LETTERS from NANY to his son JEAN HAUSERMANN,1935, excerpts, addressed to Toulon and then Rosario (Jean H. returns in February, Aunt Maine in June)

For memory: 1 franc of 1935 was worth about 4.3 F or 0.65 Eurode2004 - there is deflation - 8.4% -

ParisFridayaround the beginning of January 35 (to Aunt Maine, Toulon)

.....Seen tantine this morning, a little bit... because of the cocaine bites that we had to do to avoid any pain, but not suffering. She has a very small bandage with her eye – the operation consisted of applying three radium tips for which Robert had to sign a commitment of 10000F – their value – in case of loss. That makes the good aunt say that she is a very precious person – more than she believes the dear aunt!...

ParisWednesday morning(adressée à Tante Maine, à Toulon) qq jours après la précédente lettre

....the TSF block finally came back, but after 3 useless races and swapping the block that wasn't the one we had entrusted to them. Finally! Yesterday we spent our evening listening! All is right.

Tantine is better, I saw her yesterday, her surgeon has seen her radium (I guess he's reassured on his 10,000F) we'll take all of this away in a few days.

When we left Tantine's house, we spent 2 hours at the Antoine theatre, to see a small play by "Florestine" the pseudonym of the Countess of Rougé, the aunt of Guillemette de Pierres, it was through her that we had 2 tickets.

Wednesday, February 6,19355h(to Aunt Maine, Toulon)

...I had a good letter from your John, dated Monday morning in Barcelona...

...these dear missives did me good... and I really saw you on the dock I know, so alone! shaking your handkerchief for the one who was leaving.

....I wanted to write to Jean in Cadiz this morning, but I took it from the Transports office (Maritime Transport in Vapour). It wasn't the 9th but the 8th that the boat will stop there... it's stupid, I could have sent a word yesterday. I'll telegraph it......I'll write to him by plane in Dakar.

....Suzon starts to shake for the wedding, she is invited to lunch (there will be a big reception next) the girl is a love in her long dress of taffeta..... 150 People at the Bligny (I saw Odette, a friend of Simon's, last night) Suzon will make an appearance everywhere, but I would have a violent headache those two days! How it is. No! really I don't have the courage to make friends....

...I have you send 1 pound 1⁄2 of Cherbourg wool, it seems that it will be done for refund. It is usually, it is worth 42F per kilo. I have Simon's wool that I had bought this summer in Bayeux. I will bring it to you....

ParisMonday, 11 February1935(to Aunt Maine, Toulon)

…..(Jean-Louis) And here he is, in two months he'll be solid on his legs, and I see his dad's satisfaction here!

.......seen yesterday the Héberts, talk about you. Hébert did not think Sagne very high! so much the better. Chalon is in Madrid to conclude Tenerife, it would be Dorier, Georges' second, who would go there – but he is a Swiss and married to a Greek, shame!

ViervilleThursday, February 21, 1935

As you keep moving away, Jean, I came here, and in the old house so quiet I come to write... I'm very anxious to know if you got our letters plane in Dakar... You must not be far from BA anymore....

....I arrived here yesterday in good weather, a blue sky to make the Côte d'Azur jealous, but a dog wind to decorate all the oxen and the... of the canton. Of course I run like a poisoned rat, since, putting the nose everywhere that is excellent to stimulate the ardour of our people. Nothing special, but a lot of things to be developed, like for example the decisions to have one of our most beautiful poplars removed that the wind just slept on the pool. It fell so badly that it will take 6 to 8 horses to pull it out. I abandon it to the one who will make the cost. Leterrier and Dubois, whom I saw, promised me to take care of during my absence. Our little village is still quiet, but they are already calling for the municipal elections in May, I am afraid that some of the gallant sheep will slip into it and I regret that these gentlemen of the Senate will be drawn to the vote of women, I would not have given my voice to the dogs....

...Av. de Lamballe, the girl is still very excited about the beautiful wedding where she held a role, and which had taken place the day before. It was my very successful faith this service of honor of 8 girls uniformly dressed in white silk, crowned with coral, following alone The bride that her father accompanied first, her husband afterwards. Beautifully dressed in lamé d'argent, the bride, very beautiful, looked very great. No procession, but a crazy world that filled La Madeleine and was going upstairs on the stairs outside. The Figaro d'ahier relates the elegance of the bride and her honor service and your niece's name there, she was delicious and very little borrowed....

...we will be busy again with Suzon's journey to Piraeus, which is becoming more and more precise. I am very happy about this meeting, poor George did not steal it. It is a question of taking boys there during the Easter holidays, but the expense in fact scares Suzon (his trip to her is paid) especially when thinking about the next stay (1ir July - 1ir Seven.) of his two boys in England who will not be without their cost.. We have not yet told the boys so that if necessary there will be no disillusionment. They are delighted to leave in England.

...I always plan to spend a dozen days in Toulon to see Maine and the little ones again; as they will also go back...
...Georges has no idea how long he can still stay in Piraeus. The referees meet around March 15.

...We had Madeleine de Mons' visit to Paris, she arrived from Lisieux where she had been treated by Gillonne and François-Bernard, both suffering from diphtheria, the last very serious. Yet they had been snatched every two against this horrible disease !.. This leaves dream......the 2 convalescents are far away from school for 40 days.

So I didn't see anyone here, not even my parish priest who, it seems, doesn't derange, because there was a little theatrical evening given by the young men and girls of the village at the Casino (?) in favor of the school canteen. The teacher brought this morning a program whose cover is decorated with an watercolor representing the castle, not so bad that, my faith! I will send it to you in my next letter....

....I saw – I had asked him to come – Robert's cousin Thibaut. He seemed much more understanding than he did. He managed to see Louis Marin, one of the two government ministers of the current government (he replaced Tardieu suffering)The latter found that the PA had made a ignominy and had to write himself to Mourier. What will result? In any case the brave Thibaut has on his rent – which was only 18,000F – made enough savings to see coming for 1 1/2 or 2. I reported the fact to Robert who did not do so unfortunately. What poor man!

....The TSF of the boys works well, but it's absorbing to be at the headphones, quickly the speaker please.

...The sea seems angry, I will not go to see it, I have several things to see in the house. We put cider in bottles this morning, I would keep from offering it!I leave tomorrow morning, according to the usage I will carry butter, eggs, cream, rabbit, flowers and even a bread of the country and qq cakes of Jerrymann !..
....The peach trees are all pink.. we will not eat peaches this year, that's for sure, at the 1stera And there'll be, everything will be burned..

ParisMonday, 11 March 1935(to Aunt Maine, Toulon)

...We heard from Georges, who seems to be less aware of the Greek revolt than we are, because censorship is raging there with diligence. Athens is quite quiet, though very concerned about events – and for reasons! How will all this end? ?? I just met General Lepetit, who is a military attaché in Yugoslavia, and has spent a long time in Greece, where he knew your elders. He was part of the French Military Mission. He claims that all this will end up in muddy water and that these people are very careful not to hurt themselves. It is then furiously like the South American revolutions.
Suzon's journey still holds, she plans to leave around April 20th...

...... Is Jean-Louis finally in the trot?Impressions of the boys on Jean-Paul's entrance to the class "Poor kid! And he rejoices! It will pass, not counting that he starts early"...(No comment!)

ParisSaturday, March 16, 1935

......This is one more lesson for you to learn that if you leave Hersent without regret, your dear father's dedication will only have been used to make your bosses more demanding towards his son. As long as you have this great John as Director it will go, after that, ...veremos! I am sure that your long conversation with Uncle Georges Hersent did not please the other two with whom they hardly get along, yet it was the only one of the 4 Hersent who showed a great interest in your passage here. The old friend Flondrois claims that he's still the best, he told me often....
....all goes well here, after a long time of pain during the Greek insurrection where one knew on what foot to dance. Suzon remained without news; George knew about the revolution much less than we could fear the bombing of Athens. All is restored, fortunately, but the troublemakers are guilty of having set their country to fire and blood and of having ruined it a little more for the triumph of their personal ambition; The supermen acted like cowards, as soon as they saw the lost part, fleeing, - with the caisse - and letting their subordinates manage with the victors....

ParisFriday, March 29, 1935(to Jean and Simone at the end)

My Jean, I had this morning to my little lift Your good letter dated the previous Saturday, replacing this one with my 16! This rapid exchange of news is really a good thing, when you think that a few years ago it took 40 to 45 days to get so much. I can't borrow the " Santos Dumont" (Hydroplane that was making the Paris-Benovo-Aires connection?) The last time you were in the park, you'd be able to get a good look at the bird. I know that you were all in good health, happy to be all of you and chatting about the events of the last few months. At the end of the year, the roles will be reversed and your elders will bring you news of their journey...

......I am preparing to leave in Toulon; until just now I had to take the train from 8am on Monday to be in Toulon at around 9h1/2 – but a phone call from Thibault – Robert's cousin, announced that His Majesty Murier, Director of Public Assistance, will be welcoming us Tuesday morning, thanks to Louis Marin's intervention, the minister of state who was very kind in this case. Beneficiaries of Adolphe's legacy! It is not that we can think that the PA will come back on its decision, it is impossible given the judgments that have already been pronounced, but at least we can get the entrance of Robert and the Thibaut by a special tour in one of the houses of the city of Paris, of which some are of the last comfort and paying. The house of Sarcelles that I was seeing from Suzon is one, located in the middle of a beautiful park, new buildings, heated, etc. We were to see two others, one in Arcueil Cachan, but which are less well. On the other hand, thanks to Mr. Lot, who has pushed the notary and young Thibaut, who is not in a hurry to leave his apartment, there has been a decisive step in fact this week. The main heirs, as I said, have given up in time that legatees universal, the state will inherit and will have to serve the individual legatees the rents made to them by Adolphe, but on a pro rata basis, of course, of the present succession. The act was signed, and Mr. Lot is responsible for appointing a curator – a civil servant of the State who must finish settling the estate. I'll push a famous uf when it's all over.

...the news of Georges is good...but the arbitration of his case is started and does not go alone. Greeks are in the worst faith, which is nothing to surprise us because of the boom they have just made that had to scrape up to the last penny of their coffers. They must not be rushed to pay as little as possible of their debts. Poor George has drawn a very bad number there, and this is not without concern for their future. Good Suzon often crushes black....Happily their two boys seriously prepare their future....

......... The weather is very variable and it causes a lot of discomfort, when it is not worse, Micheline Collard is still very ill with a double otitis, she has just curled a mastoiditis and surgery, and she is not yet out of the way; Madame de Courcelles is very sick, relapsed with an infectious broncho-pneumonia. We cannot yet release her furs. Yet I read that in the midday it is a beautiful fix....

Aunt Suzon (to Jean-Louis) made a red coat with golden buttons, to which I matched a Basque beret. It's gonna be rolling in there... I will bring all this to Maine...The brave Bati ms brought a small package to wear in a convent in Rosario where one of her nieces is located. The poor girl, her daughter Yvonne, for whom they both had so much pain, left them to get married (?) with a hairdresser who was apparently worthless. As they opposed this marriage, she left by moving to the wooden bell, leaving them a little dry word. The poor people didn't deserve it, but it must be admitted that they raised their daughter with ideas far above their condition. It's always the same story.

.......We spent an hour at Mrs Cordelle's house, who gave me the last commissions for Rosario. She spoiled everyone...... The good Yvonne is sorry because the sale of the hats doesn't work. That hardly surprises everyone, fruscuous.

...There was at Mrs. Bousquet Guillemette de Pierres who told us that her brother-in-law of Loÿs was in no position and under the blow of a serious operation (biliary vesicle). Mr. de Pierre would like to leave Paris completely and that they all go to Louvières, but Guillemette is looking at this with fear and Go and find a situation! Which great gods?

_______________________

My SimonI'm sending him from Maine....what to do with a pair of panties for Yves......he's gonna look like a French "marinero." I hope he doesn't think about his heartache anymore; what a dirty country yours is in these seasonal changes, with these wet heats and sudden temperature differences. It's very trying for tired livers. Yes, I think that for your elders there will be a habit to take that will not first be without their tiredness. (Nany talks about the next installation of François and Michel in France, definitely, to continue their studies there from October 35). That's how we did it for the 2 boys who are getting away with their growth. For their installation here, we will see that when you arrive, but it would be a shame if you could not make them enjoy Vierville, only for 15 days when you arrived in France.

.....I'm leaving for Toulon on Tuesday night....I'll go back here before the Palms to leave Maine to close her trunks, and take the 3 children here and go to Vierville with them and Martha. Suzon will leave 2 or 3 days later for Athens...

Toulon6April1935

So here I am in Toulon, my Jean,...I found a very good mine to all your people, even a sick person who is no longer there, and that I go out every day in the good sun of the coast, pushing the brother into his carriage. For example this one he changed; no figure! he is always the kid with the Poulbot, with the hair hirsutes, but he treks and seeks to cause, interesting to everything, showing with his little finger the dogs; "Tote" he said, and the big boats which I taught him in no time to imitate the big siren. Very willing, sir, I plan on a few thunderstorms with Dad, but clever, with my little eyes and your mouth in the spot, good round cheeks. Nothing of the elegance of his elder who watches over his and with whom we have long conversations.

....I'll write to Simon, you'll find details about my interview with Murier, a real bully too. Nothing obtained for Robert and took care of him entering Sarcelles as soon as possible, if everything goes well he will have enough to pay his pension and even qq more.

ViervilleWednesday, April 17, 1935

...the boys spend their time in the attic riding their bicycles and the famous motor of the Touny, which, when putting a match on it, revealed itself as a scum!!
....Suzon is on the way out, she's taking the train tonight at 8:1/2 and will be in Athens at 11 am. The great George is not looking forward to it anymore... ...when they join, you will leave Toulon, my little one, and the end of the day will not end without you being far away....

....we found the good weather here on arrival, and it was an enchantment of the eyes that this spring....

Today, rain from the Diluvian, which will not allow for a bicycle ride of the boys, in Trevières, there were terrible muddy places this night and I was shaking a little for my old roof on the wood side. Before I arrived here, a waterspout made a hole of more than a square metre through the slates of Caumont that have been there for 2 or 3 centuries. Jeanne as a leading woman did everything she could to repair the disaster without waiting, but I can judge by the color of the new slates that sliced on our old gray roof that it was urgent to warn. We must wait for this from time to time!

ParisSaturday, 11May 1935

...the twin brother of the "S Santos Dumont" is at the point to undertake his useful and beautiful hike, so I hope that he will arrive in time for the 32 years of my Jean...
...I thought of you this last Thursday, following the happy arrival in Montevideo, ....the short crossing of the estuary......then it was Buenos Aires, the railway and Rosario, where you were expected so eagerly......the beautiful house ready...ah I would give good so that the television we made in Paris this week the 1ers practical tests at the TSF, to the point to see the arrival of the travellers !

...J-invites Suzon not to hurry back......they made a 5-day hike in Arcadia, on foot, on car as needed......They found everywhere the traces of the great French names whose representatives going to the Crusades had fixed themselves in Greece: Villehardouin, St Omer, Bruyères, Tremoil, etc...... she has a lot of fun to find in Greece where life is easy. If only these animals paid their debts! But arbitration progresses very slowly, one session every month – here's the 2nd Only! where we solve 2 or 3 questions – and there are 70! At this train I doubt Georges is leaving in September as he says!

....I saw some friends this week: Batifol, Blanche Duchemin, Tantine, the old Tonton, then tea at Madame Cordelle where I saw her very valiant old mom, Yvonne, Gillette, her husband (it was Saturday afternoon) , and the good Prouveur. He really sour, and there is what in the cavalier way he was asked to withdraw from Saunier Duval's where he had taken all his grades until that of Associate Director, after 38 years of work, and this without a generous gesture.
....Flondrians m'écrit de Stang Ar Lin to tell me that he will come to say goodbye before embarking on Normandy whose trials are continuing at this moment...

...all the good people, and even the others, have been obliged to fulfil their duty as a citizen, and my faith, the result is quite good. In our neighborhood, the socialist is beaten; in the 17th century, the socialists were forced to take part in the struggle.nd, Armand Massart was elected with a strong majority, 5,500 votes out of 6,000 voters. ......In Vierville 8 out of 10 outgoing municipal councillors are re-elected, Lebastard is in a squabble, ..... There were lists, manifestos, which had never been seen.

Paris1irJune

...I wonder where my letter plane sent to Rio went!I am sorry for this inexplicable delay and I will eventually believe that our post on Singer Street is at the mercy of qq communist....

... on my insistence, Suzon decided to only embark on the 7th for Marseille. The boat makes a nice economy, but it is not necessary to be fixed on the date of departure. The great Georges will find himself very alone after! and I really wonder when this will end! Here we talk about the restoration of the kingship in Greece after a plebiscite, it might be better than with all the current fantoches. In France this is not much better, we say our empty funds despite the borrowings and the National Lottery (this would seriously feed the budget), it is even claimed that the end of June is assured, but that after...it is unknown. This is the time that the deputies took to flank the ministry on the ground, because our ministers demanded full powers. Yesterday, as the noise had run from a new ministry with Blum, Auriol, Frossard, etc., the leagues alerted their supporters, I think that it is decided here not to let themselves be manipulated by the common front, but it would not then be without bloody reactions and it is terrible to think about it. We are worried on all sides. Blessed are those who roam on beautiful Normandy without concern. L-Illustration gives this week the details of this grand installation, what luxury! and it seems that this is not in keeping with all the current concerns and one wonders if the result will be proportional to the effort, Lebrun gave at the festival of Le Havre a lyrical speech where he says "Vogue Normandie, without regrets, without remorse "? and Gringoire to point out: probably this word is for the share of taxpayers in the construction of the super-ship. They say there's 2000 guests On board and the shareholders find her bad who haven't received any dividends in 5 or 6 years. Old Flondrois has gone away delighted, but he paid full place!
.......I had Mrs Cordelle's long visit......then Truss's, always sanctified with a huge cabas that she fills up to the edge when she comes to our neighborhood, which is one of the best markets in Paris, she says...

....The Tonton affair seems to be starting and I think it will be installed at the end of the month in Sarcelles, but it will have to be liquidated at the Family Circle, so I don't think I'm in Vierville until the 1st day of July, I regret it well, .....Leon méon however writes that the last colds have made b I'm afraid of the garden.

...I saw that my friend Dr.Brée was re-elected mayor of Trevières, with the good Mr. Pommier for 1ir This is important for the future of our countryside and our country. Everyone is beginning to see it.

Paris21June1935Friday

...here since yesterday, the barometer is getting hot, only! Until now we have had a rotten spring – Leon writes that hay is on the floor and rains -
...Suzon is actively preparing the departure of our boys who leave the 1ir July, one for Dieppe and Brighton, via Newhaven, the other for Le Havre and Wirelesscombe, via Southampton. It is likely that they will both return via South. by Cherbourg with one of the English ships that make South America; we will go to search them in car, and this would very little precede the arrival of our Argentineans, which prepares for us a very happy month of September.

....We think we'll leave on July 4 for Vierville after the boys left and Robert's installation in Sarcelles. I got along with the mover so that he can bring here some furniture that I want to save from the shipwreck. I'll put them in the cellar and in the maid room that I have at 7ndI tried to sell some business, and it will have to, but it will be sold 4 under a quiver. This is not the time to sell!! is it the time to buy?

...I've been talking about you with your friends Prange...they leave Paris, ....but it's not yet sure of its designation. He hopes Toulon, ...but all our boats go up to Brest and Cherbourg, because of the European tension and especially German. L'Admiral Bléry is in Brest with all the ships, and there is such a flood of sea families that we can no longer stay, even at the hotel....
.....There was also a Mrs. de Bray cousin of the Charmontel and niece of the Bray, of Valognes who inherited the Manor of Than!

.....We'll have tea tomorrow at Mrs Cordelle's and say goodbye until we find ourselves on some dock or station where we hope, with a beating heart, the arrival of five darling children! It's good already just to think about it.

....I know by Thérèse that his business – insurance – (Roger Busson's) I don't think so. What's going on in our poor France? Here. Nos The new ministry that has obtained full powers seems to want to arrive at wise savings. I am still sceptical; and I send you out of curiosity in a package of catalogues an anti-francaçonical newspaper that will show you that the most angry of our ministers against cumulation knows, if necessary, to accept it for him: I speak of Herriot. I also send you the number of "Solidarity Française" which was seized too late since our boys bought, with many others, in the streets....

...The C.I.C. also advises its customers that it is now happy to pay them 1% interest, notice to depositaries, is fortune.

...Good news from Georges, who is very hot and whose affairs are getting worse and worse, is a pity. Their lawyer – who is one of the d'Athens's friends – leaves them, feeling George, that arbitration will not be to their advantage; and as he was paid according to what he would get, it must be recognized that it smells bad. It is less and less certain that Georges can come on leave in September. I am more and more pleased that Suzon could have gone to Athens. Marcel Hersent is in Persia, he must feel the heat; Sagne, who has been there for several months, is urging her repatriation, his wife becoming neurasthenic, I wonder who they're going to send, provided it's not Georges!
...I'm very excited to have some new details on your recent installation, my good kids, and what pictures would be welcome, I'd be better placed. You alone. I'm not sure it's always the room that women like best.

Have you finished eating Tia Mone's oranges and mandarins? Are childhood friends always as intimate?

ViervilleFriday, July 5, 1935

... after having boarded at St Lazare station our 2 boys for England, one after the other, because they did not follow the same road "for crossing the Channel". Since Suzon received news of their good arrival...

...Our week was busy preparing apartment and trunks, moving the old uncle who settled down for several days before he could go to Sarcelles. ......he phoned since then and said he was very well, he has a good room, and as he had some words of introduction near qq residents, he had been very well received, and already engaged in parts of billiards or belot; this is quite what he needs.

....Tantine is in Ouistreham at the Massart where we will go to find her at the end of July, the Collards went to Portugal in car.

Brichambaut is appointed Commander of the Legion of Honour as a flight attendant. It's beautiful at his age; he has always been very active on this side, the more I think that on the street of London, that's at least what I suggested Mrs. Jean Hersent. Marcel returned to Athens from Persia, by plane. He managed to arrange things: Sagne stays there for 1 year with Dorier as second, the Italian partner was ousted and returned home, therefore remains the only Englishman. The Hersent doing the job.Read last week's illustration, she talks and gives pictures of the project. Suzon (and me!) is not angry that Georges does not go to Persia, ....

. . .I have seen Laterrier who came to tell me the avatars of the election, and Mr. Mayora asked to come to me tomorrow, it seems that since he was in the pinnacle, he has won in majesty. He is a good man, and he is a lot.

......The Bison wanders, alone, melancholy. She just left with Suzon to see a beautiful British plane, tourist, which swiped from the nose in a oats room behind Dubois, fortunately without harm for the airmen, but the plane is very badly set. (cf. a postcard of the time) He is guarded night and day by the gendarmes.

Your uncle Mark Saillard kindly provided a battery of 1era brand at 207F instead of 475F for the least. That makes my business nicely – Suzon wants to pay half...

...I had the right letter from my Simon....I feel the arrival, what a joy!

VersaillesThursday, July 18, 1935

...Georges did not get too hot, his vacation was still only at the project stage, ....from August 10 to Sept 10. when the arbitration commission would take his own. He did not want to go away from Greece at any price if they did not separate, knowing very well that on any occasion an unexpected hare would be raised. In this way he would see very little boys and not at all our Argentineans; what is really annoying....

....The roses, almost all climbing, are ploughed under the weight of the roses, thousands , from white to the brightest red, and the range of roses. You would be at your business, little Maine, and Suzon is also! Old Leon exults to this success, because he is his, I did not have to buy a single rose, everything was done by him. Your dear Father would be wildly happy to feast his eyes in this way! As a practical woman – it must be – I watch over the vegetable garden and the top Jeanne is unparalleled. So that at the bottom this couple without protocol completes for the good of our garden and our table.

...Collars is not there yet, he is part of the Cross of Feu, and was alerted to stand ready to come to Paris. Fortunately on 14 July he held himself in good order. The parade of the army in the morning was superb and very acclaimed, that of the Cross of Fire which, at the request of the government itself, revived the flame, was in the words of all those who saw a beautiful demonstration of order and force very impressive that brought out the pagaye of the popular front; It is difficult to believe that a Duchess of Grammont, Countess of Clermont-Tonnerre followed the red flag of Cot and Frot, but it is true that the images of the Morning will give you a little idea of both groups. This morning, the Council of Ministers issued us the famous decrees, each one takes on its own account, and that is good since we must help France. It was celebrated here on the day of the national feast, by a very small parade ......

The Than mansion is inhabited this year by a household, engineer, and its 7 children. The villas open one after the other, but there are significantly fewer unwanted Parisians this year. We feel strongly the crisis; the products of the countryside continue to fall, we say that the milk taken by the dairies is paid 0.30F; it is true that here we are sold 0,80F. The butter was worth 2F50 this week in Brittany, it is worth 4F. We can really live here in good standing, and that's what we do. So don't worry, John, and thank you both for your offer, I won't draw from your reserves, my dear children, and if I give up the idea of planned travel, it will be without regret, since it is necessary. It is quite obvious that Vierville costs me, you have seen my accounts, but it is not, is not, to abandon it. I also don't want to take on my capital, it has been sufficiently touched by the crisis; therefore remains wisdom, I will use it and I hope to close my budget despite everything.

Friday, 19 July

....Suzon has a small flow caused by a tooth desage that cannot penetrate, for lack of space – like Dad – our journey (in Cherbourg) So it's over.

...the new accusers are at the car, which walks like an ace, so. ....I wrote to your uncle Marc to thank him...

...the village festival is having trouble getting on the road. It's Guignard son, now a medical student, who is the president of the village....

Vierville24 Aug. 1935Saturday

...I received 2 dispatches from Rosario announcing their departure... I immediately communicated the good news to Mrs Cordelle, as eager as I did to know, and we made an appointment for September 16 in Le Havre, (she is right now in Besançon)
.....Georges arrived here at 2:00 am with Suzon who had been looking for him in Paris at the Orient Express.......He left just now for Geneva where he must see one of his Greek lawyers who spent 2 days there. J-I pushed our Suzon to accompany him, and it was not long to decide it; they will be in Chamonix tomorrow to see Mont Blanc, from there to go to Geneva by car, they will sleep there tomorrow evening, Georges will see his Greek, back by Lausanne, Tuesday morning in Paris – 7:45 pm – just time to change station to arrive here at 2:00 pm. They both want to leave Wednesday morning with the "young" Pépta for Cherbourg where our 2 boys have to arrive around 4am on the Berengaria – a beautiful liner from the CunardLine going to New York and which they will have taken to Southampton.
....I'm thinking about our 4 big boys and Jean Cordelle, making us pour kilos of soda on tennis, there's no more grass but there's a good need for a roll before it's done. These shorts are good and elastic, but how delicate to maintain and don't know anything, my Jean, to propose me that is not too expensive. : Phil says he played on courses covered with cork agglomerated? There's also the brick crushed and I might be able to see at the brickworks in Lison what it is – Veremos!

George arrived in excellent health ... for 20 days. It's not much, it's better than nothing. In short, his arbitration business seems to be better than you could think. They already have a win for qq million francs and this is not over. I hope that these 11 years of Greece will not be unproductive for your elder. veryNicely received by Marcel who was leaving for La Baule.
...he saw Chalon in the study office. It seems that we are working on some new projects, the work of Tenerife and that of Persia (with Sagne and Dorier) take shape, we have a fairly big job at Bizerte with the repair of the piers; Marcel Hersent hopes that the work of Persia has been interested in an English group that has big work in Egypt – what an illusion!

....the day last Sunday that was the one of the party was very lively, it was going on at home as well as in the field... as usual; in thanks our brave people came, mayor in mind (that's Dubois, my farmer) make me a little aubade with the music coming from Bayeux, and in the evening to resume a habit lost since the death of your dear Father the retreat with torches made the turn of the house, always preceded by the music, fireworks in the fairground with Bengal fires under the trees of the wood, which was pretty. Not a lot of shops, rides and lotteries with noisy orchestras and usual games and many people and gaiety "but no one drunk "I was reminded of a good boy.

In the pool room we had prepared a good snack, which was very appreciated by our friends Collières, de Mons, de Pierres, Batifol (including l'abbé - seminarist Jean Batifol - who has been wearing a bra since Easter, which I had never seen so much training. All the sandwiches and cakes were eaten, in the evening we gathered again the house for the night party, our little ones are given to heart, and I see here what it would have been if all my darlings had been there. It's equal, I wasn't upset that all this nearness was over.

In the midst of all these agitations I continued to maintain our old Vierville, and I had the outside of Leon's house painted and made them put the electricity (2 lamps with meter) for their 10 years of presence at home. I also intended to highlight this with qq tickets for the example, at the end of our holiday. The thing is not so common that it deserves to be encouraged, even at the price of a small sacrifice on my part. Are you not in my opinion?

I had to paint the beach cabin, providing the painting, bought in Paris, I had a painter and his brother who I paid on time and who worked fast and well. They also cleaned and re-veiled the oak doors of the entrance, very blackened by successive layers of varnish, then I had your old room, my Jean, re-painted with the yellow paper attached; the canvas that covered the walls was very dirty and I had this paper very good in Paris (4F50 the 8 meter roll). I also had the opportunity to have a sink, which is now placed in place of the cabinet, which is placed in the sink where the toilet was, it gives an extraordinary place. The running water was taken very easily, below the kitchen, the dirty waters are also evacuated by the kitchen, which avoids a pipe along the house, always very bad. All this did not cost much, the work of the sink was done by Dagubert.

Next year, if I can, I'll have a sink in the yellow room on the second floor.nd, evacuation in the corner of the turret on the east side of the house, I will leave the table as it is, and have the sink placed on the right side of the door, upon entering. This will require very little work, water coming from the attic. I will also repaint the inside of the house of Leon...projects! ...still !

The mason has been working since yesterday on the repair of the reinforced cement fences, often damaged by the horns of these big and beautiful cows from the grasses of Laterrier. Our people are baffling this this week. It will only be necessary to re-turn the kiosk (part of which was removed by a blow of wind – another repair), the door of the vegetable garden, and to give a shot of paint at the gate of the Pompon field, so that the old house is ready to spend the winter without any damage. The roof was carefully made in July. I'm telling you all this, my dear children, to keep you informed and I must be bored with these little stories.

....The government is making commendable efforts to lower the price of life; butchers and carcutters, grocers asked by the Prefects, are taking a fall, it was time; you had to see that rents were down by one tenth. It's a 1000F business for me, it's good to take. But the terrible days of Brest and Toulon are a famous warning, and it doesn't seem to be reacting firmly against the band that led the jerk. I wrote to your mom, little Maine, immediately; Fortunately they were all safe and to St. Anne, but I thought of you, my little one, who had to spend a few days worried.
I am sending you an article from the Colonel de La Roque, published in the last newspaper of the Fire Cross. It seems to be very fearful that these brave people will be gathered among the popular front, and it is said that the guvt. rests squarely on their formation.

I'm also sending you an article on the Verdon in a financial paper. I like the photo with the Champlain at dock! Only - I'm not.

...Our Simon has certainly left without much joy, it is the end of their good family life in Rosario. Their journey and stay in France will be very saddened..When will they meet together and where?

Viervillesonday, August 31, 1935

......... (Suzon and Georges) They were able to put their project to work, travelling dare-dare, they arrived here at 121⁄2 pm, quickly swallowed their lunch and left half an hour later with Pépita. They arrived in Cherbourg by a short time; and came home the same evening. Our boys arrived brown and delighted, delighted with their English hobies, and their return to home.

...and during this time our Simon and his four men are sailing on the ocean. They were before yesterday in Rio....

....we had large showers that did the greatest good to our flowers....our fields had their grass changed into mats, and I saw the moment when, as in Greece, (it's this bad language of Georges who claims it) we would be forced to put green glasses to the good norman cows to give them the illusion of grazing fresh meadows....
....this week the mason has repaired the reinforced cement fences, I will have to make him re-make the wall of the pool badly damaged by the big poplar who fell down this winter. It is still a pretty big repair, I will take advantage of the presence of Georges to settle the case with the mason....

Friday, Sept 6, 1935

....I want my letter to go tonight to catch the mail that I'm suppose ! leaves tomorrow; because we are here badly informed about it......

...l-l-Flondrois arrived on Wednesday, without any trouble this time.....we were yesterday with the 2 lunch cars in Omonville and made the tour of La Hague that Georges did not know. He came back as excited as we did; the view of this bay d-Ecalgrain, of the St Martin's and the high cliffs of Jobourg did not disappoint anyone. We were back here for dinner, the "old lady" before Turzumel III, forced her to a wise slowness, that her driver accepted, I must say, with good grace. It's a meritorious thing to admit.Today the whole band went on foot to Colleville.

I've got the whole bottom of the pool to make it happen again, always the mischief of this devil poplar who is shot down there. With Georges, I was seeing this, and agreed with a mason of repair. Here I am again for 300F.

The hunt is open, a beautiful hare, probably pursued, has taken refuge near the vegetable garden where he will enjoy every night our cabbages. Dubois who came with his dogs did not manage to find him, but he sent me a beautiful rabbit of parker killed in the Costil where they are sweating, they say. I have left him the enjoyment...

Viervillesaturday 14 Sept. 1935

...Nothing about you this week, my good children, in our bled, I don't know anything about the mails, no more about those who come from BA or go back there, which is why yesterday I was really starting to be surprised not to say any more, not receiving any news of our travelers who should have been 12 in Casa.... ...Finally I had a laconic dispatch signed Cordelle, sent yesterday at 6 o'clock: "well arrived Casa" did it come to pass? I've probably telegraphed the loaders in Le Havre who have just answered me by the same way "Jamaica expected to have on the 18th at night" so it's going back to their arrival...... so I won't leave Monday...... but only Wednesday morning at 7 am, I'll have lunch in Le Havre, where I have to meet Mrs Cordelle, and we'll go on the pier waiting for our travelers. I guess they're starting to find the time, it's always like that when we get close to the goal....

....Your elders intend to buy 2 or 3 shares of Rosario. After Flondrois the trial that the Company has just won will put some very interesting sums in the caisses.. but that all remains between us above all! Always from Flondrois: he believes that the liquidation of the Port will last several years before the distribution of the reserves, perhaps until 1950!!The brave friend left Monday morning. We took a last walk with the 2 cars to Port-Bail, not far from Carteret....

.....we have developed the little apartment that Simon will occupy with Jean and Yves. Mrs Cordelle will lie in your old room, my Jean; the four boys gathered up there will be like fish in the water.....

....The weather was very variable, this week, it was the high tides of September, we were very busy with lobsters and pink shrimp at reasonable prices, which had not happened in a long time, because all the guests of the beach, hotels and even villas have fled.

... seen our friends from Mons, Collières, Batifol, from Heudrie, whose young households arrived from Morocco, by Spain, by car, also the Pierres, Guy de Loÿs is a friend for our boys. Also seen the Brunvilles.

I knew by my parish priest that the inhabitants of the Goussencourt mansion - Than-manor(an engineer, his wife and their 7 children) knew the Cordelle; how we met!

The events of the week are the renewal of the "old lady"'s youth through a painting of a new brand that plays the enamel to scream; if she did not, say the boys, her form of "chuckle" (o youth!) would be transformed.

The Bison finally took her flight on one of the little bikes, a serious affair, she told her comrade Jean-Paul. The big brothers have refurbishing the four bikes, the two little ones and those of your sisters, my John, a little bit damaged since they used them for them. They have dismantled them, astride them, repainted them, they wait more than the necks to go to war...In fact, these projects, never the 10 or 12 days that remain to be spent here will suffice to do everything....

Suzon thinks he'll go out on guard with his maid around the 26th for Paris. The Cordelles would follow around the 30th with all the children, and I'd stay two or three days to close the house.

.....we enjoy succulent pears, it's the Williams time and our trees are loaded in the spacer. There is something to do in the village; we must see the eyes of the little ones to whom we wear them.

...Suzon and Georges offered lunch to the old uncle they had brought to Paris. He is always happy with his fate.

Tantine wrote that she was bored in Brittany and that she returned to Paris on 23rd with Micheline. She must be well isolated in her corner where there is no one to see... and no piano.

Vierville, Friday 20 Sept. 1935

......your elders arrived on Wednesday 18At about 4am in the afternoon, with 24 hours late, due, probably at a prolonged stopover in Casa, that a strong storm which all the newspapers have been talking about since Tuesday. Since Tuesday noon I was in Le Havre, having left Vierville in the morning at 7h1/2. J-y had found Mrs Cordelle and we were contemplating the rough, covered with foam, the waves were constantly sweeping the piers of the great harbour!! The expected boat finally announced on Wednesday 18 at about 10 a.m., and at 2 o'clock it made a triumphal entrance between two black jetties that were waiting for the exit of Normandy (which did not come out). L'accosage at the dock Blot asked for 2 good hours, as the ressac and the wind violence acted on the large stable yet well loaded ship. It had been impossible to open the usual airlock as we feared to damage the doors always for the same reason; but we were all this long time close enough to see us first, talking to us. Then kiss us when the bridge was down.

......We had to sleep in Le Havre that we left yesterday morning at 8 o'clock, to be in Bayeux at 12 o'clock. Suzon and the three little ones were waiting for us with the old Lady; under a beating rain, because there were terrible grains between the blows that stopped only that night. And now it's the good meeting in the old house rejuvenated with so many screams, and unfortunately Mrs Cordelle had to leave last night, the poor woman, called by dispatch near her old mother, remained alone in Besançon with a servant, the Dupuis being on car tour in the midday, and that a heart attack due to indigestion was terrifying. The news received earlier is more reassuring, but Mrs Feige is 88 years old and the danger is not entirely conjured.

...Your elders are doing very well, the sea air has sunk them.......Jean is superb, almost unrecognizable, the 3 boys well grown but I found our Simon very weighty. She feels perfectly well however, and Jean m

....Since yesterday, we have been moving into the small apartment in the area, unpacking the trunks, long chats, so much happiness at once! ...... we don't tire of talking about you four....Our boys don't leave, we get out of the bath, (it's not hot) and they asked for sons just now to mount the TSF antenna. The two sisters are chatting......Jean wrote in Father's office. He has already called the "little Louis" also says "tread tap". (It's probably about Benezeth. He was confirmed to leave Gilbert. (Hersent)......This one will be at BA when you receive this letter, and John even wonders if he will go to Rosario...

....Good news of Georges who arrived in Piraeus without any trouble and took up his lonely life without any training...

Vierville – Friday 27 Sept. 35

...Simon writing to you at length, I will not do it this week, but I intend to catch up next week, before returning to Paris, exactly in 8 days. Suzon has already left with his maid to prepare the beds of the bulk of the troupe who leaves on Monday. I stay behind guard, with Tatou, to finish putting the covers. .... ....the temperature remains very soft, which allows the children to enjoy until the last moment of the good air; But it already feels like the start, we have climbed the canoe, closed the shutters of the beach house, disassembled the small motor, which thanks to the generosity of Uncle Jean was mounted on its He gave him some new tyres, so that's the car he dreamed of, and he blessed the Touny who made it so fun, it was always a joy to drive without effort!

...Simon is still on your quartet......I know your pretty house in every corner, and all the towers "del bandito" that seems a favorite for negation and pots. Everyone takes his pleasure where he finds it. My Jean-Paul is always very wise! so that Englishman Tonazzi will accept to load it! Here the two little ones do not leave, they are quite a bit of a bit but it is still affection, the great occupation consists of looking for browns from India that already fall. What a pity to be able to stay here, it would do the greatest good to the 3 boys who have just arrived. It's only necessary to see their appetite, buttered tartines are falling for their greatest good, in their stomach. Yves needs it to replenish himself....

Thursday, 3 Oct 1935(from Vierville)

....last letter I'm writing to you from Vierville......the big part of the company that left Vierville Monday morning September 30...... we have a lot of plans to come back here for Christmas as last year...... our little corner is cozy, and I've settled in the 2 connecting rooms of the 2nd.nd floor a small wood stove that will stretch the atmosphere for our 4 boys whose blood is young and hot...

....A good letter from Simon tells me that their installation is done at best thanks to the good Suzon who had developed everything, yet it is not a small matter to set up 6 people, but we tightened up.. with affection and everything is said. Boys must start tomorrow the classes. I wonder what this will give for your 2 youngest nephews, a little shy and who will obviously be disassembled at the first apostrophe, yet the 2 elders have already warned them not to do it......Jean Cordelle envisages moreover as very probable the obligation for Francis to repeat his 1era He would prefer to the second..Veremos! They all went in good health, we had to see the hecatombe of well-buttered tartines (not mother-in-law's tartines!) that we swallowed up at the snack, even Yves, quite a chipotier, he was still eating.ir after the bell blow to fall in the dining room (the memory that I have, is that above all it was not necessary to risk being late)...

....the two boys brought back from England where they did a lot of sports, biceps that make Simon want to his sons. Everything will be settled...;...

...I didn't have to tell you that the house wasn't very well after Monday's departure, especially since it was raining for two days. It had to be taken back from the attic to the cellar; helped by the brave Maria, Tattoo and I put in order and astified everywhere, it must be before abandoning the old house with the moisture of Normandy, so that she keeps her usual air of freshness as everyone comes to her. Do they not doubtless care for their own.

Revised all our friends who came to say goodbye to me, of Mons, of Pierres, ...the Marquise... accompanied by the Marquis and his 2 daughters, Sabine de Loÿs is very beautiful......– our parish priest; the Collières have joined Lisieux, he is still unoccupied....

Revealed with Simon and Jean the old Than mansion, a little melancholy by these autumn days, and by this very way full of charm.

Because it's quite autumn and we have to prepare winter, it rains heavy, and the hoofs and boots are of the utmost rigour. The pears are falling down and the apples too, we will have to ship all this. At Vignet we will have enough to make our cider supply, without any more, and yet the promises of spring were splendid. A blow of mist is the reason.

I've already done my rounds in all The attic, re-examined with Jeanne and Leon the gardens and the wood, gave my instructions for winter: trees to be cut in the wood and the Vignet, improvements of the soil, fertilizers to sow, care for fruit trees, cuttings of the greenhouse, and chassis, while rainy days will have to be used for storage or repairs... They will not do everything, it would be impossible; but I say this, my dear children, so that you know for a later time.
With my farmers (Leterrier and Dubois) I started curing the herbage pond of the Wood. They would provide the couplers, horses and cars with 1 or 2 men, I would count the days of men, the vase removed would serve to fatten the 3 pieces that would be very well from this treatment. I had repaired all the water-drinking pans damaged by the large poplar that was left behind. For 400F If Dubois had not taken over the removal of the tree that had been thrown down, another poplar would have been cut down and threatened to ruin in about the same place. I did not have the barrier that was closing the way to the sea, one of the waterfront owners having work done, it is better to wait until the workers have finished, it will be for next year.

.....I leave tomorrow at 11 am to be in Paris at 5 am happy to meet the whole marmaille and the parents. I have seen so little again Simon and Jean. He leaves on Saturday in Besançon, he will return Monday with his mother. Mrs Feige is quite well, her 88 years were right again of this terrible heart attack, it's wonderful!

.....I gave our people the 50F you gave them for their 10 years of presence here, your brothers and sisters did so, I joined 500F with what I said, kissing Jeanne and shaking Leon's hand. The good people wept, they didn't know about this bounty, they took care of me to thank you very much.

I'm running away, it's 5 1/2, I still have my trunk to do. Don't leave us without news.

Jean Cordelle expects to leave before Simon – but don't tell him if he doesn't – it's because of the work....

19 Oct 1935Paris

....l-Autumn remains so sweet that we have taken back some lighter things and the male gente is circulating without coat; it also allows us to do a good walk around Paris...... We have re-opened the promenade of Versailles, my Jean; and on Thursday we were gathering chestnuts in the woods of St Cucufa, above the Malmaison. The 6 children filled their pockets and bags of their picking, which then played the role of dessert, which delighted them.
...our boys are already well taken in the atmosphere necessary for a good job and the result that follows. The 2 great swimmers with some difficulties in the homework of the next bacchot, because Kayser spares no means to succeed; he again showed it this year where he had 20 of 25 students presented at the various baccalaureates. It is said that Janson has 14%, the average is not glorious.
The English language is working very well, and for the reason that these two months in England were a very good thing.nd and 2nd –

....it's a pleasure for me to see all four of them so friendly.

.....The two sisters went to the shops this morning, as it is appropriate to elaborate their elegance; as for the great John he develops his visits and his plans; he naturally went several times to the office and had the chance to see all the bosses...! except Gilbert you have the ... joy of possessing.........Chalon had to leave these days for Madrid, they are in serious trouble for Tenerife where Spanish law demands only Spanish engineers.

....Simon felt like you that Emile would welcome her open arms. She said that she was desolating to see him grow old without taking a shoulder near him, or her son, or your two cousins, if she could afford it. But do you feel willing to take this task? It must be heavy and in this case you should settle down with them. Perhaps you should entrust your uncle right now with your idea of changing your shoulder rifle. You have to think about all this and not wait too long to make a decision..if you are not decided at all costs to stay in Argentina at the service of the company....

....Good news from Georges that the Greek plebiscite does not overwhelm. It is certain that it will bring back the royalty, despite the republican spirit of the people itself, we are not in a close cheating! In Europe, rather, in Geneva, the horizon seems to be brightening; we could fear only a few days ago, the spark capable of setting fire to the all But everyone fears war, England seems to be going back, and Italy understands. These two countries could never believe that they would be resisted. Whoever would have unleashed the war would be a murderer. Laval has a fine role, he has trouble, and must weigh his words several times before saying them. The internal situation remains serious, the business is going back wrong, the usual life is unchanged as price, I paid 1/10 less to my owner, but the 10% tax that the state has levied since the decrees laws is otherwise painful on our stock exchanges.

.....Jean Cordelle thinks he's going with Simon and the 3 boys for Besançon at Toussaint where there is a bridge that is favourable to schoolchildren. Old Mrs Feige claims her great-grandsons. He is quite likely, in qq months at the retirement of her son-in-law Dupuis, she will return to Paris at Cordelle's. Yvonne should then settle apart, which I believe will cost her.

Vierville, Friday 25 Oct. 35

.....we had lunch with the Zezeths...perfectly! and that they were...all the most charming things... years go by and don't look alike. I took part in the conversation of Benezeth with John to bring you back the pottery of the yard. The Sagne has just left, their daughter has stayed in Paris with Mrs. Sagne, are they there for the duration of the work? I think so, for him at least. The stay must be tough however. It is 36 hours d'auto d'un poste importante de refuelling, we live almost in the tent, barely a wooden hut. In summer : qq 50° in the shade, -35° in winter. We have to take everything to live there....The works must be finished within a maximum of 3 years, there are strong dedits. There are 15 km of road to make with 18 tunnels, the country is a vast chaos of huge rocks and steep mountains; it will require bridges and viaducts. It will take some guts for those who will find it.

....We must see tomorrow at Suzon the CPDE's headquarters. This one has just set up the Salon de la Lumière, quite interesting because of the new developments that it exposes in a new establishment, the end of the modern construction, made of completely independent elements, allowing the easy movement... so we can increase, decrease the parts according to the idea of the moment (the frame being armed cement, of course) This frame quite well, it seems, with the tendency of its chefs ; grand installation of offices....

Good news of George,... The coming of the King does not seem to be a good thing for arbitration decisions, which seem to be much worse than one might have feared, (even to the words of Bénézeth who is not a man to believe in a success) Good for your great ones who deserve to live with the family! To end with the Bénézeth, (who just bought a car!, please!) I heard that he was telling Jean Cordelle that Gilbert loved only the young ones. I know from another point by Beaujon and Hébert that he is very afraid of being thanked one of these days.

I would like to take your brothers and sisters to the French, but here is only the troupe back to its new cooled room; we went to the Rex, without Jean, of course. Simon admired the show and the room itself.

Do you know, Jean, that I am in talks to buy 2 plots of land, planted with beautiful apple trees that touch my Vignet and belong to Father Lebastard. This one, very diminished after an attack now lives at his daughter's in Caen, and shared his little good between his two children. Laterrier to whom I wrote, tells me that it would round up by a little more than one hectare my plantation. He thinks it is worth about 8000F, I will try to buy this from friendly, the auction takes place on November 7th. I would sell 5 shares of the Metals Feast, very rising for qq months because of the war noises. It's worth 2100F, I bought them 1300F. So it wouldn't be a bad deal, I think. I'll keep you informed.

Paris2 Nov. 35Saturday

....boys... start a rough year when they are not being cleaned up, and every night they are being given their themes and lessons until around 11am. As they leave at 7h1/2 in the morning to come back with the only intermediate of an early lunch, one can say that they have a lot of strength. It does not look like the English system, and I regret it, but there would be too much to do to make our elites simplify the programs. They answer that they have done so much...to be desired!!Your two other nephews have taken the necklace well, everything that is science works very well, they have to do in English and especially in French, not so much in spelling, analysis and grammar that they know and apply well, as in literature, dissertations, preparations. All this needs to be developed.... But also I remain confused of the subjects that are submitted to them, and I am sure to dry up as Mich on a thought of Anatole France (!!!) which compared social life with that of the street...poor kids.

Simon is fine but we do not tire her; I am well tormented by this damned heart always ready to make his own. She does not complain, but it is clear that she must lead a life free of turmoil; when I think of mine (d'agitation) at her age!... and that I see as her elder runs like a poisoned rat throughout the day! Finally, God help us, and may your dear Father protect you, my dear ones, all!

...good news of Georges who is well and whose arbitration has just ended by giving him a reason for it almost everywhere. It is the case of several million francs, and I think that the Hersent did not expect so much. Georges starts to believe seriously when he returns. There are still some paperwork left to do, but he intends to be here at the beginning of 36.........To finish with the arbitration, it was time for this to end, the lawyer of the Hersent is a fervent republican and, the judgment barely rendered, he thought it was good to put qq boundaries between him and the royalists; He arrived in Paris, where Suzon was to receive him shortly, but he was already told that the political amnesty would be complete and it would be only wisdom; no one had great confidence in a lasting kingship, the king himself who was being pulled away from him to return; England was pushing and supporting him, with which she hoped a naval base in Greek waters. The plans of our neighbours in front of them were so personal that they could only be feared of mixing with the events of the day. The imbroglio of war and sanctions puts us all in an unfortunate embarrassment, and there is still very little to set fire to the powders of Europe. Our Laval which is not particularly friendly has been very clever, it is engaged in a path full of pitfalls and sss at best; it is all to his honor. ...

.... It seems that Aunt Martha and Alice were in Paris these days, it's tantine who knew this by the cousin who is at her table at the Family Circle. (Rene Laurin, husband of Alice Hausermann) I said that the Feuillesbois will settle in Morocco, in Casa, as soon as the uncle retires, next year. They are not going to settle at Uncle Emile, who judges his sister worthy but difficult to live, and who blames his way of raising her sons, .. true bears, uninhabited to see the world, that is at least what he told Simone.

...I don't know if I told you the other day about the Hersent that some article that I sent you, appeared on the port of Cherbourg, signed by some summities including Jean Batiste and Georges Hersent, where the new port was exalted comparing it to that of the Havre very incomplete made such a noise in Landerneau, that the great Watier has meant to the Schneider – Hersent du Havre that they would not get a penny for this last port... Bénézeth who told me this, adds that the article had been made by Doux, that you must know, my Jean, it is street of London, and that the Ch de Commerce of Cherbourg It was a triumphant fact, these gentlemen having signed without realizing the gravity of the fact... in short it has since been necessary to reverse the Sweet, disavow him, ..the whole lyre. We know what it is, isn't it true and the polytechnicians have a long tooth.

I send you the letter that my friend Bousquet wrote when he returned from Tunisia, he says a lot about it in a few words. I was not able to hide this letter from John, to whom I have shown, of course, the grievances that all those who are not of the X do to these omnipotents, and he could only deplore himself the tendency of his dear comrades.

Suzon had the first time with his wife to have tea, and this intelligent boy was inept at times, and Suzon, who visited the new room of the Society with your brothers and sisters, said that the atmosphere was untenable, so much so that you could feel it. One example: we still have a few pieces; electricians or others are not silent, and for reasons! At the sound of a hammer, Gaby came out of his furious office giving the order to work at night if it was necessary, but that it was impossible for him to work in such a vagrancy....Ms. who told me this in a convincing way when I told him that your dear Father... and so many others... were working next to noisy workshops... Georges Chedal said that just for this pose, he was delighted not to have entered the CPDE where he would have been good, vulgar Central, for all the work.. bothering to their sense. It is probably true.

.....We will celebrate this Thursday, November 7th the 17th and 14th of the François.. that of candles! by gathering us in picnic at your elder who wants to shelter all the horde. .... It is likely that the gifts will be summed up to a few moneys that will serve to enlarge the stock of bicycles and perhaps a canoe, of which the two elders dream, the perissory of the Touny, always in excellent condition.... becoming insufficient for all these seamen in grass....

.....I am delighted to be able to take our boys to the November 11th review....The Titoun is very eager and her mother in her dream, she is not my daughter for nothing.
The auction of the 2 small grasses that I spoke to you about took place on November 7th ....I was convinced that I would not have a competitor and did not advise me to try a friendly sale; that I was much more likely to have it better than I did. Veremos, if the deal does not end in my favour, I will not make it an illness.
Sunday

....I was interrupted by the arrival of our travelers, delighted with their journey to the Jura, so beautiful at this time with its adornment in autumn. Their good grandmother was all ragaillardie to see them again. The Dupuis are still in Besançon until July, when he will be retired, they want to come to Paris and as their means will be diminished, he is looking for a situation. Mrs Cordelle would have liked to have gone to his parents' home, she would have taken over her old mother, but the others, parents and daughter do not appreciate this solution... and I think that everything will remain in the status quo...

Parissaturday9 Nov. 1935

...Our boys continue to work well, the two cadets clearly take the lead in science, French – I'm not talking about grammar and spelling – is weaker, but that you would have gotten out yourself if you had been asked to develop the following verse from Sully Prudhomme: "O unceasing swarming parasitic homework that pulls around a cup of tea!" and note that poor Michou has found something else to put on a page 1⁄2; I don't suppose he will have the maximum, and probably he won't be the only one.

....the information given by Bousquet on Bizerte is partly false, the Hersent have indeed the repair of the pier, but the demands of Ackermann made them miss the dredgings that were imposing, idem for Porto where the Hersent offered 42 million and the winner 35. Since we have the Persian, says Hébert, Rosario is considered a resort as long as we do not have 50° in the shade (37° to 40° at night).... we must be in Paradise.

....The auction of the small plots of land in Vierville had to take place yesterday; not having any news, I think I'm not the owner. In Sha Allah.

From Vierville it is written that Dr. Létienne just convoluted for the 3nd He's 75 years old. ...... he tastes rather people. The first two women were former maids, but their age was at least matched with his.. this one will soon have killed, he will only have what he deserves.

....I hope you don't get bored with the work, Jean, it doesn't seem very active because of the rise in the rio, after Drillon, but the cash is getting out and that's the main one, right?

We are eager to read you, perhaps have written to you by this mail plane so sadly lost on the coasts of Brazil.. the courage and dedication of the aviators is an admirable thing.

One word at a time, I learn that Father Lebastard's 2 small fields are mine for the total sum of 6500F plus 20% of costs. It's a good deal. It's rented 650F per year to Blin, the blacksmith. I'll sell to pay this 2 Cotelle shares, they're worth 2980 each....

Paris 17 Nov 1935 Sunday

...I had your letter plane of November 8 three days ago, and I think the "Great Conte" (a fast Italian ship) which will take you on Tuesday in 15 days......your letters breathed the contentment of this little runaway in the Sierra, where you found a pleasant solitude in the midst of beautiful landscapes. Thus I keep the memory of it when we went there with your dear Father; only the hotel of la Faldaresumé all the luxury and comfort and he was full of Argentinians who did not enjoy any of the nice sites in the vicinity as to go there in the least possible. Summer, it must be invaded by all the edges, and unfortunately! by many sick. I see you planning to spend the summer there with a little apprehension, I admit. It would be anything else if you had a house. - You're welcome. with a nice garden where your little ones could smack them easily without searching in a dust cosmopolitan and certainly defiled. Renting a little villa also has big disadvantages because you never know by whom it was inhabited before! J-a-a-a-a-bout saw a terrible example, the house that was mentioned being inhabited by a young TB woman.... If I dare give my voice to the chapter, I would like to see you better steer your steps and your summer to qq beach... and I also don't understand why you don't go to Riachuelo? Is there any reason you don't say, about the Cordelle? while your sun exacerbates, ours is in pieces......... showering force but it doesn't look like the wonderful rains that change your noon into a vast lake. The Rhone has 20 km wide in places; what to do is to make your glorious Parana. The saddest thing is that it brings lots of misery and ruins that will take many years before they are repaired.

...our little Yves had in the middle of the week 2 days of fever with a small gastric embarrassment that gave way to the 1era "Raspberry" castor oil (he even finds it so good that he speaks nothing less than taking it away 3It seems like nothing, but it makes such a wind today when it has not been dared to get her out of the house, especially since the girl sowed in the house a wave of carbinated coryza. Poor girl, she is being run away like the plague! and she is a little offended. Boys always hear like larmons in the fair and win whom better the scientific laurels of the Kayser course. It's less brilliant in letters...

.....the Cordelle – less Yves – are at Mrs Cordelle's where they have lunch and the two Chedal boys have just gone to a dance class organized by Mrs Dessuset qq some of her friends having only girls and looking for qq representatives of the strong sex (these are already the smiles of the mothers of girls to marry, perhaps!).Jean and Simone found their 2 sons too young to embark them in there, the 2 elders are delighted to start their social education, and promised me to pursue mine with qq lessons of rumba... It is true that I miss it completely.
Our 4 boys are all in the rental of a tennis court that they have every Thursday afternoon with 4 or 5 girls from 14 to 16 – the same as during the course; the inauguration took place on Thursday, under the auspices of the great Jean who led the quartet. This one is well given, but everyone complained about the stiffness of some muscles the next day.

....Our week began with the review of Nov. 11, which we saw... more troops this year, and I noticed that many co-tasks had been decorated. Uniforms became pimping again... having sown the severity of the war time (for how long?) ....the motorized army was numerous, but the 32nd d'artillery, conservative, bravely paraded at the trot of his huge horses, bravo! Yves did not believe his eyes, Brigitte gave the indications...! ....the crowd was numerous and vibrant....

In the evening we went every 4 to a gala party at the Opera in honor of our beautiful victory. A whole series of ballets: Prometheus, Icare, La Grisi, Panthea, the first 2 with Serge Lifar with the talents of mime and admirable dancer; it is better than a talent, than a temperament, it is a soul that lukewarms...
....It will be 15 years that the Cordelle are married, they intend to go to lunch both in St Germain if time permits....

...all women here have long hair, I don't know what miracle; at the Opera the other day when there were many pretty elegances (it was also a day of subscription) we were seeing mats and buns again!! Where did they come from great gods? As for the bandito, I am sure that the boy hairstyle suits him and that no feminine outfit goes to his decided....

...whatever you say about Uncle Emile, I've already said to myself, but I'm convinced above all that the immediate vicinity of these different families would not be the best reason to go to Morocco. It wouldn't tell me anything worth it.When in your future in Hersent, it's a question point I dare answer; do they even know what it is?

....My little Maine, Simon still asks for your commissions, time passes! She also asks if she should not bring the tracks of the steam loco? It would be easy and the place will not miss. She must write you by the next mail...

ParisFriday 29 Nov. 1935

...The four big guys were out there in tennis yesterday to make a good ball, it was Thursday! But a big shower dispelled their hopes, they came back sorry; the two mothers believed their offspring to the pleasure, had given themselves qq hours off and had been in Gaumont to see the film of "2nd "The 3 little pigs and the bad wolf" I came back rather groggy by the cries of the spectators.... the joy of my 2 little ones was very complete... All this embellished with music, even with the small classes of the dance of the Opera, with such graceful and well-known steps...

.....it's (a book about Gordon and the Khartoum drama) gives an overview of the English policy of the last century; Since then, it has developed in such a way that it puts Europe on ball. I don't know if your papers give you the impression of current concerns; sanctions requested by the SDN (the UN of the time)But especially by the English, bring resistance from the Italians and even others.; no one feels the courage to envisage a war to defend Ethiopia (invaded or threatened by the Italians) The House, meeting yesterday for the first time, was not allowed to be part of the SDN until it had fulfilled all the necessary conditions (abolition of slavery, etc.).era - Long time ago. (since spring 34, after the riots of 6 February and the general strike of 12 February 34, the government had been authorized to govern with decree-laws)Don't trust him. (socialist and communist alliance) However, there was no agreement, but fear is the beginning of wisdom; judging by forces deployed around the Bourbon Palace last night (which I saw when I came back with the little ones from the theatre) horse patrolling and several hundred police officers, our good deputies had been sheltered from qq protests of the leagues. The Fire Crosses are targeted by the communists; Robert Collard at whom we were taken tea on Saturday found – with many others – it seems! – that we should take action against these energists, in fact the French Action which responds punch by punch, enjoys near them a certain peace. However the number of Fire Crosses increases in a considerable way; they are now 700,000. It is a force that others cannot neglect. What will we do?

...The same at Renée de Lépinay, always a good girl, with Thézou (Theresa Bros)and Mrs. Roger Busson Janssens a little more snob (Nany laughs and emphasizes "Janssens", because Mrs. Busson added the name of her mother who has a particle)She serves as secretary to her husband who has completely disappeared from our traffic...? Probably because of the life insurance you know. Jean Cordelle attended yesterday a meeting of insured persons called by the trustee of bankruptcy who strongly advised them to take civil action in the proceedings brought before the board of directors following fraud complaints. The history of this company is clearly that of the so-called "aigrefins".../....it was still in deficit...in 1928, the state was about to ban it. I can't believe Roger. (Busson) or else – and that's the reason! – he's a fool who didn't know about his business. There are still many other reasons for charging the board, such as taking mortgages on a house – of course, a director! – already heavily mortgaged, or buying a building twice what it was worth – to a director...! The condemnation of these people can only be moral satisfaction....

....I'm going to go this week too to see Lot, about Adolph's legacy (Gerry), because it's not Robert (Gerry) , nor his cousins, who are able to "dasticate" if j- dare say people who occupy it, and all that drags along.. Robert who came to lunch Wednesday at Suzon is always very happy with his fate; the house is very comfortable, very well heated, one gives it every week comedy or cinema and the park is large enough to walk without wishing to get out......

....I made Louis-Philippe chair cover that I had in the vestibule – in currant velvet, quite simply, but the upholsterer by removing it found papers dated 1828 interesting to a Mr Pitar, born in l'Allier, not very important elsewhere. What were they doing there! great gods? Tony de Béchillon had one day found 400F in the armrests of an armchair bought from brac bric.

Suzon has just been portrayed by an excellent artist who had met him at our neighbor Mrs. Torchez. In fact, it is the uncle of this one, brother of the Admiral, an old man of 72 years, medallist of the Salon, having of his works at the museum of Versailles, and whose father, pupil of the Ingres, is at the Louvre. He was tempted by the kind a little special of your elder, and he made a superb color drawing, very similar, and which he offered him, please, asking only for a photo. It's nice as a bill, what talent! Your elder has laid with her Greek dress, green water, garnished with her big cabochons in jewels of the country, she has in her ears the Greek earrings garnished with pearls. I am delighted, but I know one that must be even more than I do: it is George, because he had the keen desire to make the portrait of Suzon either in pastel or oil. very Nice thing.
Suzon is quite confused about this splendid gift, and I don't know how to answer it, but I'm sure Georges will discover in Athens all that it takes to please the artist.

We have to have tea at the bottom this afternoon, they left St Cloud and now live in a very nice apartment near the Molitor pool and overlooking the Wood.
.....my boys are always working very well, the cadets are very brilliant, in math, in science and remove the first places. Jean-Pierre also, even in Latin, English, French. Yves has a beautiful face, he made us laugh, a few days ago, as we put some Ercerhinol in his nose "It does not get the nose, does it," he said to his mother, "why don't you take that powder that we put to open the bathtub?"

ParisFriday, December 7, 1935

...it is increasingly a question of Simon extending her stay here with Yves by two months; she has, if not fattened, at least much better than when she arrived in France, and above all she is more engaged, more active, I had been struck by her 1⁄2 passivity. It is not a question of her fatigue, but at her age one must have too much activity. So it is likely that after the holidays of the year will take the way back alone.

.....We had dinner at the Héberts last Saturday – and a lot of talk about you – they live in a charming 3-room apartment with all comfort, electric and fridge kitchen, not far from here (Buckles).....he had to leave yesterday for Oran with his wife, for about ten days – big work in perspective.....

Through Gabriel Dessus, Jean Cordelle presented Robert Collard to the CPDE engineer who is in charge of the advertising section; he is still involved in the placement of this invention of bright posters, which are nothing less than small luminous films that Robert had conceived, and where he has already put 80.000 francs of capital for the development not yet finished. The help of CPDE would be valuable to him; his idea seemed interesting and I would be very happy if it allowed him to recover a little of his hopes.

Simon poses before the painter of Suzon for a pasteled drawing already very much and very similar. She poses in simple white dress, with her hand leaning on the cheek, a red silk drapery with wide black flowers, on her shoulders; it is very nice, and Jean Cordelle is delighted. It is not free, for example, but the price is very reasonable – 800F – despite the artist's reputation.(this pastel is in my room in Vierville, with another representative of Dad, but it's less resembling)

I told you in my last letter that we were going to have tea at the top of a house. Big modern apartment, near the door d'Auteuil, their furniture swims in these large rooms of 7x6, the living room 8x7, it is empty and for cause. Modern lighting, white walls with paint, dark carpet, nailed, qq modern furniture. I have the impression that the good Gaby has seen great; their 2 good to do and good child seem insufficient in such a building; they are young, they have faith in the future!. (Aline Dessus) is a beautiful 3-year-old, Mrs. Dessus who seems to be built in hot and sand, is at this moment quite ill-developed, doctors are trying to discover something extraordinary, without being able to relieve her...

....We were before yesterday to see "hope" at the Gymnasium, with Franceu and Geniat. It's very good, you'll read this in Candide, but it's a piece made of expressions that highlight the ideas..well modern. We took a subscription – for 33F, we are entitled to 4 places in all theatres with 50% discount, and for 25F per place the other day we had a dressing room. That we had it last year with you!

....this year which will undoubtedly set your fate in Argentina, Jean Cordelle believes in new works that would undoubtedly keep you at the Hersent, my John, whom your dear Father inspires and guides you....

ParisFriday13Xbre1935

....this time it will be the Massilia who will carry my letter, and I think this one will reach you very close to the day of the year, which will make me renew my wishes, my dears. There are already parties towards you since last week, as well as packages at your address (pending the real trance that the great John will bring you); I will also post your 2 pocket agendas, always the same for each one of you; and also the Spring calendar for the household accounts. In the middle of all this you will find in all corners the tenderness of the old nany who thinks more intensely about you in these days of the year...

....I hope you continue to be healthy, the pictures of the Sierra show us a quartet in good shape, the little one very changed with his new hairstyle that goes deliciously. The stay you will make at the sea will give another tone to this small world, I confess 100,000 times better to see you go on this side than in the Sierra where dangerous neighborhoods are unfortunately! Often to fear, it is only a pity that the stay in Riachuelo does not fix. It is always beneficial and so much less expensive for the purse! Finally the main is acquired, cad health, and the bright air of the ocean must be a famous whip...

...The term ends for the boys who worked very well, they will not have stolen their vacations....nd and we will take over our winter quarters as you know them; your elder will take possession of the couch of the office where you were sleeping, my Jean, the small rooms will be occupied by the Cordelle, father, mother and Yves, me and the Bison, and we will spend quiet but beneficial days.
Poor George will still be alone this year... we celebrated their 18th birthday last Sunday, without any fascists, and for the sake of...... poor Suzon was rather melancholy, there is much to do. Settlement matters are at the status quo. Greeks know that they will have to pay, but as they do not have the money.- The coming of the King will only be able to make progress, Georgesa had the opportunity to attend a concert where the King came, and he was very impressed, he wrote, by the usual ceremonial. The arrival of the King announced by a vigorous "Gentlemen, the King! I admit that I attended the parade of one of these processions, which did not add anything to the glory of France. Finally, this poor George IIa, who was very much in his country, showed some courage towards all the protesters.

Jean Cordelle left this morning for Rouen, where he was going to inform him of the purchase of the equipment needed for future work which the young boss almost considered insured, at least he said in a letter that Jean received. Flondrois, with whom we had dinner yesterday, at Suzon's, was less enthusiastic, as a shareholder of the SPR... but he kept himself well, he said, giving his opinion, since you were interested in the thing. Gilbert was waiting for 23rd in Paris, and Jean was about to be very busy with him....

...we went to the French Comedy on Sunday, Suzonet me, the Cordelles were at cousins around Paris. (it was to be in Rueil at the Jennys or in Chènevières at Marcel Cordelle), And the three Chedals at their grandparents' house.
...We celebrated the 13th anniversary of Michou with the candle cake, and tomorrow night the two mothers took their boys out in the Odeon where they played "Vive the Roy". I was afraid of the cold that is raging at the moment, and I will not accompany them, which I regret well, but I want to be d'aplomb for our trip to Vierville. However, I would have liked to enjoy the impressions of François and Michel whose first weapons, if I dare say, in this kind of distractions.

We had the old uncle at lunch on Wednesday; I find him in good condition, he finally agreed to follow a diet without meat, and found himself very well....... his business continues, Mr. Lot hopes that next month will add qq result. I hope without believing it.
Long visit, Mrs Godard I hadn't seen for several months. Good news from all of us. Annette has just spent four months near an old Hindu maharajah like...lady of company, with whom she traveled all over Europe and who would like her to join him in India to adopt him... without comment. Mrs Godard judge her daughter a little crazy. The young household Carnot has a son.

....René Vauterin sent Jean-Pierre this week the very detailed plan of a beautiful torpedo, I do not need to tell you that this beautiful board now spreads on the wall of the boy's room , not far from the pretty print of the Jeanne which you sent them in March and which they put under glass. It is not done to cure Jean-Pierre from the love of the sea and the profession of marine officer....

Paris21 Xbre1935Saturday

....I wrote to you every week by ship, and my wishes have already been gone for a few weeks, I come here to renew them by plane......is there ever with these great birds that push bravery to the extreme..and who will carry this letter will arrive without any trouble? To unknown airman, I anonymously send my wishes for success...

....We are waiting for the young boss after tomorrow here....Ms. Jean Hersent whom I saw yesterday did not seem so positive about the successes achieved at BA...Flondrois is sceptical, .....the 27 must take place the board of directors of the SPR and during that time the shares went up on stock exchange, they were worth 15700F.

....as the Cordelles wanted to spend Christmas with Mrs Cordelle, we all had to leave on the 26th morning for Vierville. We know only that decide with Jean Cordelle, and with this we have Michou with angina and a little adenite fever (gland under maxillaries). He has been in bed for 3 days and Dr. Don't want to get up until the fever has completely fallen. So it is possible that we leave Suzon and I with all the rest of the band valid on the 26, Simon will follow if it is necessary 1 or 2 days later, with or without John.

....Jean Cordelle who will probably embark on the 15th of January. Simon stays with us with the little one who has a superb look and a fierce appetite. She, is less brilliant, our brave Artault has already given her qq drops that have done well on the heart walk, but she does not have enough tension, it is a matter of fortifying. I am very comfortable that she remains to avoid your summer so painful....

Paris27 Dec. 35Friday

....and then tomorrow I think I'm on my way to Vierville, that's to say my Michou is getting better, and I hope that this will continue, we had some dark days this week, that was those where the thermometer recorded unsuspecting degrees – Tuesday: 40° 4/10 –Wednesday: 38° - yesterday: 39° 5/10. However, Dr. n'is not worried, these adenite fevers have such surprises without that there is danger. . There is a big ganglion swollen on the neck, but there is no threat of phlegmon, and we are predicted that it will resume its measurement after long weeks, the fever being quite fallen. It was no longer a question of leaving together to finish the year in Vierville. But the tickets being taken and the boys needing great air after a quarter of hard work, Suzon was devoted and she left yesterday with her cook and the 5 valid children, what to occupy! Of course the young class was rather delighted to go and poor Michou had big heart!...It is sweet 10° to 12°, our Normandy will be welcoming...

I'm leaving tomorrow for only two days, I'll be here on Tuesday, but I absolutely need to have Dubois sign and renew the lease, I've got to meet Pommier about my new acquisition, and I have to study the passage of the stream that goes to the sea and that the municipality asks me to establish in the herbage du Bois using large sandstone pipes, which, in fact, does not smile at all, because I fear some surprises in the future.

I'm going to Vierville to give the trances all over the place, as your dear Father did...

Dr. Simon has already warned that it will be necessary to change our little patient, that this glandular fever will certainly have weakened (he does not appear in his bed where he is always being trained). As his recovery will coincide with the departure of the great Jean who embarks on the 20th in Marseilles, it may be that I am going with the little one – where the Dr. will send us – to allow Simon to stay with him until he leaves. This is a unfortunate scratch that has made us all mad! ...
