LETTERS from NANY to his son JEAN HAUSERMANN,1933, excerpts, addressed to Rosario

For the record, 1 franc from 1933 is worth about 0.57 Euros or 3.8 Francs from 2003 - there's a deflation of -3.9% -

Paris4 January1933Wednesday

....see also Hébert, and Littard, Robert Collard and good tantine with whom we finished the year with a good four-hand music session.....

...q good cards too, including the firefighters' card from Vierville. We know what to say!Mr. Leterrier tells me about his daughter's next marriage with a farmer in Baynes, and he seems very happy that his daughter is not giving up the land. He is a wise man.

....I also send through this mail the 3 boxes of Fortossan Irradié for my big father Yves to Simon. I hope all this will happen at good speed. The noise is now that the Atlantic ship is on fire off Cherbourg. It is to be hoped that no. Not to mention that I was not angry that your elders were at BA with all these sinisters more or less explained...

...My two big boys offered me a very nice letter weigher from their purse! Is that nice enough? And what mysteries! What tricks to get to search in the savings I have. The old uncle is fine, he woke up again on December 31. He seems to me very emotional...

Paris17January1933Tuesday

...I have a lot to tell you, the week is full, Georges Chedal had time to accompany me with the two little ones, before leaving, to the Montparnasse cemetery where the old grandfather was brought back (Rémy Hausermann). This one now rests in peace after a life of labor, certainly, but his old age would have been more affectionate if he had been less intransigent and less harsh. I had received on Saturday morning a laconic dispatch signed Alice (Feuillebois, Daddy's sister) And dated from Orleans "Dead Father, funeral 3 hours Monday Montparnasse". Since I did not know their address, it was impossible for me to give them a sign of life. So yesterday we were at the cemetery door, in cold weather, snow covering the streets.

Fortunately Georges had the idea of keeping me the car that had brought us where we were well protected from the cold, because the car that was bringing the body from Orleans, with the brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law arrived only at 4h minus 5. They had derailed as a result of the ice, the car had got into the ditch, it had to look for another one. I had little details, because pressed by the time of the train of Georges I could not linger and the travelers left for Orleans immediately by the road. Martha seemed to be very distressed, Emile was there, arrived too late to see gd father who died at Alice's, after a double pneumonia that had weakened him a lot. He had returned from Morocco in November; and had fallen a lot since then, he would have been 90 years old in July. Few people at the funeral where I did not want to recognize any of the cousins. Brief ceremony but very touching, by a pastor full of piety and heart. Emile must come back here in 2 or 3 days and told me that he would come to me. I introduced Georges, the little ones; We talked about you, but it was all very short, it was almost dark. (Breakfast) has grown fat and not very old.one of the 2 threads There, bigger than his father, the smart and fine air, and it's a miracle if no one caught anything because it was cold!

Our house is unharmed, at least as for me and the little ones. (Monday evening) and will be on Thursday at 11 am in Athens. aloneIn the car that goes to Greece, he will have to make a good trip, crossing Switzerland and part of Italy is made day as well as Serbia which must be under the snow. He was eager to find Suzon and Bison both fluctuated - but better.era I think it's a very anxious news, the letters are still insufficient in these cases and all she knows is that Georges stays at Hersent's house. These gentlemen didn't want to let him go... (Tio Mio I have to tell me).

I had stayed in last week's letter to my Simon to the offers of the CPDE and Georges' intentions to tell G. H. (Georges Hersent most likely) "I am being offered a situation here, I have paid for it, I must go back to France for the education of my sons, and Mr Marcel did not give me any assurance, on the contrary, I decided to accept the situation offered if you are still with the same intentions. I must give the answer in 48 hours and I come to ask you what I should do" followed qq less harsh sentences, expressing regret to abandon House H. after 20 years of loyal services. (probably Georges H.) after agreement with his brother (probably Jean Hersent), allowed Georges Chedal to return for the month of October as he said, in Paris, with time to others a trip to Greece for the settlement, and he offered him 100,000F of supplements base To which Georges asked 120,000F, they were granted Follow-up Friday Georges went to wear the answer to Gabriel Dessus (at CPED)He's seen Malegaria again. (CPED's boss) He said to George, "He was willing to make a sacrifice of money and go to the Hersent to say that he needed Georges if he wanted to consent to it. But Georges did not want, after what had been heard with the Hersent. (one of the owners of the Bridges and Chaussées maritimes in France) avait donné d'excellents renseignements sur Georges à son ami Malégarie et avait même ajouté"Je ne suis pas étonné que ce garçon qui a de l'allant, veuille quitter la maison H., They're a bunch of noodles." As soon as Georges Chedal agreed, Georges Hersent presented him to Chalon!era Whenever it was seen, he was kind, but Very The office was in revolution, everyone knew (by whom?) that Georges was coming back to Paris; and the brave Littardi admitted to him that it would not hurt to be a little moved, that since Father's death we had not taken a new job at home. They just missed Toulon's with a 15% discount, the successful bidder made 35%!...

....the winter came all of a sudden and the snow fell dru yesterday morning. It is fortunately stopped and we note +4° this afternoon. The calorific heats well, which did not always happen in the time of mother Bonnin. Does the owner seek to please his tenants, where is the concierge more conscientious? I would vote for the 2nd Yesterday, when I paid my term, I learned that five tenants had warned them that they could not. ...a lot of people are very embarrassed. There is no business. I saw Mr. L. Boutillier who told me that they would just come by saving money to raise their four children. She only has a good one...Where are the snows of old?...

...Bros was coming out of their house (Bosket) As I was able to do, he was going back to Cherbourg, and he said a few words from the Atlantic, whose show was terrifying from his plane.

....My owner wants to put the hot water, with a meter of course, and payable; he would like to keep his apartments at a high price, but does not find them to rent because of the lack of comfort. He found a solution not trivial, he would install the hot water on the kitchen sink with a tap and a pipeline I'm not taking anything from the street of Longchamp. I'm getting on the agenda as soon as Georges and Suzanne have taken over their boys, I'm moving to take a smaller apartment. That's not what's missing here!

I am furious after Mermoz who forgot to warn me of his departure for BA I would have been so happy to entrust him with a letter for all my darlings! It was he who had brought 5 days after his departure from Paris a letter for my Simon at the time of Titoune's birth.

…Pommier, the notary of Trevières, tells me that he has touched the farm of Longueville, my dear great Jean.....

...Did I say that George had brought me (which package) a beautiful reproduction of Isis's head, the daughter of Esculape, a beautiful Greek with a pure profile, which will do very well in the library in Vierville.ir travel - in February without a doubt - unless the weather is too bad.

....I have not spoken to anyone, except Bousquet and Tantine about the death of Gd Father and will not change anything at the mourning I continue to bear for your dear Father. However, I have put a veil of crepe for the ceremony, only by convenience. I have committed Georges to tell Suzon not to mourn? What will she do with it? And you?....

Paris1ir February1933Wednesday

...I think with satisfaction that today the mothers and the 4 boys are on their way to the Riachuelo, ....I see you from here making the usual move and I imagine the joy of our 4 dears to the thought of being left in this welcoming Riachuelo. Provided that the locusts have left you with greenery! The dirty animals usually go there until the last end of green. Finally you will be fresh to sleep....

...I think I can leave on Saturday for Vierville where I will spend the sad days of your dear Father's death. This week is for me a little bit of a little bit of a calvary; today our dear patient had a better real one that had left us all hope, alas! Soon to the ground. The days that follow will lead to the worst and Sunday and Monday I will live all the horrible in a lonely retreat where the calm of the old house will bring his balm! ...

Good news of Piraeus, where Georges returned without gravity fortunately; he had caught cold at the funeral of grandfather, and there is nothing surprising because we were paddling in the snow......Suzon and him are building real plans for the return that will not be long enough now. .... all the joy they have, but Suzon who has the hard tooth, she says, almost regrets that things could not be arranged at CPDE, just to have the pleasure of letting Marcel go. I'm in charge of seeing if the owner would have a place to stay so your elders can take an appt. in the house.nd The house of the courtyard, which is also for rent, is very clear and has just been cleaned and painted by the owner. It consists of a large entrance which all the tenants have made a small boudoir, living room, dining room, 2 bedrooms - and the rest - that is quite what I would need. A room remaining at the disposal of my children, which will be completed by qq divans for the travelers; I will not make a dining room; but will install my living room and Father's office where I will take my meals on a table in a corner. For the days when we will be more numerous it will be easy to have one of these tables that folds everywhere now. I will leave to your grown-ups the dining room, you will see later when your old mom will be going to share everything without any trouble especially, and if one of you wishes to eat her in question to give it to you without discussion.

In this way, your big ones and I would be very close to each other, to help us if needed, but still the owner must not overdo his claims - and he has some! - Appt. don't miss them! Simon could tell you that the posters are at all houses.

I didn't see Uncle Emile again...I concluded that he didn't come back to Paris unless it was broken that we were staying with them for a little while. After that waiting time, Georges just had time to go home and pack his bags and dinner before he went on his train at 7:00. I explained my haste to them to leave, they might have taken this as a false excuse.

But I was surprised to receive a letter from Me Fauchon, notary in Orléans, who is responsible for the settlement of the succession of Gd father and asks me for your address...I must make my mea culpa! I was convinced that we would not hear anything, and I remain as convinced that you will have little. At least by answering this notary, my John, say that you would hold to certain memories to which your dear father attached a price. He had indeed demanded from gd father of the paintings made in his youth, at Chessy, that he had wanted to keep without Father insisting; But it's natural that it comes back to you. There is also the very beautiful fur skin we brought back to him in 1912...

....Visit of Mrs Jacques de Mons, charming, .....Jacques still works on his invention but it does not develop and the patron who sets her up pays him badly. So the young household no longer has a maid. When I think about the worries of all those I see here, I find you very lucky....

...Tio Mio came back to tell me that there were 3 free appt. in his house, 5 in the next one, that he had informed at the town hall of a school for boys, that there was the Pasteur high school, etc., etc., so that we would settle near him. That's quite another surprise. I was very convinced that he was infinitely jealous of his independence and his incognito! And as I made him notice that the girl (Brigitte) I think he's hanging on his bell, he said, "Well, good, good!" But I think Neuilly is a long way off for George and the boys who are doing great in Kaiser.ir in arithmetic with 16 1/2 and a very good teacher. Phil has an honest average: 12....

...I took Yvonne Bidel to the Troca on Sunday, the Com. Fse.Y troop gave Bernstein's duel. It was perfect at all times, and we had a good afternoon. The poor girl has no luck with her last job, she hasn't been paid for in 2 months.

...I'm reopening my letter, Jean, to tell you that you'd better write a few words of regret to Uncle Emile on the occasion of Gd Father's death, you wrote him for the 1st.ir January?

Paris22February1933-Wednesday

.....if the sun shines it lights up roofs covered with snow falling down this night. A joyful awakening of boys who still see battles, and regret the absence of necks! Yet so many poor people will have grappled this night! Sad period that this one filled with misery and anxiety. This is a bad setting with the festivities of carnival which the old tone seems to delight. It floods us with brochures and newspapers relating to the niçois follies. I confess not to take any pleasure in looking at them. The worries are real. All around us, Paris has little desire to have fun! You know about political unrest, the officials protest with ardour; some are in half revolt and Martha Pichorel perverse as long as she can, convinced of her apostolate. Robert must be sorry, tantine is very little aware, he leathered it one day or the other to her daughter, I fear, but she will not have stolen it. The first days of this week were rather dark; the government seems to re-enter, will it have the grip that it would have been necessary? I have caused a lot of one of these days to Mrs Bligny back from Italy, and very admirer of Mussolini. When we read the great articles that L. Gillet returned from Italy made out of his impressions of travel, we can only bow to the magnificent effort of this country, which was well degreased a few years ago, and which becomes a great power again thanks to the energy of this little teacher who became El Duce! Where is ours? People who are sensible while hoping in our France, are not without worries, and there is something to do.

...I was ringing at the door of the Héberts on Sunday......In the flat quiet office, the Iraq affair is in the lake, it remained at an English house that had joined a German house. The distance from the bids was not huge, 96 million to 108, I think, Hebert said they would have had without Jean Hersent (which put bad will) and demanded an overbidding of 10 million (nothing but that) at the last moment. Is this to be regretted? We are talking about work in Majunga and the lukewarm tap(Benezeth) So that's why he was talking to me about your last visit there, little Maine, and as I said you all had a fever, Mrs. Bénézeth decided that when she went up to Tananarive, it was "Unfortunately not everyone is in Tan."

Meanwhile Chalon collected crumbs, scraps of work: 90.000F for a villa to be built in Brest, 100,000F for a barracks ...etc, and Hébert claims that he is immersed in the smelly details of the toilets...........The Verdon is finished and it is wondered who will come to dock at the famous wharf. The Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce has a good game now that the poor Atlantic is definitely removed from the list, to demand work for us to go back to Bordeaux: before the replacement of the Atlantic is ready!..it will sink water in the Garonne..

Simon received Simon's long letter, and noted the purchase of the carpets and lamp for the Martins, this one more difficult to find, it seems. The French military mission, which disappeared from Athens because the funds were missing, having made a raid in the bazaar of Monastirati before his departure. And I do not need to tell you that it is an object that is no longer made..in series at least...

ParisWednesday, March 8, 1933

....if I decide to move, I must worry about another cottage. I have seen lots, good and bad, little and old, old and new, all considerably diminished and restored, but my preference so far goes to those I saw in Passy, B.C. of Lamballe in a new building, with all the modern comforts and where a 4nd The floor is free with 2 apartments, one of 6 rooms, which can communicate. I need this one, because besides its 4 rooms, there is a lingerie that would serve as a room for Martha, incineration of garbage, elevator of servants, hot water all year round, beautiful large rooms, all very clear. The one of 6 would suit our Greeks and I immediately warned them; it is not far from the course Kaiser, nor from the wood; I will send you the plan next week. There is no penny to do, and we wait for the taste of the tenants to put the papers. J-y will have a guest room for my dear travelers, and there is room for children to be served. Is not the proximity of your elders would allow you to overflow a little if necessary?
It's gonna make a change in my life... and I'm not leaving without regret....

.......Good news from Athens where the elections do not seem to have brought peace. Flondrois is about to leave....He is the only one I've spoken of the kidnapping of M (Marcel Martin?) And he's just like me, he barely wants to believe it. Yet the facts are there. It's agreed that when he writes to Urquiza, he won't blow a word of it. How is our old friend, after so much emotion he might find himself worse? My Simon in his emotion did not spread on deliverance. Where was Toto carrying the ransom? and who did he see? M. was in the country? It seems to me that if I had been in his place I would have fought like a beautiful devil, with fists and teeth... even though I had to get killed, but he's a quiet boy. His father says a lot about business. I hope these bandits have finished their exploits and they won't touch you. Your best backup is your modest state of fortune to all.

......I took Mrs Cordelle to Troca the other day when the French troupe played "L-Autre Danger" by Mr Douay. I didn't like the play...Sunday, I'm taking Tantine to see Lohengrin, still in Troca, with the opera company and an orchestra of 150 musicians. With this and Wagner's music, we can expect a little noise. This popular theatre really has all the advantages, 2 steps away from me, the best artists, the 1⁄4 of the theater prize, and no toilet to do, they are only modest "afficionados" that we meet there. There is probably no luxury of the big evenings, but the atmosphere of the public is vibrant....

... I must not forget to transmit to Totoni from the Philou 10 that he got a certain map of Asia Minor found in a drawer and that he presented as his, the animal, without telling me, that after, naturally. Congratulations of the jury...no! of the professor. And Philou to add "I keep it for Jean-Paul!" all the same naughty there...

..You congratulated Leterrier, (marriage of her daughter, future Mrs. Jacquet?) John, and wrote a few words to Dubois for the birth of his daughter (future Mrs Chambrun?)

Paris22 March 1933 – Wednesday

...I got yesterday the good letter from my Simon who was giving me some good news about our wounded man's health. (Skip on the calf of François, at the Riachuelo) ....So you were more quiet, and at the time Simon was writing, little Maine was getting pretty to go to Colonia to get the 2 small families? It reminds me of the little trips I was also making in front of your dear Father, in a "chock" with rather hard springs and gallop of the 5 horses coupled, 2 of which in arrows!!! Is this still the Lunaqui making the journey of BA? I hope for you that ours had a bit of the specialty of turning senses over at the slightest wind! We were never sure to arrive at the end of its trip ...;

...I have visited lots of apartments,...these from Lamballe Avenue seem the best and I must see the managing director of the company to which they belong on Friday to discuss the prices. Because we are trading them. , like the rest, ask Simon as I take it well for it! I must also see Pourcheroux my current owner to know what he would ask for from the appt. Kaplan or mine. We have time to turn...

....The chestnut of Asnières Mme de Brunville has just lost her mother, a Mathau; in the process, only men of the close family are listed, but there is all Norman Armorial, not a rotture! which is rare enough to be mentioned. Mathau have been for 7 or 8 centuries, from father to son at the castle of St-Pierre de Semilly, do you remember? we cross a field to see the ruins of the primitive castle?

…Leon wrote that the wind had removed part of the roof from the booth which he never called "the theatre." I just sent strips of thatched, taken from the builder, and which the curator of Vierville will pose with Leon. Dubois just sowed fertilizer on his room of the Wood that needed it, I am half with him, in order to better ensure that it was done, Leon helped to spread it. We planted 10 young apple trees at the Vignet, all this extends a little the powers of Leon that I made help a little for his garden, it cannot be everywhere....

ParisWednesday, April 5, 1933

... I have just received the letter from my Simon, dated March 11 (with the little pictures) still dated from the Riachuelo where she extended her stay because of our Francis. ....

....they work well my boys......They count the days, almost the hours that separate us from our departure to Vierville. I decided for the day after the Palms, in order to avoid the long Gospel slowly sung by our brave parish priest, the blessing of the branches and the procession at the cemetery which is done by all times if need be under an umbrella. I do not want to catch cold and start again the little comedy of 2 years ago. ....Our journey is very easy-and less expensive – because of the bus that corresponds with the express and sets us in Vierville at 2h. typing in "station" of Vierville! I have already set aside the old frusques, the big shoes, the wool jackets, and the sweaters that are necessary in our Normandy. Leon métras that the peaches that had bloomed on a large scale were grilled by an unexpected frost, it's gratifying! Where is the time when the Touny gave himself famous colics by devouring to satiety the peaches of the counter-span?...

....Good news from Athens, where George did not get anything from his Greeks. It was well to predict! Where would they take that gold that they are being asked for? I am sure there is no trace of it in their trunk. (This is Marcel Hersent) I'm very quiet, he won't move. But our great men are still preparing to leave the square and evacuate everything they can by the suitcase. (cadla diplomatic suitcase) I was taking out three beautiful carpets that would probably have made the customs go down.

Meanwhile I'm taking care of our future app. ....I got their agreement (Chedals) I've been looking after Mr. Dobelmann this week, this friend of the Bousquet, whom your dear Father knew well, a director of several real estate companies, who has examined the lease, was visiting the appt., developed many things at best for our interests. I will sign the leases when I return from Vierville. To reduce our taxes, we have distributed them: for your great ones, 16.000F 3.800F heating charges – for me 10.000F 2000 F of charges, 2000 F of heating. This will reduce my expenses, which increased every year. I don't remember if I told you last week that having no lease, I didn't need to notify six months in advance, but only three months. My own. He was well advised to tell me, of course, but he suggested that I had six months so that I was on 15 July with two rents on my back. Thanks to Dobelman I was informed and I had time to give leave before 1ir April. It would be too long to tell you the little trick of ..c. . that this dirty Pourcheroux wanted to play me at the last moment, but he was dealing with a big part and Dobelman sent him the usher on Friday 31. I am now immune from any surprise...
......I was busy with all these things, I was also sheltered at the good friend Bousquet, a big package that could not stay at my place during my absence. It was part of what Beaujon had given me out for fear of a search and that because of the difficulties of government and thinking about an accident that could always happen I had not put in shelter in my safe of the bank. So it is in a chest of the Mines of Sidi Bou Aouane, 35 St Dominique Street in a sealed package in my name, and that if need be, we will give it to your sister Suzanne. I will carry the rest to the chest and to the grace of God!

.....on going to my house new I was in front of the German embassy, rue de Lille. It is guarded by a gang of agents, and every corner of the street has a dozen people on the lookout. There are fears about the anti-Semitic persecutions that everyone blames here: Bishop Verdier all the first, our parish priest, in the chair, brilliantly defended the oppressed last Sunday. I think the Boches took a step forward.

Our rulers make others, and the budget stays on hold. What a gabegie! All this does not prevent women from getting beautiful with the sun coming. We always see as many small hats as I will name bibis, on the side of the female skulls, to wonder how it holds, but I also saw elegant qqs with high caps, wider at the bottom than at the top, a little shape of the flower pot turned!, raised even higher from behind, and with small edges, very little depressed that cast by the great modist Agnes and which, I suppose, will soon remove all the votes. The chekiahs (this is a way for Paulette to use those of her fiancé) have already passed in the public domain.

Wednesday, April 19, 1933

……I've been seeing the Vignet, it has undergone a famous cleaning since last year, the old apple trees have been rejuvenated by a scholarly cut made by specialists from Lisieux. 450 ! good wood fagots and some big branches will make a nice fire this winter (the apple wood is light-flavoured). I have 10 young plants of "Big Wood" replanted, well grafted and very sheltered by trellies, cows that will come to feed the grass. Next winter qq bags of good fertilizer will revive the grass which is a little lean. Finally the old trees carefully scratched will be chauled; if, after that we do not have apples.... it will not be my fault....

....I have so many resources in our dear little corner that I know nothing from outside than by the Mons. There seems to be few people at the sea and they must be frozen there for 2 days with this little wind which must slip through all the cracks. The church was far from being full on Easter Day at the great Mass where our parish priest is given a little too long in pulpit, but on Good Friday it was good to gather there in almost solitude that allowed a good meditation.

Leterrier came to introduce me to his daughter's fiancé, a young farmer with a gentle and intelligent look. The wedding will be for the month of October.nd A child, a daughter, and the old man is the father of a little girl whom he declares not to be of him, but of the old baker. This did not prevent him from celebrating such a wonderful event of coffee.

Jacqueline de Bughas is set up at the Than mansion with her husband and her 2 children to help the old lady of Villedon to receive qq English, as the Countess of Goussencourt would say!!!.

I told you that I have had a little bit of a break – with regret – but we must recognize it, with good reason, that we are seeing the sea of the windows of the 1st century.ir This was no longer possible last year.

The old uncle is always delighted with his stay in Nice, which is again in holidays, it does not end!

Paris26April1933Wednesday

….(in Vierville) .the wind of NE blowing with rage and bringing in at times large showers of hail or even snow. I trembled for the beautiful harvest of fruit that seemed well compromised, but it was advanced enough, at least in large part, that everything was not lost, as for apple trees to cider, in good normans that they are, they had not yet come out of their beautiful flowery adornment. I congratulate them, they are wise. I'm here with a beautiful Vignet... but this year's rent will have passed!... With the closing costs: walls, barrier, fence of the pond and on the field at the end of the property, these are quite high expenses and I regret that the exchange commission still does not allow my ecus to be released.ir June Martin will have more than 2500 pesos of mine!

....I saw our friends from Mons, Denise whose husband took care of advertising and got the representation in the Calvados's delegation. Our 4 boys had little to do with their great joy; there was no mistake, the 2 great ones are reasonable enough now to stop the imagination of Jean-Pierre and Patrice's complacent submission, Philou's authority asserts. We have travelled the property of St Sever by the menu, we dream of making a plan !... and as there is a 115 hectares of work will not be missed, but we often deplored, together, the absence of the two Cordelle.... ;

...we took the way back to Paris at noon on a crowded train: in Caen we have fortunately added 4 cars to allow the passengers to sit down.. and the railways claim not to do their business.
....I will return to Lamballe Avenue to make the last preparations, there are two months left; and a lot to do. I will take advantage of this change to restore many things, carpets, hangings, furniture, bedding, then there will be installation of electricity, and the necessary costs for any move in the new apartment. I will only do what is strictly necessary before I leave for Vierville....
...You will soon celebrate the 3 years of the childhood comrade whose malicious smile still illuminates 2 eyes always ready to find the right joke to make. The enlargements of Roca Street are really delicious...The Jean-Paul is a love with his hair cut, he is so much more boy like that....

... Ms Bacquemard is here for 1 month, she would bring me two beautiful copies of Greuze and Quentin-Latour, if I hadn't had all the costs that await me I might have let myself try a nice portrait of Molière, but it can't be said. She sells this 400F! It's not expensive.. If only Martin could send me my funds....

Bros finished his command in Cherbourg; he was lucky not to have any serious accidents (I think he was a sailor) He himself said that it was only a stroke of luck. He was asked to extend his stay until September, all going at once, and he trembled not to be as lucky; he was at this moment making steps to be appointed to the Joan of Arc and would then leave in October for 9 months, we do not know where, everything will depend on the credits, which do not seem exaggerated this year....
...Of course, Lamballe Avenue is far from the woods than Longchamp Street, and the corner of La Muette is less pretty than the one of the Dauphine Gate, you can't have everything. The neighborhood is very airy and I don't need to move.

....I'm very happy that my Francis is back, it's a vein, you can confess....

ParisSaturday, May 6, 1933

....well, back from Vierville for 15 days, it's beautiful, even hot – 16° to 20° at my window – we're gradually taking off all the hot skins, and God knows if the Nany has any of them. The big Ph. is swimming from morning to night, with his golf panties, and as it can no longer be asked to put him in short panties (it's absolutely ridiculous) I'm going to go looking for a long panties of light flannel. This time ...Suzon will raise his arms in the sky by seeing at the station the young man who will wait there.
The fate is cast, I signed this week our 2 leases, and I have in my pocket the key to our appts that I had the pleasure of visiting more at my ease. I really believe we will be there...The dear neighborhood that awaits me, m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m I think I'll ship a lot of books to Vierville and everything that's worth it and can't get into my new home, smaller than this one. I'll give it or I'll sell the rest. ....decidally the attic will still have nice days for our boys.

...summer seeing tantine, always smiling, tea, interesting music, all his children are fine but Robert, forced to settle at the tax 35 000F of backwards, is very sick. So many others with him! The crisis is acute here, we are nearing the appalling misery, we never relieve enough, it is very sad. The tax has just sold, to pay for it, the furniture of brave people I know...It takes money to his state majesty, and it takes it everywhere. My taxes for Vierville are increased by more than 400F, what will those of Paris be?......I don't know if I told you that all the car accessories of Robert Challier's garage were sold. It didn't work at all, which was not surprising, the uncle who had installed them, ate there 200,000F. Little Claude didn't look good, she drew for her father, and her husband seeks to place what I don't know. It's gratifying. Thank the sky, my dear children, for being safe from these worries!

...I need to tell you again my joy in receiving the positives and pictures of the little ones......The photographs of the A dock were also very interested, and Flondrois at his last visit did not tire of trying to discover old knowledge, even among the pebbles....Thank you again, my good children, for having worked for me.And your sourette, little Maine? I hope that it is all right, Simon ms says good. It is a chance. We have more than 7,000 servants without a place in Paris but as most of them are in the relief of unemployment, they are not in any hurry to take up work. It's a shame that Suzon can't bring back the two of hers, which she's very satisfied with.

....I didn't hear from Orléans, or from Emile, in Vierville. I think I'll go back there again before the holidays – the master's eye!

Paris17May1933Wednesday

....I saw the mover recommended by Mr. Batifol, he takes me 700F to bring the furniture from Lamballe, it is not excessive. He asks for 2 days. J. also saw the carpeter for the transformation of my large curtains. The plan that I sent you will inform you; there is only a large bay of 2 meters in each room, it gives a lot of light, but it also requires large modified curtains. The administrator m.a. granted all the modifications that I asked for in the app. And I agreed with the painter who has to lay papers at the expense of the Society. I'll put 10F per roll, I'll put it a little bit more so that it's okay. I've also been to "L-A-furnishment" who had provided us with the current furniture; they're the same owners, we'll refurbish the office chairs and the sofa, without changing the velvet that's still very good, etc....

....In addition to all these arrangements we will also have to deal with the one of Uncle Robert who decides to take a room with entrance and bathroom at the family home in Ateuil where I told you that Tantine had already held a similar accommodation. I ran pretty well for it this week, because it does not happen, you think so without any steps to the administration of the case, and visits to the said house, which are far away from one another. I am glad that he also has a permanent and pleasant lodging. It is not a work but a company that has installed near the Porte d'Auteuil, 2 steps from the Wood, for people of a certain world and of a certain age a building including housing with hot water all year round, electricity, heating, and where it can take its meals, to (following the accommodation more or less large) 800 to 1000F per month, all included, less room service. There is billiard room, library, tea room, music, reading or rest rooms, even a cinema room, elevators. Breakfast is carried in the rooms, and if we leave more than 2 days the food is refunded 12F a day. We must furnish, but the old uncle has everything it takes to install comfortably. You will admit that we will not miss the task, because we cannot let poor Uncle do it alone. By the way, would he manage? He thinks he will leave Nice on 25 May to get to Paris where he would arrive on 1st May.ir June. By the time he was installed, he would go to Passy Hotel, Passy Street.

I saw Blanche Duchemin this week, she leaves for Grandcamp where Peter finished the church bell tower. This will serve at the same time as a lighthouse for fishing boats that will find their refuge more easily.

....In the Verdon, everything is finished, the station, a road, a small bridge, from L. is director with Planchon under his orders, Vallée is at the office of Paris, Sagne in Madagascar, their furniture to both still in their houses of Verdon. Chalon will have been able to fit his protégés while the engineers and employees of Pirée were liquidated little by little. J-ai knew by Sauze who came to see me yesterday with his wife, that he was in Madeira for work. Beautiful country that is better than Madagascar. J-a-d'ai to the news one of these days. Beaujon has taken over the office, but there is very little to do.

Sauze is still at Homet alone with an accountant, the business gives small profits but does not cost anything. The most beautiful marine station in the world will finally be ready on 1ir June, but this is reduced to a minimum. .................... had its own authority over the wreckage of the Atlantic, which occupies a good place on the deep water dock. Insurance claims that the wreckage was removed from the South Atlantic, but insurance claims further expertise to determine whether it would cost no less to repair the ship than pay for it and deliver it to demolitionrs, and this will last a long time at the expense of the port which is very embarrassed. Sauze and many others with him claim that the disaster is irreparable, that it is pity to see all the bridges, the bridges, the hull itself, twisted and bossed by fire. The demolition itself is almost impossible, and would then remain the only solution to go down, off, what remains of this magnificent ship.

The experts, and the judges, do not question the malice that caused the disaster. It is not a pleasure. Everything that happens in us and in Germany is hardly any more so, and there is real unease on all sides, the cases are getting worse and the rents go wrong. The government and the Chamber are making fun of us.

I'll make you laugh that yesterday when I went to the Post Office to get my PTT bonds, the employee said unsatisfiedly that he would pay me by 25 and as I replied then, very angry about the rest, that I didn't intend to spend my days at the Post Office, he replied that after touching the 25 coupons allowed, I had only to take the line of customers...to start again if the heart m'en said. After that, pull the ladder!! I replied that when the state had taken my money, it had not stipulated so many Chinese, and an old man who followed me made chorus saying loudly that from this step he would get rid of all that he had lent to the state that f.s. from us. Discontent is manifested everywhere, and fortunately we start to show the teeth. I ended up getting paid at once my 40 CQFD coupons.

...a note from my parish priest telling me of Mrs. Lebastard's death; I immediately telegraphed to her husband, I send you the letter I received this morning, I am moved by tears....it is so rare of such friendships....

Paris31May1933Wednesday

...Tomorrow I want to put a little bit of order and classify different things that I want to take with me to Vierville on Saturday, because the boys having 4 days of vacation, and I have to go see again what is going on there before the holidays, we all leave Saturday – including Tattoo – for the old house. J-d will take advantage of it to bring your dear Father's business, clothes, papers that must not hang out in small speed with what will take refuge in Vierville, everything that can't fit into the apartment of l-v. The boys torment me so that in another trunk they take the railways and other toys that they no longer have fun and that they will be happy to find there. ...

...it will be necessary to re-enter all the papers of Father's office one by one, in order to destroy all those who are neither memories nor useful, I intend to put the books back into the library as Father had arranged them....All this will take a little time, it just remains enough to be about free at the time of Suzon's arrival which will be there around the 20th with the Bison. I had good news of the trio yesterday...... the Diplomate(Marcel Hersent) had to empty the place, without having been able to get anything else that Georges had had, it seemed much more kind at the end of his stay, the boy decidedly came around! It is true to say in his discharge that it is his uncle Georges (Hersent) who, it seems, is the most intransigent in this matter and never stopped stinging so that he would go back to the Greeks.... (I knew that by Beaujon that I was seeing on Sunday), those have the beautiful part, it is the "right of the prince" and there is nothing to do to force them to execute. Marcel understood it well, assured Beaujon and he did not leave for Piraeus until his defending body. It is a pity that your great ones did not know that; for poor Georges was well discouraged in front of the attitude of the boss, who seemed to be making a clever pleasure to get him out of the wickedness. He would probably go back to those that his uncle did not care for him, Beaujon said. Finally, after inviting your big ones to dinner at the Gde Bretagne, and even being very kind, he was preparing to leave......

...I hope that you're all in good health, that Pitone is more cold, Michou more pink than nature. (he had a yellowishness), François always wise and Titoune always scum (I think I was enjoying overthrowing my brothers' inklings), while the parents' quartet laughs at life. If only it was allowed in a wink to make sure of this as soon as we wanted it ! and what did I have a fairy-mother !

....I hope the sun will laugh in Normandy, the garden must be filled with roses and eyelets, I have embalmed copies in the basket of every week.....(this suggests that Leon regularly shipped a crate of vegetables or various fruits)

...So I went to see the Beaujon on Sunday... Beaujon has a terrible mine. (he had just been very sick) And it's very good, he said, he came from Belgium... and goes every afternoon to his office. It seems that we are in the mood for a lot of work, because there is no more work, the Verdon is finished, well done, we must have the underground shops of Toulon (hein Maine?, if you were there!) and we always put on the Loire Valley and Madagascar. Hebert returned from Funchal, less delighted than I thought....

....Seems Mrs Cordelle and Mrs Batifol. The first second the modist who chews delicious little bibis that are furious with wool, silk, or even some kind of straw; they do this very well. The little Aline Dessus was named as a great pump in St Cloud last week, there was a very nice reception, and Jean Fabre was the godfather of heroin that is beautiful and grows like a fungus.

...A word from Tantine told me Monday evening at 7 o'clock that she had just received 2 orchestral chairs for the Opera where the Barbier of Seville was played. I let myself be tempted and in less time than it takes to write I had eaten and endorsed a little less slender frusques. Excellent evening, the B. de S. was completely reworked by Jean Chant oats while keeping Rossini's score.........Pernet had made the character of Dom Basile, the Jesuit, an incredible figure. He had a crazy success in his calomnia ariet which he had bled; I had never seen the Opera in such a delirium, a day of subscription especially where it is good to show up, and where all the dressing rooms, the famous basket and the orchestra chairs are full of beautiful ladies in large toilets, with beautiful jewels, and men in clothes (we counted the tuxedos). What from back to air...all that dragging dresses, the pleasure of the eyes was double; since during the only intermission there was such a beautiful spectacle in the room. I had long seen so many....
Tantine leaves for Normandy on Saturday, she will only return to Spain with Robert, his wife and daughter. This one takes 6 weeks off and will take a long ride in this country that l ́enchants....
A word from the old tonton dated Grenoble announces his departure from Nice which he already regrets. He was cold in Grenoble, and had to put his overcoat, it spoiled the promenade of the Gde Chartreuse. He will be here tomorrow, and will go down to the hotel waiting for his installation rue de Chanoz, which will not be done before August since he waits for me to be in Vierville to take the furniture he needs.

The Book Day has just taken place, the booksellers were offering a printed book on this occasion to any buyer above 20F, my bookseller left one for a purchase of 15F (The War Journal of the Princess of Croy), it is not beautiful and not worth those of last year....
....It seems that the day of the Book was very bad for sale, I am not surprised, we will all be putting under the burden... you will read in the Morning meetings and protests of taxpayers. We are seriously talking about doing the tax strike, it would be difficult to pursue 100,000 recalcitrant taxpayers. On Sunday, when I came back from Beaujon's house, I saw a car full of policemen coming out of Jacquier's house, the budget rapporteur, whose home had been invaded with good spirits by some twenty taxpayers who had settled at his house, in order to "take advantage of his luxury that they were paying".nd.

....I chose the papers of my new apartment....we set up a fireplace in the living room (no more) a large closet in the office, electrician will carry my devices, all this is busy and it's better because I have a heart full of regrets....

...Thanks for the engravings of the newspaper, I found myself there quite well. Pier A is really beautiful, we can see that it was us who did it – except for my Jean, I understand your contentment to be well drawn from it, with profits- That's the trick.

Paris15June1933Thursday

...the wood, the gardens, the squares are of all beauty, so green, so well cared for, and all the Parisians are pimping, it is the moment of great elegance and the beautiful receptions follow, it is said, not so much in the privates who, even wealthy, can but, in the circles, the societies, the theatres frequented by the people of the world. J-en echoes, here, and the newspapers make appear some pretty successful engravings. For my daughters I will say that the great hats have all the favors and the great pilgrims of silk, of piqué, of organdi....

...a good letter from Suzon,... I expect that they will be there at the end of next week....the great Georges changed his batteries, and instead of going to live in Great Britain, in Athens where he would have been very hot, he will organize himself in one of the houses of foreman, empty since the departure of these and the young engineers who remained there. It is admirably located on a rock, on the seaside, it will certainly be better than in the Athenian furnace. The accountant and his family still live a house nearby. There will be a beautiful room, a large laundry room where he will take his tub, and the greatest tranquility to rest there at noon and put on a pajamas in the evening – instead of tuxedo at the Gde Bretagne. Your dear Father had suffered a lot from his 2 trips to Greece in the middle of summer in 1923. We know unfortunately what, because I am convinced that he was too tired and therefore less resistant to the evil which took him away.

Your older men are very welcome before they leave...I expect to find Suzon very tired, it is true that she will have the 3 days of train with a forced rest that will do her good. As for Georges, I think he will come in August, with the rest of what will remain, qq pounds with an armchair that he will keep in his house. But he already knows that he will have to go back in October and for several months, with perhaps less disappointing solution for the settlement of the works, I would like it, because he deserves it after these 9 years of work there.

.....The old uncle is fine, he is a little bit against the variable climate of Paris and he still regrets the blue sky of Provence. His installation on Chanoz is more than a matter of days and as I will ship to Vierville various things that I cannot put in here, this one will bring him the furniture of his bedroom, the secretary and various trinkets that will make him find himself well at home. Tantine will return from Ouistreham where she is at the Massart, these days to move also before leaving for Spain with Robert, his wife and the little........... Beautiful hike; the peseta has declined and life is so cheap there that they will have more advantages than staying in France. The artist promises beautiful satisfactions.

.......I understand my Jean, the pleasure you will have to show Maine these African corners where you lived; and the idea of your trip to France with stop in Senegal and Morocco is a good idea. You can present your wife and your son to Uncle Emile, but what will Aunt Martha say? – Of course to the thought that maybe next year I will see you all 3, already scaffolding projects....I like to think about it from time to time, but without setting a date, I know too well that in the Hersent house we do what can....

...The SPR (Society of the Port of Rosario) I think it's a good thing that we had to spend some time, but as I said in one of my last letters, we seem pretty quiet about the final result, Beaujon even said that at 18,000F the stock had to buy them, they have great reserves.

Paris29JuneThursday1933

I'm writing you in a hurry in a messy apartment full of crates and packages, because the moment is approaching when you'll have to leave. Monday we come to take everything that goes to Vierville; these are mostly books, qq tumblers, among others the multicolored Delft garnish that was on the dining room fireplace and that must take place on the large antique furniture at the bottom of the stairs...... J-a tidy all day yesterday all the papers of your dear father's office...I had never touched there. There was a personal correspondence of classified cases that I reviewed without finding anything to keep....all documents carefully stored in boxes by Father himself leave intact for Vierville where you can consult them on occasion...
All this will happen in Vierville on Tuesday, where Martha will take delivery,
Wednesday the truck back from Ch. ( ?? Vierville?) The house is filled with roof workers in the cellar. Tantine will not be able to move there until she leaves for Spain, which is set at 1ir July. She goes there in car at 82 years old! with Robert, his wife and Micheline. Claudine and her husband will therefore transport the street d'Assas rue de Chanoz. What a mess!
....Suzon is active in making her installation finish. She is more and more delighted with my choice. I am not angry with it. My new home is ready, a rubber has passed there and he revels like a new penny; on the other hand, it is hideous as it is....there is nothing unpleasant to live in such a disorder.

...Suzon has done some photos of the appt. but it's hard to catch a piece of furniture, it's dark, and there's no step back. Finally the corner of your dear Father's office where he worked so often stays well. ...Can't take in the living room and dining room.....

Paris8July1933 – 27 BC of Lamballe – Friday

....I would like to thank you both for your compulsion about the money that you have so affectionately taken the trouble of sending. You understood that your old mother would prefer to draw from her purse than from yours. .....Je wrote by this mail plane to Martin to make 1875 pesos available to Jean Cordelle.....Thank you again, thank you both, my two great sons....The check contained in your letter my Jean had to be touched by the care of Bousquet who will give 9900F to the Cr. Ind. and Com., this to avoid that the fisc is doing me qq days! (we never know!) I'm not bored.

... I am writing you from Lamballe where we have been sleeping since yesterday, after a move that lasted 2 days. There was a moment of real emotion for me to leave the street of L. , I left after melancholy having seen all the rooms where we had all lived, and I closed the door with a prayer on my lips and at the bottom of the heart. May God protect you all, my dears,...

So here we are and already the apartment is very nicely turned, it is no longer convenient to live, with all the facilities that it has, the 2 rooms living room and office are very nice, the furniture more valuable than street of L., but I could not despite my desire to reconstruct as close as possible the installation of Father, it could not be.

...I would like to see in pictures my 2 girls in fur coats, what they must be chic. We leave tomorrow July 10 for Vierville....

Vierville20 July1933

.....we have a splendid and warm weather......the evenings and nights always stay cool and pleasant. Poor Suzon says not so much in Paris, where she struggles in all her frenzy, well arrived, without too much break. She left with his maid (a young girl found in Paris and who seems nice) on Sunday, in a bus, then a train crowded by the transfuges of the bridge of 14 July.......When Georges arrived in Paris, they will settle down a little less briefly so that the fall of September is not too laborious; For it is not to be counted that Georges will remain for more than a month; he is in a thousand troubles with the Greek gulf, to change...
Here......I had a nice fear with Jean-Pierre yesterday, who made a nasty fall of bicycle on the boulevard de la mer. He got pulled without any break, but with strong abrasions everywhere, which he had to vigorously treat to avoid an infection always possible. He was very brave and tightened his teeth without yelling when I administered him widely the diode dye... he is ground today and resting while Philou and the Bison accompanied by Tatou went to take their bath. They took it all week, with the friends Collières. I was delusional watching them smack like fish, recognizing my four boys... from last year. There are no days without us talking about the rest of the dear little ones from last year, to regret their absence. .......By fixing the Club (the window will be laid when Georges is there because I have only a poor confidence in Leberruyer) we would remember last year's sessions, we also talked about the John Paul who would be admitted next year, despite the insistence of the only girl who claims to keep him for herself!...
.....I can admit that I had a real physical and moral depression on my way here. Undoubtedly, the counter-turn of this departure from L. Street and the resulting fatigue. I was grumbling in petto to be unable to fight against this failure. It was necessary to let go the days, the peace of the old house....

I'm painting the greenhouse, at this point, going to the minium, putting back broken or missing windows and then painting with what the City of Paris uses for the metro. It's a matter of at least 700F but it's not worth it; it's not about letting such a piece be damaged. So your 10,000F check is welcome to pay for this new expense that could not be remitted to next year. I will then have to have the roof and some fence walls that need the masonry reviewed. There was also some damage done without any glaring at the end of the road that goes to the sea. I think he's got the name of the offender, and he's the successor of Mrs. Bouet, the villa on the top of the cliff, an engineer. It's possible, but he's not a very high man. I'll have him carry my commission by Mr. Pommier, because I think I'll go see this one in two or three days. I'm waiting for my driver... the faithful Dagoubert who has restored the car. It's the great Philou who is now taking care of the water engine, and that with a lot of order and care. ...he's been helping with a thousand little things in the house. Jean-Pierre is more fantastic, he excels in cleaning windows or coppers... because one can get dirty with excess, but he is also full of inventions not without value for the arrangement of things.

.....I saw our friends from Mons, he has a scary look, Jacques is there with his wife. Denise watches his marmaille a lot in good little mom that she is. Collières is not very happy with his things, but he is still so courteous. The Heudrie waits for their children, but they are rather badly served and that they miss in their big villa.

Overview ....our parish priest always faithful to the post and verbose in his preaching.

….Many, many This is due to the cold winter that has damaged the many insects that are damaging the trees. We are picking plums, apricots and peaches in the basket! It was not seen for a long time. ….

Vierville3August1933Wednesday

Nothing from you this week, my darling children, and I received yesterday a letter from Martin y Cia and Rodriguez, dated July 5th... it's so long when the week passes without your I hope you're all right in your two houses!
....good weather cut off from a good rain that lasted all night and allowed to interrupt the waterings. It was time, the well was dry.....Since the good flood the flowers are brighter than ever...our baskets are once again very successful in judging by the admiration that the view of them aroused by the Parisians on the road. The climbing roses are covered with red balls, and the iron umbrella, on the left when entering, finally s的enguirland! of the roses that had been planted at his foot..........Never I saw so many kernel fruits, and some of the Magdalene pears with succulent pears gave us full baskets...

.....progress in swimming is sensitive, and Suzon herself has thrown herself in the water with Denise de Mons (Collections) They don't come back from their attendance. Collières is there for a decade; he doesn't seem to be very busy, and this year he's without his car...Jacques left yesterday with his wife, in her, for Brittany, where they will spend 2 months in her family.
We had everyone to have tea, and I also received the visit of Bournonville (she: Mr.Th. de Rampan) really very simply.
Mr de Mons is very ill at the point of a sciatica, he has a scary look, and as our good Lebastard has just had some kind of congestion and his daughter is speaking with reason to take her with her this winter to Caen where she is a teacher, I anticipate a probable change in the administration of our little commune. Mr de Mons is well unable to fulfil all his duties as mayor without the help of his deputy and secretary who does about everything. And it's a pity because I don't see – apart from Leterrier – who could fulfill the role of mayor. He might be allowed to do it, but his wife is inflexible and doesn't want to hear about it.
We will go to the La Heudrie on Sunday, and we will take Mr de Mons and Denise by car, Collières will walk and Madame de Mons always valiant on a bicycle. The de La Heudrie are also on foot, I said. It is really not convenient, and I do not understand that they were not even a small horse. It is true that he died of fear when he drove.

...That same Friday I saw Mr. Pommier about the field of your elders, and stopped with him proposing 1⁄4 discount (which is what goes on) but telling the farmer that it was the only concession I would make. This one came from the rest of the term due in June. Pommier will follow the funds to the account of the great Jean rue de la Pompe, by deducting the taxes paid by him and the % of his management.

....our old house is quite pretty, I brought back carpets that I laid in the hall of the staircase, I took advantage to make the floor wax, it's much more neat. The polychrome Delft trim of the dining room of the street of L. makes very good on the old furniture of Brittany...
.....I have also brought back books, Father's papers, trinkets, all of which require many storages that are not yet finished (I expect the great George for the books) all of this still drags into the billiard room, which I fear will not be arranged this year. With this the rattan furniture has required a new painting this year, and I realized that many of the large curtains have linings eaten by the sun, which go in crumbs as soon as they touch them.

...we haven't gone to Bayeux yet...

....I will send you this week a financial journal with an article on the port of Rosario and an engraving of the port of Verdon. The one at Cherbourg was inaugurated this week in great pomp. The Autonomous Port of Bordeaux must die from jealousy. Levavaseur was to the honor. It was said – about this last one – that it would remain the Abbey of Longues (near Commes), bought by a rich American.

...Ballès gives the kids gym lessons. The girl always gives thanks. I'm running away, it's time...

Vierville25 Aug1933Friday

....an English mail leaves tomorrow for BA de Cherbourg, I would not have kept missing it, because our correspondences are very disoriented......or said passing the letters of street Roca are rare, fortunately that the big sister is not avarous about her prose and often speaks to me about you, otherwise I could believe you lost in the middle of the Pampa! ...

...all health is good, because I am silent about the stomach of the great Phil, probably due to the absorption of apples and green pears. It must be admitted that it is tempting when crossing the vegetable garden to smack with qq fruits. It was necessary to resort to the syrup castor oil! (horror) ......What is more annoying is the bite made by a mosquito or fly to Martha's finger. L-animal had to feed, before, on qq carrogne, because the finger, then hand, then the front arm swollen in qq hours. A vigorous medication of Dr.Brée, as he knows how to do, may have stopped the evil, fortunately, you know what, my Simon, with our Francis. ...

....the sun soon reappeared, the baths are resumed and the sessions at the beach too. To escape the barracks of Legallois I made a small path in the cliff at the bottom of my plot, there is a small platform where one discovers a splendid view of the tip of the Perceived, and even from Barfleur on clear time until Ver. It is very beautiful and it comes out of the grenillère of the bottom of the coast very unpleasant in this month of August, there is a crazy world this month. We already go back and the month of 7bre will be charming for those who remain. For my part, I would like time to stay here until All Saints.

....Revu Marcel Parmentier with whom we were taking tea at the Batifol, where there was a great reception. They are really nicely installed in this beautiful house of Mme. de Niverlais, well abandoned and poorly maintained, but where there would be something to do very good, because the park has beautiful frieds – they are not worth those of the castle d'Aignerville which the Prevost of Marchais, cousins of Choute de Gourcuff and of Sainte-Marie whom we had met at the Heudrie and who had invited us to come to see them. We went there with the Collières house, and were very kindly received. The Louis XIV castle with roofs at the Mansart still kept its moat and beautiful remains of an older castle. We accessed it, from the Rte Nle of ParisCherbourg by a splendid double avenue of qq 500m and the park behind is worthy of Versailles, it was designed by Le Nôtre and preserved its well-French way, but the trees became huge and they are only crumbling and magnificent avenues. The property is of a capacity of 300 ha—a nothing! The living room where we were received...

...Revu also "La Lanterne", this little castle of St Pol in Cricqueville (near the peak of the Hoch, shaved in 44) The owner, who is still the same, did nothing to beautify, and it's dirty and almost delabrated, there would be a patron with taste, and it's a pity that the friend Flondrois has not decided. If his park in Stang Ar Lin has much charm and the view he enjoys hardly equal, his house is only a villa without style that has nothing to do with the little "cracqueville folly". I think it's with you, my Jean, that we were visiting. I had a good time about the toilets, because I had to play my buying role until the end. The owner didn't change anything, and told us,... as in the past, that he wanted to keep the style It would be worth being more modern and so much to do, I would appreciate even more the famous chairs....

Old Lestienne sold his house just 110,000F, and he used the money back to buy an old hotel in Bayeux, on behalf of his new governess, a former cook of the Stones.

Here's all the news, my darlings..

....This is the old tonton who came here, he has moved into his new home, but it wasn't without trouble, the business was too good, the developers are in trouble..d-money naturally what delays the completion of this phantom. Finally, the old tonton is still happy to find himself in his furniture. Their removal emptied the room they were moving on and I am considering a facility of couches where our boys could all be together. It would be nicely fun, isn't it, my dear?

...Tantine is in Brittany with Micheline resting from the fatigues of her trip and... taking baths.. at 82 years!

...I'm very sorry that the Mafia's troubles are not over for our old friends Martin, it must be terrible to always tremble for his own.

ViervilleFriday, September 15, 1933

The good news was waiting for us here, little Maine, as we were returning from Stang Ar Lin where we had been spent two days, so you must think what she unleashed with joyful exclamations ....(hope for birth: Jean-Louis H. for February 34)

.....we came back last night from Brittany, by train – because the beautiful neighborhood of qq 100,000Fnous had led painfully Monday until the end. The good "Tio Mio" was sorry, we spent 2 days excellent in his pretty property. The house is full of beautiful things....We did a nice walk on the yacht without our stomach suffering.

....good news of Georges who has not suffered too much from the Greek sun, I do not know if we should rely on him now because the Port commission seems willing to execute – at least in part – for the settlement of accounts, this is not the time to miss such an opportunity., nor to make the disdainful.

I see only fathers of unsettled families, some of real value. J. knows one who to feed his family started to cultivate the land himself, without help, "at least we eat!"He had been thanked for his employment (after 15 years of presence) and a notice of 6 months, without he being able to find anything else in the meantime....

Vierville28Sept.1933Thursday

...the great Georges finally arrived before last night with Suzon who had been waiting for him for 4 days in Paris. They left on Sunday with "toda la familia", so that Bison who had to make her school debut the next day would not arrive late at the high school; the director having declared in a peremptory tone in Suzon that if she was not on the 2nd in the morning she would not admit it - sweetness of current official! -This therefore deprives me of 2 good days of meeting – the boys returning only on the 6, we were decided to stay here until 4. ....

.... Simon's flight letter dated 15th, arrived here on 26, very quickly; it warns us that the great and beautiful day of communion of our two darlings will take place on Sunday. With which heart I will accompany you all with my prayers and what regret to be able to be close to my dear little ones at the Holy Table. I will telegraph tomorrow....

...we are going to go through the storage of books with Georges... I would like to take advantage of your elder's presence to see if everything is in order. Here we can see, both in the house and elsewhere, traces of ..let's put: seniority...it's good that I know if this has any drawback for the proper maintenance and preservation of our home.
George arrived with a ministerial signature that gives him the surest hope for an unhoped-for payment of 12 million drachmas, or about 2 million francs. He has the smile and I hope that he will be taken into account in Paris where Georges can help Suzon to the bulk of their installation, and as he must return to Athens on the 25th, I will return to Paris to see him before his departure, abandoning my plan to stay here until All Saints.

Tonton is still there, he's going to go back tomorrow; so I'm going to be alone in the big house. Fortunately, there's all the storage and covers to put on, it's not a little work but it will take me away; and I'll feel less the great silence after the joyful screams and the noise of the broad strides of the boys and the girl who is falling down as fast as her brothers, on the stairs unless she slides on the ramp. Very funny girl and I wonder if your second one will look like her.
We feast on pears leaving the apples that are starting to fall. Georges, who has an excellent camera on my prayer, took some trees from the vegetable garden so that you do not tax us exaggerating to their production. These are exposed trees. The potato harvest is such an abundance that I will send to Paris.

...We enjoyed yesterday a civet of park rabbits that the brave Dubois had brought, they claim that the Fossé Gras is holding some hares, I am afraid not to see the tail...

Vierville13 October 1933

...my loneliness ?? Am I really alone in the old house where I find you all in all The corners? and as I bless the dear Daddy for having set us up this refuge to which you all come back with pleasure, even from the end of the world. ....I am now in my small apartments (which will be yours in the spring, is it possible?) . It is very good and as time remains delicious, there is no need for a flare, the sun enters through the large open windows from where I discover all the dahlias' bed still in bloom, and a beautiful row of golden clusters that you do not know and which are along the small bottle of pines under the window of the blue room. On the morning of my bed, I fully enjoy this beautiful countryside, the wood is stained with red, but it is still very hardy, around 7h1/2 dc. See 1 or 2 squirrels that jump on the lawn having probably made their breakfast with the last nuts of the big walnut near the tower of l'abbé and turn back snack qq chestnuts at the other end of the wood. The whirlwinds and 2 grives perch on the trees in front of me, without any apprehension....

...The club window is laid, it's a delight that this club, you have to tell François, Michel and even Yves, because I had a ramp set up to avoid the accident of the little ones.

...the great ones are moving out, because alas! Georges has seen Marcel again "Hello Mr Chedal, how are you? How is Mrs Chedal? When are you leaving?" It becomes a formula and the poor big s'y still lets it take. So here he is on his way, and I intend to leave TuesdayVierville, with Martha, to see him again before.

...Tantine has just been 81 years old, she has celebrated with a smile, she is settled on Chanoz Street with the old tonton, they are both delighted with their installation and I too. It is the dream when one is their age to be defrayed of any material concern. Tantine has already found excellent musicians, and I will probably attend this winter to good harmony sessions. The inhabitants of this phalunary are very diverse, abbots, nobility, actresses, former officers, and others less well, tantine mécrit that must be chosen, which does not surprise me.
....I have seen our friends from Mons here, several times, it is an act of charity to go to them; he does not move from his room, even from his bed or his chaise longue; finally he suffers less however and I climb up to see him; he is installed in a room with the canvases of Jouy red with characters, with old white lacquered furniture whose bed capitulated was in the same place in 1793 for an old lady of Cauvigny who valiantly passed all the Terror at St Sever while the husband was with the Emigrés.

Guillemette de Pierres came to take tea with me, she bores herself firm, and is concerned about unusual noises that occur every night in Charles's room, their old servant dead last year. The Marquis takes this so seriously that he went to ask for Masses from our parish priest..!! It is not done to make pleasant his daughter stay in Normandy and moreover when you enter these old mansions notice that it really lacks a little comfort. For example there is no water in the house, and for all the needs of the cause, Guillemette de P. It's got to be 25 to 30 meters to get to the nearest pump, and it's not funny for some time.

....Leon comes back with the help of Pompon qq 500 cross-rails of the small train, in excellent condition that I had at good price 0.50F løune, it is for nothing and this makes excellent fence stakes or firewood. The longest will repair the entrance of the Vignet which collapses on the ditch of the road, for qq franc there will be a beautiful bridge that the farmer will help Leon to arrange.

We'll pick up the apples next week, then wait for a few weeks before we get piled. Last year's cider is still excellent. I thought this year of making a 40-packed cider, a year of big harvest we'll make Calvados, I'm right, all that is crazyly interesting. I shipped yesterday a package of beautiful pears to Paris and since I don't want it to lose I have distributed them to the children of the village who are delighted.

I said that the Calvados railway would stop all transport in January and that the station would be handed over to the department and sold. I just wrote to the Prefect. This little house looks good, it is well built, I would rather buy it than see s'y place unwanted Parisians or that Legallois always at the lookout n'y build qq rabbit nest of which it has the secret. It would be an undesirable screw. The neighborhood of the property creates me, M'a told Mons, a preferential right. Let's hope that it is true. I don't think it's expensive, and it could be rented, for example, until they stay with us for many years and they become too old. They've been with us for nine years, it's a lease and we have to take it into account...

Paris21 Oct.1933Saturday

.....Suzon's apartment looks pretty good, but the great George has already gone back, harassed by the constipated (This is Marcel Hersent) And it's a emptiness...

....The books of Father's library were placed exactly as he had placed them himself, I try to reconstruct a little bit the atmosphere of L. Street, more by details than anything else, because the arrangement of the rooms is different....

Paris3nov.1933

....I've been writing to you two weeks by plane, I hope my letters will be well received, this one will take the Massilia – the chascade!

.....the health is good, except for colds, I have naturally tasted it all and this prevented me from carrying out my usual pilgrimages from Toussaint.ir November at Montparnasse cemetery with Suzon and the boys. Grandpa's grave was well abandoned, probably nobody cares more about it. He had to pay for it, I would continue to do it, but doesn't know if I would have the pleasure of my sisters-in-law. As strange as it may seem to you, I don't know their address, Alice by writing me a few months ago kept from mentioning it. It's rather sad. I've sent some beautiful violets to your dear Father and I know that our people are doing a duty to put in the cemetery the most beautiful of their chrysanthemums. It's not always tastefully arranged, but it's better to intend.
I had an appointment on Monday to go with Robert to Orsay but time prevented us, it rained almost every day, and communications were not easy; we must wait long enough for the bus that returns to Paris. I regret not having brought my poor grandma back to Vierville!

Good news of Georges who is still hot and waiting for the divine Marcel these days. This one always filled with his importance is convinced that, like the legendary Roman, it will suffice to arrive! Veremos!

....our facilities are moving forward, and I have little left to do, except the storage cabinets that are still a nameless craving; the guest room (your bedroom!) has not its last appearance, but everything is being cut....

...We didn't leave this week, except for the services at the church that is 2 steps away from us. It hardly resembles the worldly parish of St Honoré d'Eylau, although very well attended as well. It remained the little church of the village of Passy, a little dark, one stowed there with more piety but it would still require a good cleanup. Our parish priest, very old, carries goodness on his face; the ceremonies of the Toussaint were very beautiful.

In fact, our neighbourhood still has small streets worthy of the province, very close to us, begins the Berton Street which passes behind the old house ofBalzac between two long walls that border gardens. There is no car and because of its tiny width does not allow it, it barely reaches the length of my 2 extended arms, ancient bounds staking it, a stream flows in the middle and long drags of ivy and clematites fall from walls to the ground. It is a delicious and little known corner. It will probably disappear soon, and will be overwhelmed by the large buildings growing around like mushrooms.

Suzon who went to rue de L. to look for a box that I had forgotten on a wardrobe in the hallway!! knew by the concierge that not one of the appt. to rent was taken. And I am afraid it would be long enough if the owner did not consent to lower them and have them cleaned. Suzon returned horrified from the dirt in which my was. That does not surprise me. There was for 15,000F of expenses to do if I had stayed and still on condition to not introduce any new comfort. We enjoy all this here, it makes my life very much easier for me. With Martha and the help of a maid who comes 1h1/2 each day, the apartment is fine. It's good to have only one door to warm up to the affectionate atmosphere of your elders.

...Our boys are drawing plans to organize a TSF position. Ah if the Touny were there they say! No doubt we will resort to the science of Hébert that I will convene for tea one of these Sundays.

....I'm glad that the A dock ended in beauty, and I expect you to give a shoulder to finish rounding the other one that doesn't ask for better. It's a blessing than these little anicroches. At the office here, it's the flat calm....Georges had seen Sagne......Suzon wonders what we're going to do with him. Valley is in Toulon, but not absolutely for the Hersent house that does small jobs with a Specialist The Loire Valleys were given to another consortium told Georges. - I'm happy. to see you in Rosario...

Paris17 Nov 1933Friday

...there is an Englishman who leaves tomorrow from Cherbourg for BA, I would like him to take this letter and my little packages, in this case books (oh is varied!) for the feast of my Michou, catalogues to the address of each of your petiots who will undoubtedly delight to choose and admire Santa's toys. J'enrage to be unable to answer their wishes and I wanted to try my luck that would make me pass between the meshes of the customs net. Aunt Suzon strongly disadvises me, she was scalded for nothing, and quoted one of my last shipments at Easter last; qq sugar eggs with a 0,f50 chick for which they had to pay close to 18F customs....There is something to discourage everyone, even the nanies and that's not a little!

...Ms. Saillard had just read a letter plane from her little Maine...As we rejoiced together about the so much desired event. I also believe, my word, that we have made plans for next summer...this is very imprudent with the well-known ways of the House Hersent, I am paid to know it.. But it is so good to scaffold lots of good things... and it is arrival in Marseille, the trip of Toulon, (I will move to the Priory) your mountain installation with all the family including the dear little Paulette. Vierville is case-robbably in the month of August... but all this is still far away and not just sitting down, Av. de Lamballe, we felt like the collapse of a beautiful dream. Let's wait, all this will come! ......

....the crisis is raging more and more, while the new government is looking for a new financial project as overwhelming as the previous ones.

...The dear Marcel, says Mimi, or the Desire, or even the constipated, did not divest himself of a charming good mood and your elder does not return. Naturally his presence does not advance the rules that the Greeks are well decided to drag.

....I am under the blow of a departure for Vierville, the poor of Mons is very bad, we administered it and Jacques left yesterday with his wife. I called (for we have the phone now) to Madeleine de Mons whom I misheard, but who said "I am desperate"....
....I'm afraid of the worst and I'm about to go to the funeral, I owe them that.

This is a death that will question the reshuffle of the city council; I will pass on your resignation in its time. J-a-a-b-b-b-b-c-b-b-b-c-b-b-b-b-c-b-b-c-b-c-d-b-b-b-c-c-b-c-b-c-d-c-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d
If I go to Vierville, I will deal with his new lease, the next 25 Xbre, he has expressed a desire to continue. I do not ask better but I am very afraid that I could not have done it as I could two years ago, increasing the price of the rental. Rural business has been falling sharply for about 18 months.
The apples of the Vignet for our personal use set aside, there are still 12hectolitres that were sold immediately. It is a small result but it is necessary to wait at least 2 years to enjoy the care I made the apple trees last spring, the plant was very neglected.

...It seems that from Lalag. is still in Verdon where there is nothing more to do and where no boat No, no, no!

Paris1ir Dec 33

I'm here with Aunt Suzon to tie my last Christmas packages to your address. I hope they will arrive without any trouble, although they carry some forbidden fruit. I didn't have to make a little use of the Parisian ideas my exiles and I slipped 2 chem. de n. for my daughters in a new Babar at my Jean-Paul's address.......to your address: a package d’imprimés containing the forbidden fruit, a book of Babar for Jean-Paul, 1 alphabet for My brother Yves, this from Nany, 2 other books for the little ones from Aunt Suzon and Uncle Georges - .........

....I think that on Jean-Paul will be very concerned about the beautiful crèche where a very little sheep will wait for his name...Unfortunately the dear comrade will have already fled to the Riachuelo after what Tia Mone tells me...

.......the news of Piraeus is good as health – fortunately!- because the business is less brilliant; the Greeks are against the wall without being able to back off, for all accounts are handed over, but what they will imagine to save time; they say that the end of the year will see the end of the discussions, perhaps! but not payments without doubt.
...G. Pichorel with sepsis dies slowly; the old tonton was very cold, as well as tantine, but they both had Courage I say the courage because they are a little "running always". Besides their family circle contains all the resources, a medical service is installed there, where three times a week the doctor is in his consulting room (10F the consultation). In the meantime it is enough to warn him and he comes for 15F per visit in the apartment. That must make live a young person, and there are lots of people looking for clients, our usual doctors still ask 50F to come to you, so they complain about the lack of customers, they no longer ask them for serious reason. I am delighted to see Robert and Tantine installed in this way every day.

...our boys are fine. JP just got 2nd in Latin – out of 19 – and the girl 11nd Of 120 in French – all 10th students compete together in high school!!Suzon is increasingly concerned about seeing her trample on the spot, and waste her time, but when her majesty decreed that there is no recourse.

....We saw the J. de Mons... Mad. de Mons remained alone in St Sever that she does not want to hear to leave. I had lunch in Fontenay under the woods with the friend Flondrois, and General and Mrs. Curie, cousins of Bousquet. Excellent lunch, very lively, chatting in the library where a fire of big logs was burning. ...

....Flondrian came to Suzon's, and he kindly took us to the Capuchines theatre where we played a magazine "Dirty time", it was not bad, quite minded, especially for political things.

Flondrois announces that the Port of Rosario gives what will be very small, it is still 4000F less for me.

And in the meantime, the government is having fun and doing nothing clean. Everyone is tired of this instability and we are seriously talking about the dissolution of the House. Bousquet is very pessimistic about the business, General Curie claims that we are seriously studying the next war, as for Batiffol who had lunch the other day with Paul Boncour. (a politician in sight at the time) He told us that Germany was arming in turn, that it might not declare war immediately and for cause, but that in 3 or 4 years at the latest it would be better than ready to do so. Bousquet very aware of the purchase of metals knows well that the Boches buy metals by 100,000 tons. All this is not cheerful. Let's hope that the year that comes will be less troubled.
...You're hot and we're gloomy, Suzon protested and she had to get a little bit warmer. I understand that it changes from the Greek sun...

Parissaturday10Xbre1933

As for the date of your trip to France, my dear children, I have lived too much in your life not to know that it will depend solely on the work. Let us not complain, while so many young engineers struggle in all kinds of trouble. Your arrival, at any time will be a great joy.

Paris 23 Xbre1933Saturday

....The year ends here in a slightly cold atmosphere. We all spent it, but a little caution and we left for 2 or 3 days of confinement. Our appt. are cozy and can be walked in shirts...if our shirts had arms. It hardly resembles the ice of Longchamp Street...

...Our good Suzon wanted to offer us the traditional turkey, with the old tonton, we will share the lunch of the 25......I think of you all my dear ones well dispersed, because of your unceasing sun. I hope, my dear Jean, that you could have given up the task to spend a few days at the Riachuelo where my dear daughter and the three boys have been for ten days already. Unless new instructions, my Simon, I will continue to write to Rosario, as you had recommended me last year.

.....here the week was cold... you will see in the Illustration the effects around Paris. The Seine was carrying large frozen blocks that we could see from our windows; the skaters gave to pleasure and Suzon decided to arm his sons for the slide....In 2 days, thawing came, inexorable, the skaters are molting, the poor people, and God knows if there is, have a smile! And it was general, in Normandy, in Brittany, abnormal temperatures were recorded and as my cider was made during that time, I wonder what it was like! Our people claim it's very good. Here comes a big pack of holly and from Vierville it's the flowers of the season, and it should brighten our houses...
....We were watching a very beautiful film here: The Unfinished Symphony,...... the film...boche ! was very well recorded and accompanied by very beautiful performances of Schubert. I had had such a pleasure in the cinema for a long time.

..The shops and streets are filled with appetizing buyers and victors, it seems that we have never bought so much; the theaters are crowded, cinemas are full, what becomes of the crisis in all this? Is everyone profiting from its rest rather than making the state enjoy it!

....I'd have (Flondrian) At lunch, the old friend, with Suzon, all three of them on my table, without much comfort; Mrs. Saillard must have told you, I'm looking for a folding table not too ugly that will allow me to expand my family invitations, and it's not so easy to find...
