LETTERS from NANY to JEAN HAUSERMANN,1932, excerpts, addressed to Rosario
For memory, 1 franc of 1932 is worth about 0.55 Euros or 3.6 Francs from 2003 - there is deflation of -8,3% -
Paris, Wednesday 13 January 1932
....How is my François, we were to remove this damn plaster on the 23rd, I hope that it was done without any damage for this poor mowed arm, and that this will not prevent the walks on the "petizo"...
...Here everything is fine, all the health is good, except the old tonton who abuses when leaving late at night and not enough to keep his stomach in the restaurant. For a few days he has been eating and spending his afternoons at home, because of some unsoundness....
...I'm also fine, despite the wet grey weather, but not cold; and I even got to undertake day trips in the year, something that hadn't happened to me for 3 years, I think. I'm taking time, for example, I'm doing it spaced, early in the afternoon so I can get back to have tea with my boys. And say after that that I'm not a reasonable mother!...
... It must be acknowledged that the situation is critical both in France and elsewhere. Unemployment here is a grim thing, we find people in our neighborhood in blue cottes who do not look like beggars and yet they are accomodating you with some words breamed between their lips. We are almost ashamed to make them feel sick! The Morning contained the other day in the applications for employment in 4nd page these lines « 2 young people educated, 2 languages, diplomas ECP
, look for work, manual or other.". and I let myself say the other day by someone young Central had come to find that this one was asking, any work to eat The unfortunate man had lived during the daytime parties of the year selling ties in the streets. I know a bachelor, licensed in law, who sweeps away the offices of a bank... to live! And so many others. It is infinitely sad, and I bless the sky not to know you one or the other in such concern for work. The German declaration of last days is not made to calm the minds, our government is resigned and however we need d I am very proud of this name to hold the helm. Fortunately, our dear France has unsuspecting resources. At the most critical moment, we are getting out of it; and I have confidence.
....a letter from Sauze warns that the Homet is extended for 3 months! And he is already satisfied, the poor man....
Paris 27 January 1932 – Wednesday –
....The old uncle is better, and he's watching a little bit, he was eating too much for his age...
....I am well and I was able to make a visit this week. Starting early......it allows me to return before night. So far the system has succeeded, and I would very much like to be able to leave for Vierville next week. Here is how close the painful anniversary, it had cost a lot last year not to be able to go near your dear Father; and relive in the solitude of the old house the atrocious hours of February 24. ...
....I'll surprise you by learning about Grandpa's departure (Rémy Hausermann) ...for Morocco. After having vigorously refused to move from Nantes and follow the Feuillesbois and Alice to Orléans where they are installed, he made his trunks, took his cane and hat, and ran to Casa where Uncle Emile was waiting. It is him, but I would bet that this one will bring him back in qq months in France. I knew this through Marthe Pichorel....
...I hope the work works work well and while earning money Hersent company will not put the shareholders on the straw. Tio Mio n'en is no safer than that!
.....It seems that we liquidated everything at Homet. Navarro left Schmidt's house in Bizerte, Sauze is still there for 3 months, doing everything.
Paris 10 February 1932 – Wednesday –
...I left Vierville on Sunday morning......I went unharmed without a cold, and it was quite cold in the big house, but on Saturday was a radiant day, and even when I left at 7:1/4 in the morning – almost at night – to hear the Mass, the temperature was not rigorous. The mass said in the darkness by our good priest, in the presence of only me and our people, was full of contemplation and I prayed with all my soul.
...and today it snows, and the thermometer marks –5°, so I was privileged by the time for my little trip, by a cold like today's one it would have been necessary to give up...
....I had the visit of Mrs Gilbert who brought me some fresh news, since her husband had just called with the great John. I took, immediately his departure, two sheets of paper and I transmitted the good news to Mrs Cordelle and Mrs Saillard. Happy Gilbert who can hear at the end of the beloved voices! if I could only do the same from time to time......I am asked to send commissions......good friends Martin who are here and leave on March 3 will gladly load it. I'll have them lunch Saturday with old Flondrois and Mr. Bousquet (Truss and Yo are in the Alps to skate and ski. It's definitely the big package that these winter sports are all about.
...I hope everything continues to go well...unfortunately it does not seem that the plans of the Carnival will hold, because of this famous study on amplifications. To hell with it! For the moment at least, I hope that the new government will accept with a smile. ...The Benezeth, who came back to see me on Sunday (it is no longer love, it is rage) I have confirmed, and also that I could count firmly on the arrival of 5 of my children!!!. How do you want old Nany to get the best news, and she's not getting the best of the beast? So I already prepared many things in Vierville, thinking about the spring that will come. Jeanne has a brood of little chicks that will provide excellent chickens, I want the garden very nice and full of flowers, the vegetable garden, the clapper of beautiful rabbits, it is not up to the fruit trees that give promises, a young pear tree, what unwise ! even had buds ready to bloom. That one he is sure of what awaits him, it will teach him.
... I missed here the visit ... of J. de Mons. I know that he had to leave the repair of organs which no longer gives and works with a Mr interested in an invention of Jacques, on acoustics, which would be very interesting from the point of view of the music rendered by phonos in the rooms of great extent. This would remove the sound still a little bit dizzy from these small machines....
...the old uncle... is preparing to leave for Nice at the end of February, for two months.
... in Paris, the business is not very bright and foreign policy is no more. I wonder what the attitude of the Sagne and Cie to the Verdon is. comrades I wouldn't be proud of them.
...it's definitely snowing more beautiful, these are the little ones who come in with cold roses....This doesn't prevent the Parisians from ahead of the spring, many of them inaugurating the tiny straw hats barely large enough to cover half of the skull, with caps barely high with a finger and very visibly inclined on the side, it no longer resembles the bells that were thrown into the eyes, and I wonder how it holds.

...good visit to Tantine, who I have to play Beethoven on Saturday...
....2 charity sales where I bought a knit shawl and a boy's nose cache, the latter sold by Mrs. Odent in a room on the rue de Grenelle and in an atmosphere all that is more faubourg St-Germain!
...I saw our friends Martin, having dinner with them Friday night at their hotel and finishing the evening in the French where we played the Rafale. Very well played, the play was very successful there all the psychology of Bernstein, and he does not seek to veil human feelings, but instead it accentuates the cruelty, and it is terribly poignant. The pretty Marie Bell sss a great success, very well mounted scene, the actresses put in fashion tomorrow, nice room with long toilets, long and ...from the bottom, very little up.I have our friends tomorrow to lunch with the old Flondrois who, if time permits us will take us to visit the cathedral of Chartres.
The Martins had lunch Monday at the Georges Hersent! These smiles that Mr. Martin hardly let himself be taken of. He told me the rest and knows very well what to attribute such friendships. (between us he even hesitated to accept)
....I'm not answering my Simon's letter, it'll be for next Wednesday, I'm so happy to think the trip still holds.
...The good Gilbert will have arrived when my letter reaches you and gives you the little packages. J-en will also hand over to Mrs. Martin...
ParisTuesday, March 8, 1932
I come to find you on Tuesday again this week, because the newspapers announce the departure of the "Florida", from Marseille Thursday 10 March. The mails are now too rare for us to miss them. J-a finally had your good news with 2 letters from my Simon.... his letter of February 11 m-a arrived on Saturday 5 March, that of the 4, recommended SVP, only arrived yesterday 7 March. It cannot be said that in your country of Uruguay the post is perfectly made, it is small speed as our people would say....
...with what haste I expect the certainty of the trip to France that will really do the worker good. I wish that the project is accepted without delay by the government and that the small band of l'Avenida Pellegrini can take the boat.
...You will soon be fresh with us by our friends Martin that I was accompanying them to the train that took them to Pauillac. Special train, a stunning luxury that would make them well-admired by the one that was reserved for them at the Atlantic. ...The old Flondrois was there too and we came back talking to the Tuileries; he came back yesterday with 2 beautiful park rabbits – he had killed 7 of them – who made an exquisite civet and whose rest marine for a pâté. It is a pity that I cannot send you a terrine. This will delight my Jean's English lunch.
....I have to find a great Russian music concert, which I enjoy in advance. We did good music together this week, Beethoven, Schumann, Bach, it's a pleasure to approach the great masters. We also talk about a recital of the Trocadéro by Dupré – a master – and as the great organs of the Troca are renowned, there are many chances that I will let myself be tempted.
I just received a note from Laterrier who had tried for me to sell it, he was refused it, and between us he was right; but he just died, and everything is for sale, I would like to let myself be tempted. These values are not going to be worth it like the others. Unfortunately I predict that part of the village will be on the lookout, and it might happen to 20.000F l The auction takes place on March 25. I will be there, Leterrier proposes to represent me at the notary of Trevières where the sale takes place, it is quite obvious that it must not be set foot in it....
ViervilleWednesday, March 23, 1932
I am writing you from Vierville where we have been since Monday... I wanted to avoid Palm Sunday, here, with its long gospel and the procession of the cemetery where the graves were blessed, with last year where I was with you little Maine, it's the 2nd.nd I don't attend this pious ceremony, but the temperature doesn't allow me to do it anymore.
...we found the old house with joy... small rooms where we set up our penates and where it was sweet to wish. My boys give to me joy, and it is a renewed joy for me that the old house brings me. This date far away, when you were not even as big as the two guys, my John, and I see you all three gambiting on the lawn, the joy of the great Simon externalizing, in addition, by deafening screams that she claimed to be necessary for her complete happiness!! and which put Suzon in torture. Everyone arranges in their own way, but the joy of children is always a beautiful thing to contemplate....
...the old uncle is always delighted with Nice, but also goes to Monte Carlo, which he finds to his liking (it's not mine) he informs me about the feminine fashion that must be, I suppose, that tomorrow, and ensures that he does not play, which is the only way to win, he is not wrong.
The good aunt came to kiss before I left, but she lost a little of her training and said with a smile that she feels old. It's admirable to say at her age; and I hope that this feeling of fatigue will not resist the care of our good Dr. Artaud whom she must consult (with the secret hope that he will not give her any drugs).
....I would like the government not to be too much in prayer to sign the new project and that the date be set for it..... (boat) It would be Cherbourg, or Le Havre, or Boulogne, these 3 ports are competing, and despite the flafla of a triumphal inauguration of the deep water dock in Cherbourg, with Wattier, Messenger, etc., we show a little concern for the performance of the Maritime Station that will not serve much now.
I would be very happy if it were the brave Hébert who went to Rosario instead of Bénézeth. He had the most keen desire, and it seems to me that since he would be installed av. Pellegrini this would make his life much easier, he hardly entertained London street!
Paris6 April1932Wednesday
...We have been back in Paris since Sunday night at 4h1/2. Unlike usual we didn't have to fit in a crowded train, oh! No! For an Easter holiday year it was very meagre and we were alone in our 2nd class; on a convenient train since he was without stops from Caen in Paris – barely 4h from Bayeux.
....I'm waiting for tantine just now to have tea, she's still very valiant; it's admirable. The old Tonton was sick in Nice; bronchitis, fever, he had to take care of himself and take all the precautions of use, fortunately there is a doctor who lives in his house, it's a security for me. He announces that he's going quite well, by writing from Menton, and I just got a huge basket of flowers and oranges... it's going to brighten up the apartment; We are amazed at the bright colours of these flowers, which are full of vigor and hardly resemble those that our greenhouses in the North are trying to grow with great reinforcement of coal.
...The details you give me, my John, were carried back to 20 years. It is a memory for me that does not erase that the vision of the great pond, returning from the beach, some evening in a car, by a beautiful sunset, all kinds of waterbirds, slashers or other, which they did not hunt then, were given an appointment and would beat us safely. ...
...if I count well in 2 months I will grease my boots, anywhere , pick my dear travelers out of the boat, what a joy!...
ParisWednesday, 20 April 1932
...They're not hot... or even the old uncle, who leaves Nice tomorrow to go back to the North, so he can be here for the 1st.ir He'll have to stop in Toulon for a few days! He'll write today, he'll probably see all yours, little Maine....we make excellent salads with olive oil that he's had the kindness to send us...
...I've been taking tea at Mrs Cordelle's house, which is nicely set up in her new apartment. (6 B.C. Brunerie, St. Cloud Gate), with all the last comfort and that we keep heating as long as the sun will boil us. That's a good habit to suggest to some owners, and mine is one of those. It's a real shark that this big bacon!
(Philou and JP) I took them to the cinema on Sunday to see the Cross of the Woods a beautiful film from Dorgelès' novel. Sound and speaking, it's so impressive, without for that it has fallen into melodrama or realism, that I often closed my eyes to not see, but I heard. .....and there were very heartbreaking complaints. It's a great success; and that makes war hate more than ever. If only it served what!
...I am very excited to learn that the project is signed, approved, it would be a fine crowning success for the great John who would deserve it.
.....You must be careful about the things that are hot for the little ones, my Simon. Remember how we became chilly when we returned in 1910. So will you. Cover yourself to arrive. I knit tight, the beige sleeves, the other beige and red sleeves are finished. Martha and I work greens with short sleeves, and this is the series, because it takes 6 different sizes, it is true. My Jean-Paul will also have his heard.
…..I received a letter from a competitor of the Duke of Harcourt who is on an election tour and will be holding a conference in Vierville these days!!!!
Paris on 4 May 1932
....I am very excited to receive more recent ones to learn what happened to the expansion projects. A little good.I confess, with the hope of being informed, but they had gone out. The charming Yvonne from Brichambaut that I was seeing Saturday could only confirm that his brother (Gilbert Hersent)had delayed his departure from Argentina without being able to say more. This would demonstrate that at least the part is not lost, but that we are in the country of "Maniana". Flondrois I saw at length yesterday reminded me that it was necessary to put into practice treasures of patience.... I'd be happy to learn a Good who would finally establish it! the date of the long-awaited journey. Just to think of the joy that awaits us in two months, I smiled, please believe it.
Finally you were in good health, my François well recovered from his little indisposition and all the rest of the "familia" well in shape since it was cooler. . it's still a chance that the discussions at BAn had not taken place as last year in heatwave.
Here everything is fine, the health is good; after a shy attempt to extinguish the fires for 2 days it was necessary to relight the stoves. A very interesting article by Ch. Nordmann in the Revue des 2 Mondes claims that the cloud of ashes whose unpleasant effects you felt could very well emigrate to us and its thickness, interpreting
(sic) The rays of the sun, so cool our summer; it will be cheerful!
The old uncle came back to vote, Flondrois was cutting, cutting, sawing, painting Stang Ar Lin for the same reason. We voted and a lot of votes were cast; the girls' school in front of my room was the witness of the elections in our neighborhood...I'm sending you two papers and the portraits. of the candidates of our Bessin, because the Duke d'Harcourt had a competitor and had to lead a campaign to be re-elected; there was a meeting at the town hall of Vierville, and I imagine what it might have been!! There was a flying blow on the left, we are anxiously waiting for the results of the snatch next Sunday; And so the Stock Exchange has gone back a step, it's not pink! We're afraid of a triumphant return from a Herriot and his associates and God knows what they'd have us.
....Business is getting worse and good houses that had held up so far with the hope of better days, seeing them move away for X times, loosen or fall. It's closing the factories for a while when it's not bankruptcy.
......I also saw Flondrois to whom I transmitted my John all the information you had sent in your letter. He therefore very easily admits that the land is not currently available; but these are his hardships. (sic) . First the term of 30 years must be not far, we have the ground since 1906 or 1907 and Mrs Ramon had it for several years. You could see this with Rodriguez. For the exact plan that it would be interesting to possess, it would be good as you advise to put it in the hands of a "farmmensor" and to place the concrete terminals to assert our rights. Flondrois would therefore like to be taken from the cadastre a layer of what the Bezzi property was (I think it is that name) when Father and he bought it, with and including the land transferred to the Chemin de Fer and another buyer whose name I no longer know, then mark on the part which remains the boundaries that we will have placed; and indicate the names of the immediate neighbours who are bounding us. Send us this layer which would serve to fix what is. In fact I do not know anything in the documents of Father concerning this land; Flondrois in his own country must not have much either; it would be good to know where the amount paid for the land is for the future, whatever the date of sale of this land. I will write to Rodriguez that you will see it again; I have just received the notice of the sum paid for the land this month, it is thin. Some of the buyers are not able to pay, we must leave them time. I have there the statement - addressed to Flondrois - of the late ones, still qq 9500 pesos to settle or 4700 pesos for each of us. It is still interesting enough to touch in franc. Thank you very much for taking the time.
...It's good to expect the arrival of the "Atlantic" or the "Avila", my Simon, and I see myself already on the way to Boulogne or Bordeaux. For this last port the relations are easy by Mézidon......because on 15 July we will certainly have left Paris. As in any case you will not make a stay – admitting that you were there – we will easily arrange with a cleaning woman for the 2 or 3 days we would be there. Suzon will be with his 3 children in Vierville. The main one will be to arrive at the countryside as soon as possible and to rest there in the right air. For Boulogne perhaps it is better to go through Paris, I will work this, and it is already happiness!...
ViervilleWednesday, May 18, 1932
I write to you from Vierville, my good children, I decided to take the boys who had 5 days of holidays for Pentecost, scaring a little, I confess, to have them in Paris dropped, my old legs quickly tired to survey the wood with theirs....
…I write to you in the small room of the corner, the window open to the greenhouse and the vegetable garden, all the birds squeaking, the lilacs are in bloom and embalming, the wood is a wonder, so gently green and filled with flowers that one would like to pick and leave in their place at the same time.....
...I read this morning a very nice article by Cdr Rouch that reminded you of the Marshal Foch. This one, aboard the school "Mouette" had grouped all the young students around him and his words would deserve that I bring them all back to you, it would be a little long, but we can sum them up so "Don't be too technical, it's not essential" Then "you have to work, always work to keep you informed, don't get tired of working", it seemed to me to hear your dear Father, my John. ...
…(taking one more letter from Rosario) The great John had taken over the work, a little pale and thinned from this cursed rubella so badly fallen; as I would like to learn now that you know the result of the discussions, or rather that everything ended up with a victory; what a beautiful journey then for the winner and that I understand you my Simon by saying that these Scottish showers are weary, I trusted in a success...
...I received a letter from Suzon this morning (at Piraeus) who had just seen the officers and midships of Joan of Arc and could have caused all of you with what joy (the Jeanne had to spend a few weeks or months in Buenos Aires) Unfortunately all meetings were cancelled because of Doumer's death
(President of the Republic murdered in Paris)The French legation and consulates took the mourning for 1 month (all women must be in black) So it kept your elders from going to see the film that included Rosario's receptions, and they were very sorry....
George is fine, I don't know if I told you he wrote to Marcel. (Hersent) to inform him of his return to France and expose him the complaint of the staff, engineers in the lead who complain that their supplements were reduced by half with the drop in the drachma.Marcel) I'm gonna be glad.
...I was twice in St-Sever and had a good time with our friends in Mons and Heudrie eager for news from the capital And they told me about the perpetuations of Harcourt's election. It didn't happen alone for him because in Bayeux he failed to be scared by a dynamite band. Here the competitor's meeting went through with calm, but old Dubois apparently asked some embarrassing questions about social ass. And what we expected to do with it. Here everyone is against, but the left ministry that the elections demand, promise us beautiful demands!
...The little ones were able to attend from a window on Rue de Rivoli at the funeral parade in Doumer....It was very exciting that we repeated from various sides and very collected; I send you a newspaper which will inform you about this imposing ceremony, you will recognize from Brichambaut who helps to carry the injured President in his car, he was very close to him when he fell. It seems that to Our Lady Cardinal Verdier went to receive our new President at the great gate, brought him to his chair, reserving all the honours of a sovereign prince, and bowing deeply before him before going to take up his seat in the choir. Prayers were ordained in all our churches, and our parish priest had to read in the pulpit on Sunday the prayer of Bishop de Bayeux!!! asking for prayers from the faithful. All this comes from Rome and some – sectarians – are astonishing with so many ecclesiastical honors for an atheist president and civilly married. From my very little corner, I approve of this tolerance. Blum rages and writes that since Felix Faure we have not had a president as reactionary as the one who has just been elected. The healthy part of the population is happy on the contrary, hoping that he will put to reason the too hot politicians.
.....I saw Beaujon last week, he has a terrible look but does not complain however. He said that at the office we were waiting with anxiety for the result of BA's discussions, because there is no more work in sight, the Verdon will be finished at the end of the year, and the Piraeus is over... if Benezeth had not been so greedy they would have had Cherbourg. Christiani and Nilsen are 75 million... and this is not done. Beaujon did not fail to make him notice. In Cherbourg, Sauze as I saw as well as his wife and daughter Marguerite, m-a said he was introduced to Emile Roullier (the new boss of Maritime Works, distant cousin of the Cordelle) He was on the works commission before which 25 contractors were called before being called to bid for a new underground casemate job, I think. It was well, objected to Sauze that the Hersent house had never done, but qq days later Roullier told Sauze that the house was allowed to bid, which had not been granted to Toulon for an identical but much more important job.
…..I have definitely arranged with Father Dubois for the Coulmain field (the field facing the castle, rented before in Coulmain, died since) I am going to share the necessary smoke holes every 3 years. It is about 250F to pay for it per year, for my part. I have an advantage because it reserves the field itself. I can put my horse in the room and it will break my hay every year. All these conditions will be part of the lease that I will have established by Me Pommier the notary of Treviers; the one that he has established for my Vignet is very seriously done. I therefore think I am safe from mishaps. Of course I could have rented more than a few years ago. I don't have to think about it anymore, and I don't complain.
....Dr. Artault sent a letter of invitation to Simone's wedding (I have sent a nice dish...) It will be a great tralala, there will be reception from 4:00 pm to midnight in the hall of Iéna. After the confidences of Dr. on the rather unglossy situation, (he will even have to help the young household, the fiancé whom he is called architect, is actually small employed at an architect) it is therefore very unreasonable to spend there from 10 to 15,000F, probably better in place in the young household! ....
ParisWednesday1ir June 1932
....I just received the little word – plane – from Simon who finally sets! Otherwise the departure at least the arrival at 2 days, travelers so eagerly expected......I am so happy my dear children that it prevents me from over-apprehensioning on your absence to you three who we will miss be sure! When I think that there is only one anque you have left... and it seems to me that it is so much longer than that....I am so happy to feel you happy, well installed in a cozy house, and leading a life so much more enjoyable and interesting ... than that of Verdon.
I just met Henri Odent yesterday, who asked me about your news, and said that if Mrs Hersent were to win a little bit in the Verdon, it was especially the Boches who had the maggot, so much so that Berger came begging for another association. Hersent would have a famous place to re-enter the same trap. It seems that you did not remove the piece this time at BA, we would have needed some occupation at the Paris office, where it is the most complete marasm....
...I saw some friends this week and attended the Artault wedding. About this there arrived a good one – marriage at the church of Passy – at noon 1⁄2 , I was there, many assistance, I see Mrs Cordelle and am living near her. The bride not yet there. As Schiff made her dress, I was not otherwise surprised! At least at 1:00 a.m. the organs are ting. The procession is moving forward, ...it wasn't the Artaults...and we were wrong about church. By car we arrived at the Assumption qq minutes later, the Mass ended... the good Dr. very moved said and said how touched he was with your collective dispatch. The brave Mrs. Artault too – she was scorned! – Simone Artault outrageously stuffed, the 10
I was definitely more fond of the other procession, with the deliciously simple bride, followed by 4 bridesmaids in blue satin of a tender pastel. I did not go to the reception, I no longer had the courage or the brain necessary for these kinds of meetings that are more sad than anything else. That's why I will go to see the Baroness Pasquier who invites me to a tea prayed for June 9. It's very nice of her, but I'm really not trained to those smiles there, and I'll thank her for it very much.
...there is another apartment to rent in the house (The 123 BC of Longchamp), ...it will make 4. The owner must not laugh. There is not a house Victor Hugo Avenue, I believe, where there is no apartment to rent. It is the debunk in our neighborhood that many new rich, and foreigners left home. It will not be difficult for your grown-ups to find accommodation and in good conditions, and I hope to find in the same house as they do a less important apartment that will allow me to have only one domestic and simplify my life. It must be seriously thought about with the rents that prove to be more precarious every day; The Boches are not talking less than not paying Young, it would be a nice blow for my purse. So what idea did I have to follow the advice of this brave Bousquet, while this money was used on solid French rents chosen by your dear Father!
The old Bordy came to lunch with us. He tasted the menu and I'm delighted, but the poor man eats so much ...sally that I had his heart raised ...his wife was nevertheless excellent and very fine, but I wonder how he has been living since her death. Yet he has nearly 26,000F of retirement, he is alone, but he is dressed miserablely, barely clean. He sought this week to borrow 2600F to do a favor to a friend. He would do this to me on June 6! Alas! I am fixed as to the repayment deadlines and I refused because I didn't 2600F to lose. He wrote me four times and the last one asking me 1500F and I refused four times. I wish you would read his letters, my John, he must be mixed up in a mess with dishonest people who exploit him, because he is a naive and I am sorry to see the rosette of his buttonhole dragged away. He is an unfortunate... but naturally he must be millionaire within 15 days!
We tasted last Thursday at Robert Collard where we found Tantine, Claude and the old uncle. Warm reception and fine tasting. They would be really well-fitted if it were better kept, but it's famously needed a blow of fib...they have a nice old Empire salon, with golden palmettes on green satin; there are pretty paintings on the wall. Claude is delighted right now. Robert is developing with an engineer of his friends and his brother-in-law an invention that will allow cartoons on light poster. He has already spent 50,000F, but they touch on the goal. He has already taken patents in several foreign countries and asked if in BA, in Rio, we used much of this method of advertising (the light poster).
Our Suzon embarks on June 6 with the petiote and the faithful Xénia for Marseille, they will be there on the 11th and 12th. It is for my old heart the wedding that begins, but I think of the great Georges who will be very alone...They should have this week all frame at Piraeus, but all the holidays are cancelled because of the death of the President. Georges has the honour to take care of the landing of the car of the Admiral and to give him asylum in Castella (where the Chedals are installed)This will give them a few intimate invitations that they will have to answer and that only a few days before Suzon leaves, which will then have to be taken to make sure that everything is safe from the bugs before she gets away. I noticed that it was always so.
We were very moved here by the horrific catastrophe of the "Georges Philipard" (the shipwreck of a ship in a storm in the Mediterranean)The details we are now receiving are terrible, and those waiting for dear travelers by sea are shaking back.
In Paris the political situation worries opinion, we wonder what the new ministry will be and do. (political assassinations, the beginning of the next Spanish war)We're fighting in Berlin between Hitlerites and Democrats... the future is pretty dark.
Paris8 June 1932Wednesday
...our Suzon is on her way to Marseille... since Monday. She took the "Theophile Gautier" who stops in Naples on the 9th (tomorrow)....J this winter At least we hope. Georges has already written to Marcel Hersent for several weeks, who has not moved yet. He is undoubtedly bored to be obliged to respond by letter to such a request, (he is not worth his brother's time). Gilbert Georges was very much in the promise made two years ago to take it to Paris. Moreover, the work is almost finished, and the current financial embarrassment will not be solved in a few months. Suzon would like to look for an apartment before returning in October to get his furniture. This is not what is missing, and in the house there are 4 that will be available. Poor Mrs Kahn died, indeed this week, in sad conditions... she was cremated in total privacy. Her children will give leave of their apartment; but it will probably be too expensive for your grown-ups. The owner still has claims despite the 5 apartments still free of the neighbouring house that belongs to him. So I will leave the apartment from the street of Longchamp too, not without sadness, because it is full for me many dear memories; but in the way the business goes it is not time to increase the expenses, but rather to reduce them, if I would make the balance sheet of my capital it would be like all the capital, significantly diminished. We must not sell and settle for our rents, even if they are reduced, as they are by the small dividends or even non-existent ones of many shares. In cha Allah! You're all happy, healthy, the rest is irrelevant.
..We're all pantois at the office because we didn't see your work coming to the horizon, we were counting on it to bring back a little activity that is slowing down!
....the furs are still in order and here we are on 8 June...our travelers will be frozen upon arrival. Of course I will pick them up in Boulogne – Mrs Cordelle too – but we will already be in Vierville and Simon does not hide his haste to get there as soon as possible.
...Juliette B. is still waiting for a husband, but she's a good girl, I don't know if I told you that Henri B. bought a car - d'occasion -a little Peugeot who will make the joy of the whole house in St Honorine this summer where the young household has to spend its holidays. But all these letters tell me nothing that is worth it from the practical point of view and I expect them to be at the first loose nut.
I went to the cinema yesterday, perfectly, with the old tone, we were giving Resurrection of Tolstoy, quite well adapted, but above all a film of the 1stir Atlantic voyage (a new liner for the South American line) , and I have seen with a little emotion the ports of call of Vigo, Lisbon, Rio, Montevideo and BA (if I could only see you on the dock!...) Inside the ship is really beautiful. This was at the Gaumont Palace to which the hard times have brought down the prices: 8F a good orchestra chair! Excellent music and especially an interlude of Russian songs and dances, absolutely successful. What melancholy in these songs of "folk-lore" and how nice harmony one gets from these choirs to 4 or 5 voices, to capella. But it wasn't worth my trip to the Atlantic, there were sea effects that almost blurred the stomach.
...I went to Orsay yesterday to see my poor big (Mara, buried in Orsay) It's a little far for my old legs, but everything breathes up calm and serenity.….
Poor Suzon, despite the joy of finding her boys, was saddened to let Georges at that moment. The unfortunate one struggles with financial worries due to the crisis, he cannot get a drachma out of this sacred country.
...the Greek government will remove our French military mission by measure
very The Institut Pasteur of Athens has not received a penny since March; it is entirely fed by its director: Dr. Lépine, married to a young lady Dollfuss-Mieg. This obviously assumes a great fortune; and the cotton beaded DMC must pass on some of their profits. The situation is everywhere worrying and our government has much to do with restoring our very situation. Herriot who took over from it does not seem to want to play the game of his left-wing co-allies. Despite his views it is said very patriotic; He will do as many others on his board as age has been assailed and that the close ones now call reactionaries! ....

...Our Suzon arrived here on Saturday night, having been lucky enough to arrive in time to take the 10:45 a.m. fast. Good trip on a beautiful boat. The Messageries, for having travelers, making very affordable prices.... And I just received the dispatch from Simon confirming their departure on the Avila (Avila Star, English ship, for Boulogne) I write to them in Rio, a little skeptical about the good arrival of the letter, I confess, (I wrote to our Suzon in Naples and Marseilles who did not receive anything!) .....I think I will go to Vierville on the 27th with Bison and Martha to put the dear house in condition. It is easy for me to get help by brave women there. Suzon will join us around July 5th with the boys, Xénia and the cook. E 13 July I will go to Boulogne where it is very easy to arrive in the same day (2h from Paris) and on the 14th in the midst of the flons of the National Festival, Mrs Cordelle and I will be on the dock of the port...with what joy!
...Georges is fine, but he struggles in the midst of serious financial worries that he did not deserve after this 8 year work. I think it will delay the definitive return to France by a few months, but it does surprise me only half. I have been doing business for a long time! ....
ParisWednesday, June 22, 1932
...I am leaving on Monday (27) for Vierville.....Suzon will follow 10 days later, without any inconvenience for the studies of boys, at the end of the month the programs will be completed (the large holidays were scheduled from 14 July to 1 July).ir October, so that children from the countryside can participate in harvests and harvests).
....we're preparing the apartment for summer quarters; I'm done with a few small receptions, Monday a tea with Truss (Bousquet), Mrs Cordelle and Batifol.
Yesterday Flondrois at lunch, with Cdr Barberet and his daughter... The good "Tio Mio" insisted that we all go to Stang Ar Lin. He will come and pick us up. It is possible that your brothers and sisters will decide but I will definitely stay with my 6 children. I like it better!
Good news of George who hopes to be able to come in September to embrace the Cordelle. Suzon would go back with him, but I am afraid that their definitive return will be delayed by a few months. Business is going very badly in Greece and we must follow closely the events. No better than Georges is indicated for this and this is not the time to escape. Moreover, I really wonder what we would do here, the work is non-existent.
I've been wearing your photos. (positive verascope of the work and family) In Cherbourg, Mme Hébert wrote this morning, for underground shops under the Roule mountain. Emile Roullier, who is an engineer at the Ponts in Cherbourg, made it easier for the Hersent house. J-a had recommended to Hébert and Sauze to introduce himself, saying that he knew Jean Cordelle well. I would like to have something interesting. We gradually debauchered the staff and this one: engineers and others will find it very difficult to place themselves. Really, my good children, I like to see you far and quiet than here and without a situation.
...Tantine left Saturday to join Martha (Pichorel)that his doctor had sent to rest in the country, overworked intellectually, over-erect.
rest.
...a letter from Madeleine de Mons advising that Gallois has enlarged his claims and his barracks. These go well beyond the land of which he is owned and spread in front of our house, completely blocking the view of the sea. I will go after your letter, write to Mr. Notsaire (Mr de Mons) an official letter to protest. J-a-a-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-d-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b n
Not to act alone, the brave Leterrier told me at Easter that he had protested to the council of the invasion of the said Gallois. I count on Jean Cordelle to obtain me by Roullier qq information to the Pts and Chaussées du Calvados and if need be I will have Bros act near the service of the sea grounds. We must not erect against a right... but we must also know how far it exists. Welsh is man to exaggerate his.
...We had intended, Suzon and I to go to the Comic Opera to hear the famous Chaliapine, who sings in Boris Godunov of Borodine. It's a wonderful music and Chaliapine is an ace...but the least room at the henhouse is 85F and the armchair of orchestra110F. We abandoned our project and we went to the Gaumont cinema where for 8F we had a pretty good film – under the leather helmet – and especially a fun – Russian songs and dances – quite successful. The places dropped in price in an amazing way, the chair was worth 15F 1 year ago!
Yo Bousquet m...typed I could have offered my obole to her.... but she's taking her kids to Holland! While all the business is going so badly here. I couldn't stop him from making it to Truss. Tio Mio is as angry as me because he was ...tapped too. It's true that, as a result, Truss, after his cure of Vittel, goes to Holland where she will find her daughter all arrived and ... left at our expense.
I didn't see Bousquet again, I'll call him tomorrow. many I think that the money in his mine business is very much affected by the fact that he has less than 100,000 francs of rent! jubilacion)
You must know that Martin has a lot of trouble getting me the 20,000F I asked for for my field. I will receive them in the drop account m-we say at the bank Argentina, here I still have only 6500F.
ViervilleWednesday, June 29, 1932
.....We arrived on Monday the petiote, Martha and I by the bus at 2:10 pm exactly according to the schedule. We had left at 9:10 am from Paris; the journey improved day by day and it's nothing to come here. It's a superb time, the Bison is walking around all day out, she doesn't regret the boys m-did she say, she even added "ask Touny and Aunt Maine to buy a little girl and send me, you understand with these six boys there I don't have fun; Yves and Jean-Paul would play with the big ones and I would be all alone" All her dolls are girls "Sufficient boys said" and she introduced Tio Mio the last come by saying "here is our daughter, TioMio", this one was very flattered.
....We wait in 8 days Suzon, the 2 boys and valetail. The boys are in high school for the principle, they do nothing anymore, they even have leave today to allow the teachers to pass the baccot. 15000
about for all of France, that of discontented and declassified later, among all these boys with this "patent of the bourgeoisie" as the teacher of the boys says and who are thus caught a means of existence! What a mistake! It is a goal, yes, but it is not a means.
.....I found the old house dusty enough and full of spider cloths, but I didn't get into trances, as this naughty Suzon claims, I have to clean, that's all. We finished the hay, there are a thousand boots that bloom good. Pompon will be well served....
....The village seemed calm and complained that the rental was hurting, there was nothing extraordinary about the crisis we were going through and that seemed to be over.
After my complaint supported by another by my owner Paul Cusinberche, the city council met and very energetically wants to force this Welsh to remove the cabin of qq 15 meters which he installed on the seafront in front of our land. The view is completely prevented. I must say that not only from Mons, but Lebastard, Dubois, Leterrier, Piprel and Gambiar I will take advantage of the presence of the great John to obtain information from Pts and Chés and if necessary I will ask Bros to present me to the Maritime Registration of Cherbourg, the latter must have rights on these lands by the sea.
....Tantine went back to Paris with her daughter (Marthe Pichorel) who would need rest yet but who refuses to stop. Robert will leave around July 12 with all his friends for Cavalaire – via Barcelona (Spain). The hook is important but they intend to get a lot of pleasure from it. J-I admire once again my old aunt whose 80 years did not scare me from such a hike. I would be surprised if I were to re-go in August to Stang Ar Lin, the tio millionist to take us with him, ...it's so good to stay quiet at my age....
Vierville Tuesday, July 5, 1932
I am writing to you a day earlier this week, my good children, because I read that a mail was leaving Le Havre. They are so rare now that they should not be missed.
.....I just spent a week in the middle of rags, broom, encaustic and mirror. It was an occupation like another, the old house was like that of Sleeping Beauty, lined with spider cloths...
....good news of Georges who just managed to get a fairly large sum on the plans of Salonique. He thinks well to come in September and maintains the divine Marcel (Hersent) . Here's one that doesn't make his brother's finger (Gilbert).
…Suzon is installed with 2 cadets in the 2 small rooms on the 1⁄2 floor, the Philou in its room (old bathroom of the pink bedroom of the 2nd)…..
Vierville, Tuesday, July 12, 1932
…....Leon makes the garden look like it's small, no doubt that the first look of the dear people who are not here, coming back after such a long time, is not gently impressed by the arrival in the old house. Their home is set up in the 3 small rooms that you know and I reserve for those of you who have the smallest. almost empty
The guest room is located in the 1⁄2 floor, the toilet room contains the beds of JP and Bison, separated by a screen, which enchants them.nd
who already put it in a big boy.
...Suzon, on my advice, decided to remove the children from high school, where they became far too many to follow a successful work; they will enter in October Kaiser course where all the studies are supervised as in Gerson and from where they go out at 6h1/2 without any duty to do or lesson to learn. J-en had the best information by former students comrades of the kids in high school. Therefore the great abbot was thanked., he was a good man!...
ParisFriday, July 15,1932,9h
It was 9:1/2 a.m. yesterday when the ferryman took off from the quay of Boulogne to go in front of the beautiful boat that was slowly approaching in a big landing. It was a radiant time, the flags of 14 July were slammed in the wind in festive air, and from further than our eyes, the hearts of the 2 mothers guessed the dear silhouettes, qq minutes later, we were docked and before we could meet quite well, … ? , My faith, the first words.
Our travelers looked very good, the sea air and the forced rest of those 21 days tanned their complexion and probably big cheeks. How happy to meet, my good children after these 4 years of separation our tongues no longer stopped for hours, the questions followed each other without interruption and we were all happy to answer it. We were still talking by taking the train to Paris. 3 hours later we spoke on the train, we were still talking at 11 o'clock in the evening. Needless to say, you were not absent from this flood of words......The three little ones are very cute, the two great very reasonable, the little one a beautiful kid whose life overflows and who finds the way not to be groaning for a penny by passing in all the arms that they tend to him. Jean Cordelle has forced, as they say "thou us" and my dear girl surrounds her old affectionate mother whom she is very happy to feel around her.
We're leaving tomorrow afternoon for Vierville. Jean was able to get his money without difficulty, he also went to the office where he found only Gilbert and Bénézeth. He was going to Cherbourg where he will try to bid for underground work. (Hersent) She's in Nacqueville with her husband. Mrs. Gilbert is still lying or about. (Hersent) is in Azay
(Azay the Fero) , Marcel in England,
All your nice and sweet surprises are in the trunks that didn't come to the apartment (we'll meet them at St. Lazarus station tomorrow) but Simon could pass without any customs your shipments to Toulon, less the Chinese crepe from Paulette who is in a trunk and will be sent by post. (Henry Saillard) He came nicely this morning to take all under his arm. He seemed very touched by the attention of this " criolla" tie very wisely chosen.
.....In Vierville where we will be tomorrow around 6h1/2 everything is fine, we are active for the reception of travelers. I guess everyone's joy, and that of the 4 boys, Bison is very excited, she will have much to do with Titoune who moves like an eel and will want to be everywhere at once. He is in the apartment like a caged bear, fortunately he will have enough to turn over there. He is very fun and jargonous throughout the day, the name Pitone returns in his speeches without I could often discern the meaning. The 2 great are quite reasonable; Simon tells me she wrote to you at every stopover and that she will do it in Vierville soon, with a rested head....
....We had lunch at Mrs Cordelle's house this morning, Gaby and his wife came to meet us at the cafe...The interview was cordial but Jean and Simone are sadly tested by this return where the little sister disappeared......Ms Cordelle...covers the replacement of attentions and friendships......Indeed, Mrs Gaby is a charming, well-bred and intelligent woman, and Gaby deserved a little bit of happiness. All these feelings are personal.....
ViervilleWednesday, July 20, 1932
....In Bayeuxle Greek quartet we were waiting and it is difficult to tell you again the joy of seeing again. .....later Simon will tell you in person that they did not recognize the Philou who, in agreement with Suzon and me, was walking dilettante on the platform of the station and had without it appear, subtilized one of the suitcases that we had just landed and around which we all worked. Suzon was supposedly, accompanied only by his 2 cadets, the elder being wounded at the foot, could not change....At a glance I warn the thief...supposed and designates him to Simon, who, red of anger rushes on him and pulls off the suitcase...always without recognizing him. I saw the moment when it would turn bad, Ph. playing his role very well, so we stopped the prank. And Simon and Jean exclaimed. There is a little bit of what, as this great boy has changed!
Another joy that this arrival in the old house where the 5 boys dropped like cabrios give from morning to evening. The 4 elders are fingers of the same hand, we only split with a lot of difficulty! Only to lie down. The Titoun was adopted by Bison whom he calls the nenia, she has much to do with her infant, this one gives to heart joy, and falls from sleep at night at the time of bed. All this world devours, laughs, jacasse and the dear house seems to have found some of the joy of formerly...
...thank you, Jean, for the last positives, I brought them all here where they will grow the collections of the taxiphote. Collections that we are so happy to handle to see the dear faces absent.
...With Jean Cordelle as much as with our Simon, we chatted like pies. You know, my Jean, what interest your old mother has always taken in the work and especially those of which you are artisans. Helped by the photos, I have grasped everything that was happening now...your dear Father would be pleased with it!
I am reading the newspaper articles that require the setting of the port. Jean Cordelle also communicated an important and very interesting file. We have not yet exhausted all these resources. Thanks to God we have time before us, but this whole story is passionate and I hope that we will succeed in removing the piece.
Jean C. saw Gilbert and Bénézeth in Paris, he must return to the office on Tuesday, he will meet Mr Georges.Ms Jean of Nacqueville wrote us a letter full of affection to join our happy meeting; and Gilbert promised Jean C. to visit us here soon – in car.
Jean will attend the Mass on the 26th of his sister's death in St-Cloud. He will meet his brother-in-law and his wife there. They were also at the front of us at Gare du Nordle 14...
.....the baths are frequented every day by the boys, Suzon and the little one. Simon and Jean sssy are risky this morning and highly appreciated the warm reaction that follows immersion.
We haven't seen anyone yet but I know that Jacques de Mons is here for 15 days with his wife. The beach is very quiet and the hotels are definitely empty. I had a visit to Paul Cusinberche, my owner at the beach, who came to introduce me his fiancée, a big and pretty girl, And tomorrow we have an appointment with the notary of Trevières; Jean and Simon want to maintain their idea of buying land. It is as well as all the values that are falling...
ViervilleWednesday, July 27, 1932
….(Jean C) was, in fact, on Monday to Paris, to attend the anniversary Mass of little Suzannette. Michel accompanied, sorry to leave Vierville and the comrades, games and new things constantly, but he went to see its Dr. Nobécourt, who undoubtedly admired the patient I'll have them tomorrow night with Mrs Cordelle who comes to spend 2 or 3 weeks to enjoy some of her children. They may be going in a row with her and the little ones for Besançon where are now – at the Banque de France – the Dupuis and the old Mrs Feige. I would be surprised if they were to find her within 3 years that their new absence must last. She is well tired now though always disliked and threatened with complete blindness, which worries her, because she read and worked a lot. It's better to leave before old age is over. (Mother Feige left in 1936, and the Cordelle saw it in 1935.
…Although it was a very grey and often rainy weather, Jean had worked hard to clean the tennis that was in need of it. He had been looking for soda chlorate in Trevières and, helped by the little ones, watered heavily what was left of the weeds after a thorough grubbing-up. But since then he has fallen trombs which, I am afraid, will have diluted the poison,...and the herbs of laugh!
...The baths are a little neglected and because, but the days are still busy. Both mothers and the nany keep knitting for each other, the 4 guys are inseparable and often gone, which is always worrying, but fortunately the great Philou is very reasonable and leads the band with some authority. It's Francis' friend, while the 2 cadets don't leave. The girl is a little mistreated, the poAnd she has a lot to do with her infant who is insurgent. This one is the zozo of the band and I would give it to see him associated with the childhood comrade: Pitone whose name he always pronounces a dreaming air.
The Collières – Denise and her children – have just arrived. Good recruit that these newcomers and I leave you to think of the shouts of joy that fill this old Vierville who had seen so much for so long. It's a little bit of air back then and I'm looking for the figure of the good Daddy so happy with the joy he was sowing around him.
We don't get out much, even in car racing in Bayeux or Trevières, because all the suppliers have come back and abounded. However, there is always a simple and friendly welcome. Jacques is here with his wife ..... He works to develop an amplifier that has already made a noise in the world of cinema. If this succeeds, I think it will be the great ease for the young household. Collières is co-director in Lisieux and will only come very little.
From Pierres, but not yet Guillemette, Than's mansion gives shelter to English people with no big face, which the donkeys of the great Countess must say (from Goussancourt) !
...The 3 family apples are only three, all on the Hausermann apple tree, I will ask the owner, aka Jean-Paul, for their free disposition; of course.
Finally I will open a window above the greenhouse for the room of the " Club des Jeunes Français". These have decidedly adopted the small room above the engine, where I parked potatoes, in winter. But it only takes light by a small window on the corridor between the house and the motor, always cold and without sun. The Bazaar of the Town Hall sells all prepared windows with frames, pentures, cremones. For 130F j-a ordered one of 0,80m by 1m of length; small tiles. The 4 boys are delighted to have a home, where everything can stay in disorder without risking the eye of a nany always looking for qq cleaning.
The roofer will pass on the roofs and Leon, assisted by Jeanne, will paint with carbide the reinforced cement fences. I see hardly any major repairs to do and it is so much better because the rents have no tendency to increase, quite the contrary.
I saw the notary of Trevières this week. He set up a new lease for Dubois who must take possession of the herbage of the Wood in December. The conditions are more clearly detailed than on that of Coulmain established a little to the good franquette, I reserve the right to put the horse to shepherd, and Dubois will have to cut the hay of the lawns behind and in front of the house in good time, the price of herbage is 1000F l The animals that we have to put in are milk cows, which require a maintenance of the room so as not to exhaust the yield. The farmer will no longer enter the room by the gate opposite the gate, but by another one that I will have put at the opening that gives in the way near the town hall. This to avoid the mud that would bring the parking of cattle at the time of the milking.
(see previous letter)By telling me for several months, the notary only approved what I proposed to him.
Wednesday, August 3, 1932
...The great John came back with Mrs Cordelle and Mich whose doctor could only admire the development, these little ones are other than comrades Collières. Patrice, François' contemporary, is not the size of Michel, and everything to the same. Gillone is not higher than the big father Yves.
Georges telegraphed that he was taking his holidays in August instead of 7bre, his business claiming him in Piraeus that month. Suzon will go to Paris on Sunday to find himself there at the arrival of her husband, while the 4 Cordelle, father, mother and the 2 elders will go with the Pépita in Cherbourg where they have to have lunch at the Bros. We were all invited, but the 6CV is not elastic; I would have done well for the Bros for the weekend, but the house is complete, I expect to be thundery these days; and our 4 great ones no longer nest in dressers! Simon even bought a domestic bed that they will find on their way home, for the brave Clementine who arrives from Bordeaux on Saturday.
The weather... was turned over to the beautiful, and yesterday, the great tide, saw the inauguration of superb nets, many sandals, etc., etc. to go fishing shrimp, crabs, gongs and mussels. Apart from the crabs that remained invisible, the harvest was fruitful; down the stairs of the giants, and back idem. The 4 boys dressed in old knits on their bath suits would not have given their place for an empire. The great John has a patience and authority that allows the small band of happy moments. We enjoyed pink shrimp this morning, including some very respectable ones; The "Totony" goggles, as they say here, will make the entrance to Friday's lean lunch. The mussels will be served tonight, in a windy crust with 1⁄2 liter of cream.
....I have just been interrupted by the delegation of the golden youth of Trevières!!!... who brought me the traditional brioche of the patronal feast; it looks very frightening but, quite between us, it costs me dearly!Where is the time, my John, where you were preparing with the guys here the feast of St. Andrew's Day, the boss of Vierville, and where your dear Father was squeaking to make it as bright as possible. It's changed well here, and the youth no longer d'entrarain. The beach remains still very quiet; and the hotels are half empty....
Vierville18 August1932
... everything goes very well even, in a beautiful time that allows baths every day to the great joy of the boys who make the seal in a very fun way every 4. The bath follows a Swedish gymnastics lesson, taken in the open air, under the supervision of Ballès all happy to lead his little class. The girl is and often also the 2 brothers who soften their members with the greatest attention.
Afternoon in the park, with trees or umbrellas, unless it is a car ride, or races in Trevières, Grandcamp or Bayeux, or even a visit to Mons, La Heudrie, Brunville or tutti quaanti. All the Batifol are there, including the young household very busy; they have a little Peugeot and this is an event in the villa of Ste Honorine...
.....the sisters are very excited about knitting and sewing. The sewing machine acquired this winter in a sale in St Laurent does great services. Jean C. works at tennis which he refurbishes "to the ground" and God knows if he needed it. Georges Chedal helps to store the books of our dear Mara, most of which came from my parents and grandparents; qq. some are very interesting, some have value. J-a removed all the vases from the niches of the library, they are replaced by rows of books and it is much better.
The Cordelle, father and mother leave on Wednesday for a small bus tour by Savoy and Switzerland back by Besançon where they will see Mrs Feige and the Dupuis. They intend to be absent a week, no more. Georges Chedal will take advantage of their absence to visit his old parents who are staying – together!!! – near Saumur. Everyone will be back to the 1stir September.
....We measured and weighed all the children, all this was penciled on the lingerie cabinet. They all grew up more or less 7 to 10 cm in their year, except Yves who jumped with his 15cm1/2! It's huge, yet it's round like a ball. Only missing the measurements of Jean-Paul that I demand to write them properly. Don't forget little Maine.
....We have read with emotion that l'aviso
(the one who was on the Dakar-Recife link) postal mail was considered lost – What a sadness! and no doubt there were some letters to our address on board!
...the seaside is a little more animated by these days of August, and there are qq displays of not very attractive backs and thighs. Long pajamas have also made their appearance, they are not the clue, at least by us, of an indisputable distinction.
ViervilleWednesday, August 31, 1932
....our 2 Argentineans are returning tonight – to our great joy – from their little tour of the Alps. They were there in good weather and seem delighted with their getaway. They left us 8 days ago, leaving their 2 boys who had been asked to take first to the great despair of the necks. In view of their age, the parents decided to wait another opportunity to make them enjoy such an expensive journey, and our little band did not break up.
So these are the same games, the same laughs and the same appetite...The Bison follows with constancy, although rather mistreated in the middle of this turbulent assembly often increased by the 2 elders of the Collières. And the little one goes from one to another with a fearlessness that does not tire; even to sleep. It is often necessary to settle in the dark, near his bed to calm his ardour to get out of his bed and make gallipets. His jargon sorries new terms every day and he amuses us, with it inside!.. to stir the most neurasthenic. As it was, my dear children, to see him smear... and perhaps fight... with Comrade Pitone, who everyone thinks with regret!
The whole house is fine, despite a few small intestinal indispositions due to the unconsidered absorption of green fruits.. that the one who did not do this throws the first stone at them. It didn't last, a purging, qq washings and the stuffing is finished, we are ready to start over.
....As time passes quickly... we start talking about departures... it's the great Georges who will begin. He went to Paris before yesterday to talk to his young boss...a bit of a bitter conversation about George's return to France. He feels that he is necessary for his two boys and strong from the promise of 2 years ago, he reminded Marcel......Your dear father used to say that he had to wait...for unexpected events that arise...Georges will come back to us Friday after spending a few days with his old mother in Anjou.
.......q visits:......in Asnières at the Brunvilles, and in Ekrammeville at the Rampans. These last two beautiful houses have changed much, in Ekrammeville the young Marie-Thérèse has given a famous blow of fion, and the old and beautiful furniture with dark woods are more highlighted. Madame de Rampan was more concerned about her cows than about her living room – I said, I believe, that she had died last winter, - but it must be recognized that with her farm outfit she had a big look and had lost nothing of her mind 18ndI was happy to see her again.
....we are waiting for the friend Flondrois and Carlito Martin from the first day of next week. I am very happy with these two friendly visits and I plan a fortnightly agitation. Perhaps we will go to Deauville-Trouville, where all the "beauties" are almost bare. The pyjamas of the last fury are said in organi, without anything under it. I can't believe it! We must hear the over the two good Franciscans who left us this morning and that their annual quest has led to these antres du Diable. The old one – which you know well, my Jean, she is always the same – made us laugh; In her indignation, she found words of dortion!
ViervilleTuesday13 Sept.1932
...Well received the bombillas and maté. The first adorn the club, the name of J. Hausermann is marked on the book d-o as a benefactor! I suppose the 4 boys will have thanked you for it, but think about everything they have to do! The days are too short for them. For me too it passes, I don't want to think about it!
...Georges is on his way to Athens after a stormy conversation with the young boss – constipated –Simon will tell you this orally... and Georges is looking to fit in somewhere else, he has enough and I understand it! ....Motus of course on Georges' resolutions.
.......Suzon leaves on October 10 for Athens and the 22nd will be the turn of our Argentineans!
Vierville21 Sept.1932-Wednesday
.....we eat beautiful williams and the last melons... it's the end of this beautiful summer, so fruitful for me in beautiful hours; and the house gradually takes its covers ; because it's next week that the young band leaves for Paris – the 1ir 7bre exactly (Nany means the 1stir October) - I will stay as usual for a few more days and be on the 5th in Paris after having closed all the shutters of the large empty house without pleasure.
Suzon left on the 10th with the petiote and Dada, via Marseille. Georges was in a hurry to see her again. He had to, on Marcel's orders, liquidate most of the staff, including 4 engineers who did not count there! It was a hard chore, they left at the end of the month for Paris; one d ́eux had 2 children and everyone was uneasy. Marcel was not concerned about feelings. They were given 3 months of extra time. The great Georges who is also the good George sees with regret the dedicated collaborators, then the empty yard or about, it is no longer there for the settlement of accounts that turns out to be difficult naturally. Suzon needs to be there to maintain a failing morale.
Carlos Martin left a few days ago at the receipt of a dispatch.....I had great pleasure in seeing this good, quiet but not spirited big boy again. He received an education that is not lacking in some depth. With this very claw without laughter, and knowing admirably enjoy the pesos that the chance of life has left him. We did beautiful walks with him; and as he has a beautiful car that brings him here in 2h1/2, (from Paris, 280 km, crossing towns and villages, François confirms: "2h1/2 seems a little short, but with a powerful car, it may be near the truth; I remember Tio-Mio who was lightly doing 140 (by meter) on the roads of the Channel, with his 6-cylinder hotchkiss and two carburettors, to the great satisfaction of the children and to the great fear, justified in my opinion, a-posteriori").He promised to come back Lunch From time to time with us next summer! Nothing easier indeed.
Did I tell you that Marcel Parmentier had come to see us several times when he spent ten days at his father's house. His wife had stayed in Chaville to take on the double task of a doctor that was his responsibility... and it seemed to him to be a pleasure to find the little part of the young band in the past. We caused his sister, and had complained before him. Is that it? Still, meeting your two sisters in Bayeux, Germaine jumped them at their neck expressing her keen desire to see them again...
…..I have the last works done on the property, my Jean, the chapter of the cover and painting has been exhausted, the reinforced cement fences are a white snow and give the appearance of a real Norman domain. I make raise by the mason the end of wall that borders on the road the land that I bought 2 years ago near the pond and that will continue that which is already there. This piece of land will enlarge qq little free Coulmain field at Christmas and that the big Dubois takes on lease for 7,000F....
.....we demolished with great pick-up, the whole line of the small railway, replaced by buses, and I took the rank for the purchase of qq 3 to 400 cross-crosses well usable for wood stoves and fence stakes.
The sisters have put away the attic which gradually fills the room, and we have removed the pretty corner shelf of our Mara which is now in the bishop's bedroom that completes it beautifully. It is well decorated our house, you know! and the memories are full of it that make it a more pleasant stay for us all.
...the Heudrie awaits the arrival of the baby at Monique. Françoise is in Paris who will assist him. Madame de la Heudrie had kept her two little girls here, but they came to have diphtheria there, they spent terrible moments, impossible to call the mother whose presence had then become undesirable near the young delivery, that Mrs de la Heudrie could no longer go to cure herself. Finally the danger is conjured, but they escaped it beautiful. Needless to say that despite my desire to be able to help them, I could not set foot on it because of our 6 children.
... come on, darling children, I'm leaving you to see Mrs. Coulmain in order to recommend that she have her her herbage cleaned up from the wood before she leaves him. It's been well-kept since Coulmain died. I sign the lease with Dubois before my departure, cad Friday. Jean has an appointment in the study of Me Pommier with his farmerSimon is not very proud, it's a pity.
In short, my apple field is not so devoid of it as it was said and there's going to be a good cider barrel – y pico
- Leon and Jeanne smile.
....The conversion of the rents from 6% to 41/2% has just been voted. I will let you convert everything you have, it's still a good investment for now...
Vierville277bre1932Wednesday
....the weather has been singularly refreshed with the d'équinoxe days and the wind blows loud from the NE rolling large black clouds which contrary to the usual pouring out of us harsh showers. It was necessary to say goodbye to light robes, and look for woollens in the bottom of the trunks. The garden was devastated in one night by the burrasque and leaves begin to fall.
....a good afternoon with the Mons and Pierres – Guillemette charged with her memory for you both – it's always the sweet and loving girl you know; accepting with great grace the difficulties of today's life. She spoke to me without any aménity of her cousin Marcel H. (is it Marcel Hersent?) at a meeting where she found him in the spring, he pretended not to see her, because he was in the company of a La Rochefoucauld "I am not adding, nor sufficiently rich, nor sufficiently titrated for him" I had to defend this poor man softly.
A splendid car tour of Odette Bligny and his Greek Colas... Paleologist – please. This has been for quite a while. As a result, he has a superb ring with weapons, probably those of his great grandfather, the Byzantine Emperor!Apart from that, he is a charming and very cultivated man, in the face of Turkish, a carpet merchant.
Also visit Germaine Parmentier with her sister and daughter. These two have a terrible look that contrasted singularly with that of our little redheads and fatty ones. It is definitely a reconciliation, and it was approached as if it had been seen the day before. I did not put the conversation on the dangerous ground....
The beach is deserted and the houses closed; we were yesterday spending a moment in St Sever which already seems very melancholy. Our 4 boys had joined their 2 comrades and we had gone with his taste, to adventure. A beautiful storm striped lightning interrupted this beautiful escapade and we came back behind the 4 boys paedalant dare, whipped by a heavy rain and rolling in mud puddles... it was necessary to change them from foot to heading and wash them greatly in the laundry; it was only packages of mud. The girl and Titoune who stayed at home considered this as amateurs, and the latter came out in a way of conclusion: "They are dirty, Kids Without comment, it is a fun man and a pawn. It is two comrades with the Bison who has much to do with this big baby that she would have liked to treat as a doll, but who is getting drunk. Moreover, he is always filled in the garden with Jeanne and Leon who are to his devotion and thanks to whom he absorbs, I suppose, a lot of fallen fruit....
...Every night thanks to the great John who has put together many photos, we delight in looking at positives in the taxiphote.
Vierville4October1932-Tuesday
.... We're leaving tomorrow and we'll be in Paris around 5:00. Suzon already gave some details about their arrival in the apartment: 11 people, 7 trunks, 19 hand parcels, a box of pears, butter in mots. All the beds to make (the living room is changed into a dormitory for boys) and all this in a filthy way!... finally everyone put their own, with a good mood, and the Titoune took advantage of the lack of supervision to make a stepple chase under the beds, from where he went out black like a coalsmith. The old uncle had been in front of the smalah, a little contrite to have been that very morning, relieved of his purse!
…..I had to make the mason go through the repair of the walls. Under the action of the heavy rains of last week, some even threatened, the mortar is made only from land, Father Leberruyer has put this to the point; I also had to see the curfew, it was raining at the bishop, an old rotten slate by the action of time; then to have repaired the large gate – honor as Dupont-Blin said emphatically. Everything seems in order and this is a satisfaction.
...I regret to have let the opportunity escape to buy a dozen hectares of land, very close to here. I would have done better than to leave to the state the rents that he just converted me. To tell the truth, until the end I was hoping that Mr. Chedal would decide to acquire it. Georges offered it to him, he hesitated...and he so much hesitated that the deal was made without him. Yet he had qq 5 to 600.000F in his chest that he leaves unproductive for fear of a mis placement. At his discharge it must be said that his fear is not without reasons. Business goes from bad to worse in France. We are crushed by taxes and charges by the state which begins to feel all imprudence of its administration, pressurize an empty lemon, we do not get any juice. This is what happens for everyone around here. Moreover the unemployed trade and industry therefore (have you seen that the Longwy Steelworks will not give any dividend this year). Staff dismissals no longer count. Not later than yesterday I had the visit of our friends from Mons, well-pained because Jean Collières has just been thanked for his bank with 3 months' compensation... it's not much when you're with 4 little ones behind you and the very random perspective of another situation! Poor people are terrified, there is something.
I really like to see you away from here! Hope that Rosario's work is still going on and that you will not be repatriated...to thank you, Jean! Hersent's house is full. All the staff of Piraeus or almost are laid off, and probably also the one of the Verdon that ends. .....The works of Verdon will leave me Hébert a nice profit to the Hersent, given the revision of the prices, but the most privileged ones will be the boaches.
....I received yesterday the positives, my Jean,...You all look very beautiful and my Pitone is beautiful, I am not surprised that he grew up, it is obvious, but it is boring that he has lost weight; you are right to strengthen him. Yves measures 99cm (it's very big for his age) and weighs 17kg1/2. If he continues it will be a giant. He has fattened and grown here, like everyone else, Jean C. is obese with 67kilos that he never weighed. Simon is at 59. Suzon 54 1/2 as Phiphi – another giant! etc...
....Good news from Georges......he will remain in a strong battle this winter for the settlements in dispute, and he expects an arbitration.
Well received the pipes that I will arrange; although I find my Jean well trained to smoke. Your brother-in-law Georges has completely ceased for a few months and finds it admirably, he charged me with sharing it...... Good hearer hi!
Paris14Oct.1932-Friday
....I wanted to write you at length today; for Florida leaves tomorrow and I don't want to miss the mail, but I came to visit and to finish the old tone that was not going anymore, however, I want my letter to go away, I will catch up next week by the Atlantic which has just arrived in Bordeaux and which will probably bring us your news.
Our dear colony has been trying a little this week, because the older sister left with the petiote on Monday night, which is still in a bad state of indigestion....it made her miss the morning of the Châtelet where I was so glad to see her stinging in front of "The little girls dancing", we were there with the boys who did not lose a crumb. It was nice to see them.
...Suzon was supposed to embark on Tuesday around 4am but the maritime registrants decided otherwise, they were stuck in Marseille for X time. I leave you to think of the fury of your elder.. and the inevitable costs of such an adventure.....Finally thanks to the minister it has been arranged and the ship re-armed has risen anchor yesterday, they are today in the harbour of Naples
Our little Mich was operated on Tuesday with this, a little hernia discovered by the surgeon friend of Nobécourt, short operation, without gravity, very successful. The ... sick giggote in his bed, devours all the menus, did not have a bit of fever and will return to us next Tuesday.
....I've been pinching a brain cold at one of my boys, it's fallen down on the chest, I'm being calmed at home because I don't have a bit of fever....Can't go to see our little sick girl, poor Simon gets razed between the clinic and her old mom who is only used to bulky things. Where are all our beautiful outings, theaters and the rest?
Paris 19 Oct. 1929
.... (Michel) The little operation came back to us on Monday morning with a good figure, the staples removed from then the day before, we can only see a very clean scar that offers no danger, the surgeon said that this operation was no longer of any interest, he could go back to his family... which we accepted with joy.
....We wait for tantinous tea this afternoon with the old uncle who has to bring us brioches of the Moon..Mas Chedal boys will not be there, they are in the middle of the school, I told you?, at Kayser class and do their homework, they only return at 61/2 free of everything, it looks well held, very monitored, the classes never have more than 15 students, while at high school they reach this year in 4nd, 5nd and 6nd, from 50 to 60 students, it is impossible to make everyone work, the homework is corrected to the devil .. when they are!And the lessons recited every 3 or 4 days. ...
...The time seems to be up to speed, but it's definitely cooler and we're required to make fire. Our owner won't light 24 hours before the 1st.ir November and yet in many buildings now we heat on October 15th....There will be 5 appt. for rent, Pozzi, Kahn, Modiano, Armand Delille, Koenigswerther. There are as many in the nearby house that has belonged to him for 1 year. This does not prevent him from refusing to reduce his claims: 35,000 for appt. on street 25,000 on those of the court. We escape after having seen them because there is more than one 1,000 to rent in the 16nd.
...John had a little information from Hébert because Chalon put a solid wall in front of his business. by the care of the house Delpeau and Plat (I believe) who work with the Hersents on plans for a large underground job in the Loire Valley - 100 million - Naturally Chalon places his creatures, but we thanked the four engineers of Piraeus.
We're talking about 100 million jobs in Bizerte, mostly dredging, for the navy. As this one doesn't have a penny and it's urgent, Hersent would make the advance... and that could be arranged, Bombiolo (?) having nothing to do with it. I also said that John had spoken of it to his cousin Roullier, who is of the same promotion, and that he had told him that he had a reputation for being fierce with the entrepreneurs.
...Bravo for your savings. I would not advise you to continue to do it. You are better than ever at this moment, and we don't know if it is for long. Enjoy enet if you can send 100 pesos a month, my Jean, do it, don't miss it. I won't put anything in there and leave it to you. We have to wait a more favorable and calm moment.
...Of course Jean C. goes to the office and he doesn't waste his time there, he had a long conversation with Georges and Gilbert after the last mail received, the first one goes back on hope for amplifications, the 2nd which has been scalded is quieter, and one speaks of a journey to Argentina of the uncle and nephew. I want to ask if they need a maid.
To Vierville... I will not go for Toussaint, but only after your elders leave...

Paris29 Oct.1932Saturday11am
...good news of Piraeus, George is happy to have found his wives, the poor boy needs a house where he finds someone on his way home. Suzon and Brigitte were very tested by the sea, and found a warm heat when arriving, for Suzon had forgotten here the little black jacket of his tailor, and she took me one of my little hats of black felt. Decidedly the departures are enlivened. It is true that we must have seen the organization of the apartment when we all arrived from Vierville, what capharnaum! The living room changed to dorm, the dining room to play room, etc! And the trunks in the middle of all this....
Tricky days as those of Toussaint, I will not go to Vierville and send violets for your dear Father, we were yesterday in Orsay by a bus service organized by Citroën that travels all around Paris for a very reasonable price. This makes this little trip that I could so difficult to make in winter. Left at 1h1/2 from Place de la Concorde, we had returned to Paris at 3h1/2. The old uncle was with us.
We will hear tonight at the Troca the requiem of Berlioz, harmonious orchestra, choirs of St-Gervais, beautiful evening in perspective. Jean Cordelle who had never attended a concert and was grilled with envy, will begin with a master's stroke, as for Simon who accompanies us, I am not sure that she will return to the heart of the race. We intend to go to the French next week, all this is a little bit of a pain that each of us is going to repulse!
...heard about the yo-yo, Jean, I was planning to send you one, DuncanThe brand is in the spotlight.
Letter from Simon to Aunt Maine, same mail
....we will be boarding next Saturday at 7am and leaving Paris only 3 hours before, so we can enjoy ours until the end, and decided Nany to stay in Paris. As these 3 months have passed quickly! .... (to BA): a room for matrimonio with a child's bed and a bedroom with 2 connecting beds, and 1 room for Clementine, at 6nd We're coming on Friday, but you can find out...

Paris Saturday, November 5, 1932 ,11h 1/2
....and the weather is great after a series of terrible storms on the coasts. I hope our dear travelers will have a calm sea to allow them to take the sea. (Almeda Star, English ship, by Boulogne) A special train leaving the North Railway Station at 4:40 p.m. will set them at dock around 7 p.m. and immediately after they will be transhipped on board (the ship does not come to dock). I am not accompanying them until then, for the peace of my two dear daughters who were afraid of my isolation in Boulogne and of the time I could find there. It is a sacrifice that I make to their tenderness...The trunks have gone, they carry your commissions and the shipments of Toulon, Georges and Suzon, from your old Nany....
Simon's letter to the Hausermann, same mail,
....will you, my little Maine, inform you about a washer, I would not like to take back that crazy old woman from Donia Maria. (Seroux) She knows someone, she seems to have told me about it. I would like her on Monday and Tuesday morning and she wants to do something other than washing in a morning. Thank you very soon and a thousand good kissesSimone

Parissaturday12nov.1932
....all is well here, life is reorganizing very calm - too quiet! - after the joyful agitation of our 5 boys... I am very satisfied with the method of the course Kayser, all Alsatian, energetic cad. Boys needed this given their character and let it go more and more from the school swollen with students....
...the old uncle is of foundation, but he's leaving on the 15th for Nice. I was helping him move his room, things he didn't want to take away and we brought back here. He thinks he's 6 months away.

Paris Wednesday 23 Nov. 1932
...the weather is as dreadful as my ideas, we have not seen the sun all week, and the old thunder triumph that writes me from Nice that its overcoat is too much. My ray of sunshine to me are your dear letters....
...we had fresh news of Piraeus... the little one, quite sad of all these departures, is bored of Titoune....
...I saw Beaujon this morning, which confirmed the complete shortage of work and the concern of these gentlemen. Beaujon had told me to come and take my papers, that it was prudent. Without asking indiscreet questions he made me understand that they were afraid of a search. There must have been some in the RPD. All this came from the tax frauds discovered lately, the government wants to recover 1 billion by reprimanding them. Some may not be very whitened. Keep this for you, but I think it was easy for me to remove my packages. I'll keep them here and veremos. Keep all this to yourself!
....I had to get back on my hats and dresses, I have a hard time getting away with it alone; I miss the workmanship and taste, I think old Nany will have no chic this winter and the worst is that she's not feeling well.
…There are also two papers for Jean and Simon. You have to tell them that I intend to go to Vierville around December 5th and that I will see Leterrier for the Vignet which is being discussed. This one will certainly go to Bayeux for sale, he guries several grasses and will agree to bet for your elders, I will see with him what it will be necessary to put, a 10,000F without doubt.
I am putting the field of Dubois in order, the road wall is made, the new barrier put at the top of the herbage in the town hall path, we will postpone the fence of wire to the edge of the land that I bought 2 years ago which will enlarge the room all the more, I also have the fence of the pond redone and as Dubois has committed to half with me, every 2 years, a smoke in the room, I have already told him about the curing of the pond that would provide a wonderful fertilizer. He would take care of it and would be compensated by the price of phosphates that would not be put in place. It's an idea I'm going to pursue, and it would fix this poor pond, very badly.
...I hope Jean-Paul won't get in the way of being an engineer, really we should vary a little. Micene Talks about aviation (!!) with friend Jean-Pierre, the Titoune is hardly fixed!!And the Philou tampoco, we talk about consular career!Suzon always wants to make his daughter a pharmacist, to the despair of Dr.Brée "No! not that!"

Paris7 Dec. 1932
...this letter will probably be at the end of the year... I'll write to you all by plane next Saturday so that you have something from old Nany... at your family reunion.
....a good letter from my Simon has just arrived, put to Rio, giving me the details of the crossing of the Atlantic and the stopover of Tenerife which was particularly interesting....
...I came back Saturday at 5 a.m. from Vierville, I was gone on Thursday morning; I found the old house in good condition, the garden on a good way of wintering, the work of pruning the trees started; I set the mason who had finished me the end of the wall, which is very well, and walked through the fields with Leon. It is to put the Coulmain field in good condition, the son C. cuts the brishes quite badly, the new farmer must find everything suitable, and I warned the notary to come in the first days of January to make a statement of the place. It is a good precaution to not have trouble.
It is also necessary to tell your elders that about the Vignet which was envious of Simon and that I have been seeing, I have given up, it is in very poor condition of maintenance, ferns grow there, indicating a lean soil, the apple trees are there for the name only; they are worth nothing and are good to shoot. at all costs I would do him bad service - as well as to your elders - by pushing the auction; let him keep it. I was offered a little further planted herbage, in much better condition, measuring about 60 ares, I had asked the conditions by Pommier....
...We must tell the great Jean that I have been seeing tennis, there is very little weed to repel, we will make sure that this does not become a field again. I do not find in my notebook the proportions of soda chlorate to put in the water? I will try to get it out of here, but how many will it take?
...I didn't have time to go to my parish priest, but Mons' friends came to see me. Collières is out of place (!) electric lamps. It was quite cool and it had rained before, so the paths were changed into small lakes. The daughter of Legallois was married Monday, and part of the village was invited to it.
I had the visits of Mrs Batifffol and Mrs Cordelle, this last part for Besançon. Good Yvonne has just had new avatars, she is very brave.
Tonton is always delighted with his installation in Nice, although the weather is not favourable to him, and he has attended several parties that have enchanted him. I do not envy him and would bother me to die in the midst of this perpetual movement.
From Athens, nothing new, George was quite ill,(it) The situation in Greece is becoming truly tragic, and we expect a disaster. After closing the bakeries one or two days a week, we are defending the cars from going out more than four days; it is obvious that the stocks are exhausted and not replaced. I would like to know your big ones out of there! If the CPDE case could be arranged.of the Autonomous Port) He said he was not in a hurry to facilitate the docking of the ship in Bordeaux, what would the Verdon become? Hebert tells me that the station that is being built there is very small. They have no money, it's certain.
...I would like you to tell me in detail about Pitone and Titoune, it's worth it....

Paris21 Dec. 1932 at home
I'm a bad nany, my good kids, I missed the plane mail on Saturday, the one that was going to bring you my thoughts, my new year wishes. You wouldn't blame me, I was that Saturday near Philou at the health home, we operated it at 10:1/2 (a simple appendicitis, programmed) And you know what it is when we are helpless - and alone!, the parents so far! - in the preparations, then at the beginning, then at the waiting, at the return of the petiot that we have just been carrying. All this is already far away and thanks to God! Everything is on track.......All this reminds me of our Michou, but at this moment we were well grouped around our little one, and no doubt we could draw strength and courage, I had less Saturday, I confess, and I know that you will not blame me. I will catch up next Saturday. .......
I've been spoiled this week by the 1stera Simon's letter from Rosario, and by his plane letter of 9 December, it took me only 10 days to arrive (I think the Dakar-Recife crossing was still done by boat at the time, because of the lack of sufficient range of mail aircraft).
.....I am very pleased that my shipments have made you happy, my dear children, and that customs have not been severe, it is a vein when we think of everything that the trunks of your elders were wearing as dresses, falsies, linen, etc.
...Jean-Pierre is fine... no relaxation of supervision from his masters. The slightest failure is reported on the notebook, and every bad note decorated with an hour of glue. It must be recognized that these become increasingly rare. ... The strong way has good. ...Sunday, while I was at the health home, Tantine took him to Robert's house for lunch, then he took the whole house by car to Orly camp. I leave you to think of the joy of the petiot who had never seen so many planes and regretted that the necks! were not in the game.
...I have half-fucked my left foot by twisting my ankle on one of those famous iron nails that border the nailed passages. It is a blessing that it is not a sprain - 10 days of long chair! - I am leaving to go to the health home with my morning mules, because I have a little swollen foot. Fortunately it is a superb time, 12 to 15 degrees at the thermometer of my room. It is almost a spring time.
In Vierville, we're doing cider with o I have just bought 300 ties removed from the railway route, which is definitely replaced by a bus. This will be used for heating and the best pickets for fences. I certainly will not go to Vierville for the day of the year. I have a good pruning by a man from St. Peter, there are trees that need them in the woods; it will give them more strength.
Tio Mio feels good and has hardly changed his way of life, Truss told me who saw him at dinner.
...The little one(Bison) I sent one to my little Jean-paul and av. Pellegrini. Have you received the gallery calendar for your accounts, my dear girls? I also sent, a little late, I accuse myself of it, the quarterly pocket calendars for these gentlemen, do you have them? Also a beautiful catalogue of the galleries at your address, little Maine. You will notice the expansion of the galleries and its garage, I left the plan in the catalog.
....Toton Robert is always happy in Nice where it often rains..
...I also told you that we had a very interesting mission in St Honoré d'Eylau, I followed it quite badly, but the sermons I heard about human concern, suffering, the duties of the bride, were wonderfully pleasing. The missionary spoke in a chastised language, but full of heart and very human. The last especially described man as well as the priest, and as he spoke before an audience of women - not young girls - he could gently lean on the duties of love. Never "No one said should interfere between the husband and the wife, the union of these is a closed door personEven the most affectionate hearts have the right to cross" These were beautiful words to hear, even for those who, like me, saw a beautiful union break too soon....
