done the same day, or if it had not succeeded. His state of perfect health allowed a prompt and happy recovery, which is still an almost hopeless chance because the temperature could be maintained very high for qq days.
.... Friday morning, on the surgeon's advice, I go with Fr and Martha to Vierville where he will finish to recover, we will come back 8 days later.......it was very badly fallen, it happened with peace on the fateful date (on 1 Januaryir baphot), we'll have to put the double bites... the math teacher from Kayser who saw Jean-Pierre didn't seem to doubt it, and as Jean-Pierre pointed out to him that Fr was tormenting himself for the French "Beautiful Fog" he wrote. I'm not quite in his opinion, but with a little luck...
...time remains mild, the day of Coronation (King George VI crowned) In London, while writing you, I hear the organ and the band that welcome the rulers to Westminster, JPa's little post was brought to Fr's room that makes him walk for days. It is a delicious distraction for "France" (as Suzon says) that joins his usual training, an appetite that I have to cool down to not run the risk of gastric embarrassment...
...I hope you're back from your beautiful journey, my John, and that at the end of it has resulted interesting information for future work. Under Castello's leadership, it must have been an excellent lesson for you....
....Georges writes to Suzon, with a lot of circumlocutions, that he has your carpets......if you want to thank him, send your letter to Suzon who will make follow by the suitcase (diplomatic suitcase, which avoids customs, censorship, checking of correspondence, etc.) All correspondence is open and as Georges is suspected, - wrongly, helas! - of having passed capital out of Greece, his letters are very peeled, at the slightest suspicion, he would be imprisoned, and the prison regime has nothing tender, a little what we do to the Italian fascists for their opponents. In essence the system is the only one likely to give good results for the regime! If only we could use it with our deputies of the Popular Front.
Despite the government's defense, the parade in front of St Jeanne d'Arc has been denser than ever before, our boys have been there as it should be; we estimate the number of people who have marched. It is even more than the ten thousand affiliated members of the popular front of the demonstration of the Place de la République. ...
ParisSaturday, 29 May 37
...I found a paper light enough to put a little more ease in my correspondence...(it's even harder to decipher for me! the paper is almost completely transparent and written on both sides)
....vousto announce to him the death of the old uncle. He again expressed his resentment against Public Assistance, for which it has been 7 years since I spoke to him about Robert and Jeanne's will, he informed himself of the remaining parents and announced to my great surprise that you are the alone So you'll have to establish a proxy, I'll send you the formula that you will sign and legalize by the consul. Lot believes it will bring you back something. Of course you will accept this inheritance with the benefit of inventory, so it won't involve you...... it seems that the complicated situation of the apartments on Street P. Nicole is the cause of the delay in the settlement, the liquidator does not put much pressure on me to solve this matter... but if your brother-in-law Chedal returns, I suppose his intervention will be better than mine or that of the old uncle or his cousins, as erased one than the other...
...I have read with great interest, Jean, the details of your trekking in the Chaco, how picturesque! and I see you around suitcases loaded with surprises brought back from there. I am as happy to see you well oriented after the departure of Drillon, thanks to the great Jean who gave you a good shoulder shot. (Gilbert Hersent) you will continue his kindnesses and good courage at work that must not miss you with the new works.
Friday, 11 June 37
...that we have the joy of seeing ourselves next year for the leave we are already talking about...
...The preparation of our schoolchildren was excellent and the result also, but an examination (on 1 Januaryir François's baccalaureate, the 2nd (Jean-Pierre's ferry) always has hazards and we need to reach out. But I would like to be in Cherbourg on July 10 (François and Michel must leave for Rosario for 2 months, but if François misses his baccalaureate...)
...because he (Georges) Still gets paid (the Greeks' regulations on the work) There are large sums in the bank, all is to bring them in (in France)...but it's another story, and Georges claims that there's 25 years to go. In any case, he's determined not to wait for them...
Paris3 July 1937
...I saw your mom yesterday,......my two boys who came to greet her.Have looked well (on my invitation) so that you can talk about it better....
Vierville16July 37Friday
...They are vogue, my chicks, and I am very eager to learn what is happening, especially with this sacred vaccine that the Argentine consul imposed on us to declare it useless. (François) seemed to be a good one, because it tired, fortunately I could entrust them to the kind of nurse. (on edge) …
...we are really well dispersed, and I could not tell you that it is for my pleasure that I feel all my dears from the vast isolated world! Our Suzon was only able to leave last night by the Simplon (Simplon-Orient-Express) for Athens, there was no place to be, it will be Sunday near Georges... ...I had this morning a letter from the boys from London...
...here since Tuesday the house is organized as it pleases, but you have to take it from the top down, what aria! Start (?) to find that she is very big and heavy to hold. Actually, it's not an idea I have when you fill her up, but this great house for both of us Bison, it seems exaggerated, I want to bury myself in the little winter corner, but the girl does not hear that, she insists that I resume my summer quarters and my large room, which we will do tomorrow since it is re-established. I have 4 women who trimenting since my arrival, and this is not finished.
I also had the painters who put paper in the boys' room at 2ndYou will find it all rejuvenated, and very modern with the woodwork that the great Georges had planned to put in. It is also the revision of the greenhouse, doors, verandas, windows that the painters are restoring. All this suffers from winter and years... the roofer comes tomorrow to climb on the roofs that need his care.
Leon and Jeanne will be enough to maintain the doors and barriers; they are very busy at the moment in the garden, which is, my faith, very pretty. I have kept you changing the massifs of the lawn in front; it is very successful these flowered bands marrying the rounded shapes of the lawn, it smells its small 18nd I hope you will find this very well when you come. I always have a little d'axiness by changing the usual order, and then it was the one your dear Father had known, and it causes a heart-crack not to follow it... but time pushes us, life, little ones who come too, and it goes on despite yourself, God wanted it so and it is better.
....I didn't see anyone yet...... On the day of the awards, I offered a nice taste of cakes and brioches watered with syrup, to the 60 children of the school, it was a great success. The 2 teachers actively took care of their business, and seemed very happy at the end of the year offered to their students. They are the children of many of those I knew at their age and this brings continuity with your little ones.
I have no idea what's going on at the beach... ... I'm gonna have to worry about putting our house away at the end of the summer. The Collières were supposed to sell me a piece of land, they're being told very badly in their business; the brave Denise is going to settle down in the Leforestier house, near the church, which they own, but to which they don't p.m. making it essential to live; it is more than miserable, I complain them; she especially is full of courage, and will assume the summer alone, without any help, with her 4 children.
They say that Jacques (from Mons) The situation is quite difficult in St Sever. The Stones are not there yet, the Heudrie are still in Trevières, but on foot, like me, because my driver runs the paths to Greece. Nobody can be counted any more at today's time. I am reduced to re-attack Pompon who does not like it at all, and finds the stuffing bad, and then he no longer looks guilleret in the past, if he still has the branch of his blood, which he will not lose. Our Kazan (dog) He is also aged, covered with rheumatism; and my old Maria has not been able to resume her service as a launderer she had held with us for 12 or 13 years, she is very tired. All this would be sad if there were not the young, it is the wife of Emile Thomas who will replace her....
...you have to tell my two little ones that the Bison is not enough to eat the currants, so the whirlwinds, the brazen ones, are put in there, and with what ardour!

...Jean-Pierre who will return by the "Aquitania" of the Cunard, on August 11, by Southampton-Cherbourg. Phil will remain for another dozen days and will return by the Queen Mary, the lucky one, still by Cherbourg...
...Nice tempos here, with a little wind... which drys our garden to the great regret of Leon who, in good Norman he is, does not like to water...
....Our good aunt has just arrived for a week, she's getting old, missing, she's happy to be here....
... J-waiting for Mrs Cordelle for a few days, she was alone in Paris, I signed her up, she arrived tomorrow in car with Guy Jenny and Yvonne who were chasing to Coutainville.
...the Parisians seem less numerous than usual, it is not me who will complain, I see them 9 months a year, it is more than it takes for my happiness....
Vierville13 August 1937
... we have here since yesterday, recovered one of our English, JP arrived at noon having been forced to lie in Cherbourg. His boat having crossed the Channel in intense fog, did not arrive only at 10 am, he docked at the marine station, which makes things very easy for travellers. It is beautifully organized and everything would be perfect without the dockers who put passengers to loot for the transport of luggage. Of course. had to go with three of them when I boarded my boys, I muzzled them with authority, but the Morning, a few days later, in 1era The vice president of the Cherbourg Chamber of Commerce whom I saw and to whom I had told my story (maybe the boys will remember) replied that the representative of the Cégétiste with whom I was a member of the Imposed to discuss four years in prison for theft.
...the day before I had a snack with the Young people Collières and 4 little children Godard brought by their good grandmother, Louis and his wife, Denise were among us, we tasted outside...... And stirred up old memories.........then they visited the old house from the top down, Mrs Godard placing her past life there, her beautiful daughters are charming and cheerful, they are two sisters. I have to see Pierre and his wife next week, they arrive from Belgium where he cares for Phosphates, Louis makes sugar always. Annette was there last week, his life is quite mysterious...
... Mrs Cordelle and Tantine left us on Monday, the first day of the week.era
for Evian, the 2nd For Porquerolles...
...Leon's trouble watering, but our flowers are so successful that he treats them with love.
I'm done with the repairs. The rise in life has rounded my grades, but it had to. The roofer has reworked all the chimneys (?) and had to re-seal the turret (?) and I even had to re-select it.era when climb by the hatch above the toilet of the large room of the 2nd (it's not a life for a nany) J-a took the opportunity to put hooks on the turret that will allow me to tie the ladders; I trembled when I saw the roofer climb on it every year, without attaching.
Leon and Jeanne have passed the carbide to the cement poles that have taken over a youth, there are still some doors to repaint, and that will be all for this year.
Did I tell you that I have the fence of the way to the sea, and made a good barrier with my wood. J-y had "private path" painted, it will stop a little! Parisians, I hope without being sure.
There is naturally a crazy world at the beach, not the most distinguished, "paid holidays" as our people call them, are premium, we wear amazing shorts, sunbathing very steeply, we occasionally make a red propaganda near Normans who listen .. and do not think less, and then we leave, the flat purse, having difficulty paying the last bills.
Did I tell you that I had a visit to the Brunvilles, d'Asnières, their son has failed to make it to the 3rd floor?nd When he's in his baccot, they're so sad.
...Suzon returns by the Italian plane which will leave Athens on Tuesday 17, will drop her off in Turin the same evening, she will take the sleeping which will put her the next morning in Paris: 24h instead of 3d 1⁄2 and less expensive than the 2nd class in the East Express, because of the meals that are forced to take and which cost in the 40F l'un. It seems that all their friends now use this way, that the good God and your dear Father protect them, but I hid the means of transport from the girl who wrote to her father: "Not especially should you let mom come back by plane, you understand I don't want to lose my little mom." George still received nothing from Marcel Hersent. and I still regret to see his return to the Greek calendia......JP said to me with reason yesterday: "In 4 or 5 years, Phil and I will have left the house without having lived with Dad"
ViervilleFriday10Sept.37
...I have just received Simon's letter of September 3rd and I will answer him in Lisbon or orally, because here she is soon on her departure, and I feel all the emotion of the great John to separate from his 4 darlings...
... for 2 months I have been living a full life without having for that to regain my usual training and my activity. My old Dr. Brée has re-tabbed from the machine what it takes to get back to Paris where I will find a more active medical science, but I will not go to wait for the 27 my dear daughter and the boys in Bordeaux, and I have the regret you think. It is so much better to see a beautiful ship arrive, whose slowness to dock your joy, instead of the noisy locomotive that at just the hour, pan! stop at your nose! In any case it is happiness that happens...
...Simon gives me good news of all, including the great John finally rid of these ugly brain colds.
...the weather has suddenly spoiled...we have pulled out the knits... the leaves swirl, the pears are littering the ground... we're back! Already the "Popular Front" has started, there is hardly any left here that the owners of villas, it is the Vierville d'Agosque that had more charm than the one created by this sacred Legallois, who makes his propaganda in Humanity, and drains here, thanks to this, many unwanted people...
...the house is always filled with youth, the great Phil is patient with them, he is very busy with a forge, gift from his father, and will serve as an apprentice to Blin who is delighted to see him interested in his profession. The Bison hardly separates from Gillonne whose nearby area allows frequent exchanges of visits.
...JP has to pass the oral on 27. It falls to peak. J-a-bold promised my boys a canoe – used – it is easy to find this at the end of the season. We just found this here, by chance – good English manufacture, with obviously qq repairs to do, but easy repairs declared my young carpenter – (old Dagoubert no longer works). The hull is in perfect condition, I paid that 150F – it is given, there is for 100F repairs at most. The Phil who went to take possession of the flagship and brought – from St Laurent – by sea, declares delighted, the young porpoise (Jean-Pierre) The new boat was a great desire for everyone, because the canoe of the Touuni, which was beautifully maintained and always in perfect condition, allowed only a canoeer. With the new acquisition, which has 3 places, you can perform sensational maneuvers. ..
..I should have my usual host, the good Tio Mio, here are two letters that Suzon and I write to him who remain unanswered......I wonder if our old friend is not sicker, I'm afraid, his silence is quite unusual. ...
...Suzon arrives Monday night for a few days, she leaves on Saturday 18 for Paris with her 2 children...... there will be just enough time to close the old house and return to Paris to welcome my dear travelers. I will leave the little corner you know, ready to receive us, because our Simon wants to come here for a few days with Titoune...
...good news of Georges who hunts sheep So in the letters, which must always be expected to be read, he claims the last million that he is owed...
... The things of my purchase of land at the sea are going to require a whole new arrangement that you will like, I hope. In the meantime I have our house dismantled next week, it will spend winter in the big stable, in the shelter and will only be up again at Easter. I examined it closely with the carpenter who does not believe in any big mischief by removing it. I have always maintained it well for this purpose.
...The Pépita is getting old, but it didn't drive this summer or almost and then it comes to buying the land that comes to take the availability of a car exchange...
Friday, September 24. 37 Paris
... I have already missed the air mail in Vierville last Friday, thanks to the unexpected visit of the Marquise He was still in the middle of the day, but even more so with his distraught health, he was alone with me, after Suzon and the 2 children had left on the pretext of keeping me company, and he had not imagined that I would be taken back to Paris with him! J-a-a-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-c-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b- It's a miracle that he happens without any trouble (on his trip to Vierville he left a whole wing of his car on the road) He is well changed and well to complain, but this is not a reason to prevent me from writing. I am fierce to reserve my hours of correspondence with you, my dear children, these are too good moments for old Nany who thus appears to be much closer to you. I have just written a word to our Simon, whom Mrs Cordelle will take away. She leaves tomorrow morning, by bus for Bordeaux, via Royan...
... I came home yesterday rather tired. I saw Artaud the next morning, who, after a serious scrutinization, found my heart in bad condition. I wrote to you from my bed where I am severely recorded (as when your marriage came back) for qq days, they sting me from all sides, i'm taking away various drops, i'm feeling like an old carcan... let's admit, if it's to give me a little bit of youth...... Dr claims that this weakness that I (myocarditis) is the easiest to overcome, and that when our Simon and the little ones arrive, I will be valiant. It is obvious that Dr.Brée is getting old, he is not yet in the current energetic methods, he has been treated a little too much with perlimpinpin powder.
..Not to mention, don't go to the table that I'm exposing to you, it's real, no more or less.
... In Vierville we have a wonderful harvest of fruit, and I have offered it on all sides, and there is still a lot of food left to eat.
I prepared winter, renewed and increased (by 100F) the lease of Blin which occupies three small vines (850F), the land takes more value, the lease of Dubois which ends next year will certainly be increased; the products of the land follow the progression, we pay the 12F butter which was worth 6 l ́an last, and everything to the same.
It was also necessary to decide to separate from the old Pompon who was going to have a happy end of life, but without doing any service, he refused to work and I had to borrow horses for the carts. You know my way of thinking about it! On the advice of Laterrier consulted, I decided to sell it to the butcher shop......it is worth 1000 to 1200F. I can no longer neglect this sum which will help me to buy a horse, less rabid, without any doubt, but more useful (2500 to 3000F) and I said goodbye to the poor beast chosen by your father, and who came to eat in our hand the sugar of which he was fond.
Saturday 257bre37
... I'm in a mood to be in bed, but Artaud who came this morning and is very happy with me, claims that the main medication for the heart is absolute rest, and that he doesn't trust himself enough to even allow him the long chair, he may not be wrong!
Paris16 Oct. 1937
It's always from my bed that I write to you, it's long! Fortunately, I'm going to see a glimmer on my horizon! I got up a few moments yesterday in a chair, without feeling too tired, and Dr. Sr. having found that my old heart had regained its normal appearance, I think that "his majesty my liver" will taste good not to be a fool. Yet it was he who played another naughty trick by refusing to absorb the necessary medicines to his neighbour – sad carcass. .
...The great Georges, after a gentle explanation with Marcel, has regained this one of admirable flexibility, and the principle of his return by the end of the year is adopted. So he will be at the office. The payments that remain to be made continue with millions who deposit in frozen credits, alas. There are only a dozen left to touch that must be paid in one month. The rest will look at our diplomats...
...our old tantine has resumed her habits and her music, she ages smoothly. Robert returns from England with his wife, business trip, and I suppose her sacred sister continues her "blamist" elubrations...
Paris23October1937
..we are very sorry, my dear children that our letters come so badly to you, I wrote to you every week, except that where I found myself with a liver attack I passed the pen to Simon....Will all this be lost too? It is not possible, but tell me so that I make a complaint to the Post Office, already this happened and the Director had said that the departure was carefully monitored for Argentina. I would not be far from believing that an indelicate employee finds it good to own the unobjected stamps to sell them. We live in a time when probity is more than a word for many.
I often talk about your little ones with the childhood friend...
ParisSaturday, 30 October1937
......I have good news from Vierville, poor Pompon left in fallow by the care of the brave Leterrier; it was sold to Bayeux for the butcher's... sad! I would have liked him to end his days as a invalid at home. He hasn't yet replaced it, I think it will be a small horse that we can tie up without your elder crying out. You must tell my little ones that when they come next year, we will go for a walk in Nany's car....
Parissaturday, 1937
... we did not receive your letters that the Antares carried away – poor people!
...This autumn is quite mild, and fortunately because we have been without a calorific system for 3 days, the boiler required a replacement, we could have notified earlier, because we have been heated for just 3 weeks....
....youth is working hard, our great Francis is putting himself at the head of his class for science, and my faith the great Phil follows rather close his cadet, ...JP is in the very good average......he now takes d'escrime lessons, which has become obligatory for l'X while riding is excluded from it.ir In short, we are very satisfied with our 4 boys; to reward them we organized at Aunt Suzon, who is delighted to give shelter to the youth, a meeting of about 20 young men and girls who will come dancing and tasting from 3 to 7 tomorrow afternoon. It will celebrate the 19th and 16th years of Phil and François, who follow each other closely for their birthday. With our boys, it is the new generation of your friends, my dear children, who are paying the price for the invitations (because there will be no parents except Mrs Cordelle) and you would probably recognize, my Jean, Laure and Lépinay, the 2 daughters of Renée, as pretty as their mother, especially the second, it's also "the Peaper" or rather Antoinette Dupuis, a charming little girl of 17 years – etc. – the time passes. My two boys are very obliged to have kindly introduced them to the first rhythms of the dance, and they have the idea of giving them to heart. Old Nany will only be able to help with all this excitement, she's getting better and getting up now for lunch on a chair, then spend the afternoon with her daughters. Knitting . I emphasize the word that gives it, because it is good sign to see me resume an activity....
.. ..our school children had 3 days off to go skating and even go to the pool.era is in the open air, the 2nd Heated, we do what we can in Paris, and these big boys there dream only wounds and bumps. ...
...I think your new occupations, my John, are preventing your worldly outings, but Maine will understand, I'm sure, that the duty is there, and that after a good and long day of work, he is allowed to suck his slippers – I know what it is on.
Good news of Georges who came home by a small boat that makes the Dalmatian coast, Ragusa (Dubrovnik), Spalatu (Split?), Cattaro's mouths (Kotor)It took him another day, but it is not so much a rush to return to Piraeus, where he has nothing more to do than to wait for the good will of payment from the Greeks, these have still paid 5 million, there remains 12 million to pay. Georges pointed out to Marcel that this inactivity is above his strength... his return which is in principle fixed for the end of the year.
I think I told you that we are working seriously in the office to establish the pension scheme. It seems that these gentlemen are willing to make a good gesture for former employees, the project is interesting, we would talk about 30 to 40,000 for former directors, women would be given a retirement or a sum paid at once. Simon will tell you better (but keep it secret) because I see the days and date of my dear daughter's departure coming! The installation of my boys at Mrs Cordelle will soon be too, it is a grief – a real one – for me to be unable to finish my task, but I know now that it is exceeding my strength – sad carcass!
Parissaturday3 Nov.37
...the parade of November 11......all our great boys joined a group of comrades to greet the army, as it was appropriate. The mothers accompanied the two young people. There was only old Nany who bit her brake in her bed......To say all, the demonstration of Nov 11. It was splendid, not a false note, it would have been quickly repressed, I believe, and Brichambaud told us that at the windows of the Popular (the Blum newspaper) installed in a private hotel of the Champs-Elysées, many "France to the French" and by arms with extended hands, the spectators of the so-called windows responded with applause. Catholic associations To such an extent that our great prelates and the pope himself are told, our priests advise us the greatest mistrust, and there is a reason for this. It is certain that we have felt the wind passing and that our government no longer gives up so willingly to the left, industrialists are rebroadening to the new instructions of their staff, some of which are tired of the authority of the delegates of the CGT.These are not the cream of the working class, but very often people who have dealt with justice...... and I am not surprised, alas! John, from the article of the Prensa that you had the right thought to send. We deserve this appreciation of foreigners who is very disastrous for us, we should have a translation of it in our home, perhaps it would be good for us. Unfortunately our demagogues fool their listeners, I do not think that the great levelling from below or a famous acquisition.
...God knows if the Parisians came in many....the Champs-Elysées were black, it seems.era The paratroopers in big trucks, the officer All in whitestanding at the front of the truck, all this comforts, and these days the "socialos" will only stand well.
...the old Nany is sharking, it's not a lack of drugs and stings, (I have legs like skimmers) but Dr. Artaud has put himself in the head to get me out of this bad step, he always comes twice a week, also devoted and assisted by my two dear daughters... and the brave Martha who puts a real dedication to treating me.
Our boys work very well after being a lot of fun on Sunday morning at Aunt Suzon. The proximity of the joys allowed me to go and take a look at their debates from time to time, and I must compliment the dance teacher, whose two students are given to heart. I am amazed at their progress, especially the great Francis who was refractory last year to this kind of sport and that the musical ear helps to rhythmize the dance. J The Dupuis, and this is Gabriel Dessus, who had been energetically refused to follow the example given, but decided to open his apartment to the dancers.
Saturday 20Nov.1937
...it was so beautiful yesterday that my dear girls decided to trade for the 1era when her dressing gown for a short dress; (which had not happened to him in 2 months) to go for a "wood ride" by car. ...... I came home without being tired and began to believe that I would definitely get away with it.
...it's in a few days that my two dear residents emigrate to their good mother. They will continue to have their lunch here, as long as their mom is in Paris.... These little ones are strong and interesting, we were the best friends in the world, and the neck quartet is becoming legendary, even in Janson, they are only called that. Finally we will see them at lunch every Thursday and Sunday, and whenever they can, they know that their arrival from Lamballe will always be a ray of sunshine.
...the two sisters are excited about elegance, and our Simon is preparing, alas! her departure, in 15 days she will be at sea. It was good to be close together!... and I must think of the poor loneman of l'avenida Pellegrini to not dare complain about this departure. To tell the truth I hardly believed that Simon would accompany his sons this year, this arrival was a very sweet surprise.
...We're going to start out on new hopes, my good children, by making plans on your journey. From what you say, my John, the one from Maine and your little ones is more certain than yours. What would I say? I know too much about what the situation requires of sacrifices to not understand, but I want to keep hope...
...the quartet of the greats speaks a lot about creating a more acceptable corner than the Club to vangle all their stuff there, and I promised to find them a place in one of the barns. They are no longer at the age of going to make sand pâtés, and I like to see them busy with their tools, than to see them all the time on the roads, or to do the beautiful half naked in front of the Dryades (!) on the beach.
...so far I was not getting anyone except tantine, Mrs Cordelle who came to see her children......it was horribly tiring to talk at length. Dr claims that the enormous fatigue I had felt had influenced my poor meninges...
...Flondrians left for Stang Ar Lin, he wrote, but by the train. It says a lot about his condition. I tormented him this summer to get a driver, he always said: "When I can't drive, I won't have any more car."
...Georges Chedal, who gradually receives the rest of what he is owed. He would like to give out before the arrival of the Constipated who must arrive from Persia on 8th day
Saturday, November 27, 1937Paris
...I felt stronger day by day, I came out in a nice sun, we went to admire the lawns of Bagatelle...... there was almost no one, we could believe ourselves at home......I came back delighted with our getaway and not a bit tired, although I walked to Simon's arm.So yesterday, in the absence of my two daughters parties..., and accompanied by d'Yves, my little companion, I wanted to try out my independence and together we went to the next market to shop. When I got home, I came across my two daughters who raised their arms in the air... that's what life is like, I'm not allowed to take a step without asking permission! Believe me, if Nany gets back on his head, it's better. I won't go out today, but it's because there's a terrible fog.
...You must know that the departure of the Formose is remote by 4 days, it is selfishly with the smile that I learned the news, but I think that poor great John will be very sorry to spend his day without his own...
....I have finally concluded in writing with Collières the purchase of the beach lot, but he held the dracée high, and I abandoned all the top of the cliff to settle for a plot of 8m from the facades by 20m deep. He wanted 30,000F at all, I didn't have that to spend there, and what I'm taking will cost me 15,000F. It's expensive the meter but you will be installed there forever and the land for sale has become nonexistent, unless go near St Laurent, which is far away for the little legs...and the old ones!
...Having been very busy organizing a concert in which Suzon and Simon went to attend, and who had a great success... 84 years! It's beautiful.Robert phoned me yesterday and I have to see them these days, I am touched by all this friendship...
...I am not talking about the history of France, the history of the Cagoulards fills our newspapers; we certainly have around us people who are part of it, it was a kind of barrier to the communist putsch always possible, and the lack of authority of our government is the cause of all these plots. It was said that each street had its house designated to house a machine gun in case of a revolution. This animal is very bad, when it is attacked it has to be defended. You must have read that the Count of Paris had gone to Switzerland where he had met some aficionados at the castle of Versoix. It is the castle of Madame de Pierres, for a long time to sell and uninhabited who had been praised by the royalists. Mrs de Pierres et al. are supporters of it, and do not hide from it any more, they are right, you must have the courage of your opinion. You will also read that our Minister of Finance refused to extend the credits of an exaggerated increase in officials, and which the House supported him. I am very quiet for the Senate, Caillaux has the hard tooth, he will not give up – he is the chairman of the Finance Committee – the confederation of officials, who so far had held the head of the Chautemps Council (The Blum Ministry of the Popular Front has been replaced, but since when?) And the building contractors have meant that they want to keep their hiring and removal rights intact on their workers. A little will is finally coming out! And the show closes without much hope of reopening next year, I think; for it would still take hundreds of millions for that; and then the people around it have enough. Hersent, whose hotel touches the buildings of the parachute, roller coasters, etc., they can no longer rest at night for several months, it's charming.
...the citizen Jean-Louis seems to me full of ideas and Jean-Pierre claims it as one of his own...
Paris4Xbre1937
... I feel stronger and more fit day by day, and I walk like a policeman in the apartment, but there's not yet a question of going shopping, and I have to settle for a little ride to the woods when time permits. Time is not much better...... Simon is going to be going at the right time..I'm gonna miss her, my dear daughter, and this charming little Yves, we both do a very good cleaning, and the fresh laughs put a happy animation in the house.
You can't do better to help me with this separation than tell me about your arrival in qq6 months! There's just time to make arrangements, and get back to it completely, so that we can go to Le Havre to pick you up. I hope we will meet there with Good Mom and Good Dad, and together we will take the way back to the old house, where I'll be so happy to welcome you all. The plan to sign to your parents is from a distance, little Maine, and I even talked to your mom. I think you'll all be in our little winter apartment, it's not very spacious, but it's convenient, with large wardrobes, you'll be well grouped: your parents in the blue room, where there is a large bed, you in the old bedroom of Jean now called yellow, because of his new paper whose color is full of sun, your friend; the 2 little ones in the small living room, there are 2 washbasins with running water; the small staircase nearby that allows the easy fallolades out, or better climb of the big boys' room. A shame, my John, that you can't come at the same time... ... with the current orientation of your future, and delivered to the assumptions.
Simon who had lunch Monday at the Gilberts' with the Claudons, said that Gilbert had himself Talking about the great Jean coming back... ..it seems that most of your work is going to be in May-June? It makes me dream about your trip, but I don't dare complain, too happy to see you. As for the extension of Maine's stay until March 1939, it seems to me to be a long separation for the good housekeeping you are. Believe me, we always have time to be separated, my dear children...
....our big boys are working very well, we celebrated, ahead of time, Michel's 15th birthday. There was a dinner with the boys of Marchand, Puyreux de Fiennes, and Lapis, at Aunt Suzon (the mothers were eating at my house) and this happy band finished the evening at the cinema. The exit from Lamballe's house, with her seven great boys, was not silent, I assure you. How good this cheerfulness! even though it is a little too noisy...
...We saw ...tantine with Robert and Claude. Robert struggles hard for his affairs, he is very pessimistic about the future of France, and left the PSF with a frakking, eager to see trample without progress, accusing de la Roque of stopping so many brave people tired of letting themselves lead by the reds. He no longer wants to do politics, but the Cagoulards were born of all these dissidents of the French Action and the PSF. The disclosure of the payments to Roque of nearly 200,000 F on secret funds, makes it feared that he had touched them only in order not to draw his troops, and not to oppose successive governments that... they have watered. This is disturbing and I am sorry for the denials that La Roque opposes the statements ... of Tardieu. This one is no more clean for this, his duty was to remain silent, but no one doubts that he has said the truth. Sad!
I have definitely acquiesced in the conditions of buying the beach land, our little ones will be able to spend good days on the sand and parents will contemplate them with their armchair. I intend to have surrounded the ground of a wall on which I will restore the fence of the old land, of the charcoals all around the enclosure, and even a driveway drawn in the middle by charcoals also. I will see this more closely at Easter, so that it is finished when you come.
…Same day 5 o'clock
...we have here the visit of your charming Nono who, coming from Reims, will devote us qq hours. I am happy to give you excellent news (she is pretty like a heart)...
A few manuscript words from Nono: "Great joy my great Maine to chatter on Rue de Lamballe with a very valiant Nany and Simone and Suzanne so delicious always – Thousand sweet kisses for you 4 of your old No. »

...here is our Simon and the charming Yves who have been stolen, my dear children, this has once again been the painful separation...
...his two great boys are in excellent condition and our neighbors too. Jean-Pierre has a figure of paper chewed, I do not know if it will be necessary to take him to the open air......Jean-Pierre has been Paris since August 15, working hard to remove the mention of his 2nd bacchot, without having only been able to rest one day. He was left on October 7 or 8, while the courses had been started for math spé for several days already, it is quite badly done this resumption of studies. Fortunately all our boys are working well.
...salt climate than summer in Rosario, when do you go to Riachuelo, little Maine? Certainly not before the parties that are better to spend with the family, Tia Mone will not be in time for Santa and I regret it well! How will you pass this to the little ones?. I think that Yves was informed by the Bison who lost his illusions...
...we lived in our sadness, Simon left France the day after a pretty strong storm, I wonder how the first days of travel went. I still have one word to say in Le Havre, she must be today in Lisbon, tomorrow in Casa. She did not warn your uncle Emile, we learned through Tantine, who has even one of the cousins Hausermann, who lives in the Family Circle, that the Feuilbois are installed in Fedallah, with André who is in a wood house, Simon does not care to see her, and Emile would certainly have warned her. She'll write a note to Emile de Casa.
Good news of Georges, who is receiving his last million; there are only 5 left to pay that he was promised for next week. Hersent He is in Piraeus, and Georges assures that he will be here very quickly, perhaps not for the holidays, but little less, he has well indicated his will to Marcel who had to submit to it. Here is one I remember, his brother is more understanding, after giving Simon the best assurances of their return next year, he apparently maintained the brave Hébert who phoned by sending a sound to your elder. It also reminds me that he asked for your news and added "they are very quiet the Hausermann". Do not neglect them, they were faithful friends....
...Bravo for the skates of our Jean-Paul, more adept than his father, and I expect a resounding fall for the younger man. What kind of guy Simon tells me is you!...I expect everything!
Bros must have come back to bets, but we haven't seen him yet. He's better than in Shang Hai where he kills himself by thousands.
Yeah, I think the Roque hit the secret fund, for his party , not for him, but he was accused now of being muzzled and prevented from walking against the government !! His trial and that of the Cagolars disappear in front of the crimes of the St Cloud's booch ! 5 crimes in 5 months !!!
Friday 17th Xbre1937
I am writing to you today, my dear children, I would not have time to do it in the morning; we must be at 9 a.m. in a clinic on the street of Turin where we will rid our Michou of a small taie that would threaten the eye if we were not advised. No gravity for this operation, which requires only a short anesthesia of the eye so that he does not feel anything. No complication to fear if one observes qq precautions, the first of which will be to keep him blindfolded for 24 hours, this is the reason that will make us keep him at the clinic until the next Sunday; After that, with a bandage on the operated eye; he can gag at his ease, after 4 to 5 days, the stitches will be removed, and it will appear only by a little redness which will gradually disappear, but it is necessary that during these 10 days, he does not read; therefore we take advantage of the holidays so that he is well plumbed in the beginning of the year...
....I think that Mich helping, we will not move from Paris, it's a pity, these 8 days in the open air had the best influence on the 2nd and it becomes general that taking a few days to get back to health at this time of year, many people take half their leave (2 weeks) At Christmas... the people who never missed had to interrupt the tradition this year, their 2nd The two eardrums have just been pierced. It is made of dry l-otitis and must be treated seriously with warm air, as it is completely deaf to an ear.
I did a big extra this week – Sunday – o 2 boys in the cinema, in a nearby cinema, they had the great desire to see "Crime on the Maginot line" and it was nice, sometimes 6 months ago that I had seen such a assembly. For example, I was a little tired, and I slept like a strain. The film is good, insignificant plot, but a beautiful exhibition of the greatness and strength of our army, it was taken on the very line. a littleWhat it is.
...Bros and Thézou came to make us a long visit, I found it aged, marked by these 2 years of China. We had together an interesting conversation about Shang Hai that he left in flames, a horrible desolation; the Japanese make themselves odious to all Europeans whatever they are. They act in madness, and Bros foresees a catastrophe. He is there for 3 months and then no longer knows...
...I'm sending you... the letter I'm still in correspondence with Vierville's works, the little influence I can have is good to maintain, I still felt that I was listening.
Meanwhile, our Simon, with her little Yves, is in the middle of the Atlantic. We heard from Lisbon and Casa, but she doesn't seem to have had our letters, I'm sorry. She wasn't sick at all when she left France, she travels with a lot of German Jews who seem very unhappy. She knows the Doctor, quite old, Parisian, cultivated and kind, and exchanges qq sentences with a half-norman German (her mother is a Guizot) , who has a property in Auge, not far from Vierville, who was forced to leave Germany because of his opinions on Hitler. You will ask Simon to tell you what happened to Odette Bligny in Hamburg, where she had gone to learn German...
....I also see that you are still as duck as your mother was out there when it rained. The G. knew it well, "It rains," they said, "Mme Hausermann will come!" O the joy of walking without umbrella, but I confess that at that time I was a little bit feeling. Lady It's just like your 126mm water leaves me dreamy, it must have fallen off.
Saturday 4 hours. Good news from our Mich who was fortunately cleared this morning at 9:1/2 a.m. of his little eye-catching taie.
.....The old Flondrois who is now in Dr. Artaud's hands is also better after a series of suckers sacrificed, but he bores to perish in his apartment alone. It's the back of the single man's medal....
